Poll: Which modern cars should join Speed Champions?

Posted by ,

While historic designs have become increasingly prevalent in Speed Champions, modern subjects remain more common.

Ten relatively modern cars therefore appear in our second poll, again encompassing a broad range of manufacturers. Any might be appropriate for Speed Champions, given their distinct design features, but which would you like to see join the theme?

Vote for your favourite after the break...

Peugeot 9X8 - didn’t even know it existed until this poll…… but WOW!

Still think we need a poll on which Speed Champ 6 stud cars should be re-made at 8 stud

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I picked the Zenvo. Mostly because Zenvo, like Lego is Danish. But also, it would be pretty interesting to see how Lego pulls off the TSR-S's party piece: it's clever rear spoiler that moves about when cornering.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Alfa is MUCH nicer in reality than on this picture and would be very interesting to see a 4-seats car in SC form - that's why it got my vote!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I would say we need most of these cars as speed champions. But as a car lovers' car we definitely need an Alfa Romeo.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Always had an eye for Maserati but I doubt that’s the most popular.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Just do them all, as great as the 8's are for allowing 2 figs and looking proportionally better they make the 6's look awful and make the roads look like side streets, but it's a great theme at any size

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I’m a car nut, and even I haven’t heard of a couple of these cars!!

It would be nice to see LEGO try to recreate the swoopy shapes of some of these Supercars, but the Dodge Viper, Maserati, Pagani Zonda & BMW i8 make the most sense to me: and would probably translate the best to brick form!

By in Czechia,

Viper ... an icon!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Could quite happily see most of these cars not produced.
Just seem to prove the adage that great minds think alike but fools seldom differ.
So many blandly similar designs.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Would be hard to tell most of them apart in Lego form, looking like they've just been spat out of a wind tunnel.
Went for the Pagani (over the Viper) as the only 2 that would at least look a little bit distinctive.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think the Peugeot makes the most sense given their record- the SC team can and has done cars with similar fins and extreme drop offs towards the rear, and while they're good with curves, they never quite manage to match the curviness of modern cars. So a car with distinct features they can carttainly replicate is my choice.

Also, that's the coolest Peugeot I've ever seen. That's not yer nan's old 208, for sure

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Created an account just to make what's surely an obvious pick: Mazda MX5 (= Miata).

Best selling sports car of all time. Widely regarded as the successor to the legendary Great British roadsters of the 60s and 70s. Consistently reviewed as one of the most fun cars to drive in its class, let alone the best value. Seen everywhere from the high street to track days to spec Miata races.

Sure, it's not a muscle car nor an expensive car, but with over a million built, it seems crazy to overlook the MX5!

I completely agree!

Gravatar
By in United States,

while they're all cool i think the Pagani has the best lines for Lego representation - less curvy than say the Peugeot

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is a really hard one

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Having had the absolute pleasure of driving a Dodge Viper once I had to go with that one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Pagani I think would provide the most interesting build challenge, but I’d like to see the Viper, as well.

I don’t think the Tesla should count as it’s just more Musk vapor ware. Let’s wait until it’s actually in production before we start asking for it in LEGO form.

Gravatar
By in Jordan,

I chose the BMW i8, but after looking at more images of the Pagani I'd much rather have that as a set instead.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Pagani Zonda R FTW

Reliant Robin

I've seen enough Top Gear to know that's an amazing choice.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

None of them :-(

Gravatar
By in Germany,

The Alfa would likely translate very well to SC with the front shape being the challenge here. I wouldn't' mind getting that. However, I'd really loved to see the Speedtail and/or the Pagani in SC. The Speedtail got my vote, but I see it's not particularly popular otherwise :)

EDIT: I don't really mind the real-world cars, but I suspect both the I8 and the Tesla may end up looking a little 'generic' or boring in SC scale

Agreed! I wish there was a N/A option.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I must be jaded by being brought up drooling over 70s, 80s and 90s supercars, as most of these seem unappealing to my eyes.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Pagani Zonda for sure! Doesn't have to be this specific version, any Zonda will do.

As for again a top-5
1) Pagani Zonda R Evolution
2) McLaren Speedtail
3) BMW i8
4) Peugeot 9X8
5) Maserati MC20

That said, considering Cobi just released a Creator-sized MC20, I doubt we'll see that from Lego anytime soon. As for the other Italian, I'd love to see an Alfa Romeo (especially since I drive an Alfa myself...) but don't think this would be the most interesting model, and would probably be rather boring in Lego at this scale, only recognizable by the stickers. And for the Viper I would very much prefer the earlier models.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I haven’t heard any of these cars.

