LEGO is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year and images of one celebratory item have been published by French retailer La Grande Récré.

11021 90 Years of Play contains bricks to build fifteen suggested models, each paying homage to historic LEGO products. These include the famous wooden duck, 375 Castle and even Fabuland's 3601 Elton Elephant!

The set costs €49.99 and features interesting packaging, which might be repeated for other 90th anniversary products.

You can view more images after the break...

Which of these homages is your favourite? Let us know in the comments.

Googly eyed Tahu Bonkle all the way!

By in United Kingdom,

In the miniature build of 1941, what are those 1x1 windows? Are they headlight bricks?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Seeing the back of that box is a nostalgic rush!

All my LEGO childhood memories came flooding back…

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm going to say all of them look great!

However, the 2010 Technic excavator set is most memorable to me--first set I bought in a LEGO store, and the first one I never could build (I was JUST getting into Technic at the time).

The Bionicle one, however, is hilarious! Looks more like a Mixel than a constraction fig!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The first Bionicle set in 6 years, and I couldn't be happier!

Gravatar
By in United States,

ADVENTURES! TINY SPHINX! TINY SPHINX!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

What a prenominal set! It is so creative and pays perfect homage to the sets featured.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

This is so must have even not because of setimetial value. Its just an amazing set of pieces.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Definitely the train. My childhood was blue trains on blue tracks!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Very nostalgic, and a sweet way of celebrating many great themes. Love that they included Fabuland too.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love that miniature 2005 police station! It's definitely one of the best they've released.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Googly eyed pig snouted Tahu honestly just makes my day, just look at him

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Castle! Pirates! Trains! Fabuland! Classic Space! So much tiny goodness...

I'm a bit surprised that Vidiyo is not represented though ;-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great collection! But I wish the tribute to classic City was Octan.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Edward Elephant.
Edward.
His name is Edward.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nice set, very nostalgic. Surprised that there aren’t any Star Wars or Harry Potter homages, I wonder why not.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was (and still am) hoping for some classic smiley figures a la Building Bigger Thinking, but Elton Elephant has utterly stolen my heart

Gravatar
By in United States,

I came into the comments section expecting a few good laughs about tiny Tahu, was not dissapointed

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

This!!!!! It warms my heart to see Lego pay homage to so many themes in one set. Its own history is front and center and goes beyond just using the classic space logo and colors or having a wooden duck somewhere. Fabuland! Belville! Adventurers! The blue tracked trains! And of course Bionicle!

And they're all so cuuuuuute!!!!!!!!
I wonder if there are more references in the alternate builds. If Classic sets even provide those anyway.

Gravatar
By in United States,

:'D Tahudorable

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

These are just too good! Love that they did Friends and Belville! Love the adventurers mini build too! Just such a fun set and Great pieces! Super impressed

Gravatar
By in United States,

The classic pirates, castle, and space definitely look the best. Although I also love the sphinx, Edward, and the police station. Do we have an official piece count yet? I noticed it's the European box.

They also put flesh bricks in the set(It's called light nougat I think?). Whatever the skin tone color is in the Boutique Hotel.

Gravatar

The first ever Bionicle set made out of actual Lego?

I guess only original Lego themes, no licenses? Which makes sense for a set like this I think.

Construction is still LEGO you smart aleck.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Oh my, that little 497 is glorious!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The little sphinx is great, and that looks like a printed obelisk?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great to get all these micro models of the classics!
Love 'em all except the googly eyes for the Sphinx (although it's a great looking micro Sphinx Secret Surprise), the Bionicle is terrible, something better for NinjaGo (dragon doesn't look right) and Dot's is considered 'classic' now?

Gravatar
By in United States,

For those of you who like trains, the small red wheels were exclusive to 4002016 before this. (It had 13 in that set)

Gravatar
By in United States,

ATTENTION SPACERS: 2 x 2 slope part 3039 never existed in trans-yellow before this set!

Gravatar

Bionicle fans: "we want a ten foot tall Mata-Nui set for the anniversary."

Lego: "How about noodle Good Guy 2: Tahu Googly Eyes?"

Bionicle fans: "This... is acceptable."

I love them all. Looks to be a fun set. I hope it has great parts here.

By in Canada,

OMG!

This is so underwhelming.

This is 90 years. It is a big celebration (or it should). My idea of milestone like this is an extravaganza where no expenses are spared. This set (and all others for the occasion) should be so freakingly desirable and a good deal in itself that everyone and its dog would run to buy it. All these models should be a bit bigger and be a 'reasonable' representation of the sets they are supposed to mimic. There are no gears in the Technic set, there are no bionicle part in the bionicle (some still exists), they(Lego) should even have brought back one Fabuland mould (no expenses spared I'm telling you). There is not even a minifig (or multiple key minifigs)?!?!? Even more, there should be old parts brought back, recolours(apparently there are some), the whole lot. The price should be borderline at cost again to foster such a large adoption that it would still generate a profit but at a lesser margin. This set (and the following one for the 90s celebration) should become such staples that every household in the world would own one even where Lego is not a thing. If Classic was not a good fit for such a set, than they could have placed it in Creator. This is a set that should have screamed: "I am Lego, I am cool, I am 2022 and you so desperately want me if only for fear of missing out".

