4x4 Off-Road Ambulance Rescue availability confirmed
Posted by CapnRex101,
After appearing on LEGO.com, 40582 4x4 Off-Road Ambulance Rescue has been confirmed to be a new gift-with-purchase.
The 162-piece set will be available with LEGO City purchases exceeding £95, $95 or €95, beginning on the 10th of February. This also coincides with the start of double VIP points.
Do you have any City purchases planned, or would you have bought this set as a standard retail product? Let us know in the comments.

Meh.
We really need a Bingo card for typical Brickset comments.
[ ] GWPs are evil.
[ ] I don't know who this set is for, but it's not me so I hate it.
[ ] You can just buy it on the aftermarket.
only in City sets?? Ugg... ah well, I don't have city sets to buy that cover that threshold. I would have bought it as a set.
I kind of like where they’re going with this and the 3in1 Witch from a few months back. These are certainly a better alternative to highly desirable one-off figures or exclusive theme tributes; they’re not special enough to guarantee scalping and ridiculous aftermarket prices but they do offer just something extra when you buy a little more. That, in my opinion, is what GWPs should be.
Now rerelease the Blacktron Cruiser and Forestmens hideout as buyable sets pls
I was waiting to see if the latest train station would get discounted somewhere but maybe now is a good a time as any? Who needs to eat anyway.
I don't know if it will be the same elsewhere, but for France, Lego has changed the conditions and confirmed that it will be for 100€ of purchase, but WITHOUT RANGE RESTRICTIONS !!!
Very good news ! ;-)
I wonder how many of these GWP sets were meant to be sold separately but are now behind these ridiculous paywalls.
another gwp ?! and such a strange one too it looks like a regular set ! very strange choice making on legos side. not the first too lol
If it had been a regular ambulance it would be great. An off-road ambulance seems like complete nonsense and certainly no use in a town or city.
Doesn’t interest me, and if there were any City sets I had any interest in, I would have used them to qualify for another Mixel Tahu.

Why is it nonsense? Not everybody gets injured on a perfectly flat city street.
Seriously, I used to volunteer on an ambulance. A conventional urban ambulance wouldn't be able to handle traveling off-road. (Also, Cities can have terrain environments. Towns that are next to woods and mountains are even more apt to have them. I'm in a fairly urban area on the East Coast of the United States, and trust me, there's plenty of parks and forests within a short drive where this kind of ambulance would be useful.)

Is that like Sad Tahu's brother or something?

I feel the opposite, in some respects. Ideally, sets like 40580 Blacktron Cruiser would be available to buy like any other, but they are specialised and I can understand why LEGO would be hesitant to distribute them widely. Of course, they could be limited to LEGO.com and LEGO stores, although the company has rarely used that distribution model. Rightly or wrongly, I presume LEGO doubts whether smaller sets celebrating past themes would perform well.
More conventional sets, on the other hand, seem like odd choices for gifts-with-purchase. Promotions give LEGO the opportunity to develop products they otherwise might not, like those celebrating past themes or 40531 Lars Family Homestead Kitchen, but 40562 Mystic Witch or 40582 4x4 Off-Road Ambulance Rescue could easily be standard sets.
Available with Lego Bionicle purchases over £95.
Personally, I prefer GWP like this. They complement the existing themes and give you something mildly exclusive. If it were a licensed theme, the secondary market would drive the price to an insane level, but I believe GWP like this tend to be fairly attainable without a large markup.