Maybe they should make some common car models like a Civic, Corolla, Camry or something lol

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The Pagani and Peugeot are both perfect Speed Champions sets. I'm really happy this theme is getting so much attention, it's been quietly one of the best for years now. I also agree on a discussion of remaking some of the 6 studs into 8 studs.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Most of these car would most likely have the same shape at SC scale. I'd say do a 1978 Ford Ltd Country Squire with side wood panels; that would be distinctive! Sadly, this one is definitely not a 'speed champions' so most likely will not be made...

For this poll, my vote would go to the Pagani but unless they do two new special pieces, there is no way they can replicate such a narrow band above each wheels (front and back) and then the whole thing does not look right at all. (mind you, a few new parts would not be such a bad idea since it would serve many times thereafter for other models).

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don’t really care for any modern cars, I’d love to see a Lamborghini Diablo or 59’ Cadillac Eldorado. A DeLorean would also be awesome, but they’re not very speedy.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Zonda 100%. Although Viper & Zenvo would be insane. Would love to see the Zonda though and other 2010s stuff, Murcielago, 430, CCXR, etc.

They can call it Speed Limit Champions. I kind of like the Civic idea where they give you a whole bunch of options to modify it.

I was thinking along the lines of “City champions”. Champions in fuel efficiency, cost efficiency and making an everyday citizen’s lives better.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

I would love a two-pack with the Speedtail and a McLaren F1 (the road car)

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

I voted first, and then looked at the comments and the results.
Out of these alternatives, for me it was an easy choice for the Zonda. Although I wouldn't consider that a modern car anymore since it was launched in 1999. Yes, there's been countless versions and updates all the way through to 2019, but essentially it's the same but with different wings.
My second choice would have been the Rimac, so I was surprised to see that last in the votes. That is a modern car, barely even through homologation yet. It's not super-exiting in terms of shapes, but it does have some interesting and unique features that could be challenging to replicate in Lego. It also has ties to the VW group through Bugatti and Porsche, so licensing could be half-way there already.

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

I voted for the Pagani Zonda R Evolution. But damn, the car I would love to see the most is the Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0. I would purchase it on day 1 if it was made into a Speed Champions set.

Gravatar

Meh.
Let's have a 6-wheeled Tyrrell / Elf F1 car and a Lancia Stratos Rally Edition.

Gravatar

Pagani Zonda would be amazing! no wonder its the clear winner among gear heads.

Gravatar

I've wanted a Lego Zonda for years. I'm confident they could pull it off

Gravatar
By in United States,

A Baja 1000 trophy truck or some proper rally cross cars.

Gravatar
By in United States,

More Japanese cars please. Classic NSX would great. Id really love a WRX or an Integra type R or something, but i do understand that at that scale, they may just look like the regular compact cars that theyre based on. NSX would have no such problem, is gorgeous, absolutely iconic and easily recognizable

I've also driven one and it was a complete dog! To be fair it was fine in a straight line but cornered like a house brick. That said, it does look the business!

Probably the Zonda for me.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Any of these are worthwhile subjects but I thinks the Americans edge this with the Dodge Viper. Looks great standing still

Gravatar
By in Canada,

If I had to choose one, it would be the Viper. Probably not the best car, but almost certainly the most iconic. Im really fine with any as long as its not a tEslA.

Gravatar

There are some good looking cars there.
It has to be the Tesla gen2 car.

The first electric powered Classic car?

Actually I would quite like a range of Rubbish Cars. Talbot Horizon, Vauxhall Chevette, Lada Samara and Fiat Regata ought to be a good starting line up (preferably in orange, pea green, beige and brown)

Gravatar

I wanna see a.prius cause we'd get some more sand green pieces ??

Simca Horizon in orange please! The oldest car I really have memories of....
(before that we had a Simca 1100, but all I remember from that one is that it being red....)

Not a full list without the Austin Allegro.... although that would of course require a new part for the 'quartic' steering wheel!

@iamkevinwill:
My dad’s uncle bought an R/T 10…with cash. From what I understand, every dealership got sent one, and none of them wanted to sell. As long as that Viper was parked out front, it’d bring in people, and some of those window shoppers translated to sales. He kept going in and making offers on it until they finally caved and let him buy it. And then before any of us got to see it, he passed away.

@BulbaNerd4000:
Hey, if you can get them up to 88mph, a DeLorean can go as fast as you want. But they’re more contemporary to the previous poll.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love sports sedans (I drive an AMG C43 myself), so I had to vote for the Giulia Quadrifoglio! But the McLaren Speedtail would be my second choice. Sadly I think the market for Speed Champions sedans would be too small, and estates (like the AMG E63) even smaller still...

