Galaxy Explorer returns!
Posted by CapnRex101,
While LEGO pays homage to Classic Space quite consistently, fans have discussed the potential return of 497 Galaxy Explorer with equivalent frequency.
10497 Galaxy Explorer realises that potential, updating this celebrated design with modern construction methods! This set contains 1254 pieces, compared with the original set's 338 pieces. Four astronauts are also included, each featuring their original red and white colours. It will be released on the 1st of August.

AMAZING!
Looks nice.
But if they're doing this, then we should also be getting a special Pirates remake...
I love these boxes!!!
Now, this is very cool.
Wow. Yeah they nailed it.
Oh, but that’s a beauty.
Good LegoCon this year guys.
I will buy two of these!

That was Pirates of Barracuda Bay.
Wow! This is so much better than I imaged from the rumors. Four seats in the cockpit! Two beds! An airlock door! A two-stage rear ramp! A clever back-hinge locking system I haven't seen on any other Galaxy Explorer build! A clever way of building the whole forward fuselage on a slant that I haven't seen on any other Galaxy Explorer build! Three point retractable landing gear! Detachable wing engine pods as space motorcycles is such a classic Lego Space feature!
Best. Lego. Spaceship. Ever!
I need three of them by this evening, Alfred. It's very important.
Absolutely phenomenal and no doubt this will sell out within a minute on LEGO.com! More of this sort of set please LEGO
Okay, awesome and a fair price it seems. Now please the Castle and an Adventurers Set would make my day.
G DANG talk about hype. Amazing stuff.
INSTANT BUY! (once again happy that the price isn't insane)
I'm eagerly awaiting my second childhood \o/
A couple notes from the show...
Based on the assembly montage, the base uses the typical Technic construction you see for large platform sets.
The set is essentially a 3-in-1 and can be built as modern versions of 918 and 924.
Love the brick-build arrow insignia and thruster cones!
Yes yes yes. Going to buy at least two of these. I so wanted that set when I was a kid. Yes yes yes!!
Did I hear right that this can be rebuilt into its 1980s counterpart?
Everyone who constantly complains about lack of space sets should buy at least one copy. This will let Lego know Space still sells!
With both this and the castle rolling out from the vote, I wouldn't be remotely surprised if we get a reissue of Barracuda Bay (like the Apollo & Bottle), along with an eventual Bionicle set.

What they actually showed were modern variations of 918 and 924. You can't build the original set with this one. Though from what they said, it initially sounded like that.
with 497 boxed in the loft, it only seems fair to buy the update - love this, and I feel like I'm seven years old again!
Beautiful! Classic Space fans rejoice!
Even though I wasn't born for decades when classic space was around, I feel weirdly nostalgic about those sets and especially the Galaxy Explorer. So it's nice to be able to own this modern version.
This looks fantastic!
The earliest large set I ever owned. Greatest Christmas gift ever. Now I own three (thanks Bricklink!). Easy day one.
Thanks, Lego!

I totally agree! (I also wasn't born yet either.)
This just makes me want a whole theme where LEGO remakes old sets like this.

That was Pirates of Barracuda Bay."
That was an Ideas set.
Not part of the 90th Anniversary line. Therefore doesn't count.
This looks fantastic, but they should have numbered it LL930, since the original Galaxy Explorer was LL928 and Benny's Spaceship! was LL929.
100 bucks? Sold. Looks great.
The one thing that would make this perfect would be the set number 10928
I know that one is already in use, but LEGO has a history of using set numbers more than once.
Anyway, will definitely buy several of these.
I have wanted Lego to do this for so long. Brings a tear to the eye!
Wow ! Never had this as a kid as too expensive - only had the smaller sets - this big kid is gonna make up for that !
I still prefer the Galaxy Explorer I got for Christmas in 1983. I still have it.
After looking more closely, this set has lots of fun design and play features. This isn't just a modern remake of the greatest Lego set ever, it's a great looking set in its own right.
I don't just want to build this set, I want to play with this set.
This is a great set, for a reasonable price. It'll be fun to own at launch until enough money got saved for the castle one.
Well. I just cried a little. I will finally own a Galaxy Explorer. Sod it. Three Galaxy Explorers - the galaxy is a big place, after all.

