LEGO Ideas announces Dungeons and Dragons challenge!
Posted by CapnRex101,
LEGO Ideas periodically hosts building contests around certain topics, yielding 21329 Fender Stratocaster and various promotional sets, among others.
The latest such challenge celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons and information about the contest follows:
Join us in celebrating 50 years of Dungeons & Dragons! To celebrate those 50 adventure filled years, we invite you to ignite your imagination and showcase your favourite aspects of the Dungeons & Dragons game using LEGO bricks, elements and pieces!
You could create your ultimate builds, based on your favourite storylines, monsters, characters, heroes and locations.
We’re talking:
- Detailed Display Model of your Favourite Character or Monster;
- Functional Display Models for Players / Dungeon Masters;
- Ultimate Build with customisable elements; all rooted in the D&D World
A panel of judges (the “Judges”) consisting of members from the LEGO IDEAS team, and the Wizards of the Coast team, will choose designs from the pool of submissions for the Fan Vote.
Excitingly, all designs that reach the Fan Vote phase, will be eligible to become an official LEGO IDEAS set! Unlike typical LEGO Product Idea submissions, the Fan Vote phase for this promotion, which runs from November 28th 2022 to December 12th 2022, is intended to help the Judges gauge fan interest in specific designs, and validate fan excitement for the theme. The Judges will ultimately choose which model from the Fan Vote phase will become a LEGO IDEAS set, regardless of the number of Fan Votes obtained, although lots of votes certainly helps! Once the final model is selected by our panel of Judges, the fan who submitted the design will have the pleasure of becoming our latest Fan Designer!
The winning fan will be compensated as a Product Idea prize winner as outlined in the Product Idea guidelines and Terms of Service. Meaning they will receive the following:
- 1% of the total net sales of the LEGO IDEAS Dungeons & Dragons product;
- 10 complimentary copies of your LEGO IDEAS Dungeons & Dragons set;
- Credit and bio in set materials as the LEGO IDEAS Dungeons & Dragons Fan Designer; and
- a prize package of Dungeons & Dragons goodies!
Entry Deadline
Submit your entry no later than November 14th 2022 at 6:00 a.m. EST. If you’re not sure what time zone you’re in, here’s a time zone converter.
This submission invitation runs a bit differently than typical LEGO Product Idea submissions, so please pay extra attention to the Fine Print and the D&D Content Terms.
You can find more information on the LEGO Ideas website.
Are you a Dungeons and Dragons fan and are you considering entering? Let us know in the comments.

Looks like a D&D Lego playable board game set is coming out soon. USD 699 thank you very much. Oh actually with the recent inflation, USD 849.
Okay so clearly Hasbro is willing to reach across the aisle now we have Optimus Prime and now this DnD collab. Hope that bodes well for further products. Also 1% of total net sales sounds incredible. Good luck to the prospective entrants.
Sounds interesting. There is the potential for some fun mini-figures.
I really need to have an official D&D LEGO set
As someone who's a Magic the Gathering player, its nice to see that the Hasbro/Lego partnership that had to have happen with the Optimus Prime is bearing fruit closer to the reality of MTG being represented in Lego.
Seeing WotC mentioned in the article made me happy. MTG and D&D have had numerious cross overs since they're under the same roof, and while I'm not an avid D&D player, I certainly do appreciate the theme, and this is a lovely contest that really gets my brain buzzing with ideas. I might actually take a crack at this! I hope this product does well and we eventually see a proper D&D set come along.

find it very interesting that they specifically refer to it as "the theme." It sounds like it has the potential to grow beyond a single set.
Hoping this fills the Fantasy-Era-sized hole in my heart.
@Lego just look at Ninjago Master of the Mountain, take all that combinable structures, minifigs and the dragon - done.
https://brickset.com/sets/theme-Ninjago/subtheme-Master-of-the-Mountain
This has potential!
As a teenager, playing RPGs, I always wondered about creating scenery & characters for the game using LEGO & minifigs, but was too shy to suggest it to my peers for fear of it seeming childish. This has great potential...
Anyway, always keen for more dragons!
As a fan of D&D and lego sets, I'm surprised by this. But as this will most likely lead to another 600 euro build of a specific dragon or something, I'll most likely pass. To me D&D is more about the story you create with each other anyway, not the things that are typically adapted into sets. It's too amorphous.
That said... here's hoping for a (relatively) affordable and decently desirable Lego D&D set, whatever it will be!
Another opportunity for a CASTLE!
Looking forward to lots of artistic monster and dragon creativity, together with a fantastic scenic backdrop for display. I will try something myself, but the talent of some of the builders is amazing.
Somehow it feels super stupid that LEGO drags their own contests/ challenges into their licensing scheme. Definitely a bummer for people who aren't a fan of neither one or the other...

