Review: 40588 Flowerpot

Posted by ,

Another gift with purchase that will be offered at LEGO.com during April is 40588 Flowerpot.

It'll be available from the 14th to the 24th April. We've now had it confirmed that the qualifying threshold for this one is $150 / €150 / £130.

Given the success of the botanical collection I suspect it will be well-received, especially by those who are not among LEGO's core demographic.

Summary

40588 Flowerpot, 292 pieces.

An attractive addition to the botanical collection

  • Wonderful colours and textures
  • Fairly reasonable GWP threshold to acquire it
  • The pot looks a bit squat

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Parts are packed in numbered bags, plus another one containing large elements.

The four pieces (65783 SHELL 13M, W/ 3,2 SHAFT, NO. 1) that make up the pot come loose in the box. They were designed for Trolls set 41252 Poppy's Air Balloon Adventure which was released during 2020. It's started to make appearances in sets again this year and is cast in light yellow for the first time here.

The interior of the pot both holds the sides in place and the flowers upright, and it reminded me of Oasis floral foam when I was poking the stems into the holes.

The sides are clipped at the bottom then folded up and attached to the core to form a perfectly circular pot.

The individual flowers are not identified in the instructions, but the two tall ones at the back resemble pussy willow cuttings. The brown plant stem piece is new in this set.

The balance of shapes, textures and colours makes the overall arrangement look wonderful.

I'm not entirely convinced by the pot, though: its curvature is not particularly elegant, so it looks a bit squat and bottom-heavy. LEGO's parts palette is not awash with suitable elements for flowerpots -- yet -- so I guess the designer has had to use what was at hand.

Nevertheless, it's a lovely model and, now we know that the threshold is not as severe as we had originally been led to believe, it's definitely one to save a big spend for to acquire it.

I think it looks delightful.

Will it not be $250 to get it though? Lego is getting greedier with the GWPs each day.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I really want this but refuse to pay that much for it. Should be available to purchase too if you ask me.

Interested to see what it looks like next to the other potted botanicals like the orchid or birds of paradise for scale.

By in United States,

I might put some 2x2 circular tiles on the vase to cover up the exposed studs.

By in Netherlands,

let's hope the threshold is 150 :x

By in Germany,

It looks nice enough and having bought the Trolls balloon set at some point I could even do a pink version of it, but 250 quid for a GWP? That's really quite crazy. One could only hope they'll make it available as a regular in-store exclusive later on...

By in United States,

For those who can keep up with these GWP, more power to you. I’ve tapped out for a while, unless something happens to line up with a future large purchase like Rivendell. They will be pretty infrequent though.

Gravatar
By in France,

I would definitely buy this!

It feels weird to not be able to go to a Lego Store and feel satisfied with what you purchased when spending <$30.

It feels more and more that the attractive sets that could be in that price range are the GWP (with the exception of Speed champion).

By in Netherlands,

Large amount of those plant stems in a useful color for trees and bushes, but this should've been it's own seperate set, I'm sure people would buy this for both purposes of parts pack and display.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's a very cute set. It'd also have made a great, sub-$50 release for the Botanicals line.

Alas, LEGO has paywalled the set. They're free to do as many GWPs as they please but I will pass.

By in United States,

$250? Even the land rover doesn't cover that, what an insane threshold. I absolutely love the parts though, can't wait to get them outside of this one.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think the pot shape is OK. I've just this morning put a display of Lego daffs & tulips in a pot of a very similar size and shape to this one and they look reayy good.

Fortunately, I've got a large spend lined up, so will hold on to get this one, I think.

Came here for the ‘greedy LEGO’ comment even though they’re literally giving away free products. What other company can give away specifically designed stuff and still be called greedy? Love it.

I like it, but not at $250 threshold for a GWP. $100-$150 would be a bit better, but still a lot. Might just shell out $40 for it on the resale market.

They’re not “giving away free products” though, it’s a buying incentive intended to give customers an extra nudge to make a purchase. I wouldn’t necessarily call it greedy because it’s a set designed for that purpose, but I also don’t like the idea that GWPs are an act of charity.

By in United States,

GWP gripes aside, it looks like a nice compact model to me. I don't find anything particularly weird about the pot.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lego isn't your kind grandparent, and these aren't generous gifts; they're marketing incentives from a massive corporation.

It's annoying to see more harshly negative comments under the popular GWPs ("Lego is too greedy!") than under the boring ones ("Easy pass").

It seems like some of y'all would be happier if Lego cancelled Gifts with Purchase altogether.

By in Sweden,

Shame I don't need anything $250 badly, because this looks like a really cute model to have around. They're doing a good job designing botanicals for all seasons, but if they're going to not make it for sale, I guess I'll just deal.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Normally I adore everything in the botanical range, but I'm not sure about this one. The pot seems a bit squat and the catkins too tall in relation to the rest of the flowers.