LL-928-A?
18 years & up... Is that supposed to be better than 18+ ?
EDIT: Never mind, rarely seen the old boxes and that's how they've written it then...
This will look great alongside Benny’s Spaceship and the Rexcelsior.
Well that's a day one purchase.
It’s a little too modernised for my liking but it probably won’t take much to give it more of an old school look. I won’t know for sure until I have it in hand or have the instructions.
I love the fact even Pep Guardiola has this set, judging by the final photo.
I LOVE IT!
This is going to be my first day-one purchase. The ship is perfect. Wish it would've included a black classic space figure, but I'm sure that'll come eventually.
Its even more amazing than I would ever realize and I want it now :D
Seeing all 4 minifigs together in the cockpit has to be the most wholesome thing i've ever seen
Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!!!
Going to buy this first second I can. THat brick built arrow is amazing, and overall a pretty good deal, considering lego sets these days.
The castle set was pretty nice but not for me, this however very much is! Looks like a reinterpretation of the original set done very well, clearly different yet instantly recognizable. And that price is a big surprise, just looking at the pictures (and considering Lego's current pricing policy) I would have guessed something in the €180-200 range. This feels like an absolute bargain by Lego standards!
And that droid.....that seems to be exactly the same as the one in 6809? Cool!
Almost perfect! They used red hubs for the wheels of the rover... but didn't put the spare air tanks on the front.
SPACESHIP!!!!!
Wonderful set but where are the baseplates and landing platform?
Day one, easily. Never got to get the original, so this is a must-buy.

Did they specify that this is the result of the vote?
What I don't like: (1) the engines, all of them. (To me, they somehow look too plain, I guess)
What I do like: (1) locking mechanism for the doors (no need to remove 1x2 plates any more; (2) the way they did the down arrow by creating a negative space. (3) Brick built positional thrusters are also cool as well as half round navigational lights. (4) the whole cockpit in built in an incline (cool building technique). (5) 'fresh' red and white spacemen (we got white not too long ago). (6) let's not forget 'classic' box layout/colours/style.
Other remarks: (1) I am on the fence as to the width of the back spoiler (6 studs is a lot - 4 might look better). (2) I also think that this should not be number 928. 930 as suggested above or even higher (932?). (3) one important picture is missing - the underside. (the legs looks pretty cool from what we can see). (4) the robot could be significantly better.
Conclusion: definite buy as soon as possible. A few things I would have done differently but beggars can't be choosers. First classic space in 40 years, I'll take it.
gotta love the red wheels
I fear for the safety of the little guys riding the “thruster scooters” seem a bit overpowered, can’t wait to have a swoosh though.
"Oh, it's beautiful"
Ick.. STAMPs
I was not one of the people clamouring for more classic space, as I was only just born when the original came out and so my childhood was space police 1 and 2, blacktron, etc.
I also feel City this year has a definite space homage feel to it, so with that and the NASA sets and star wars, I'm not feeling a lack of Lego Space.
But this is a definite purchase for me, maybe not day 1,but sooner or later, it's just so well executed as a design!
Wow, I’m getting it asap! Since I don’t have Classic Space nostalgia: it’s not early 1980’s anymore, astronaut’s helmets should have visors :-)
AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
*nerdgasm*
What a beautiful gift to Afols, bravo Lego!
The Galaxy Explorer: New Horizons?
I knew it was going to happen, but I wasn't prepared. So happy to see this Lego icon re-released...I have that same feeling as 44 years ago when I saw the Galaxy Explorer appear in a Lego folder. Just a bit strange that the baseplate and communication unit are missing… Nevertheless this one will certainly get a nice place next to my original 928. Well done Lego! Bring on the Classics :)
Am I the only one missing the baseplates?
AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL AND DEFINITELY MINE ASAP