I think it's a fun way to get the community involved. It certainly is more interesting than "licensed themed no 47" just getting announced and dropped out of the blue!
I hope that we get a lot of options for minifigures, but that's unlikely to happen if this is just a one-off set. Imagine if you had a variety of parts and weapons for different races to make minis out of.
Holy crap, that’s cool! Surprising news and collaboration. Good luck to those who participate!
Dungeons & Dragons movie coming soon too. Just saying...
Interesting, my table has used Lego minifigs for D&D for years. Kinda neat to be ahead of the curve! Also please make more yellow eared elf hairpieces Lego. All we have is the two CMFs and some Christmas elves
@followsclosely:
Watch it. If you jinx it, they’ll only make sets based on Spelljammer.
@Vladtheb:
The CMF fantasy elf hair was also produced in reddish-brown for a CMF werewolf, which works for Drow. LotR elves could be left unchanged (maybe they don’t get much sun, so they’re pasty white, or alternately you can hit the fleshie bits with a non-highlighter yellow Sharpie marker.

Welcome to 2022! How was your time in the early 1980s? As a self-identified christian and huge fan of the D&D franchise, I can say that you've missed out on a lot!
Well this is going to be exciting! I honestly cannot wait to see what amazing things people come up with. I am hoping for a giant playable map with modular rooms and a bunch of minifigs/parts to be able to character build.

Dungeons and Dragons has no links to Satanism. It was part of a scaremongering attempt in the 80s, and as a result, it's been associated with it. But, if you are interested in lego religious things, someone did actually make a lego version of the bible on the internet.

... which would be awesome because (a) Spelljammer is awesome, and (b) one of the awesome things about Spelljammer is how it incorporates all of the other D&D "spheres." So sets based on Spelljammer could actually originate from Krynn or Faerun, etc. Unlimited possibilities!
Also, I've been working on a Spelljammer ship MOC for a while, and now I might just have to submit it for the contest!
I am SO excited for this! More exclamation points!!!"
This is completely unexpected and immensely cool! I was finally able to learn D&D a year ago so while I'm not an avid player or even experienced by any stretch, this is an exciting prospect.
"Excitingly, all designs that reach the Fan Vote phase, will be eligible to become an official LEGO IDEAS set!"
This statement confuses me a bit. According to the rest of the copy, only one submission will be chosen by the Judges as the winner and be produced as a LEGO Ideas set. But this happens after the Fan Vote phase. What about the rest?
I was thrilled to see this on my Twitter timeline this morning! I won't be entering (my MOC skills aren't up to snuff), but really look forward to seeing the results. I also like that they won't necessarily pick the one with the most votes...because we know some people who may be less deserving of winning can simply crowdsource more votes from dedicated followings.
My wife has been using a minifigure as a mini for one of her D&D characters for a few years now. When I DM, I've also used Lego bricks to create a tabletop dungeon. It's not as fancy as those hand painted miniatures, but it's also a fraction of the cost...because WOW those are SO overpriced even for the unpainted walls, floors, and furniture! Sure, I could just draw the map on paper or use dry erase markers, but Lego walls help it be more 3 dimensional.
This brings my dream of having actual Critical Role minifigures one step closer to reality! Please, oh please give us tiefling minifigures!
I have been waiting for this for SO long!