Of course, my views are somewhat always in opposite direction of Lego if we consider the choices of Ideas theme, the stuff they did for the 40th of Lego Technic etc, etc. So I guess, the 90s anniversary will be a non-event (to me at least) but there will still be some good sets here and there.

Ps. similarlly, Lego asked which theme they should have done for the 90 anniversary (choices were: Classic space, Pirates, Castle and Bionicle). Preliminary rumours suppose that it will be Castle. Personally, I would have done one of each. It is a celebration, you want everybody happy. Lego can do 4 extra sets in a year without skipping a beat - just check how many sets they make nowadays versus just a few years ago. (A lot of people would buy all 4 sets anyway even if this is not in their 'favourite' theme).

End of rant, have a lovely day!

I think it's a great idea to have a set of bricks like this for the 90 year celebration. Let's hope it is the beginning of a run of fun sets to mark the occasion:)

They did mini Bionicle play sets built from System pieces. I distinctly remember these sets sitting on the discount shelves for months at Walmart shortly after they came out.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, hmm

Some interesting little builds, but none I need to call my own. The only set I had as a kid was Black Seas Barracuda, so this doesn't bring back much nostalgia. And I already have a better micro build version of that for my Ship in the bottle.

But that tiny train looks awesome.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This better not be the results of the contest.

Gravatar

Western? Legends of Chima? Racers? Model Team? Scala? Jack Stone? Aquazone? Elves? Architecture? ...and Clickits of course? Could there be another anniversary set yet to be revealed?

This is really cool! I find it hilarious that of all the sets I have and what they could have picked, I've only bought one of these and gave it as a gift (41340 Friendship House). I wonder if the instructions have some more...

I agree with this…if it’s 100. Then yeah…new moulds, complete extravaganza of plastic passion.

I think DOTS is illustrated not to show it is 'Classic' but to show the progression of LEGO from origin to recent times, hence the Friends, Ninjago and even Belville references.

BIONICLE was a Technic subtheme, so it was made of LEGO. And then the theme got minifig-scale playsets from 2005 to 2007, which were also made of LEGO.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It would've been cool if they put some discontinued pieces in this set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I first played with Lego in the 1970s, so I'm a sucker for the mini Galaxy Explorer and the mini Yellow Castle.

But the Fabuland Elephant is *perfect.* Great work by the designers!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think this looks really good, and a nice selection of models to represent themes through the ages. Plus the bonus of being a classic set, for lots of mixing & matching, rebuilding etc.

The 90 on the front of the packaging looks odd, though. Looks more like 9- (9 minus) than 90.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Surprised there is no modular set shown

Gravatar
By in Germany,

These look great! Though they picked the wrong police station :)
Just kidding, I know they aimed for sets across the years.

I think I'll get this. And I think I'll enjoy building these 'replicas.' Though most likely it will end as a parts pack later on...

(Very sad for all Bionicles fans out there)

To me, this thing looks more like Mr Hankey of South Park fame than any Tao ever did.

Sorry if you cannot 'unsee' this now.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Will I buy this just for the mini Galaxy Explorer? No.

The mini castle looks good though - I'm glad they included that because there have been so few Castle themed models from Lego recently. I just hope everyone who loves castle isn't feeling left out because of the size. /s

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

My reaction to the back-of-box picture:

"Ooh, Adventurer-- AAAH, BIONICLE!"

I actually like the cop-out here, of not picking one single result from the fan vote: this way, everyone's a winner! I don't know about anyone else, but I'm pretty satisfied with this as a result. Though to be honest, as those two are the only models here that I'm interested in, I confess I'm far more likely to Bricklink their parts someday than actually buy this...

Tiny Tahu looks quite ridiculous, and I genuinely love it! Knowing the fandom, I doubt it will be long before someone undertakes the challenge to recreate every Bionicle set ever in this style... :D

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

This set is so fun. I was in pure "look how they massacred my boy" mode when I first saw Tahu but I've come around to how silly he is. Don't know if it'll be a day 1 purchase with that price but I'll absolutely pick it up

Gravatar

So far the Tahu memes are on point, can't wait to see more

From what I've seen, most Classic sets only tend to have instructions for the models pictured on the box, but there are sometimes "inspiration models" without full instructions in the back of the manual, and/or bonus model building instructions available online. Both those things can be a bit rare, but it wouldn't surprise me if LEGO did something like that for an anniversary set like this).

