What is your favourite theme of 2022?
Posted by CapnRex101,
Following dramatic expansion in 2020 and 2021, the number of new themes was reduced to only one in 2022.
Nevertheless, the sets produced still encompass 28 different themes, but which theme has been your favourite of 2022? View the options and respond to our poll below...
Which theme received your vote this year? Let us know in the comments.

Once again, Creator 3-in-1 is my favourite. Fun models, lots of variety in subject and price, and very good value.
As a theme, I think it represents the essence of Lego.
My vote goes to BrickLink for their Designer Program.
What theme is ICIEEMPIONDSARRS?
Not sure about this year, but I know Friends 2023 is my most anticipated line.
Friends has been absolutely outstanding lately. The variety and quality of the range in 2022 was fantastic, especially with the larger sets.
My favourites are Icons and Ideas. Icons wins by having more releases that I've bought this year.
Icons (old Creator Expert) has become such an extensive theme that I don't think it will be a close competition. On top of that, the amazing 90th Anniversary sets are also considered Icons, making it even more unfair for other themes...
Finally got me first Architecture set this year in form of the Great Pyramid of Giza, never thought that I would enjoy the Architecture line so much.
@Huw in terms of themes, The Batman film sets keep jumping all the time from 2021 to 2022 and vice versa, can they stay in one year, please?
City for sure. And Modular Buildings.
We really need new themes. It's too bad Vidiyo didn't land, it was colorful and would have brought a lot of new stuff on the table. I can't wait to see what new themes we get, I'm quite sick of licensed stuff overall.
Had to go for Icons, simply because of the amazing Galaxy Explorer
technic

The theme follows a group of five mini-dolls, driving supercars into battle against characters from Chinese folklore, with occasional assistance from the Rebel Alliance in certain sets. Also, there is a Modular Building...
I didn't buy Paradisa in its day because, of course, it was for girls! But it's definitely FRIENDS who won my heart this year with an exceptionally great lineup!
Most of what I bought this year falls under Icons, so that gets my vote.
Speed Champions was already a good value for money line and with the addition of 'movie' cars it's become even more interesting.
Ninjago because the only two sets I've bought from this year are from Ninjago.
I'm not sure it's fair to consider Icons a theme like the rest. It's so diverse that people can like one out of dozens of different models and ONLY that model and still vote for it. It's a collection of individual show-stopper things by definition, so putting it next to actually coherently themed stuff seems to make things skewed.
City had a great space subtheme, some nice market stuff too, and assorted sets like the crane, and Missions, and some fun Stuntz, and trains, and... basically a lot of fun things beyond the usual cops and fire.
Still expensive unfortunately.
Tough call but Ideas absolutely killed it. Mostly because of Starry Night
Without a doubt: Ninjago ... again. The core temple and ultra combimech were stunning! And the latest season 'Crystalized' was the absolute highlight. Great colour use, great vehicles and amazing minifigs, especially the old villains showing up again as generals. Superbe finale!
Star Wars was thé let down of 2022. Bring back more movie sets in 2023!! (40 years of Return of the jedi, right?)
Avatar. Nice colourful sets, nice packaging (take note 18+ sets), nice designs.
@Gataka:
Well, you know, of all the themes, City has the highest licensing tax of all…
Hot take: but Avatar this year was beautiful. I got the banshee flight for Christmas, and it might be one of the most beautiful sets I have on display!
Friends might be a close second. They really upped their game this year. Star Wars has also been a slight improvement overall, after a fairly lacklustre 2021.
Icons, because of the 10497 Galaxy Explorer
Having 10297: Boutique Hotel, 10305: Lion Knights' Castle, 10497: Galaxy Explorer, 40567: Forest Hideout, 76989: Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck Icons win easily :P

My thoughts exactly. That tiger, this year. Wow!
And kudos to its designer for the NPU of a pink flower as an anus. LOL
While my personal favourite themes are Harry Potter and Star Wars, I voted for Friends - Friends is IMHO what City should or used to be. Excellent sets, great variety, (my) kids love them!
I vote for whatever theme 10497 Galaxy Explorer belongs to. More of that please.