The rescue squad used to own a pair of 4x4 E-350 Type IIs that, due to not being produced anymore (as they were produced before Ford discontinued factory 4x4 on the E-Series), were used until they had completely worn out. Most ambulances around here are 4x4 for this very reason.
One of the other squads owns a specially outfitted Polaris Ranger that can carry a Stokes Basket for use off-road. Due to the ATV trails around here, a lot of other squads have acquired their own.
If it had been a return theme like Res-Q then absolutely. As it is... I like the red jacket minifigure, tree, and bike...
I think we'd all like to hold off for a bit to build income for the Rivendell set, but if you're buying its nice to get something.
Clearly this is something.
The good news with this set is the return of the black walkie-talkie. I was not too fond of the light bley one.
I will most likely end up having this set as I will place an order to take advantage of double VIP points and it will meet the threshold for this. For historical reason, I think I would have preferred the 'mixel'* Tahu but that's the way it is I guess - I will not bend over backward buying stuff I don't need/want to get a GWP (unless it is Space related (Classic or real - the regular stuff they release has little to no appeal to me even if its fairly decent this year)).

Well. It's not a bad threshold, and I do like that it makes sense as a GWP (City to go with a City set). I do like the look of it, so maybe with double VIP points it'll give me a reason to go to the store this month

I hope this will be the case in The Netherlands... Waiting to buy the LOTR brickheads and some other stuff, getting a GWP always makes me happy!
It's fine, it's something someone might impulse buy off the shelf for my 2nd grader for his birthday and he would like it. But as a gwp it makes little to no sense to me.... not unique enough to drive a purchase imo.

I think this set makes more sense as animal rescue vehicle (both small wildlife and cats and dogs are in many City sets now), by swapping the panels from set 60382 : Vet Van Rescue onto it, as it uses the same 1x4x2 panel pieces.
And while the 2021 African wildlife rescue subtheme retired , 60353 from 2022 is still available for some nice wildlife Vet figures, accesoires and a printed rescue car hood/roof

It's a fun set, but l can't think of $95 worth of City sets l'd want
Love the design, and the $95 threshold is nice. While this should be a normal set, it’s not especially desirable to me, so I don’t feel like I’m missing out. That’s how GWPs should be, not highly desirable with high spend thresholds like they have been lately.
Needed the double VIP to match with next GWP, not this.
@ResIpsaLoquitur:
There’s probably a few people who have been injured on Lombard Street in San Francisco. They should do a rappelling ambulance next, so they can save those people.
@Binary_Code:
Sad Tahu is the little model you can build with 11021. Mixel Tahu is 40581.
@MisterBrickster:
So only one set qualifies for this, but you have to buy two copies?
Right!!
Have zero intention to buy City sets directly from LEGO since they are so vastly overpriced nowadays.
If this set will be available on the aftermarket for around 20 Euro delivered I might consider buying it there. If not, also not the end of the world.
Would have bought this for my youngest child no question. A real shame it's tied into having to drop that much $$$ directly with LEGO. I'll look for it 2nd hand at this point.
As for the set itself I like it. Neat subject matter and cool minifigures and vehicle.
Lego needs to retire that awful neon color.

Can you develop a little bit more on this please. I am not aware of what is going on on Feb 21st (with Lego removing the calendar and all). I might delay my purchase a bit if it is a better GWP. I usually try to spend only on double VIP and very good GWP (this current GWP is not good to me at all but double VIP is always interesting). If there is a better GWP coming I might even forego double VIP. As almost everyone I have a limited budget and I try to limit myself to a maximum of one order per month if that - so I must be very selective on the GWP I eventually get.

As a mountain biker, I'm very glad there are ambulances that are more capable, than your run of the mill ambulance. They don't quite look as burly as this one, but there certainly is a use!
A city GWP worth €15-20 coming with +€95 of city purchases.
Not the greatest discount and no city sets on sale, but at least this GWP requirement make perfect sense.
No interest myself, I only need a few otter packs.
Being honest, I'm getting increasingly miffed at the theme-specific promos. Currently looking at dropping $180 on the A-Frame Cabin, why can't that be eligible? Is it simply a method of driving purchases from certain themes?

I’m not sure what would happen. Possibly the server would collapse into a GWP singularity.
I might hold off until 2/21 for 40586 Moving truck Icon promo that compliments the Jazz Club. It has a higher threshold, but unfortunately it doesn't start until after double vip points end.
Reminds me of 6445! I would totally get this if it was a regular set to purchase, but I just don't collect enough City stuff to pull the trigger on this one. I'll be picking it up on Bricklink once it's available though!