I'm very impressed that LEGO put in so much effort to represent so many different themes from over the years — even ones like Bionicle, Belville, and Fabuland that often get overlooked due to not being "minifig scale" or using highly specialized parts. The renditions of Toa Tahu and Edward/Elton/Ollie Elephant (his name varied between countries) are especially cute and charming!

Certainly there are more themes/categories that COULD have been included. The selection is also conspicuously skewed towards products released since the debut of the LEGO Brick and "System of Play", with only a couple builds based on the non-brick-based plastic and wooden toys of the company's early history. And as a 90s kid, I would've loved a shout-out to Aquazone!

But I think LEGO picked a nice wide variety to represent here. And I'm sure MOCists will be able to come up with even more throwback builds even just from the parts in this set! After all, one of the strengths of the Classic theme is that it's very conducive to all sorts of freeform building, provided you aren't too picky about the playability or level of detail of your creations. :)

All in all, it's neat to see confirmation that LEGO had a lot more planned for this big anniversary than just the one 18+ set that the LEGO Ideas fan poll was meant to help decide. I'm eager to see what else they have in store!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't know anything about Bionicle, but that one looks like Beaker from The Muppets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

A similar cover was used few years ago, I think 60 years of the brick of something like that. I remember seeing it in Walmart all the time.

This is great classic set, and what's nice is that you can recreate these at home using your own bricks if you don't want to get it.

Box is nice, hopefully for the 100th they would do one with a flap.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would love to see Lego do these kinds of micro builds based on classic lego themes with an Advent Calendar. They could do a mini Fort Legoredo, a mini Aquanauts sub, Rock Raiders Chrome Crusher, etc. Maybe include 6 updated minifigures based on 6 classic themes

Gravatar

Bionicle at home: googly eye guy

Obviously they are doing as many models as they can, but the 375 is really disappointing at this nanoscale compared to the really nice micro version in 40290.

By in Netherlands,

Happy to see 8043 Motorized Excavator make the list. It is indeed a classic! I recently completed my own 'tribute' to that set, a version that is almost entirely made from parts from 42082 (so that you can build the classic from current parts).

Free instructions are available from Rebrickable for those interested: https://reb.li/m/103609

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I love this set for many reasons, including, but not limited to, LEGO’s official acknowledgement of Bionicle in a modern set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

You know, the early sets were just a bunch of bricks with suggested builds on the back, so it kinda makes sense to do a set that's a bunch of random bricks with suggested builds on the back for an anniversary.

Gravatar

So it's a 90th anniversary set, but not THE set. Glad people like it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, I don't have any of the previous Wooden Duck homages, so I'll definitely be getting this one for that and several other reasons. Also, holy crap does that set have a lot of tags! @Huw: Is that a record?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I mean the red train wheels are really cool and especially that printed Egyptian piece but other than that a very disappointing set!

It's a nice idea but it's literally just a normal Classic parts pack, it just so happens the 'official' builds are all classic sets (the Black Seas Barracuda is pretty lame). I'd have much rather something like the GWP they did with the mini Airport Shuttle, Black Seas Barracuda, Spaceport I think it was and Yellow Castle. Sometimes Classic sets come with minifigs and this would have been the perfect set for them but NOPE.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Almost perfect! A perfect tribute to LEGO.

Except for the absence of a Modular Building.

I love the Fabuland Elephant. And, oddly enough, the microbuild Dots Pineapple. But while it's a cute idea and certainly a suitable anniversary set, I hope there are going to be more...and not just the 18+ set, which is sure to cost the earth and probably please me even less....

Gravatar
By in Canada,

But... where's the Blacktron?

Really like this set. a lot of the models are simple, but instantly recognizable. I will definitely try to get this.

Love the Tahu.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I do like the idea. I do not get why they havent made a 18+ set of it. With at least a 1000pieces...
Imagine every model 3 to 5 times bigger than this tinybuilds and maybe it comes with a display landscape where all the builds can be lined up in to show all the difference in one "picture".

Children nowadays do not know the nostalgic factor of those builds. These builds many AFOLs would enjoy to display, but to display them they are way to small in my opinion. So, i think LEGO definitly has choosen the wrong theme for this otherwise great idea for the 90th birthday.

This time i say get the pdf instructions and save your money! Its so not worth it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hail the legend of the Biological Chronicle. I'll be buying this.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Imagine this for the 100th anniversary, a set that contains: one maxifigure (ex. 200), one Jack Stone figure (ex 4612), one Fabuland figure (ex. 324), one Bigfig (i.e. Hulk or Thanos or Sandie, or similar), one Technic figure (ex. 8712), one scala figure (i.e. my dad ex: 3103), one belville figure (ex. 5803), one galidor figure (ex. 8310), one constraction figure (ex. K2S0, Darth Vader, etc), one bionicle (ex. 8534), one brickHeadz (any one will do), one legless-armless minifig (first gen of 1976-1977), one minifig and one minidoll.