Exactly my line of thinking, not to forget 10300: Back to the Future Time Machine and 10302: Optimus Prime.
Icons for the win.
Super Mario! And the Muppets cmf were my favorite lego things this year
The results are heavily skewed as both the Galaxy Explorer and the Lion Castle (2 of the 3 top-rated 2022 sets) belong to Icons. Most of the people put their vote on Icons because of these two. On the other hand, Friends for example, which had a stellar 2022 is currently ranked on the 9th place. I am not sure what kind of meaningful conclusion do you wanted to draw from this vote, but it will be very hard with the current set-up.
Star Wars.
It will always be Star Wars.
Monkie Kid again, this year. But Ninjago and Icons are very close seconds.
As many have commented, while it feels unfair, I have to give it to Icons. Most of the sets I bought this year were from that theme, despite that all of them are wildly different (Modular, 90th anniversary space, Optimus prime, winter village, etc.), and they were all fantastic.
Not to be a downer, but this was the first year I really stepped back and felt a little sad looking at the theme list. While I would never deny that licenses and real world items and locations can make for some fun products, I really just miss the charm of the Lego original IP's. When you exclude general themes like "classic" that are just bricks and such, you're only left with about 5 original IP's by my count. (I'm thinking City, Friends, Monkie Kid, Ninjago, and Creator), with icons and ideas varying.
1. Ideas: Starry Night, Lighthouse, Jazz Quartet, Globe.
2. Icons: Lion Knights Castle, Galaxy Explorer, Orchid.
3. Creator: Majestic Tiger, Viking Ship, Dolphin and Turtle.
Let's hope next year will see more new themes or at least less derivative stuff. One new theme for 2022 is kind of pathetic, despite the numerous one-offs we've had. And hopefully we'll see a revival in different original themes too!
Monkie Kid! I have ten of the eleven sets, with 80035 Galactic Explorer, 80032 Chang'e Moon Cake Factory, and 80037 Dragon of the East being my favorites.
Icons is absolutely great with tons of amazing models. But I put my vote on SpeedChampions, their models are great too but the sets are more affordable which makes the theme as a single entity better in my eyes.
Classic. Lego in its purest form
Globe and Starry Night puts Ideas out front for me.
Vidiyo!

There is really no way to gather a wholly unbiased sample to ascertain the most popular theme of the year. Most people are going to enjoy certain themes more than others and will be inclined to choose those. Using myself as an example, I have no significant interest in Minecraft, so would never choose Minecraft as my favourite theme of the year, no matter how good it was.
Ultimately, this is only intended to be a fun poll. Considering the user base on Brickset, I would usually expect to find Icons, Ideas and Star Wars near the top. Seeing which other themes perform the best is perhaps more interesting, along with which of the typical top three comes out on top.
SPEED CHAMPIONS.
Best value for money, hands-down.
I bought every set released this year, which is the first time that's happened with me and Lego since the first WILD WEST wave, and I'm not joking.
Every set is a miniature Creator Expert build full of unique construction, odd and useful pieces, and every final display model is attractive and fun. Some cars reflect their source material better than others, but every one is a joy to build and collect.
And, I mean, come on. This year SC gave us
- Mini DB5 WITH Bond Minifig
- Mercedes F1 car with "Lewis" minifig
- COUNTACH! COUNTACH! COUNTAAAAACH!!!!
- Ferrari 512 M, one of the most famous cars ever built
- And lastly, a set about FAMBLY
Don't worry, Dom, Brian will be joining us very soon...
@ToaMatoro:
Even Monkie Kid is derived from an ancient work of fiction that’s in public domain. They may be able to claim trademark status on a few characters, like the titular one, but probably not any that are straight from the original text. Certainly not the actual Monkey King.
I describe myself as a Technic guy and I collect the Harry Potter Line for still unknown reasons really but this year my vote will go elsewhere (42145 is good and I'm glad they finally did a better helicopter - now they need to fix the back rotor and give us the parts to do any rotor configuration possible (2,3,4,(we got 5),6).
I am hesitating between City and Icons. Icons, of course for 10497 and 76989 (also 10305 but I don't own it) but I think City is a strong contender for: veal, lamb, piglet, squirrel, new cat, rabbit. City also offered grocery store and school for the very first time (the sets were very expensive for what you got but City sets are always expensive somehow).
I must admit, the Creator line 3-in-1 was/is also very strong and truly represent the Lego experience but I do not own much of it so I guess my vote will go where my money went: Icons. (although I did buy most of the City sets with animal in them).