Hate to be pedantic but “eligible” merely entails a possibility of being chosen akin to how all candidates in a competition are “eligible” to be the champion but only one is crowned thus. Presumably the rest would be left to languish as unrealised Ideas.
Very excited to see where this goes. I'm not much of a MOC person, so the actual competition isn't really my thing, but I'm an avid RPGer and grew up in the Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk and Mystara. Would love to see any number of locations, scenes, monsters and characters from these properties get realised in Lego form:
Illithids, Beholders, Owlbears, The Tarrasque, DRAGONS, Waterdeep, Myth Drannor, Karameikos, Castle Greyhawk, Drizzt, Mordenkainen, Elminster, Raistlin, The Knights of Solamnia, The Harpers, Spelljammer!
Just don't mention Golarion.
1% sounds quite low

All great ideas. I would love to see a LEGO Tiamat or a large D&D logo or even a menagerie of the most famous monsters.
Reading this implies to me that a “traditional” Castle theme won’t be coming back, possible success of 10305 Lion Knights’ Castle notwithstanding. On the other hand sounds cool, we’ll hopefully get a full theme out of this with sets on different price points, including minifig packs for an army building.

Thanks, not pedantic at all that clears it up for me.
This is an awesome challenge! I'll definitely discuss set ideas with my D&D party!
@ForestMenOfEndor:
Did I say Spelljammer? I meant Dark Sun. And not sets that are based on city locales, but just different sized tan baseplates and some minifigs, out walking across the desert, no oases in sight. Point is, no castles. Nothing remotely shaped like a caste. Nothing that might be mistaken for a castle.
@LegoSonicBoy:
My name is included in the playtester credits for 3rd Edition. That also happens to be the last time I ever played any version of D&D, so ironically I’ve never played the actual ruleset I got playtester credit for. I think they sent our DM the alpha rules, we tried those out, they made a bunch of changes and sent the beta rules out, we ran those for a while, and when we finished, they made yet more revisions and published what might have been an untested variation of the rules.
@KaiserCoaster said:

it all depends on how well it sells. I believe Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill were both given a tiny percentage of the profits of Star Wars--what became a New Hope. Although they have, they basically never had to work again if they didnt want to. If the set becomes a high seller or perennial--being out there for years, then the potential for a high pay day could be greater than if they were paid an upfront flat fee.
This should be fun. Sadly, I don't have the time nor talent to MOC anything, but can't wait to see the submissions!
What's wrong with a Lego version of Spelljammer ships?!? https://www.google.com/search?q=spelljammer+ships&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjbgOPTy8n6AhXwGlkFHQMnBHMQ_AUoAXoECAIQAw&biw=1490&bih=754&dpr=1.25.
In all likely hood a like to see a classic monster done in the same vane as Bowser 71411 received
... Entrees that I will be disappointed if they are not submitted, but are way beyond my skill level to design:
- UCS Beholder
- UCS Tiamat
- Recreation of 1st edition AD&D Players Handbook cover (thieves removing gem eye from demon statue) - really there are several iconic handbook covers, this one always comes to mind first.
- Drizzt Do'Urden Bust
- dice sets made from Lego... probably 5x sized
- sigh, there will likely be several submissions related to the OG D&D cartoon... it's unavoidable.
- UCS Owlbear. well, not really, but I put that here more as a dare.
I think the Beholder would offer the best value for a set. Don't get me wrong, I would totally be down for a Tiamat. The cost of the set would, however, be painful if they represent Tiamat correctly.

I respect what TSR(?) was trying to do with Dark Sun, but yeah that would be like LEGO giving us sets based on the wrong Avatar franchise. Oh, wait....

My thoughts exactly. It seems that many RPG players haven't noticed that this lineup of Ninjago was essentially a dumbed down D&D system with rules included in the box.
Anyway, I hope the winning entry will be a location not some figure or mech- like set.

I absolutely respect that person's (his or her) views. Saying that something will "offend all christians," of which I happen to be one, is a factually incorrect statement. I also wonder (and can guess) which other "things" that LEGO is making that are "satanic" and intended to offend (again) people like myself. Having "views" is great. Making blanket and unsupported statements is not. Speaking of which, what do you consider "really sketchy" about D&D (bearing in mind that I have indeed played quite a bit of it)? I ask not to challenge or suggest that YOUR views are wrong, but rather because I am genuinely curious.
How do we want to do this?