This of course will never happen but that would be a very interesting retrospective.
(Imagine the number of moulds they would have to bring back to realize this - would be quite something though)

Technically you can already do that.

Gravatar
By in United States,

They got the original big three, BIONICLE, and Adventurers, alongside a decent amount of pre-minifig classics. Just about every thing here is awesome and nostalgic and deserves it's place.

The only two I could possibly complain about are Bellvile and Ninjago. The Bellvil set and that old train are the only two I didn't immediately recognize, although that's probably just because it's before my time.

As for Ninjago, it's one of the few themes on this chart that's still around today and they didn't even pick a very iconic build form the franchise. IMO Destiny's Bounty and Samurai X are way more iconic than Lloyd's Dragon, I'd even go so far as to call it the worst dragon of the Classic Era. It's a set that's even already got a micro-build thanks to LEGO Dimensions. Despite all that though, I'm gonna love having those two on my shelf.

There's also two builds I'd like to give a little extra commentary for.

That Tahu is so goofy looking and I love him to bits. One problem with System BIONICLE has always been difficulty in recreating the intricate masks, but as LEGO has shown us here that really doesn't matter to them and you should just have fun with it. I personally want to recreate all six Mata in this style, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

The other is the Fabuland Elephant. I've always wanted Fabuland characters more in line with Minifigure scale, and this one does the job just fine for me. I'd love to see other animals redone in this style, could be fun additions to any town layout.

Of course there are also a lot of great themes missing from this. Power Miners, Aquazone, Western, Exo Force, Chima, Nexo Knights, Modular Buildings. But I'm happy with what we got.

Still holding out hope for a CMF line!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm not a big fan of "Classic" branded sets and I'm not a fan of some of the themes represented here, but I think they did a nice job of representation here. Now, obviously they couldn't represent EVERY theme or this set would be ridiculous, but as a sampling and as a somewhat even distribution of years, I think they did very well. Nice to see Fabuland get some representation even though I was never a fan of that. Same for Bionicle and Belleville.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

This is an unprecedented amount of attention for a LEGO Classic set, but then again, it's because it's not just a box of bricks. However, it does include more bricks than just the ones for the models, so that'll be a little bonus for the AFOLs who are getting this mostly for the nostalgia factor.

It's just peculiar why there is no piece count on the product listing at all.

But for good play value / imaginative / creative building, this set is nice. With very good vintage package design and concept (except the ambigous '9-' vs '90' graphics design..). Overall I like it a lot!

I think a lot of the negativity in people's responses would have been avoided if this had been revealed after some of the other 90th anniversary sets. Given the image has come from a retailer it probably wasn't even planned to be revealed first.

I think it's cute, it does exactly what a Classic set needs to do for its core audience (kids, and the adults purchasing the set for the kids) while commemorating a wide range of different LEGO themes.

If this was the only anniversary product I would agree that it's underwhelming but I think reacting that way is like going to someone's house for a party, seeing just one party balloon by the front door, deciding that's the whole of the party because you haven't seen the cake/presents/games etc. and going home in a bad mood. Maybe there's going to be something amazing (surprise bouncy castle on the back yard?) but we don't know about it yet.

Great! Now re-release full size.

These are definitely underwhelming in my opinion partly because we've had so many Classic sets that these just look like another one of those.

This was an opportunity to come out with a new eyepiece. I think the googlly eyes ruined most of those a little mini builds.

A special brick or recognition of 75th anniversary with the decorated piece/tile would have been appropriate here too.

Hoping we get some gwps that are worthy of the anniversary.

Alas no homage to Galidor I notice.

Was about to ask, can't recall having seen that part in red.

@andyh1984:
Nonsense! Galidor failed to sell in its original release, and so it shall fail to sell in this set, too.

First disappointment: no Clikits in the anniversary set.
Second disappointment: There are more than a hundred comments, but not a single one about its absence. Huwbot must be really upset with you ungrateful folk...

Edit: okay, two comments, but both misspelled it.

Gotta say, I like this remake of Tahu better than 7116 from Bionicle Stars

The micro-builds have the feeling of an advent calendar about them. Similar to the Trains 40th Anniversary Set 40370, I think everyone would rather pay for a full version of one of the vintage sets.

Fun. Reminds me of the Advent Calendar mini builds which are actually my least favorite builds, but I get what they're doing here. If you're disappointed in lack of diversity, you can still get vintage Znap and Jack Stone figures on Bricklink for pennies. Pennies, I tell you.

Do you guys know when this is going to be available?

Can they all be built at the same time? I honestly don't know.