I see lego are making the same mistake DC did and rushing their LSU (lego set universe) out without nearly enough build-up. I mean, come on lego! either your so upset with DC you wont make sets for them or your stealing marketing strategies from them, pick a lane! On top of that, the prices are just outrageous! To be fair, they probably need the money to pay Disney and all those supercar brands for the star wars and car licences.

Exactly.
From the sets I bought for myself it'll be Icons for sure, but I've gifted my daughter a few Friends sets this year and those are very good as well, much better then the City line has been in the last few years.
Icons is clearly the standout, along with perenial favorites SW and Friends and maybe City.
However, its a rigged question, based on the primary audience on this site (AFOLs). I really doubt anyone will choose Duplo or Minecraft or DOTS... but there are kids out there who would.
OK... maybe not DOTS...
Harry Potter this year was truly outstanding! Loved the 4 Grimmauld Place and the Ministry of Magic sets; and the Hogwarts ones, even if not great in terms of building experience, had excellent minifigures.
Friends is strong for sure! Icons is cool but too many pricey overpriced sets… Agree that is rigged to icons and star wars and whatnot but that’s just the main audience of this site.
It is a shame that Lego makes it so hard for Monkie Kid to achieve success... People are missing a fantastic theme, no way it should be behind Star Wars. 2022 was one of the worst years for SW, and I'm a big fan of the theme. Bad pricing, little variety, some bad designs...
2022 was also a terrible year for Marvel Super Heroes, after a pretty strong 2021. Two absolutely lame massive sets, ridiculous prices and uninspired designs.
Now the Top 5 for me:
1st - Monkie Kid: Beautiful theme. I'm so thankful I found a way to buy the sets easily, now I have a proper collection of MK sets. Gets better every year. Too bad it is almost "boycotted" by Lego themselves, since the sets are hard to find (in Brazil it is not even sold officially, the TV series never got a dub), little advertising... I still hope to see things change and that it gets a proper global treatment in 2023.
2nd - Icons: So many fantastic sets, in special the 90th Anniversary sets. 10497 was the first set I willingly purchased more than once, thanks to its alternate builds and amazing price. 10305 still in my dreams, the BTTF Delorean as well... And others more haha.
3rd - Ninjago: Core had some amazing sets like 71765 and 71767. Crystalized continued this and with a great ending season for the current Ninjago series. Wishing we get a new Ninjago City modular in 2023...
4th - Speed Champions: Another theme that gets better every year. The cars are packed with so many interesting techniques and parts. And now we have movie cars as well! Prices have risen unfortunatelly, but the sets still are a great deal. Lego needs to release two waves of SC sets every year instead of only one.
5th - Creator: Perhaps the most regular theme, bringing great sets every year. Got few sets from the theme this year, but I can't deny the ones I didn't got look excellent. 31332 is a dream.
Went a bit crazy with speed champs, getting all of the 8 wide this year, so that was my vote. But friends should be my vote for the outstanding display, play and build value for any Lego parent or friend.

How about running a second poll after this one with Icons removed and see what people would choose as their second favourite so to speak?
For me, it was a close race between Icons (10+/20 great sets) and Ideas (7/9 great sets). I went with Icons. Creator, Harry and Friends also had strong years.

