Ferrari Daytona SP3: The Sense of Perfection

Ferrari Daytona SP3: The Sense of Perfection

©2022 LEGO Group

If you missed out on securing one of the limited edition copies of Ferrari Daytona SP3: The Sense of Perfection earlier in the year you now have the opportunity to purchase a non-limited one, which comes without the slip case and is £15 cheaper, at £54.99 / $59.99.

We reviewed the book in May and noted that it goes into unprecedented detail about every aspect of the design and manufacture of the set, which makes it one of the most interesting LEGO books we have ever read.

It is thus the perfect Christmas gift for yourself, or someone else with a keen interest in behind the scenes at LEGO.

Once again, Canada is left out for this item. Got a 404 from the link.

Who do they think they are pricing it like that

By in United States,

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Been twisting and turning to justify the $250-$300 to get this on ebay and now, I have the book and $200+ to spare.

Love this website!

Although the car does not interest me (not the theme I collect) the book sounds really cool. I would be interested in that type of book covering other large Lego sets.

By in United States,

I know that basing something like this on a premium adult set likely creates more synergy with the kind of target audience for a book like this... but oh, what I would give for more kid-targeted "story themes" to get this level of behind-the-scenes treatment. I'm an avid connoisseur of artbooks for movies, games, and TV shows, but apart from the VERY limited edition Bionicle G2 one and the two for The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago movie, Lego hasn't really published much like that. I would've loved to see something like that about the development of themes like Elves, Nexo Knights, or The Lego Movie 2, let alone still ongoing themes like Ninjago, Friends, and Monkie Kid.

The idea behind the book is nice, but too bad it's wasted on a technic set.

I would buy one on the glory days of trains up to Horizon Express, covering, 4.5v, 9v, 12v, etc. They might want to do it while those people who were involved are ALIVE, but they won't, sadly. I've seen pictures of what might've been, and I'd buy an art / history book of that so fast it'd break a land speed record.

I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but $60 for this seems fair. I did some quick searching for licensed coffee table style books such as this one and most fall in the $40-$80 MSRP range it looks like (some are cheaper, and some more expensive, but that seems to be the average range). This having a $60 MSRP seems to fall in line with current MSRP market rates for this style of product.

The print run on this is also probably still very low. That drives up costs by a huge margin. Full-color printing and hardback binding aren’t cheap!

The first thing I thought when I read all the comments balking at the price, "have you never bought a coffee table book before?"

Anyway, I think it's great they are making this available for people who missed out on the numbered version.

I love sports cars, and at the same time I do care about climate change. Maybe everyone should get a quotum for emissions, so we can all choose what we find most important. That would be more fair towards rich vs poor as well.
The good thing about a car like this is not only the people driving it enjoy it, but also people like me who see it driving by.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sorry, no room for this on the coffee table. That's already occupied by 10307 Eiffel Tower.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

For a book with such detail 60 is a reasonable price. Be aware this is not a reprint of the original. Lego's website mentions this version has a glossy hard cover. Unlike the original it does not come with a slipcover case and is not a limited edition. Nevertheless, I appreciate a reprint is made so the book is available for a wider audience.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I was fortunate enough (or crazy enough) to get one of the original copies. I really like it. But I was really disappointed to see so many being sold on eBay immediately afterwards by those trying to make a quick profit at the expense of others. I know there's nothing much that can be done to stop this.

So when I read this article I'm now really glad to hear that others have a better opportunity of getting a copy. And even at a better price. That's one up on those scalpers! :D

Gravatar
By in Japan,

A bit pricey, but I'll probably buy it. Somehow it's much more interesting to me than the set it's about. Though who knows if the book can actually change that....

That said, I do feel a bit bad for the people who managed to get the original, limited release. Not for the scalpers obviously, but for the real fans who paid a premium price to get something unique....which suddenly is a lot less rare. Sure, the slipcase is gone, but it seems the book itself is exactly the same? I feel the least they could have done was make a different cover to differentiate it from the limited version.