If they would have included something like that, we all know it would have been Road Plates. Which A) would have increased the price of this set with at least 50%, and B) would instantly have turned all the love for this set in pure hatred ;-)

we literally had a black seas barracuda remake in 2020....
My brain has just exploded with happiness! It’s 1978 and I’m 10 again! A day one purchase. Will look amazing next to the original I have on display in pride of place.
72% of 'buyers' in the survey (at time of writing) incl a whopping 44% 'as soon as released'! (wonder if it is the most loved new set since we have these surveys).
For once I shall join the group of day-1 buyers. Hopefully better stocked than the Tallneck...
Just awesome! Impressed by the sleek updated design.
Spaceship spaceship spaceship!
(and I love they reuse the old days' packaging)
They've kept the steering wheel from the original 928... That's hilarious, and a very sweet touch!!!
Guess what, I just discovered that you can pre-order this. So I ordered one 10497 with the Buzz Lightyear spacecraft 76832 and got my free Forest Hideout 40567 in the process. Quite pleased with that!
I’m feeling like a kid again. So nostalgic I’m feeling with this one.
This one looks really bad, and totally lacks the charm of the old set. Glad that I own the original.
Looks cool, the 18+ made me laugh! The box art is cool although should have alternative builds on the back, which must be far easier with 3x as many pieces! Just wondering how much larger and wider it must be compared to the original to accommodate the 4 seats, and rec room?
It's a beauty.
Love the box picture of the 4 Spacemen blasting off on their adventures! Would have that as a poster!
It’s so beautiful
I think I might cry
Is there a release date for this?

Of course with baseplates/landing pad that would have been so much better but even without them, I'd still would have liked a small communication tower/outpost. Ah well, already ordered anyway!
Gorgeous!

I’m a huge LEGO space fan. Hate classic space colour scheme though. Never understood the love for it except nostalgia.
I do think space would sell. Don’t think this will appeal to many outside AFOLs. Look at what LEGO did with the castle anniversary set. Space deserved something like that.
For a few years now, I've had the original set on my wanted list. Might be time to take it off.
There are currently 4 different logos for the 90 years of play (each different from what represents the middle of the zero). They are (castle soldier) 10305, (forestman) 40567, (brick (2x4 presumably)) 11021 and (spaceman) 10497.

I think many Classic Space fans will be very happy they get an awesome set that doesn't break the bank. While that caste in itself is great, I bet many people will give it a pass purely because of the price.
The only Classic Space anniversary set I could imagine on the same level to that castle would be a monorail....
Yes! Love that they kept an angular design (Psiaki!), and increased the level of detail without going Neo Classic Space MOC greeble-fest. It's higher resolution without loosing the pure simple iconic shapes of the original. Love it!
Not sure how swooooooshable it is thought: it's quite wide and flat, not sure how to securely hold it.

Really, where?
THIS is what I expect from Lego to nourish nostalgia! Set-wise and price-wise. And not some exaggerated, priceinflated castle moc! How is this possible? To hit the nail for the space theme and fail so badly in the castle theme?

I get the price thing. Just so disappointed that the space set is Classic Space - worst space theme, it’s so bland.
The monorail would be one option though that’s not classic space, that’s Futuron. Reimagined Blacktron Message Intercept Base or something new. A futuristic city, loads of mods to past themes. So many options that are better than this offering.
I love it, thank you TLG to listen the old fans.. only one thing... please rename it to LL938 or 948 but no 928.
Thank you :)

After yesterday's vintage SOTD of diodes with Legos and now this?! I can finally get the set that lil-me always dreamed about!
Perhaps it's a sign that it's time to walk into my neighborhood Lego store, grab this set, drop the mike ("StyleCounselor out!"), and fade away into the west, never to be seen again.
I'm pleased they kept classic faces on the spacefolk. The simple expression is not just more fitting for this set, but also cuter and more playable than some elaborate visage designed by a graphics professional in photoshop.