Hi, IP lawyer here. You're kind of mixing trademark and copyright concepts here. LEGO does in fact hold the registered MONKIE KID trademark in various categories, but the more relevant thing here is copyright. Copyright protects creative expression rather than ideas, so you can take public domain stories and characters, reinterpret them, and copyright your version. This is basically what Disney built its empire on -- reinterpreting public domain stories like Snow White and Cinderella, and then copyrighting those new interpretations and characters. LEGO can do the same with Monkey King and its interpretation of the Journey to the West story, as long as they add some new creative element or spin (which is a very low bar that is very easy to clear). Likewise, every movie, TV, or video game version of Journey to the West (I highly recommend the Xbox 360 game Enslaved to anyone who hasn't played it) is itself separately copyrighted. None of these creators (or adapters) owns the ideas or archetypes inherent to the story, but each one owns its own expression of those ideas. Where things get interesting -- at least to someone like me who gets paid to think about these things every day -- is when one adaptation claims that another is infringing its copyright. I dealt with one case like that a few years ago and it can definitely get messy.
I'm not a Friends collector but Friends smothered all other themes this year. Those sets were outstanding. I'd be willing to bet more 40 yo Muppet lovers bought the Theatre School than the intended demographic.
@HUW: Is it possible to set up a ranking poll where people could select their top 3 or 5 in order? My top 5 for this year would be:
1. Friends
2. Icons
3. Speed Champions
4. Monkie Kid
5. Creator
I love a lot of Ideas and Icons but man, the Speed Champions team is absolutely crushing it. 100% got my vote.
Icons FTW!
I voted for a theme I don't think I bought a single set of (or maybe just a polybag or so as gift): Friends. I'm very much not the target audience for that theme, but I honestly think Friends had an outstanding year with so many stellar sets. And most at a pretty decent price too. I could only wish other themes were consistently on this level. And hey, it's my niece's birthday in a few weeks so I might actually make use of it...
Looking at what I actually bought Icons comes out on top. Not really a surprise, as I am very much the target audience for that. But while I think Lego generally did a decent job, there are some issues that bother me, both regarding quality and pricing.
As for other themes, I think most had their highs and lows. I'd say Technic in particular is very inconsistent, and Ideas also had its share of issues. On the other hand, Creator was mostly good (as usual), and both Speed Champions and Monkie Kid also did pretty well. And I bought 50% of all Architecture sets released this year, and I do actually like that other set ;-)
So if I follow the example of Darth_Dee and also make a top 5:
1) Friends
2) Icons
3) Creator
4) Speed Champions
5) Monkie Kid
I found this a tough year but in the end I voted for the Friends theme.
I love Technic and it's my first line of buying, along with Speed Champions... but having bought lots of the Friends sets for my daughter, the 2022 line has a lot of very impressive builds. My daughter just finished building the Theatre set 41714 today and the detail is outstanding along with the playability. That seems to be key amongst most of the Friends 2022 sets, no longer buildings are like empty shells but have so much to them. Just look at 41702, 41703, 41704, 41708, 41709, 41711, 71413, 41721, 41722.
I do think the 2022 Icons sets are also very impressive but I haven't built enough to know if, as a theme, it compares to the Friends sets. I liked Ideas too.
Technic has a few really good sets, but not collectively enough to beat Friends or Icons. Speed Champions the same.
I'm very reluctant to choose a theme based on one sole set, I can't see a single set being the reason why a whole theme is better than another. My favourite set of the year The Starry Night 21333 doesn't alone make me pick Ideas.
If getting to pick the top 5 then:
1. Friends
2. Icons
3. Technic
4. Ideas
5. Speed Champions
Ive got most of Friends sets. Both Creator and Friends are 2 most solid Lego themes.
My top 5 in no particular order would be Monkie Kid, Friends, Speed Champions, Ninjago, and Creator. Star Wars might have landed if there weren't awful pricing decisions, and painful stock problems.
Speed Champions. Icons has impressive sets, don't get me wrong, and Technic had a pretty good year, but the Speed Champions packs a lot of building fun in a fairly small package.
I just hope we're done with Fast and Furious for now...
It's been a lot of fun to get into Lego Minecraft over the last year. I now have a fantastic shelf packed full of Lego Minecraft sets (which I enjoy more than when I had a city and it's a LOT cheaper too!). I enjoy it being a theme that's just what the set is and all the parts are useful if you don't like the main build. I enjoyed that with creator in the past, but I for some reason haven't been as interested in that over the last couple of years.
My biggest wish for Lego Minecraft in the future is to get maybe a CMF line or a set like 60134, Just a way to get many Minecraft style figures in it to mix and match for my over all set up.
If you vote for DC you’re a liar
Monkie kid hands down is my number one with Ninjago not far behind. The City of Lanterns and Moon Cake Factory were my all time favorites of the year. Such a joy to build and I loved the wacky/fun designs across the theme.
City gets my vote. The summer wave in particular was really strong, and I love the inclusion of squirrels!
Speed Champions: due to consistent quality of all sets, and their favourable price point. As much as I enjoyed some of Icons, price points (and the size of sets, whether for display or storage) are getting ridiculous.
DC has this one in the bag!
Hands down Monkie Kid. Fantastic sets & builds, awesome minifigs. Cool story behind it. It’s a shame it gets so little attention here in the States.
It also bothers me more than it should that I can’t buy these anywhere than online though.
@Feroz said:
"Most of what I bought this year falls under Icons, so that gets my vote.
Speed Champions was already a good value for money line and with the addition of 'movie' cars it's become even more interesting."
This is exactly what I was going to say. If you go by what I purchased, it's Icons. But I have to give it to Speed Champions. That line really took me by surprise this year and hooked me in and now I've suddenly got several, with more likely in the future. Amazing build techniques in those.