It's an absolute necessity, considering the current amount of potholes in UK roads!

The Moving Truck GWP is expected to run 21 Feb to 2 Mar with a threshold of $180. No restriction on themes has been announced, but then it wasn't for the ambulance either at first.
I believe this information is incorrect, based on what my local LEGO store told me.
Add me to the list of people annoyed that this GWP is theme specific. I've got a decent wishlist of pricey sets that are being excluded from most recent GWP promos resulting in me not ordering anything but PAB direct from Lego. It's not a set I would buy on its own but freebies are nice incentives to get me to pay full price for some sets that are available for less elsewhere.

The new A frame house is up in the mountains. You need an off-road ambulance to get to it.
Damn. If only the Chicken Battle Packs were in stock :(
On the box it looks like the paramedics are rescuing the bike
Hoth Bricks reports that Lego changed their mind and now the GWP will not be restricted by theme.
But I just spent that much last month to get Tahu....
Considering the regular City discounts I hope it will turn up as a more regular GWP. It's neat, just that.
Oh, cool. I had the hospital on my hit list, so this works.
Well, it would ... if the hospital was in stock. Welp. Hope that it's not theme restricted so I can pull the trigger on the A-Frame instead ...
I can only assume the next GWP will be available only with purchase of police sets specifically. And the one after that? Only if you buy at least four copies of 60369.
Mountain biking is my second hobby behind Lego, so naturally I want this set. But $95 threshold, and it has to be City theme at that, ugh, hard pass. Guess I'll wait for reasonable-ish prices on ebay. I'd buy this as a set outright for $20-25.
I like the set. Double points, a City set I like, I have $95 of City sets I want to buy.
I'm in!
Not every GWP has to appeal to every buyer and I really like that Lego mixes things up. A Blacktron Space set, Chinese New Year, Bionicle, City. And it's only mid-February for all that.

Much too rational... I feel sure there must be a Lego rep twisting your arm behind your back, forcing you to buy something you don't actually want.
This is just strange. It would have been a good set, but nope, it's a GWP. Yes, it is a nice addition for kids/parents buying say, a $100 police station or hospital set for example, but I'd be curious to know how many people actually do that. Anyone with a little knowledge/understanding of Lego knows to buy elsewhere (eg BigW, Target, Walmart in the US etc.), unless it's a Lego store exclusive or you want PAB, Build a Minifig etc. Also, here in Australia Lego stores are very hard to get to and there are so few so again the overwhelming majority of customers won't be buying regular sets in a Lego Store. People actually buying stuff are AFOLs with 18+ sets and so forth. Hence, to make a GWP targeted at kids while it is a good idea in principle, in my opinion seems strange given the lack of customers who would even know this exists and want it.
Lego would make so much more profit selling this as a regular set. I'm sure lots of kids would love this (but as I said, as a GWP majority of kids won't even know it exists).
As for GWPs, I think they should be limited to nice little polybags, like a little flower or car that's just a nice little addition you get for free. No exclusive minifigs, no limiting entire Classic themes to some GWP you need to spend like $300 to get and will never get anyway because the Lego store only gets sent 5 (that is literally the number staff told me at my local Lego store).
Why should fans miss out on a set they want, and more to the point, why should Lego ignore profit they could make by selling sets like the Forestman Hideout or Vintage Taxi as regular sets?
Take the new vintage delivery truck. A lovely, lovely set. But you're going to have a number of people who have no interest in it, and thus won't pay extra money to get it, a bunch of people who will end up getting it because they met the threshold but may not have interested in it, and a ton of people like me who would happily buy multiples of the set ($$$ for Lego), but will miss out and thus not spend any extra money to reach the threshold anyway!
So Lego's making free sets (production costs) for people who couldn't give a damn, while missing out on selling to all the people who do want it. (profit) That makes no sense economically, let alone morally.
It's February 10th in the USA now, and the 2x points event has begun, but this set is not an available Gift With Purchase. We're still seeing the Bionicle offer.

