Optimus Prime

©2022 LEGO Group

After yesterday's teaser and subsequent debacle, the press release for 10302 Optimus Prime has been published:

10302 Optimus Prime
1,508 pieces, rated 18+
£149.99 / $169.99 / 169.99€
Available from LEGO.com from 1st June

Billund, Denmark May 12th: Leading global toy companies, the LEGO Group and Hasbro, Inc. unite for the first time to bring the iconic Transformers Autobot, Optimus Prime, to life in LEGO form – complete with alt mode. The new LEGO Transformers Optimus Prime set is a tribute to the heroic Autobot leader with over 1,500 detailed LEGO pieces. Once assembled, the figure features 19 points of articulation that allow fans to convert from robot to truck alt mode and back again. This is one of the first times a LEGO set has been able to convert between two models, without the need to rebuild.

The new LEGO set will transport fans back to 1984 to when Transformers first exploded into popular culture with the original toy line and animated TV series. Modelled after the G1 Optimus Prime character, the new LEGO set includes remarkable attention to detail and features such as the ion blaster, Energon axe, an Energon Cube and the Autobot Matrix of Leadership which can be stored in the chest chamber.

Senior Designer at the LEGO Group, Joseph Patrick Kyde, says about the collaboration: “It has been an honour and joy to work together with Hasbro to develop a LEGO version of Optimus Prime! I am excited to see these two toy companies come together for the first time to celebrate the leader of the Autobots. Optimus Prime has become a pop culture symbol of courage, selflessness, and great leadership as well as an awesome toy that embodies the problem-solving and creativity skills that both companies value so much. It’s been a wonderful and challenging task to bring him to life using LEGO bricks, especially making sure that he can shift modes without disassembly and stay true to his signature look and style.”

10302-1

Casey Collins, Head of Licensed Consumer Products and Business Development at Hasbro noted: “We’re excited to bring two of the world’s greatest play and entertainment companies together to celebrate this larger-than-life, iconic character – Optimus Prime. We know fans everywhere will be thrilled by this collaboration as it enables fans and families of all ages to create memories as they work together to build the LEGO Transformers Optimus Prime.”

Once complete building this 1,508-piece model, fans can admire their build with pride by adding the display plaque to pay tribute to the iconic Transformers character.

'LEGO Group and Hasbro, Inc. have collaborated ' - I never thought I'd see this in a press release!!

Just wonderful, amazingly faithful to the original.

By in United Kingdom,

I'm probably the target market for this. In my 40s, massive geek and an transformers fan - but even then I don't think I can bring myself to buy this. I've already got about 4 different Optimus Primes - from the original, power master, masterpiece and I'm sure I got the Titans Return one as well. Might even still have the Action master. So to me I just can't see why I need a LEGO version of something I already have.

That being said it looks fantastic it's the PROPER version (Not the awful Michael Bay version) and I'd be tempted if it wasn't for the fact I've already got loads of them.

Hmm, I wonder if someone will find a way to add knees?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The robot looks great, the truck not so much. I thought this would be an instant buy but I feel it's lacking something though I can't say what exactly.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I’m so going to get this. I’m kind of sad the great promo ends the day before this releases.

By in Australia,

When I first heard the rumor I was so excited. Then the set was confirmed, Now that Optimus Prime has been revealed I am with 100% certainty going to buy the set on release day. I've been a Transformers fan for nearly 20 years, I have a large collection which includes nearly 30 regular Optimus Prime figures. This is something I didn't think possible given how Hasbro has twice released compatible building brick Transformers lines which eventually failed and their rivalry with the LEGO Group.
The next thing to do is ........

BRING ON LORD Megatron!!!

As someone who grew up with Bay version/movies, I really wished it was Bay Optimus Prime when hearing about the leaks. The vehicle actually looks good in the movie and had way better/interesting transformation. These G1 are just really basic and boring.
Of course I know why TLG chose to do this version.

Of course! But my assumption is this is a case like Voltron's knees and hips, where stability and other practical considerations forced them to be fixed in place, sacrificing articulation. This display piece needs to be prominent in a collection, and no one wants it taking a shelf dive.

Gravatar

Sorry LGL, I have too much invested in actual Transformers. But I applaud the ingenuity.

G1, or nothing. This is not nothing. Thank you.

You know, this is a very pleasant surprise! I wouldn’t doubt there are fans of both Transformers and LEGO out there. While I don’t fit into that overlapping demographic, I hope those that do enjoy the set very much!