I was definitely thinking about that Handbook cover with the statue! And Tiamat ... and the cartoon crew ... and the folks from Icewind Dale .... And I assume, like Purpledave, that we can use things from the Dragonlance, Spelljammer, etc. campaigns. This is going to be so much fun!
Man, I love D&D.
And with Lego collaborating, it might just bring the spark back into my Lego collecting. Damn it I’m going to be broke
I definitely think a Beholder would look great, and would be my first pick to vote on
I would be really curious to see how many D&D players have incorporated LEGO into their games in the past - I personally had a one-off with some friends a while ago where all our characters were built across three players' worth of classic Castle sets. It feels like a match made in heaven - albeit that some of the more obscure classes, races, monsters, etc. would be more difficult to build with Lego's current parts selection and still appear recognizable. So no doub this contest will be a logical step for the many DMs already building their campaigns.
Y'all, just leave it be. The original poster has a persecution complex, the comment is gone. Focus on the awesome stuff that MOC designers will inevitably come up with. I have some ideas of what I want to try, but they are very ambitious and I am not a great Lego designer. That said, I feel like there are definitely a wide variety of ideas, some of which I've seen here, and probably plenty we've never even considered yet!
I would loooooooove a full lineup of this theme. Obviously there’s issues as far as hasbro goes, but please- I’ve wanted medieval fantasy back ever since they cancelled the last one in, what, 2008?
I don’t even play dnd, but would likely buy every set this theme brings (unless it’s like the statues/busts, just give me play sets, please)
@PurpleDave: Heh, I was invited to LEGO Universe's closed beta, then proceeded to get kicked to the curb by region locking (the game never launched in my region). Being immortalized as a playtester is much cooler, though.
LEGO + D&D officially? Me squealing with delight!

Will I be broke as a result of this LEGO-D&D set? Probably
Would a LEGO beholder be cool? I’d have nothing against a beholder. Here’s mine based on Gargantos: https://brickshelf.com/gallery/AmperZand/Fantasy/beholder.jpg . But if it has to be just one monster, I’d prefer Tiamat. It is Dungeons & DRAGONS after all :~)

I have played DnD since '83 and still play today. I have been collecting Lego since '78. I did not merge my Lego into DnD until about 10 years ago, but it is easy enough to do and can offer lots of low cost variety as long as people do not mind the look of minfigs. Lego accents are a great way to make the map pop (fountains, arches, statues, bridges, etc.).
Love D&D, love LEGO, this made my day! UCS Gelatinous Cube!
More seriously, I imagine some Rube Goldberg-esc mechanical display that represents these unplanned unexpected moments that happen when the players, dungeon master, and dice all bounce off each other in just the right way to create unforgettable stories to be told for years to come. Arguably not unique to D&D but it's what I like about it and things like it. Doubt I have the skills to pull that off.
In any case, I love dragons. They have to do at least one dragon. And a dungeon.
@Sutures:
I remember wanting to watch that show so bad as a kid (and not being allowed to). Somehow an episode of that ended up being syndicated on a channel I was able to record it from a couple years ago. The most striking thing I noticed is that the _ONLY_ hero character who ever directly attacked any enemy characters was the person with the invisibility cloak. Everyone else had to attack stuff near enemy characters, but the one character you couldn’t actually see could have hit someone in the face with a baseball bat, because you never would have seen it.
@Mandalorian6285:
D&D is really sketchy if the only source of information you have on what it’s about is a stack of 50 year old tracts. The only people who would be in any real danger are those who’ve been psyched up to believe they absolutely will become the Devil’s marionette if they so much as roll a D20. They also probably have no idea the true reason a Ouija Board requires two people to “operate”.
I know very little of this "sphere" of entertainment (i.e. D&D worlds) but this might be so outside of my normal 'realm/theme' and combined with the tremendous skills of some builders that I might be interested in getting such a set (this will most likely be a novelty item for a person like me - probably akin to fantasy castle but still novelty enough to be interesting). If I recall correctly, the premise of Stranger Things was a game of D&D.
On thing I would suggest for Lego organisation regarding this: they should consider 3 sets: set A: 1 to 200 pieces (roughly $10-$20), set B: 200 to 600 pieces ($40-$60) and set C: 600 pieces and up ($100+).
I expect the winning set to either be some iconic thing (like Tiamat), or a type of modular kit where you could create different characters and make a tavern, or wall pieces to make a dungeon section. Either way, that model would be a play model.
I roll to disbelieve.
Not really, this is so cool! Funny that I said that 76205 was the Closest we'd ever get to a Lego Beholder, looks like that may not be the case for much longer.
@Mandalorian6285: Lots of things can seem sketchy if you never bother to familiarize yourself with them. I mean, the reason I started reading Harry Potter was to see if there was any actual reason for some of the pearl-clutching some Christians were having. Didn't find anything, and now I'm quite a fan of the series. Of curse, I don't consider myself a Christian anymore, so take that as you will.
Of course, we already have a LEGO Demogorgon.

