Review: Wicked Brick Speed Champions display stand

Posted by ,

We've been reviewing Wicked Brick's products for over five years now, and we are always impressed with their design and quality.

The UK-based company is constantly expanding and improving its products and one of the latest additions to its range is a selection of display solutions for Speed Champions vehicles which includes everything from a display stand for a single vehicle priced at £9.99, to a wall mounted case for holding 24 costing £200.

The stand I've been sent is designed to hold 12 vehicles. This particular one is not enclosed but if you want one that is you can buy them for freestanding or mounting on a wall. Various sizes are available, from 1x1 to 4x6, both open and enclosed.

The pieces are precision cut from 5mm sheets of genuine Perspex. They slot together securely, and it takes about 5 minutes to construct. The most fiddly and time-consuming task is removing the protective film from the parts, which has to be done before you build it. Long nails come in handy!

There are no screws or other connectors -- the only 'tool' you need is a lint-free cloth to clean off the fingerprints, cat hairs and dust that will inevitably cling to it during construction.

The cars are positioned with their tyres in a slot, and held at an angle by a small stand at the back. The minifig is mounted on the two studs at the front.

It's simple, very effective and accommodates both 6- and 8-wide cars except for outliers like the dragster in 76904.

The stand offers an attractive and space-saving way to display your collection and the overall effect is excellent.

I had better get on and build the 76908 Lamborghini Countach that I got cheap at Amazon last month to fill the gap :)

This particular stand costs £62.99 and measures 64cm wide by 31cm high. The full range of Wicked Brick's display solutions for Speed Speed Champions is available now, with free shipping on orders over £100 within the UK. Worldwide shipping is available via DHL Express.

Here's an example of an enclosed display case:

One reason I asked Wicked Brick to send this particular size is because it fits neatly in one of my Billy bookcases, along with a load of other seemingly random stuff I have on display at the moment!

(Please excuse the wide-angle distortion of my phone's camera!)

Thanks to Kat at Wicked Brick for sending this product for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

My interest isn't so much in the Speed Champions stand (which does look good) as the seemingly additional glass shelves you have. Where did you get them from, @Huw? Or are they IKEA staples I've never noticed?

At the end of the article you can read: "One reason I asked Wicked Brick to send this particular size is because it fits neatly in one of my Billy bookcases" Billy is indeed an Ikea staple.

Ikea, but I've had them >15 years so they might not be available any more. Neither are the 350mm deep Billys :-(

Stand looks great! I'm pleased to see companies offering display solutions for these because Speed Champions look SUPER awesome when displayed together.

I considered this display option when looking for ways to better store and show off my collection. It seemed a little expensive to me so I went with a car-park style display that I got off Etsy. I'm quite happy with it but dang if clear lucite stands aren't the classiest.

Thanks for responding - I have plenty of Billy bookcases, but it was the transparent shelves I was interested in. Thanks, @Huw, for your response. Next time I dare to enter IKEA Croydon, I'll have a look for them.

I wonder how many people will be triggered by the inconsistent approach to applying stickers and that only a couple of the minifigs are shown without their helmets.

You can find out the reason I didn't apply them all to the Nissan here: https://brickset.com/article/48266/the-nissan-gt-r-nismo-without-stickers

As it's now a road car no helmet is needed, and the Urus is a road car too so no helmet needed there either!

It's in a glass-doored Billy bookcase so not a problem but if you prefer enclosed ones are also available.

It's a real shame IKEA doesn't offer the deep Billy shelves anymore, as those were perfect for displaying LEGO, especially stuff with the standard 32x32 baseplates.

That's a very slick display with a very proud price.

Always wondered how the minifigures' studs are attached to the perspex in WB display solutions...

If only I had $200.... or the space to display the car rack.

I personally use floating magazine shelves to store mine. They tend to be very long and narrow with a lip so they don't protrude far out the wall but still have space for a line of cars.

You can get them online in a range of materials and colours. A cheap option which can blend in more to the home than some of the clear plastic solutions.

I have a 32 by 32 plate edged with 4x2 red and with slopers and plates (like the kerb of a race track) and screwed them to the wall to display my speed champions. Would share an image but not able to. Can fit 8 of the newer 8 wide or 10 of the older 6 wide. Uses wall space rather than shelf space!

That open case doesn't look nearly as nice as the enclosed ones. I'm not too impressed these days with products that are just laser cut and then the user assembles them. They shouldn't be this pricey. But the other cases, the enclosed ones, those look really nice. And I really appreciate the graphic design put into the background images. The NES one is especially nice.

By in Puerto Rico,

Absolutely love @wickedbricks display cases. I tried ordering them here to Puerto Rico, which in terms of shipping sometimes falls under United States as we do have USPS here, and other times falls under an Independent Island (which it isn't) and thus WB won't ship here for some reason. Really bummed as their cases look amazing and many of my friends in the states have them. One day... one day...

By in United States,

The engineering work on the display stand is impressive, considering its all press fit with no external fasteners; but having worked with acrylic and laser cutters before its a bit absurd that the price tag is $72 USD for the 4X3 case when there is only about $10-$15 of material in there. I get it, buy low-sell high at its finest; but anybody with the right software and tools could whip this up themselves for a fraction of the cost. My campus has a free laser cut I can use for example, so all I would have to pay for is price of the acrylics sheets if I did it myself.

Does bigger cars fit, like the Ford Bronco R?

I think some of the cars look better without any of their stickers, some with only 1/4 or a few. Some of the minifigures have really cool hairpieces, particularly the female drivers, and displaying some with no helmets outside their vehicles not only makes a lot of sense but looks great.

The versatile nature of LEGO is one of the things I love about it. I assume many people who are into it feel somewhat similarly.

These displays are SO FREAKING AWESOME!!! This may get me to figure out how to get a bunch over to the states.

By in United States,

I love their display options at Wicked Brick, I have a few. I just wish it didn't take so long to get. They need to find some more partners to work with globally to cut down production time, cost and shipping time.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

It looks good but it's not cheap. That's nearly half the price of the car to display it...

By in United States,

I love the second shelf from the bottom on your display. With the whole "Icons of Italian motoring" theme reminds me of a setup I have, except that I don't have 77942.

I emailed them the same question this morning waiting for a response. I am looking at getting the large enclosed wall mount model to display 24 of the 8 stud wide.

It doesn't bother me, but it did take longer than I'd like to admit for me to work out that the white car in the middle I couldn't quite recognise was the Nissan without its stickers on.

I would think so, the Urus fits and that's about the same size.

@Huw Can you put the 2022 Batmobile or the 2021 Tumbler in them?

Nice design and quality but crazy expensive and who knows when you'll actually receive your order from them.

The dust will killing it, because of all the micro scratches after cleaning.
And for 200,- I guess I could get a better alternative."

Yeah I dread cleaning mine for that reason. Wet microfiber clothes seem to be the best solution I've found thus far. Agree very pricey but did pull the trigger on the 24x wall display ladt week as I need to make room.

In my own experience, we had some leftover Nascar die-cast acrylic car shelves that work really well for display. Especially with a closed front for dust and drop protection and has a reflective backing.