Also, I would love LEGO D&D sets! Think that would be a nice way to both get miniatures to play with, or inspire people to re-create things from their campaigns,

A slight bummer that there are no bendable knees, and although the exclusion of the trailer part is understandable bricks-/price-wise, it would be nice to have had included. But the model itself looks great; will definitely be getting this sooner than later! Great job!

I have written this here before on another post, but these Michael Bay movies are an abomination to the art of moviemaking. They literally have zero redeeming qualities, unless if you count explosions and the depiction of women as dumb creatures that have to be pretty and shut up as redeeming qualities.

And this original Optimus Prime has so much more charm than the Michael Bay "bling bling" version."

While many may not find them to be works of art, the movies make a lot of money, so people clearly find something to enjoy with them.

I'm glad they didn't include a trailer, not just because of the price, but also for practical reasons. It would have been a very boring build, and it would take up tons of space without offering much play value. I'm glad the trailer was standard with the recent action figures, but it would be extraneous here.

That said, I guarantee there will be fan-designed instructions and brick lists out there, so for anyone that has the money and desire, chase your dreams. I really want to see trailer designs, I just don't need one myself.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

BTW, anyone remember 8852-1? I named him Nebos and he helped out the Autobots. The transformation was odd in that you basically just turned a single crank to do it. It was the last technic set I got before my dark ages began.

That's some hard shade on every other Optimus Prime that exists. Armada, IDW, Animated, they're all valid. And you know what, it might be fun to get some of them in the future..

After all, it's not like TLG is gonna release a companion set that either turns into a pistol or a tank.

I'm definitely going to have a go at designing a trailer. Maybe even a "powermaster" one where the two can be combined into a larger figure

Gravatar
By in Australia,

The minor nitpicks I have, I know I can fix myself.

You just need to google-search the various fan attempts at an Optimus Lego over the years to realise how good this is. Yes, some of those attempts have looked nice, but I doubt they have the retail-level stability of this. Great work Lego.

I'm assuming Huw is talking about another website breaking the embargo and publishing their review early, apparently by accident, before the set had actually been revealed. They took it down pretty sharpish but obviously by that point it was already all over the internet.

... sad that they seem to have forgotten about many Mars Mission, Exo-Force and Ninjago sets, and basically the whole second wave of Alpha Team! (This is mostly a joke because none of those have looked as slick as Optimus and cheat a lot by not resembling "real" vehicles in either form)

They're probably Bay's worst work, but at the very least they have a style. It's a grating and often off-putting style, but it's a style nonetheless, so they're not artistically worthless. To me, a film that is bad because of bold choices is more interesting than a purely mediocre one.

I haven't said anything about the movies themselves, I just liked the characters (both robot and vehicle form) and their transformations better. Guess I am more into the realistic depiction instead of the animated one (Especially G1).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I've wanted Lego Transformers for years now and even tried my hand at making some myself, with no success. However, I'm too young to have watched the old Transformers series. I'm all about the live action movies and the toys that accompanied them, so this version of Optimus Prime doesn't really appeal to me. Nonetheless, it's a cool set.

Well, they are not bad because of bold moves. They are bad because they have no script, because the art direction is just plain horrible. because the camera work is even worse, and because they show that Hollywood likes to give a lot of money to a highly misogynistic director with the mind of a 16-year old testosterone-fueled boy.
"

I don't dispute that the script is bad, but when I say "bold choices," I specifically do mean the camerawork and editing. Stylistically, I don't think it pairs as well with CG as with the largely practical work in Bay's other movies, but it's certainly a choice. The Transformers movies are definitely affected by abysmal scripts and Bay's general proclivities, I can agree with that.

By in United States,

I absolutely adore this. I was expecting a $200 price tag, so $160 is thrusting it onto my want list more and more... I might have to pick it up and the Tallneck at the same time. Have a robot day!

You know, I'm really curious how this will do with BIONICLE fans.

For those that are unware, the BIONICLE fandom and Transformers fandom have A LOT of crossover. I've personally only collected the former, but just about everyone I've met with a Tahu on their shelf has had a Bumblebee just across the room, and back in my Maskposting days you'd see a Decepticon meme every two or three days.

On the other hand, one of BIONICLE's main selling points was its pocket-money prices. If Tahu going from $8 in 2001 to $20 in 2015 was enough for people to stop wanting him I have no idea how you'd convince those people to drop $160 on a robot with less articulation than older Bonks and EXO-Force mechs you can still find for $12-15 second hand. I suppose that's the Voltron debacle all over again, though this time Optimus has a much stronger nostalgia pull.

