LEGO's list of the 10 biggest sets omits one
Posted by Huw,
The top ten largest LEGO sets, in terms of number of pieces, has a new entry today, with 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell coming in at number eight.
We recently added a menu item on our browse menu to make it easy to access a query which lists the largest sets and while browsing LEGO.com today I noticed it too has a page listing the top ten as well.
Unfortunately, and rather embarrassingly, LEGO's list has an omission: 75331 The Razor Crest which has 6,187 pieces -- 20 more than Rivendell -- which makes it the 7th largest, is missing. You might expect the company producing these products to maintain better records than the fan community, but clearly that is not the case!
The earliest entry in the list is 75192 Millennium Falcon which was released during 2017. It stole the title of largest set ever from 10189 Taj Mahal and retained it until usurped by 10276 Colosseum in 2020.
All but one of the entries in our list, and LEGO's, are still available.

Still seems like such an odd choice to make such a massive set out of. Could probably sustain like a $250 set but a $600 model of it just makes me go "why?"
but what about the true 2nd largest set, BIGBOX-1?

That's a collection of sets so out of scope.
18th largest set, 2000409 looks weird.
2000409 bleh
When not even Lego’s own publicity team can remember all the super-sized sets that have recently been released, it perhaps indicates that there are a few too many…
Lol. Lego when only the best will do!

Because a $250 Razor Crest would only be slightly larger than the $140 75292. Why bother?
I have the all the sets in the Top 5 and sadly all are still waiting to be built!

I try to ignore anything Lego's marketing people say. For instance, if you go to their Top 10 list, for the Eiffel Tower, the fourth paragraph is "Unless you own The Louvre, or a really big garage, good luck finding a place to put it..." So... you DON'T want me to buy it... okaaaayyy...
In the January 2023 paper catalog, three Ninjago sets have wording that says (slightly different for each set) 'can be displayed in kids' bedrooms between playtimes.'

"My experiences of LEGO,
AKA TLG (since the 90s),
and Fan Sites are -
that the Fans knows best in all categories: history, sets, parts, years - you name it.
I've been annoyed more than once when in contact with TLG, that they call all the phone operators "experts".
Even a kid with interest in LEGO know more about the products than the company's phone "experts"."
This is true for almost all things, not just Lego. Those that have a true passion, and not just a job, will retain and have better knowledge of things. The phone experts are just working a job, and while I’m sure they know a lot, they don’t indulge themselves in all things Lego like we do.
I live in a school bus and have limited space to display my collection. I’d rather see more sets in the $150-$250 range and fewer sets in the $300+ range.
The Ninjago sets are the most exciting and imaginative in this list. The rest feel like dust catchers whose appeal will wane much more quickly. I’d be curious to know how many owners of either of the Taj Mahals still have them on display, and how many are built once and then (dusted and) boxed … and how many have never been built. Actually not just the Tak Mahal. Future Brickset poll?
Nitpick: is there a way to add the rank (e.g this is 11th largest) to the set entry when you click that link. It would be helpful when scrolling through.
Time to flog the interns! :D
This is the same LEGO that told us to put two of the stickers upside-down on 40580.
@Huw:
I thought there was a corporate team-building set that would have made this list, but all I’m coming across is Serious Play. What I remember had a very expensive initial purchase, where Serious Play has a very affordable starter set, and it’s the accessory packs (still sub-3000pcs) that rake you over the coals.
@PurpleDave, The 4,900-piece 2000409 Window Exploration Bag used to be in the top 10 but it's too small to make the grade now.
Of the top 10 I've only succumbed to the Titanic, but Rivendell is a future definite and the Eiffel Tower keeps beckoning menacingly.
While I like large LEGO sets, so far I've avoided the REALLY large ones. My biggest, by piece count, is the Ghostbusters Firehouse (4634 pieces). Looking at the Brickset list, I have 11 sets over 3000 pieces. In the past few months I've built Home Alone and the newer Haunted House...both were awesome builds and display pieces.
I'd love the UCS Falcon, but that's just so much for one set and it takes up so much space, I've not ever strongly considered it. The new LOTR set is great, but no immediate plans to get it.
Fun Fact: I got two random bags from 2000409 in a haul...but alone I guess they just have 49 pieces each. I parted one out and so far have kept the other sealed.
Of the top ten I have 31203, 10276, 75192, 71043, and 10256. All amazing display sets (yes even the world map) As much as I want the titanic and the Eiffel Tower I have decided not to buy them I just don’t want them enough to be willing to pay that much for them.
It would be interesting to know the comparative weights of the top 50 sets.
Suddenly got excited seeing an Adventure Ride as the next in the 'Latest Articles' list. Then saw the date. Sh*t... the wait continues!
Interesting that I own 9/10 in the list but have only built 4 primarily due to lack of space.
@Huw:
I don’t think that’s what I’m remembering. It wasn’t a multi-set system, just one really huge set, and I think it had a 4-figure price tag. Maybe it got split up to form the Serious Play theme, or maybe it was just a bundle of the entire theme.
It's interesting to compare this list to the list of the most expensive sets. 76210 Hulkbuster is the eighth most expensive but is ranked 34th in piece count. 2000430 and 2000431 are ranked 3rd and 4th in price but are ranked 97th and 114th by number of parts.
Is this a joke post that I’m supposed to read in the voice of the nerds from The Simpsons ? Because if so it’s real funny and if not it’s real sad.
Just throwing my opinion in the ring, I think considering 31203 the 'biggest set' is a total joke. Yeah, sure, technically it does have the most pieces in the box - But it's not a traditional LEGO set at all. 11 thousand pieces sounds impressive until you realize the vast majority are dot tiles and the building experience boils down to doing mosaic panels over and over. It's not impressive and certainly doesn't deserve the prestigious title of 'largest LEGO set'.
That’s okay, my list is up to date :)
Remember when you'd get excited to add multiple copies of a set with a good parts assortment to your sorted collection so you could build the design you always imagined but was also too big for retail?
Yeah.
I kinda think the old days were better days.
@Rimefang:
I turned a minifig of the Flash into a 13,000+ piece MOC. I sometimes have him run up buildings that are bigger than me. I don't see the problem.

Somehow 26 people "own" this BIGBOX-1 set. I starting to suspect some people might not be being honest about their collections... https://brickset.com/sets/BIGBOX-1/The-Ultimate-Battle-for-CHIMA

It could be that some people are saying, "Well, since I own everything in this set of sets, I own this set."
Or maybe 26 people accidentally clicked "I own" instead of "I want".

This is why we don't publish the 'top 10 biggest collections' and similar because juvenile delinquents think it's amusing to inflate their collection, or own one of everything , or 100s of the same sets. I regularly go through and delete such collections.

i'm sure plenty of adult delinquents do that too . . . .
@Huw, would it be possible to add the rankings to this search?
I wanted to see where my largest set ranks (the original Death Star) and while I know how to count to 42, it would be really cool if I could just select sets that I own and see their ranking without having to scroll through the whole list and count every set. I have a feeling I’ll be scrolling for a long time before I find my second largest set (the NES).
On a side note, I now know the ultimate question to life the universe and everything. Those mice are gonna be jealous!