Fire up the DeLorean
Good news (as Captain Slow would say): it's now past midnight in New Zealand and 40582 was added when I put 21338 in my shopping cart, so the theme restriction was fortunately lifted off!

You’re going to have to say it louder. I don’t think people heard you.
@Brickchap:
Morally? Last I checked, offering GWPs doesn’t involve the murdering of puppies and kittens, commission of war crimes, or removing the tag from mattresses.
@TheBrickshipyard:
All other issues with what you said aside, the main reason for the shift to large, expensive D2C sets has more to do with the fact that, before the launch of VIP Red started allowing them to collect hard sales data, adults who use their LEGO paychecks to buy LEGO sets for personal consumption were utterly convinced that adults simply didn’t buy LEGO sets for personal consumption. It’s taken nearly two decades since they released 10030 but they’ve finally embraced the idea that there really is a large market for sets aimed at adult collectors. Knowing that, it would be silly to just ignore it. The only people who would really be happy about that are those who don’t buy those sets because they can’t afford them, or those who don’t buy those sets because they object to the idea of large sets with intricate details. Both of those groups can not-buy these sets just as easily when they’re produced as they can when they aren’t.
It's not limited to City, and available from €100 (not €99,99).
@PurpleDave Please actually read my comment instead of nitpicking one word. And by morally I referred to other people who have argued about the negative mental effects of promoting FOMO and deliberately making heaps of people miss out on something. With regular Lego sets, everyone has a more or less fair chance of obtaining them. (especially if they are general release to multiple retailers). But GWPs are only available at Lego Shop, only for a certain amount of time, but more importantly, Lego only gives stores like 3-5 of these. Even if you're standing at the door right on opening hour on day 1 of the GWP, there's a very high probability you'll still miss out.
But my main argument is that is Lego is making free sets (production costs) for people who couldn't give a damn, while missing out on selling to all the people who do want it. (profit). That only creates unhappy customers and is a loss for Lego.

GREAT SCOTT!
@Brickchap:
I did read it. Every word. I have a lot of thoughts on what you wrote, but chose to only comment on the singularly most absurd word I saw in the post. However, circumstances are clearly not the same for you as they are where I live. Our LEGO Stores may be clumped together in some areas, and days apart in others, but the only time I've ever heard of them only getting five of any one promo item, it was a case where qualifying shoppers could pick one of three different free items. One of those, limited I believe to exactly five copies at my local store, was the Iconic Penguin that had not, at that time, had any release in North America (they were probably the first five items to be picked). But they had enough of the other two items to make sure anyone who qualified would still get something. And shipping is less onerous here, because we have a massive population on one landmass, so transportation isn't as big a deal as it is when your "local warehouse" isn't even in the same hemisphere. I'm fully aware that most of the changes that happen to the Australian market objectively sound like they just made things worse.
That said, the purpose of a business is to make money. If you don't do that, you will fail at business. Under the circumstances I'm used to seeing, handing out free product to encourage brand loyalty is not only not immoral, but it's sound business practice. I just didn't realize the LEGO Brand Retail situation was that much worse than I'd already heard about. But that just puts you in a Catch-22. In much of the rest of the world, GWPs are an effective means of drawing customers in, without feeling like a bait-and-switch. And as long as it's no big deal in other parts of the world, Australia is stuck between skipping a promo that absolutely does exist elsewhere, or getting shafted on what promos do make it to your shores. Ridiculous as I feel your use of that word was, Australian AFOLs in general do have my sympathy for how they treat you in these situations.
Ordered the two botanical sets & the Off Road GWP was added so I put the order through. Glad Lego decided not to limit this to just City Theme purchases.
Just got one today with my order. It's orders over $100.00 USD, but not exclusive to CITY products. I bought a book and Standard PAB.