Also want to give a nod to Monkie Kid which sets itself apart from what we've seen in the past.
There is something I don't understand with the Friends line. Why does it have to be garish? I always thought that women were the one with colour sense. The sets are great but they have too much colours and too much is just as bad if not worse than not enough.
Let's have a look:
41714: Purple seat should be brown - if you must be colourful then red.
41702: Blue railings should be brown (white might also work if you need something very bright)
41703: Purple railing and purple slide should be brown-ish (if you need heavy colouring: slide could be yellow or green)
41704: Fine as it is. Colour heavy but somehow it works.
41708: Considering what it is: ok like that (this set could have been extremely popular if they had made the glass panels transparent yellow {for space fans} - they are transparent fluorescent green)
41709: Ok but borderline garish: again the purple/orange top wall is borderline too much
41711: Fine as it is. One of the finest Friends set IMO.
41721: Purple doors and violet tractor - two big no-nos
41722: too many colours. Again purple is to blame here. Often times coral/salmon colour is also to blame in Friends sets. Aside from flowers/some fruits, clothing and lipsticks, not much is purple in life (I think).
Basically, de-purplelarize the sets and they become mostly perfect (and better value than City).
Fortunately, there are only a few parts to change to get something not overbearing; so the adaptation is quite easy to do. My opinions of course - I'm sure many will disagree...
Evidently I’m in the minority here, but for me it’s Avatar, by far. Fantastic sets with unique and colorful molds, scenery, and display stands!
Personally I think Speed Champions and Icons had great years and deserve to be up the top of the list.
But having a young daughter who received numerous friends sets throughout the year, they were exceptional. Being all designed from the imagination and creativity of the Lego design team rather than a lego-fied real thing makes them all the more impressive to me. Fun builds with interesting techniques, a wider variety of subjects than even city, some buildings that suit a city better than the city sets and numerous play features, storylines and cool parts make them a stand out to me.
Add in that they are easily obtainable from normal stores and are often on sale, means you don't have to break the bank for one set like many of the icons.
I selected star wars (of course) but my all time favourite Lego theme has been and will always be Mixels! They were affordable, came with a great variety of parts and colours and were meant for combining in your own unique ways! My parts collection is filled with ball joints and Mixel eyes!
The fact that only one new Lego theme has appeared this year is shocking for me. However, with Ninjago slowly coming to an end and what I'm assuming Monkie kid's having his last year in 2023, we may have some new Lego original themes soon...
- Galaxy Explorer
- XL-15
Monkie Kid is a fantastic theme. I've gone out of my way to collect every set in the collection - it just feels like they put a lot more thought and creativity into these sets, even the side builds are gems.
Speed Champions also just continues to crush it and overall provide great value. The switch to 8-wide was a gamechanger. The cars actually look realistic now, and the building processes for these sets are fantastic, lots of clever techniques that you don't expect for a $20 build. And there's definitely been an increased focus on interiors and more printed parts.
I also appreciate the direction City is going into more than just police/fire. Some great additions this year like the hospital, school and grocery store. And the summer 2023 set name leaks for City...wow! It's going to be epic.
I voted for icons.
Technic is not very high on the list anymore, I liked technic way better in the days when there was way more "regular" Lego in it, like up to about the year 2000.
I picked city because of the great farm sets. love them
Friends as a theme was the clear winner to me, even though I bought a lot of Icons sets. My second favorite *theme* was Avatar and third favorite was Speed Champions. Minecraft and Harry Potter would round out my top five.
What's with this vocal minority of Friends fans in the comments?
@illennium:
I know that characters can be protected under both copyright and trademark because Disney has seeded Steamboat Willie and Sorcerer’s Apprentice depictions of Mickey Mouse in logos with the express intent of shielding them under trademark status even when their copyright finally peters out. Monkie Kid himself is, I believe, supposed to be the head depicted in the logo, so that should confer trademark status, yes?
That said, I did get it mixed up, and I probably wasn’t as clear as I intended. Monkie Kid is an original character, where much of the cast is drawn from the original text. Nobody can use the Monkie Kid character in any capacity without licensing the rights, but tons of adaptations feature variations on the likes of Pigsy. Into the Badlands cast Nick Frost as Bajie, who very obviously represents Zhu Bajie, the same character that Pigsy is based on. Zhu Bajie is public domain, so anyone can adapt the character.
Looking through the Wikipedia page, Mei and Mo are probably original, along with many of the lower level villains and inconsequential background characters. Monkey King, Pigsy, Sandy, Tang, and all of the high level villains are drawn from the book.
Anyways, I do remember thinking that someone was going to draw Disney’s wrath when I saw how they dressed Snow White on the series Once…until I remembered it was on ABC, which was owned by Disney, and they had access to all of the Disney depictions of these classic fairytale characters.
@BulbaNerd4000:
Nope. The question asks what our favorite theme is, not which one we thought did the best job. Until they do a Darkwing Duck theme, my will always be DC. Make Mine BATMAN!
Ideas and Icons were strongest for me this year. I give the edge to Ideas though because I love the Lighthouse and Starry Night.
Blacktron is my favorite theme.
Would've voted for DC Superheroes, but all they (TLG) put out was 'The Batman', and...no...just no (TLG: Again; you NEED to expand this line...)
'City' got my vote as: I got the Ice Cream Truck (anytime the 'cone' is also a 'cannon', I'm on board:)), but also the polybags. Got two of the 'Scarecrow', and just got two of the 'Go-Cart', so pretty good in drawing interest...