Galaxy Explorer and a good price point? What's not to like?
Trans-yellow and those klaxon/thrusters. I had the 6985: Cosmic Fleet Voyager and boy did those trans-yellow parts get tons of scratches over years of searching for parts.
A couple of interesting choices here:
- The robot seems to be 1:1 from 6809 XT-5 and Droid. Interesting choice.
- The transparent cup seems like an homage to 6970 Beta I Command Base.
- Love that the packaging is so reminiscent of the original Galaxy Explorer.
- Buggy has red rims. But no oxygen pack, instead a light at the front. The only similar buggy with a light at the front that I recall is in 6980 Galaxy Commander - different colour scheme, but fits with the balloon tires.
- White interior and air lock reminds me of Jim Spaceborn?
- Would have preferred a new canopy in trans yellow, instead of the one already made for 70816 Benny's Spaceship.
Anybody else notice the SNOT-work downward facing arrow on the sides of the ship? I wonder how they did that!
Looks great. Just preordered it. Feel sorry for all the 17 year olds that are not allowed to build it though.
@CapnRex101
In the inevitable review, can we please get a side-by-side shot with the original and/or Benny's SPACESHIP!? Thanks.
Ok, the castle set is out of range for me, so now I know where to redirect my budget.
Now, please, LEGO, a Neo Classic Space series starting from this model.

What a BEAUTY! Yesterday... and Today!
https://www.theverge.com/23173235/lego-galaxy-explorer-90th-anniversary-birthday-price-release-date
This article has a picture of the ship partially built and a picture of the small and medium sized spaceship alt builds (the 918 and 924 to the set's 928). I hope we get instructions for those!
I bet those pictures and the interview in The Verge's article will show up on Brickset in a day or two.
WHAAAAT? This is a thing? This is real?
A hundred dollars for a 12-inch-by-20-inch toy is quite a bit of money for those outside of the "Lego price perception distortion field," yet I see a lot here I like. Classic smileys, can't be beat.
Enough room for all the crew in the forward cockpit, as well as ample living and working space in the aft section.
Those engine-to-speeder conversions are pretty cool, and they don't even leave the mother ship powerless because there are two more engines at the back.
I like it. It's not quite cheap, but neither is it prohibitively expensive. @AHYL88's point about the original $32 price being equivalent to about $128 today is well taken. Maybe I can come up with a good justification for it.
I love Classic Space, yet I don't have much from the series. Pre-ordered this one as soon as I saw it. I hope they make more sets like this. Perhaps from my favorite series, Blacktron.

OH NO!!!! Now I have to buy multiple copies of this. I think the small one is a little bit crude (or the angle is not very good) but the middle size one is very good - although I fail to see the lift truck. (most likely you cannot do the small and medium size at the same time - unfortunately)
Oh man. My favorite theme by a mile. Classic Space was my entire Lego world as a kid.
Old light gray, bright blue, black, white, a little red and a little yellow... that was it, the entire Lego color palette as far as I knew. I've filled five large bins with Classic Lego parts from Bricklink in the last few years, bathing in the nostalgia. (I'll buy all your old light gray. Seriously.)
Went ahead and pre-ordered a couple of these, but I suspect I'm going to be buying a dozen or more of this set. Please please please reintroduce the Classic Space line permanently.

"But Psiaki’s team did find a few places to modernize the set where it seemed thematically appropriate. Some of the original printed Lego computer bricks have returned — but as flat tiles now instead of sloped monitors, making them look less like CRTs and allowing more of them to fit in the cockpit."
From The Verge article (note the photo of the partially assembled model). I was wondering based on the box art which of those glorious little graphics might be stickers (I'm assuming that's what you meant by 'stamps'), but based on what I'm reading/seeing in The Verge article, there may be more prints than I initially thought.

It’s lovely. I don’t know how many I’ll ultimately be able to get, but I’ve already preordered my first.
I'm curious... How does one use a coffee mug in the vacuum of space?
Why are people answering the poll "Yes, as soon as it's released" when the article doesn't state the release date?