I hope the threshold is wrong, but it's probably another one to find on eBay, depending what they charge of course.

By in United States,

wow

By in United States,

Will definitely try to pick this up. In response to the GWP debate, I've pretty much stopped buying sets unless there's a GWP I like. The extra 300 or so parts these days really sweetens the pot, and it has reduced my impulse purchases to almost zero. As far as I'm concerned, I don't see much of a problem but also I've never been one to buy things at launch. I will confess that I miss the little impulse purchase sets of my childhood (and $10 battle packs), but also I love how high-quality these sets are.

"We've been informed that the qualifying threshold for this one is $250 / €150 / £250 which doesn't look right, so we've asked for clarification."
I suppose, if it is correct, the GWP might be part of a bundle in the US and UK, but on its own in the rest of Europe.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think I can hit that threshold. The two big Icons mixed flower sets, the new Guardians ship, and a couple small Creator sets should do it. No one should be spending $250 for a half dozen parts, but if you've been sitting on a wish list for a while like I have, $250 isn't that much.

I think some collectors have it backwards, at least for a set like this, if they're buying for the FWP. There are no unique stickers or printed tiles, and I can't imagine these parts will never be seen again. Worst-case scenario, buy the set secondhand. Even the recent anniversary sets have a reasonable markup, and I would guess that this one should come in lower.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I was told £130 in UK.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

That $250 must be canadian not the US price.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm used to high thresholds, but $250 US in absolutely insane. Totally not worth it. Even though I've got some sets I'm holding off on that would put me above that, it's not worth it for this fake plant.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I've been waiting for a good gwp to get with the bouquet and dried flowers, so I was really excited when this was first revealed. $250 is just too much for me though, I was hoping more in the $100-$120 range. I'm still holding my breath Huw's suspicions are correct and someone made a typo somewhere, but I fear I'm just setting myself up for disappointment.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Looks pretty good. But damn, that threshhold.....the €150 already doesn't seem that attractive, but the UK and US prices border on insanity....

I agree. The selection of good cheap models seems to get slimmer and slimmer. Even Ninjago hasn't really provided many sets that interest me.
At this point, I typically only get BAM and PAB from Lego. For under $30 I can get either 2 BAM and a small PAB or 1 BAM and a large PAB. Occasionally I'll pick up a set here or there, but the parts satisfy my needs well enough.

By in Mexico,

Is there a reason for this set to be classified under the "Botanical Collection" banner? It doesn't have the usual labeling and could well fit with other flower-related sets like the Sunflowers or the Roses.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Bonkers threshold. The intent seems to be to encourage me to buy another decent-sized set on top of a very expensive Lego set in order to get hold of it. Not happening

Those sets are also classified in the Botanical Collection here on Brickset, even though they are not explicitly branded that way on Lego's own marketing page.

Only 40646 Daffodils has the same box design, though all of these have similar stock photography with the flowers in vases and home decor scenes.

I know "I'all" would prefer that, yes. It's not that I want to deny this poor, starving, multi-billion dollar mom & pop franchise my money - it's more that many of the comments under these GWP-articles give off a resounding statement: we'd be happy just to (have the option to) BUY these things. This flowerpot. The little pirate-ship. The Blacktron cruiser. The Forestman hideout. The houses of the world. Honestly, all of these sets that maybe -ten- years ago, would have been impulse-buys or in the ~10-30 Euro-range.

These are good products. Most of us like these products. We would happily fork over money for these products. What's annoying, is the fact that we have to buy OTHER stuff to get THIS stuff or - and let's be honest here - just skip purchasing from Lego directly, and just bricklink the damned things, as several of us will end up doing. "I'all" included.

But since the people who we're buying the sets from must have, one way or another, already forked over the money TO Lego, it's not like TLG is actually losing money over it. So I guess "w'all" can go about our merry business in the comments-sections. Yay!"

Yee-haw! Darned tootin'! Y'all tell that lilly-livered no good sassafrass.

I really 'ave a hankerin' fer dat GWP, 'n my pardner is a rootin' 'n a tootin' fer dat fancy-smanshy pot. Neverderless, I ain't pay'n no two fiddy sawbacks fer it. Unless, dey done stack it wid sum udder mighty fine viddles- I tell ya wud now!

By in United States,

alot better than 250

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yessss, excited it's not $250. The original article mentioned it would also be available in June, but I don't see that here anymore. Will at only be around in April?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lego does this a lot. They Make a beautiful set locked behind a pay wall. Doesn’t seem to unreasonable I been looking at a few sets so this gives me an excuse to get them and stop waiting

Thinking about it a 15$ set for 150$ is like 10% off so I’ll bite :D

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

£130 threshold ... ok, I can live with that

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Some walls are just higher than others...

And shouldn't (Lego) bricks be *in* the wall instead of behind one ;-)

I mean this set won’t be for individual sale, to even hope to receive it it’s locked behind a pay limit….