Nope. I can see it on the USA site but not available in Canada (weird because all our stuff in Canada comes from the US plant - Enfield, CT). Not a biggy, I'll live ;-)

Well, yes, I am in a bit of a red-tinged fugue over being reminded that they cancelled my order for the slipcased version because I got it in nice and early…before they reduced the NA purchase limit to one, blanket cancelled every order even if it was for just one copy (like mine), and blocked them from placing a new order until the cancellation finally cleared several hours after the book was sold out. One member of my LUG and one member of this site both told me they ordered their copy at least half an hour after I placed mine, and theirs shipped.

But I still want the book because it will make a good companion piece to the Unbound book on the design process of elements.

@LegoAndWhisky:
I’d still kinda prefer the slipcase be included…

Went through the same thing, and feel the same. I'm not sure yet if I can re-stoke the feeling for wanting it. Moreover, I'm also getting the Unbound book and this seems potentially redundant.

The main thing is I don't want to support Lego pricks bragging about how many Ferraris they have while increasing prices for non-existent corporate inflation (and decreasing quality and customer support)! I don't want that crap in my house! Inflation is real for us because corporations like Lego are making it so. Read and inform yourself (if it isn't obvious)!

Yours is sadly an unpopular opinion (but I totally agree with you).

Society would be so much better in so many ways if we stopped glorifying cars.

@Wrecknbuild said:

I think something rather rude when people drive along in cars like this that make farting sounds, be they expensive or simply 'modified' to sound stupid. Now, your knee-jerk reaction might be to assume that I'm 'jealous' of the fool behind the wheel, but what their childish car informs me is that the driver's main priorities are not safety, consideration for others, and fuel-efficiency.

Which is why videos of these little pillocks showing off to their equally brain dead mates, and then driving straight into a lamppost are so satisfying!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I almost forgot they made this book with its super pretentious title.
As I haven't read it I can't say whether the book lives up to its title. But they couldn't have chosen a more self-congratulatory title if they tried IMHO.

Absolutely!

... it's just a shame that they're merely the tip of the iceberg. Everyone who chooses a car for looks & style & 'prestige' & oversizeness & sound BEFORE considering that their choice may not be the most efficient in terms of fuel or space it takes up is part of the problem.

Cars are an unfortunate necessity for many, but sensible considerations take a backseat (ha) because we've been conditioned to glorify the automobile; LEGO's supercars and accompanying self-pleasuring coffee table book are all part of that worship. Our towns & cities would be so much safer and more livable if we, as a society, could simply treat cars as tools rather than a god-given right to take up space.

By in United States,

It does make me laugh that all the upset comments here regarding how much cars suck are from Europe. Hey I can't blame you, I wouldn't want to drive there either!

In all seriousness, $60 for a book is fine if you're really into that thing but personally, if I'm gonna spend $60 on LEGO's website, I may as well get ... actual LEGO parts.

More specifically, from the UK. Masters at creating great looking yet generally horrible cars. And it indeed is pretty annoying to drive there, having to avoid all those people driving on the wrong side of the road all the time.

Luckily there's still Italy to make up for that.

"I don't like electric cars (BOWs, batteries on wheels): they're ugly, they're not recycable,

I agree with you on the expensive argument, but on nothing else.
I have been driving a Tesla Model 3 for almost four years now, and most of the time its juice comes from the PV on our roof, hence not "stealing" anyone else's. And as for "consume too much electricity", the Model 3 consumes very little electricity for its performance. In general, EVs are far more efficient than ICE powered vehicles anyway.
Plus, every car (and battery) is recyclable, be it petrol driven or battery electric. Read up on the subject if you don't believe me.

As for the car itself, despite some quirks it's easily the best I have ever driven. And that's coming from someone who up to that one had only driven "premium" German cars.

It is showing as sold out on the UK site. So much for not being a limited edition.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

@VintageDude : like I said, we use our PV to generate our own electricity. The output varies between about 5 kWh on a short and miserable winter day and up to 60 kWh on a nice and sunny day in summer. The majority of that electricity is sold and fed back into the national grid, hence instead of "stealing" (I wager to guess that even that neighbour you mention is still paying his electric bill) we are actually providing more electricity than we use ourselves.

By the way, the prospect of rising electricity prices was one of the reasons why we had PV installed in the first place back in 2019. We are very fortunate and thankful to have it, especially under current circumstances.
By the way, even on long drives during winter I never had a problem with range, even with the heating at comfortable levels.
Then again, German winters in general are not as harsh as those in Sweden I guess.