I highly doubt Monkie Kid will end anytime soon. It is their theme for thw Chinese market. And Ninjago is only ending in its current form. It will get a sort of reboot next year with new characters and all.
I selected Icons without hesitation, so Im still convinced its the best, but now that I think of it, Speed Champions is the theme that really deserves the win. Beautiful, iconic cars with unmatched building techniques and parts usage. So yeah, Icons is still the best, but Speed Champions easily deserves second.
@brick_r:
They also did 76220, and, like, half a dozen of those foil packs that I'm sure aren't even available on this side of the pond.
My favorite theme are Technic. Since 1984.
My First Technic set was 8851.
Overwatch 2
Oh wait, they didn’t release that set, phew.
There was only one truly awesome set for me this year, and that was 10497.
Icons it therefore is for me.
Runner up I guess would be Speed Champions.
In the past Technic would have been battling Creator Expert (mainly because of the Modulars) for number one with me, but since the last Technic set that held any interest to me 42128 and the last few Modulars also didn't excite me as much as past ones, those two themes have lost momentum for me.
Icons seems to be capturing the classic feel of Lego, along with some ideas sets. But overall I think Icons is the winner for amazing sets like the Lion Knights Castle, Forestman hideout, and Galaxy Explorer.

We've noticed... ;-)
@PurpleDave: Yeah, but...to the 'General Populous' (read: "The Normies"), that's just 'more Batman'...and they're not wrong...
Imagine 'the flip' of this: If TLG advertised Lego Marvel Superheroes; and then...only put out Spider-Man. No Iron Man, nor Thor, and not a Hulk; unless they were 'worked' into sets with Spidey...
To make matters 'worse', there's a 'leaked' DC set for next year for 'The Flash'...no NOT that Flash, unfortunately. But that not the important part, it set in a certain (90's ish) caped-crusader's lair...
And to make matters 'ridiculous', there's a "strong rumor" that Marvel's getting another CMF series in September...where's DC's...
@brick_r:
You say that like “more Batman” is a bad thing.
Okay, yes, it would be awesome if they made a set based on the 1990 Flash series, but viewership on that dropped down to a series low of only 8.4 million, so I don’t know if there’s enough of a fan base there. I mean, maybe if the set had launched right at the start, when they were pulling in over 20 million viewers at a time. But they’re still planning to do a set based on the film after Miller seems to have been trying everything he can think of to get run out of town on a rail? If they weren’t hanging it on Keaton’s Batman, that might sell as poorly as a set based on the current series.