More fool you if you buy new sets from Lego immediately as they are launched and you receive no benefit from doing so. Always wait for a promotion before buying anything from Lego.

Most sets (even the D2C sets) are available elsewhere and typically have 20% discount. I only buy from Lego when there is a promotion on. So most May releases are waiting there for me for when an offer comes about."

Not everywhere. The U.S. basically lost all discounts on exclusives back when TRU went away and TLG started driving MSRP through its channel partners.

I find it amusing that people aren't debating *if* the Michael Bay Transformers movies are bad, but *why* they are bad : )

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The other consideration here, as well as the simplicity of the original transformation, is that both Bay Optimus Prime designs are considered retired at this point. Bumblebee's film morphed from a prequel to a maybe-reboot to a confirmed reboot after it's success, and going forwards any movie inspiration will be based on the current film design. And based on his cameo role in Bumblebee, that current film design is close enough to the original for it to be the same as far as lego goes.

By in Canada,

Not blaming TLG, as they have nothing to do with our country's inflation etc, but I must say that the CAD prices of the Summer 2022 wave are brutal. This would've been $199 up until 2-3 months ago.

Many sets of summer 2022 went up with at least $10 CAD, with many +$20 CAD. Easily seen with the Viking ship which is $10 more for 72 parts less. Train station $140?? Farmer's Market Van $60?? Train will go for $220 and not $200. That's crazy, considering most wages stalled. Super Mario went up as well in $10-$15. Rent over, will just have to skip on food in order to get these.

@Koend1999:
I’ve been realizing I’m getting behind again on large sets, and need to start buying a few before they retire. USS Cardboard won’t be a problem.

@AcademyofDrX:
Nobody wants it landing on their head, either. The AT-AT showed that articulated knees are absolutely possible, but the scale required to fit the gears that allow you to fine-tune the pose would just be too much. Plus, this would only have two legs vs four on the AT-AT.

@Koend1999:
The movies are garbage. The Transformers in the movies range from terrible (Staracream) to surprisingly good (Bumblebee) in terms of aesthetics, but one thing they all have in common is the transformation had to make sense. They weren’t allowed to cheat like the armored shell in the Batmobile in Batman Returns, or the Bat-Pod ejecting from the Tumbler in The Dark Knight. Both looked cool, but practically speaking were impossible. Ironman’s armor is another bad cheat, but they hand waved that away with “nanobots”. Once you’re talking grains of sand that can restock themselves, you don’t have to put any more effort into justifying the transformation.

@DougTemplar:
Well, I’ve only ever bought one Optimus Prime before, and it was a tiny blister-carded version that I picked up as a Christmas present for someone else. So…this will be my first version. As for first Doctor, I tried some of the old stuff when it was on PBS and there was nothing else to watch on Saturday afternoons, and I tried the Eccleston Doctor, and still the only one I care about is the War Doctor because it’s John Hurt.

I did get the set, and shrunk the Tardis to make it look less like a 2-story apartment (so I could put it on club layouts), and I eventually realized it was really easy to make the War Doctor. I used Frodo’s torso from 9472, reddish-brown legs, Capaldi’s hair, and even though the facial hair is wrong I used the original Ollivander head (because that’s John Hurt, too).

@GSR_MataNui:
I suspect Transformers fans were more likely to pick up Bionicle than the other way around. Robots, you know? And anyone who was born when the first Bionicle sets hit Europe is now at least 21, probably with more disposable cash than when they were kids. I was actually able to keep up with double copies of every Bionicle set for the first couple years, plus complete mask collections (barring the solid gold Hau) until I hit the Kraata wall (nobody to trade with). I think I’ve bought at least six Transformers that retailed for over $100 (not sure about my Unicron and Cybertron bots). I’m not made of money, but I’m thinking about trying to grab this on release.

@jsworpin:
The Island was decent. And honestly, after watching the Transformers movies, I was shocked when I saw Bay’s name on a rewatch of TI. I think the issue is that, when it’s obvious that he directed the movie, it’s always for the wrong reasons. When the movie is enjoyable, his name doesn’t immediately spring to mind.

"You know, this is a very pleasant surprise! I wouldn’t doubt there are fans of both Transformers and LEGO out there. While I don’t fit into that overlapping demographic, I hope those that do enjoy the set very much!

Also, I would love LEGO D&D sets! Think that would be a nice way to both get miniatures to play with, or inspire people to re-create things from their campaigns,"

Lego D&D sets would be kind of the dream..."

"I'm probably the target market for this.

If you have 4 models why cant you add one more ??
From freaking lego
