Harry Potter coming to DOTS!

Posted by ,

Alongside numerous new set images, the 2023 LEGO Catalogue reveals that Harry Potter will soon be coming to the DOTS theme!

No images of the actual products are currently available, but I anticipate some interesting printed elements, presumably similar to those produced in collaboration with Disney.

Which other themes would you like to intersect with DOTS? Let us know in the comments.

Speed Champions could provide some interesting car manufacturer-based accessories like keyrings or something

Seems like a sensible collaboration as both themes are aimed predominately at children.

Can we all agree to call these Harry Dotter sets?

Harry Potter and Dots? Sounds to me like there trying to attract a new Dot crowd.

By in Belgium,

It would be nice to have some Star Wars Dots tiles, but I think it is as likely as Duplo Star Wars…

If TLG could stop putting Potter guff in every other theme for five minutes that’d be absolutely grand cheers, of all the licenses it had to be *this* one huh.

I would love to have Star Wars Minifigures Collection wave or two.

I know this is the second license to infect dots, but it just hurts seeing unlicensed themes die out one by one. There's a balance to be struck.

I dont understand how is this not a thing yet

Dots is like a Lego “fidget spinner”. That’s not a negative, it’s just how I see them.

How about some more variety of Dots letters and numbers so I can purist mod the 10497 alt builds with some '2's and 'B's.

Why all the anger? These seem like a great mix.

The fact that the creator of Harry Potter has devoted the past few years of her life to anti-LGBT bigotry, for starters.

I like Dots and would even be down for more tie-ins with other themes... just not this one."

exactly my issue. i understand why they’re keeping the hp theme going because it’s still profitable, but also i could do without the intellectual property of a person who thinks who i am is disgusting creeping into a theme i otherwise draw so much joy from.

What does a person opinion have to doo with her fictional creation? You can love HP and hate the creator at same time.

We get licensed Technic sets alongside non-licensed ones every single year and no one cries for the sanctity of the theme. Integrating licenses where it makes sense is historically the Lego way. It's fine.

rowling has made the claim that anyone supporting her merchandise or product is endorsing her views. i want no part in that and refuse to humour her.

you wouldn’t be asking this question if you were one of the people affected by it.

So is it my understanding that Dots is selling decently? I mean, I have purchased a few sets, but I am always curious.

That is a claim of 1 person, that is lonely, angry, unhappy, stupid... whatever reason that made her say that. If I buy a HP merch and know that I don't support her opinion, it's fine by me, and no-one can tell me what I do, fell or think at that moment. Agreeing with her claim is just being as stupid as her. And I don't mean You particularly. I did't like her personality way before all the twitter story, but I still remain a bid HP fan. Hope you will find peace with yourself and won't let others opinion affect you life. Happy New Year!

Okay, legitimate question, who is Neo Lego Harry Potter for? If we have analytics on their sales I would be very curious, as I find it hard to believe that Gen Alpha kids are interested in Harry Potter on their own without existing family history, especially with the state of its sequel series. It's not the same evergreen franchise that Star Wars is that continuously has new entry points for new generations. Of course, to state the obvious, the license is... *divisive* among adults, to put it kindly. I know there's a sizable chunk of millennials that will buy merch without realizing what they're financially supporting (or not caring and judging that their nostalgia comes first) but given the re-evaluation of the franchise in the public eye over the past few years in light of the auteur's tirade against a minority group I genuinely think that the license is a far more controversial one than when the franchise first entered the public consciousness. Where is the majority of the support coming from?

Some people are just incapable of separating the two. Too bad, its their loss if they want to hate HP just because its creator has some messed up ideas. And if you dont like the idea of giving JK your money, thats fair, but its not like all of a sudden she doesnt deserve it. She still wrote HP and just because you dont agree with her opinion (I dont either) dosent mean she should stop getting money from it. Just my opinion.

I was going to guess "no". After Christmas, the LEGO inventory at most stores I checked has been destroyed with just a scattering of sets left. Except DOTS... comparatively plenty of those at every store I have checked.

I like both HP and Dots so I'm quite interested to see what they have come up with. I enjoyed the HP-Art crossover too.

Gravatar
By in United States,

gross

the Extra DOTS bags were cute sources of little detail tiles, but I certainly be thinking twice before I pick up any more packs if they're going to push such a bigoted license into the line.

As another commenter said, kids today are still interested in the books and movies. I have an 11-year-old and he said that a lot of kids in his class have read the books. My older two kids didn't read the books (they are teens now) but I'm reading them with my 6th grader. (He has dyslexia, so he doesn't enjoy reading independently.) I was too old to read them myself as a child, so there's no "family history" of reading them.

My thought is that kids and teachers and parents look for books that are established series. That way if your child enjoys book 1, then there are however many more for the child to then continue with. Harry Potter fits this and also has the bonus of the movies and merchandise.

The Dots theme started out as a bit too pink and jewelry-focused for my son to be interested. I did buy him the panda tag for his bag. I also looked at the panda box recently but ended up buying a $30 Harry Potter set instead. I am interested to see if the HP Dots theme will appeal to him.

Fair enough, and it's not like anyone here could (or should) judge kids for liking what they like; they don't know people's hangups with the author and debates of ethical consumption in instances like this. Those decisions should be made by them when they grow up and are mature enough to understand the gravity of the unfortunate ways JKR uses her platform.

Ethically, it's still disappointing that Lego continues to use the HP license in light of the situation. That said, thanks for sharing your personal experience to answer my question.

By in United States,

I just want LEGO Minecraft DOTS sets.

I have no clue what that would look like in the slightest but I am doing my gosh darn best to get us past the sociopolitical flame war that erupts every time this theme gets brought up.

But how funny would that be to see entirely circular sets based on a game that's entirely blocks! It's an idea so almost nonsensical yet so vastly creative that it's just screaming potential. Then I could put my love for Allays on my wall for all to see.

If nothing else, nobody has denied Rowling sucks yet, just offered differing takes on whether consumption of her products is ethical, or showing interest in the line without bringing up her impact. For those who couldn’t tell by my previous comment, I want Rowling out of my life, too, I’m just unsure as to whether set purchases are actually supporting her or mostly just Warner Bros.

Anyway, enough controversy.... When are the Rolf Harris Dots sets released?

Gravatar
By in United States,

It would be great to get some different fonts for letters and numbers, as well as lowercase letters too. I think adding HP to the dots is great, Disney dots were nice.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Since when is HP a kids only theme, get real. I hope the prints are not too cartoony for the HP line. Disney's were pretty good, as were the Levi's a few years back.
