City Advent Calendar - Day 4

Posted by ,

Things are starting on a decidedly Christmassy note, with Billy mailing his letter to Santa. What seasonal activity will there be next? The answer is only found behind door number four.

Music is a key part of Christmas celebrations, so this piano fits in perfectly! I really like that the printed tile has been used for the keyboard, and the two candles serve to set the mood well.

Bonus for this build is the very cute dark stone grey cat, which has only been seen three times before, and in mostly much higher priced sets.

On the fourth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me a kitten playing the piano.

Hey, this is pretty neat. Nice pet, useful piano, I like it.

This might be symbolism for 'my cat is playing piano on me! Help!'
With cats, you call it 'playing piano' when they stretch out their paws on you and tap them on you with claws outstretched. Those will go right into you and depending on the cat they might even get stuck. It hurts, a lot!

Funny thing is that we have the hardest time with keeping the cats off the mantle and the top of the piano, which both contain a lot of photos. So this build is truly real for us. I think this one wins the day!

Candles are the number one cause of housefires. Adding a kitty undoubtedly doubles the risk.

Great Day, nice set.

And yet, people complained when the advent calendar was filled with firemen.

Candles set up badly are the number one cause of housefires. Candles set up safely are very pretty.

Nice built but I’m missing 2 parts in mine! A brown 1x2 plate and a little flame.

Make sure you crochet a nice cover for the fire extinguisher you'd better make a part of your pretty display.

Most candles contain lead wicks and other contaminants which contribute to indoor pollution.

By in United States,

We already saw the cat on the box and were excited for it. I opened today's window and there WERE 2 BAGS! We got a double! Now we have 2 grey cats for our 2 grey boys (one passed around this time last year)

I'm going to go ahead and assume that these candles mostly contain ABS.

Hmm, that sounds like BS.

@StyleCounselor:
Indeed. A lacquered and seasoned piano, two precariously balanced lit candles, and a cat that’s decided to go exploring. What could possibly go wrong?

@Pongo:
So, true story, someone I knew in college was working with the summer theatre group, which houses the entire cast and crew on campus. She was taking a shower when the cottage where she was staying burned down. The cause? She left a candle burning _on_her_bed_! Actually lighting candles was banned on campus at that point. Afterwards, simply having candles on campus was banned. The cottage she was housed in was called Crispell Cottage, but afterwards we all referred to it as Crispy Cottage.

@StyleCounselor:
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/getting-the-lead-out/
While lead-core candle wicks used to be a common thing in the past, they have been banned in the US for decades, and the apparent source for any modern scare was originally framed as just being about “soot damage”, which claims that there was lead-poisoning involved slipping in well after the fact. This has all the earmarks of a conspiracy theory that small candle manufacturers may have latched onto as a way to market their wares (after all, if they’re warning you about the dangers, they can’t possibly be doing the same thing, right?).

Most modern candles are made of paraffin wax, because it burns clean. Candle wicks are usually braided cotton, which causes the tip to curl over outside the flame, where the end is burned off (aka “self-trimming wicks”). If a metal core is used, it’s usually zinc, which is a dietary supplement. Common additives to wicks include ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate, both of which are fertilizers that are considered safe, and the latter of which is used as a food additive. Any soot deposits left by burning a candle are likely tied to the type of wax used. In ancient days, animal tallow was the most common source, as it was easy to obtain in most cultures, but it definitely burns dirty and will leave soot stains above where candles are burned regularly (it also reportedly has an unpleasant odor when burned).

Comprehensive, as always. Yet, there's also the issue that most modern scented products contain hormone-disrupting chemicals.

I used to love candles for 'setting the mood.' I mean, who doesn't love a little fire in the house? But, not at the cost of injesting artificial estrogen, lead (assuming you're not 100% correct), etc., and burning down the house. Yikes!

I've concentrated on other ways of bringing the heat! ;)

In America, we always called it "making muffins", "making biscuits" (American biscuits are more like British scones, while American scones are something entirely different), or "baking", because it's like they are kneading dough.

Gravatar

@ricecake:
I’ve only ever heard it called kneading, because it’s, as you say, like kneading dough. The rest of these terms sound like local euphemisms.

Now, my first cat had an entirely different behavior. She was half-feral when we got her, and never rally took to domesticated life. She’d let you pet her for a while, but when she was done with that, she’d stand up, quickly flex _all_ of her claws (front and back), give a quick growl, and hop off your lap. Woe betide the unfortunate soul who didn’t get the hint…

My 4 yo son lost the kitten in under 60 seconds. Makes me wonder if he ate it!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have to say, it bugs me that they printed the piano keys off-center like that. Pianos don’t have half-width keys at each end! Just shift the whole thing half a key to the right, eliminate the rightmost line, and you should be good.