Funnily enough I've been using a similar combination for mind flayers myself for a while now! I did start a remorhaz design ages ago but couldn't get it stable at minifigure scale.
Independently of this news, I just want to throw it out there that I find the marketing phenomenon "[brand] x [brand]" immensely irritating.

Ah…remembered and found a reference. The Flumph. Here’s a snippet from the D&D wiki:
“ Screen Rant compiled a list of the game's "10 Most Powerful (And 10 Weakest) Monsters, Ranked" in 2018, calling this one of the weakest, saying "In order to defeat the flumph, all you have to do is turn it over, then it becomes helpless. You don't even need to unsheathe your sword or cast a spell, as your hands will do the job just fine. Just make sure to pack some Axe body spray in order to alleviate the effects of the flumph's smelly spray. If you ever have a character who is slain by a flumph in battle, then you are honor-bound to give up playing Dungeons & Dragons and take up a new hobby, as you will never be able to wash away the stain of losing an adventurer to a Lawful Good smelly jellyfish.”
Apparently there exists some merchandise of this already. Who knew?
@Mandalorian6285 - just to provide maybe a bit more context - Dungeons & Dragons also has paladins of justice and chivalry, druids that protect nature and the woodland people who live in it, clerics who vow to uphold the tenets of law and goodness, and yes, wizards, who protect those without their innate gift of magic even unto death.
And the general assumption is that the players are the GOOD GUYS.
@Mandalorian6285:
Taken completely on it’s own, what you see in D&D is more a reflection of yourself than the game itself. Taken with someone standing behind you and shouting about how evil it is and why it will lead to your eternal damnation, it’s hard to imagine being able to render an objective opinion.
@maffyd:
That’s the assumption, at least. I’ve had two experiences that ran counter to that. One, the GM arranged for one of our group to play an NPC assassin who had infiltrated our party. It took a while for everyone at the table to realize that, yes, one of the other players at the table really was attacking us, and doing so quite effectively (at least a few PCs were incapacitated). The other was a guy who got pissed that we didn’t let him finish searching for hidden treasures before moving on to the next room, so he decided on his own to do the same thing (not at all effectively, this time). His character was a dwarf, which resulted in the term “party dwarf” to describe a traitor in our midst.
Very nice, but I am even more hyped by the rumored new LOTR D2C set! If it is true, it will most likely be Minas Tirith :-)
Man I've wanted some sort of LEGO DnD product for ages now, customizable fantasy worlds are always great.
While I've never had enough friends to do it, I always wanted to turn my LEGO Minecraft table into a DnD map (or I guess, overworld map)
Also there's a fan group... I wanna say Red Star Games? That has been working on a BIONICLE themed tabletop RPG for a few years now. Looks like it'd be lots of fun!
@Mandalorian6285 I appreciate the reply, and have a lovely day!
So I can use LEGO bricks, elements *AND* pieces?! Thank goodness. I thought I might have to make a submission from just bricks and elements with no pieces, or worse, only bricks with no elements OR pieces.
Anyway, IndyLUG was using LEGO for 100% of a D&D game way back in 2006. The entire landscape and all characters were LEGO.
https://brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=252425
This couldn't be more perfect. I'm only in one D&D session right now, but there are many moments I could do.
We need a Minsc and Boo Minifigure/hamsterpet and maybe a nice Gelatinous Cube and some displacer beasts......
@crazylegoman:
BrickQuest is not in any way associated with D&D (the creator is a member of MichLUG), beyond that the two share basic fantasy RPG stylings. BTW, the character “sheets” are also brickbuilt.

@crazylegoman: Very cool. I agree with @PurpleDave on the mimic.
Mixed emotions on this one. Played some D&D as a kid, and Warhammer Fantasy Battle, but it kind of fell off my radar (unlike Lego, or Star Wars). Seems like a good time for the world's greatest toy makers to cash in on some free popularity, thanks to THAT show and all. Maybe I'm just an old cynic but I hate to imagine what the watered down playability will be like ...
