Review: 40578 Sandwich Shop

Posted by ,

40578 Sandwich Shop is the gift with purchase with orders exceeding €90/£90/$90 at LEGO.com from today until the end of the month, everywhere except North America, it seems.

The model comprises a section of road, a small kiosk and, what I believe is a first for LEGO city, a food delivery cyclist.

Summary

40578 Sandwich Shop, 110 pieces.

An interesting addition to LEGO City

  • Rare colour bicycle
  • Good introduction to the new road plates if you don't already have any
  • Building is tiny
  • No interior detail
  • Fairly high spend required to acquire it

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

The kiosk is mounted next to one of the new 8-wide smooth road plates, which has ramps at both ends. Much of the cost of the set has been squandered on the road and as a result the building is miniscule. Despite its diminutive size it offers a drive-through service and presumably also supports online ordering, with deliveries made by bike.

For the avoidance of doubt as to what sort of food is available at the premises a huge great sandwich on the roof makes it abundantly clear!

The inside is bare bar a cup on a counter. An outside table provides somewhere for customers to stand and eat.

The highlight of the set is without doubt the cyclist and his bike. Bright green cycles have been produced for only two sets until now, neither of which I have. His matching BMX/motocross-style helmet is equally rare.

The mailbox casing has been around for decades, and it's been put to great use here as an insulated delivery box, held on to his back using a 41811 MINI ARMOUR, W/ KNOBS, NO.1.

The set contains four stickers, two of which are on the box, two on the shop's signs.

A second figure is included, who I assume is another customer given her attire. Like many young people nowadays she looks to be inseparable from her phone.

Her torso is new this year and her hairpiece is not in our database, but I don't think it's new going by its element ID (6227248).

I am sure there must be excitement amongst the citizens of LEGO City now that this new food delivery service is available. Let's hope the cyclist's legs can keep up with demand!

It's an attractive GWP that will look great in any City layout. But, you'll probably have to make an impromptu purchase in order to acquire it given that there are no new releases due during the promotional period. I guess that's the whole point of GWPs...

It's the gift with purchase at LEGO.com, free with orders exceeding €90/£90/$90, from today until the end of the month, or while stocks last.

By in United Kingdom,

Don't think I'll be after this one. Nice little set but it's a high threshold for something where we've had similar stickers or designs elsewhere.

I will knick that idea for the Uber Eats/Deliveroo rider bag. Simple but genius!

Bought this today and got a free 80036 City Of Lanterns set ;)

Lego.com in US didn’t get the memo. GWP here is return of amusement park. Not a bad little set but I was hoping for this one.

The USA loses this GWP and substituted 40529

I always feel a little weirded out with female minifigs having a painted-on waist. Looks especially strange with the background color they chose here.

By in United Kingdom,

I think this is quite a nice looking GWP. Threshold would be a bit steep if it wasn't for the fact it's doubled up with the 40515 Pirates and Treasure GWP which makes it pretty reasonable.
Got a couple on the way, with a Galaxy Explorer and a Jazz Quartet (plus skeleton and pumpkin storage heads, and a tin lunch box!)

Honestly one of the best GWPs they've done IMO. Good figs with good prints and accessories, the colors and design of the shop is colorful and nice, and you get some road plates. The note about no interior detail is a bummer, unfortunately.

Very rarely am I impressed by City but I like this one.

If you rotate it 90º, you can attach the bag to the bike stud.

By in United States,

I just placed an order that would have qualified for this! Although apparently the US is getting 40529 instead, and I already have that one, so that makes me feel better.

That lady wants to speak with the manager!

By in Finland,

It's more of a road plate with a sandwhich stand as a side build.

By in United States,

I'll be picking up the bugle on sunday (my birthday!) and so I'll get this. I'll probably just part it out as, although the build is nice, it doesn't completely interest me

By in Germany,

A nice little city addition but the threshhold to get it, it way too high, agreed. You're better off bricklinking this.

By in United Kingdom,

I would buy this if it was on the shelf at about £12.
Oh I so wish you could buy the GWP sets separately.

By in Ireland,

The avocado torso / top is pretty cool. ????

By in United States,

As has been discussed on the previous article, the high-waisted pants are a great addition. I hope we see more in different colors, but it really depends on if they can improve that print quality.

@CCC:
They always assign MSRP to GWP. They need to do this for tax purposes (in the US, inventory on hand is taxed as if it’s profit), in case they ever end up allowed to put these up for sale, or if someone returns the qualifying purchase without the GWP (which should result in a return of the purchase price, less the value of the missing GWP).

Great set, but what’s super annoying is that they have got rid of the offers calendar!

I hope USA gets this one! I really like it!

I've been holding off from making a large purchase hoping a GWP will show up. Time for me to pull the trigger.

EDIT: Ugh, just saw we get 40529 in the US. Don't want that one again. :(

In itself I think a pretty nice little set. Tiny size of the building is to be expected, though it could indeed use a little more detail inside. The one thing I really don't like though is that torso print, it just looks so weird as the print on it doesn't match the legs at all.

Hoping/expecting this one to appear as a GWP in the US at some point. (I know with LEGO these days that I should not expect anything other than price hikes and frustration, but still holding out hope)

By in United States,

The sandwich prices really put those in 10303 Loop Coaster to shame -- and here they're just giving mustard away instead of charging $4 to add it on!

By in Romania,

I was lucky enough to get two promos, this one included. I’m not a huge fan of city stuff, though I do have a few city sets. Anyway, I quite enjoy it now that I own it, considering I would have never bought it otherwise. The figs are nice and I got my very first road pieces. Could very well be the start of something in the future…

@FuddRuckus:
I don’t see any mustard on those sandwiches.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Reminds me of the old 3438 McDonald's sets :)

By in United States,

Are we likely to get this in the U.S. at some point? I love this set but I’d hate to spend a small fortune on the secondary market only to be able to get it free later.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I'd like to see the food delivery person wearing a full face helmet on a city bike. Those things get so hot inside, you really only wanna have them on, when riding some proper trails.

By in United States,

where's the food?