Yeah, and a Renault 14 as well in the second wave please. Ordinary European family cars from this era probably lend themselves really well to being depicted in Lego thanks to their mainly angular styling.

To be fair - I don't think a "Scrapyard Survivors" theme would be big sellers for TLG, but great for accompanying the Miniland areas at Legoland parks

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Top 5 for me is:

1. McLaren Speedtail (PLEASE)
2. BMW i8
3. Peugeot 9X8
4. Maserati MC20
5. Dodge Viper ACR

The last two I could easily replace with the Ferrari Roma and an unfortunally forgotten contemporary car that was an absolute beauty: Mazda Furai. The Maserati is too generic and I don't want US cars for the moment, we had a lot recently. (also, speaking of the Viper, I would like a lot more the 1992 RT/10 one)

Also, I was thinking yesterday about something that Lego could try: a partnership with Polyphony Digital. Would love to see the Vision Gran Turismo cars in Lego form.

By in United States,

I voted Pagani Zonda because:

1. My car knowledge is crap past 1999, so…
2. That car looks very different, an interesting challenge for LEGO.
3. Sounds like the next bounty hunter from Star Wars, am I right?

“You may have tracked me to this Force-forsaken planet, Pagani Zonda…but you’ll never find where I hid the droid!!!”

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

My list is from the Viper to Zonda R and the Zenvo.
I chose the Zonda, never had a lego spd ch Pagani.
(I know some if the others have models from the same manufactuer)
but to complete the hypercar coleection, there should be a Pagani.
(Pagani,Mclaren,Bugatti,Keonigsegg and Lamborghini)
That's my hypercar list anyway.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Alfa Romeo!!
I love the Giulia which is why we have a real one (not the quad/clover).

Quite a few Stellantis in here, which is good, but also maybe means they are currently under-represented..

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Bit of an odd selection of cars in my opinion but then its impossible to please everyone. I voted Pagani but I would love to see the Lexus LFA as a speed champion -such an iconic design. I would buy that in a heart beat.

Gravatar
By in United States,

These newer cars are so similar looking, not too much to choose from other then the name. I guess original looking design isn't high on the list these days. The Peugeot & Pagani Zonda are the two most unique looking, between these two I would say the Pagani Zonda.
I'm really not too interested in the newer cars, or the rally cars. I prefer the older designed cars. They have much more defining character & history to them.
For me, I now have my absolute favorite, the Countach & the designers have done a fantastic job creating it. So hopefully LEGO ends up designing your favorite car.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

All those modern cars are rubbish. So similar, no soul, just fast cars for men without... you know :-)

What about all those classic US cars from the 50ies? They were so beautifull! Caddy Eldorado, Chevy Impala, Bel Air, Ford Fairlane, early Corvette... even an Edsel looks better than those modern plastic rubbish.

Also REAL classic cars like Jaguar E Type, the queen of Cars - Citroen DS, 20ies and 30ies racing cars, those massive muscle cars from the 70ies...

There are so many REAL Speed Champions - let LEGO focus on that!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Speed Champions need the same as BrickHeadz - One absolutely stand out, uniquely recognisable, distinguishing feature to start with. That can then be built upon. Sadly (for Lego) a lot of modern cars lack that starting point.

Gravatar
By in United States,

All of them! Why can I only pick one???

Gravatar
By in United States,

Make the one with the fewest stickers. Race car stickers clutter up the look of these great machines.

Gravatar
By in United States,

My vote is definitely for the Viper, even if the curves might be hard to get right.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ram 1500, Proper Dodge Challenger, & Dodge Durango...................

Mustang Fox Body also please and thanks :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

And FWIW I will take any and all as long as they are not F1. Once you have one............... you have them all. Literally NO creativity after that. Just color changes.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

LEGO has officially made a full size version of the Honda Civic Type R FK8 so I hope they also make a Speed Champions version of it.

Looking at older rally cars like the Audi Quattro S1, I hope LEGO works with Renault again, and bring us the Renault 5 turbo from the same era or a more modern Clio v6.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Finally I voted Alfa Romeo, even if some more other models from this list will be welcome.
Anyway Don't think they ever will release any set from this car make, too unpopular worldwide (alfaromeo? Oh, those losing pieces by the way huh!). So I am creating a small museum from mine..

Gravatar
By in United States,

Pagani is the only one I would buy. And I'd buy two on release day.