They seem to manage on the Enterprise!
This is great, only thing to decide now is which of my original classic space vehicles will be ousted from their base plate to allow this to sit on it. Luckily I managed to get quite a few classic space base plates many years ago for very little money.
Love it, though I am a bit sad it only includes the ship. Part of the appeal of the original set to 6 year old me was that it had everything: a ship AND baseplate AND a small base. It was a spaceport into one.
Looks amazing and looking forward to the build.
Anybody else getting their 928 out of storage today?

I don't think it matters whether it's tomorrow or in ten years, I'll be buying this as soon as it's released. (Also, it's August 1st, it's everywhere!)
I LOVE IT!
Even the price seems reasonable!
I WANT ONE!
Maybe two.
Absolutely love it. Hits all the right nostalgia buttons and definitely a buy. Currently building Optimus Prime. Lego really are knocking it out if the park this year, especially if there’s a UCS Razor Crest and huge Eiffel Tower as well. My bank balance is struggling!

For us early 80s kids it would have been nice if Lego had gone for a 48+ age rate on the box, would have finished it off ;)
Mmm - X-wing canopies in trans yellow (Pete will like that). Also are those 1x2 semicircular round tiles? Can’t see the join if they’re 2x 1x1 quarter circle tiles. Looks good but needs more greebling! Wot, no moonbase to accompany this Space Cruiser? Will look lovely next to 928, 924 and 928. Does Benny’s count as Classic Space now this one is out?
@pecadorl said:
"Am I the only one missing the baseplates?"
No you are not! I miss them too. Good thing then I have spares to go with original set from my childhood. Go grab some from Bricklink before they disappear :)
I would have gladly paid an extra $20 for some brick built craters and a little moon outpost but the set is already so perfect as is I can't complain.
I'm torn on one thing though.
A part of me is sad that Castle got a $400 set and Space only got a $100 set.
The other part of me is glad I don't have to spend $400.
But seriously, I cannot understate this enough - this is literally a dream come true in so many ways.
Hopefully the set ends up being popular enough that we get more love letters to bygone themes.
According to the Verge article, it's about 50% bigger in every way:
"How much bigger, though? When Psiaki realized he was 50 percent taller than his own seven-year-old son, that became the reference point. The new 1,246-piece Galaxy Explorer is roughly 50 percent larger in every dimension — “engines that are two modules around, we make them three modules, the width of the wings gets wider, the thickness of the plate,” and anything else designers could stretch."
Fun fact, if you account for inflation, the new Galaxy Explorer is also cheaper than the original.
With an RRP of $32 US in 1979 - adjusted that's nearly $130.
The original was my favourite set as a kid, which I received when I was 8 years old. Hot on the heels of Star Wars and everything Space, this is my childhood Lego in a nutshell. I had lots of the Classic Space sets from around '79-'81. I never got into any of the 'trons with their vastly different colour schemes. The classic light grey with the complementary pairing of blue and trans-yellow. Loved it, still do.
To be honest, I was really looking forward to this, but when I saw it I was underwhelmed. It was too much the same, somehow, yet different. I didn't like the thick smooth edges to the wings, and the tail is far too deep at six studs. Where was the base and landing plate?
Then I came back to looking at it later, and this time I didn't look at it on my phone, but a desktop PC with a large monitor. And I'm glad to say I liked it a LOT more when I looked at all the detail. There are some clever ideas and techniques being used. It pays a beautiful homage to the original.
I'm delighted to read here that it was designed by Mike Psiaki, my favourite Lego designer! His Work on the Mustang, Porsche and Ecto-1 is outstanding.
Still not sure about the tail - it's so closed in with all those vertical surfaces and it feels too 'fat' - I might have to see about slimming it down to 4 studs or so. Perhaps build a little landing pad..
I've pre-ordered this set and look forward to building it. In the lead-up I might just have to dig out the pieces for my original Galaxy Explorer and display them side by side :) Thank you Lego, and thank you Mike!
Wow great set! Want!
But where is the lunar surface building plate?
Better than the original! I think that little robot is a near exact replica from the one that came with my first Space set as a kid, although it was released years after the model this ship is based on. Might be the best LEGO spaceship ever.
Although I do like it a lot and certainly gonna buy it, I would have loved to see the designers recreate the original as close as possible with nowadays parts. That would probably be quite the challenge...

