Vintage set of the week: Gear set
Posted by Huwbot,
This week's vintage set is 811 Gear set, released during 1974. It's one of 6 Universal Building Set sets produced that year. It contains 177 pieces.
It's owned by 105 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

HHHHHHNNNNNGGGG
Look at those 2x4s
So much potential
Look at that 'tractor' image in the top right corner. That image has been retouched somehow: the 'engine' block is delimited by a black line and there is some 'transparency' of the blue parts; weird. I wonder why the felt a need to do that.
45 years before 31095 : Fairground Carousel and it already had 2 of the builds then, the 4 seat airplane ride and the ferris wheel. Quite amazing to see the similarities in gearing, and scale, even before minifigs.
@HOBBES I think the black line is a bad interaction between the red and blue colors in the film, and that what looks like transparency is a reflection of the tread on those pieces.
This set really meshes with me. A set you can really sink your teeth into.
Speaking of windmills…
@MCLegoboy:
I know, right? You could make a box, a brick, a crate, a rectangular enclosure, or a bale of any of five different substances.
Those 2x4s...and those GEARS....yes, I know that they're BIG compared technics-stuff; but still...and yes: 35446, 35443, and 35442 are close but...not...
What a beautiful set.
THIS here is what should be done for that 4+ line. Simplify and have some large parts, but generally this is what Lego should be featuring more in their 4+ line.
Wow, as interesting as this is, it's really outdated. Somenow I got one of them grey 2x4 Technic bricks. Probably from the set 107.
Before there were string spools, there was this. Love it.
Windmills featured many times in these old universal and basic sets. They were always a build I did with the sets. And yet, you don't see many windmills in today's sets. I want to see them back. Windmill for you Modular town anyone? Bakery with flour windmill on top for next modular.
It's another Festivus Miracle!
Sorry, it was my last chance to get that pit before we start the more traditional holidays like NBA25th and Boxing Day. ;)
Before there was Brickset, there was Gear Set.
Man these early Bionicles look weird
It would be great to get a modern basic Technic set that had all these sorts of models possible.
I do like those 10x20 Brickplates - just picked up 4 of them in green.

I was just looking at the image and thinking "you know, there is a piece in this basic 70s set that I really would enjoy having.."
Gotta appreciate how much you could do with not even that many pieces. And those big gears were amazing. Sure, it's quite a bit clunkier than Technic, but for kids this is absolutely perfect. I'd love to see Lego do a Classic set like this...

Oh, man, I just realized something. You started with December 2nd. This was RSotD for December 1st:

This entire time you’ve been off by one day.
Excellent set. The only gears I had were in 802-1 but even that found it's way into plenty of roundabouts and windmills!
Obviously not a set for those with an imagination deficiency. They should stick to modern bricks, where every conceivable shape has been made for them to compensate for their lack of ingenuity.

From one old person to another: if I may interrupt your shouting at the clouds, for just one second...

I agree with what the guy is saying in the article and I would add one more thing: pieces are getting more detailed because things are shrinking in the Lego world. Back in the days, there were the maxi-fig or homemaker people (i.e 200). then came the minifigs and then came the mini statue/trophy (don't know their exact name). Same on the friend line: minidoll and recently microdoll. The Lego Harry Potter castle is built in microscale and there are quite a few model that are built at that scale Saturn V amongst others). Imagine an advent calendar with the pieces available in the early 60s - it could not be done - now it can be done because there are parts specialised enough to build something that is recognizable even with 8 to 15 parts - try that with 2x2, 2x3 and 2x4 bricks. Those who indulge in the Technic line of Lego would also have noticed that the panels are getting smaller year after year. With the latest ones released for 2023 I believe Lego has reached the minimum it can do in terms of Lego Technic panels size - remember, smaller parts take less plastic to make! I believe there is significantly more imagination now and this is also reflected by a new acronym: NPU which means nice part usage and relates to the use of a part in a way that was not its intended original use (one of my favourite thing in original Lego sets and/or MOCs along with inventive building techniques). Anyhow to each his own, if you want basic, there is still the 'Classic' line of products (I bought quite a few of these in recent past and you can do quite a lot with them - see Rebrickable in case you face the white page syndrome). Happy holidays to all (who celebrate at this time of the year)!
@Ridgeheart:
Psst! He doesn’t like it when you do that!

That's the timestamp I see for Blue LEGO Car. RSotD/VSotW post at 2:01am, UK time. I'm guessing there must be some setting where you can adjust the timestamps to match your local time. Anyone living east of the Atlantic sees them post sometime during the day they post for. Anyone living west of the Atlantic sees them post progressively earlier during the evening before, with Hawaii-Aleutian getting them at 4pm. When specific dates occur, there's always a lot of east/west confusion over which day RPotD/RSotD were posted for. It's less of an issue for VSotW just because it runs the whole week, so there's six days overlap of agreement between the two hemispheres.
