City Advent Calendar - Day 8

Posted by ,

Yesterday we had a fun stand with cookies. Tippy certainly seems to like them, and I'm sure they'll be popular with the City denizens. As we start on the second week of the calendar, let's see what surprise lies behind the eighth door.

The food theme continues - or rather, the sweets theme! This is a very fancy layer cake, with a slice to one side and a mug. Maybe it's because I've just done some holiday baking, but this reminded me of gingerbread with thick layers of icing.

This cake is pretty enormous on a minifig scale, and there should be plenty for all the residents of the two houses on the playmat.

There seems to be a sort of rivalry going between Friends and City the last two days!

It's pretty weird that the jumper 2x2 the cake is on is the same color as the cake. That looks distracting. And what's the thing on the side? A gingerbread house? A slice of cake from the future when the now whole cake has been cut?

That said, a fun build! Generous in parts too, although we might have just been nickle-and-dimed the previous years with how tiny the builds have become.

I thought the playmat was one house, a snowy yard, and a stable... it has more hay in it than I have in my front room anyway

Is this cake a lie?

You've (unintentionally?) highlighted a problem I have with modern Warm Gold; it looks far too Nougat-y under imperfect lighting conditions. Particularly on smaller pieces. I've even had family members (who are less familiar with LEGO's color palette) mistake it for a caramel brown.

My first thought was a crepe cake when I saw this.

@Spritetoggle, @CCC,

Well I'll be... you're right! I legitimately didn't notice that was pearl gold. Thanks!

Now it looks just slightly less weird. But still not the greatest contrast.

@CCC:
Or it’s a cartoon cake, where every time you cut out a slice, the cake regrows to fill the void because the animators are too lazy to change the size of the remaining cake.

Interesting observation.

This build is the best of the Day so far, and that's saying very little. I'm impressed with how Lego™ has combined shrinkflation with their $45 price gouging. Lego™ is obviously one of the worst corporate offenders in the current economic scheme. I think they operate this way and still sleep soundly in their silk, Ferrari-red sheets because they view their products as completely discretionary. They're not wrong. Rest easy KKK. Your day of reckoning is coming...

I'd recommend taking a step back and doing some deep breathing exercises, or something. Couldn't hurt, at least,

$45? I don't know what you talk about... I just bought this calendar for €12 yesterday.

Nice score. The $45 is the rice of the licensed ACS. I suppose HP n SW are not total dumpster fires. But, those aren't worth full price. Amigos, City and GG aren't worth moree than $20.

Thought it was a stack of pancakes. Is there any official descriptions anywhere for these builds or is it a case of 'it is what you want it to be'?

The key word here is "yesterday", these calendars tends to be deeply discounted around Dec 5th. I haven't bought any calendars until now, but as many of them have nice figures and parts I bought the City, Friends and HP ones when I saw them at 1/3 price (~10e instead of 30 or 40).