Ha - agreed! I was going to say 40+ (I would be allowed to build it, then).
Would have preferred that they updated the minifigs with visors, or at least make that optional with extra helmets.
Thank God it's not a Samsung product :D
As a Technic guy, I consider buying it. Turned out fantastic! Only if every 'classic' themes would get a reimagined set for the anniversary (Technic included of course)...
I'm conflicted about it. I'm happy that it's beautifully designed and very faithful to the original model. Then again, I think some parts of the model is overdesignded unnecessarily just for the sake of showing off.

It appears to be an exact recreation of the droid from 6809. I'm curious about why they chose to recreate that particular droid, which has relatively little connection to the original set. Right now I'm thinking it's either that the designer saw the side-engine fliers as being inspired by the XT-5 from that set, which was basically just a flying chair with a rocket on the back, or they really wanted to include a robot and that was the easiest old design to do with the parts currently available.
Two pre-ordered with two of the XL-15 spaceship which means lots of trans-yellow on the way.
I'm ecstatic about this set. Takes me back to my childhood but with a sense of modern building techniques and pieces.

In case it wasn't blatantly obvious from the nature of the set, promotion of it, and just the overall design, the Ideas blog confirmed today that they're both from the vote.
I take a few days off and what does LEGO do… totally kicked some ass with these latest reveals.
This is…reeeeeeeeeeally cool.
It sounds like you can't build both smaller ships at the same time, but I bet after building the medium one you have *enough* of the small one's parts that filling in the gaps from your own collection is doable.

"Better than the original! I think that little robot is a near exact replica from the one that came with my first Space set as a kid, although it was released years after the model this ship is based on. Might be the best LEGO spaceship ever. "
It appears to be an exact recreation of the droid from 6809. I'm curious about why they chose to recreate that particular droid, which has relatively little connection to the original set. Right now I'm thinking it's either that the designer saw the side-engine fliers as being inspired by the XT-5 from that set, which was basically just a flying chair with a rocket on the back, or they really wanted to include a robot and that was the easiest old design to do with the parts currently available."
Maybe they just really like that set and saw an opportunity to do a homage.

I suspect it's because they want to include the transparent coffee mugs from the Beta-I base, and XT-5 looks like a coffee machine.
Please Lord let this have a preorder option. This is going to be 500 times worse than Saturn V, Mos Eisley, and the Titanic combined.........
Or at the very least, Lego needs to have its Web tech team in an all hands on deck situation at the moment of release.

Preorders are already live for U.S. buyers!
I just saw the designers' video, and this set has B-build, which allows you to build 918 and 928 , wow! Now that's the reason we need this set!
Lego should have brought back the old-style boxes. They used to be a beautiful display and not just a carton box. Specially for a collector item like this they should have covered that "detail".
From the Assembled interview video 00:01:47: "No stickers" (i.e. that's all printed tile, baby)

Curious about others’ pre-ordering experience so far. I ordered one on June 18, then decided to order a second one (along with $50 of other stuff to get the gift with purchase) on June 19.
Both initially said “backordered,” which is just Lego-ese for “not shipping until August 1.”
But yesterday the 2nd order changed to “awaiting new stock.” I’m assuming that means my first order came in early enough to be among the initial production run, while my second order didn’t. (Not complaining BTW - just reporting.)
So I’m guessing these immediately sold out (or at least sold out of the direct online-order allocation).
Anyone else have a similar experience? Thanks!

"Am I the only one missing the baseplates?"
No, my sentiments the same. Luckily I have several stored away for when this beauty graces my space collection.
Beyond awesome! I wanted this set SO bad as a kid (yeah, I’m old…), this is even better!
Hoping for a similar remake of 6929, the coolest LEGO ship ever!
Not available for pre-order in Norway, though… only in the US? That sucks.
