Build, Explore, Race: 2K and the LEGO Group Announce LEGO 2K Drive Coming May 19th, 2023

Available for pre-order now, the new AAA driving adventure game evolves the iconic LEGO play experience and is the first title in a multi-title partnership.

Today, 2K and the LEGO Group announced LEGO 2K Drive, the ultimate AAA driving adventure game, available worldwide on May 19th, 2023. Developed by Visual Concepts, LEGO 2K Drive evolves the iconic LEGO play experience with a vast, open world where players can build any vehicle, drive anywhere and become a LEGO racing legend.

LEGO 2K Drive will be the first release in a multi-title partnership between 2K and the LEGO Group to develop AAA LEGO games. With 2K’s proven expertise in creating high quality and engaging interactive entertainment properties and the LEGO Group’s unprecedented cultural impact, the partnership will evolve the iconic LEGO games experience fans know and love in exciting new ways.

A world-class team at Visual Concepts with deep experience in the genre will bring AAA quality, depth of gameplay and stunning visuals to a LEGO driving game for the first time. LEGO 2K Drive will combine the best elements of open-world driving and fast-paced competitive racing, while introducing a diverse vehicle customisation system.

Additionally, a collaboration with supercar and hypercar company McLaren Automotive will bring the McLaren Solus GT and McLaren F1 LM – just released in a LEGO Speed Champions double-pack set to help celebrate 60 years since McLaren was founded by racer and engineer Bruce McLaren – to the world of Bricklandia, as the cover cars perfectly encapsulate the thrilling, high-octane experience fans can expect in LEGO 2K Drive.

Key features of LEGO 2K Drive include:

  • A Story in a Vast Open World: Players will journey across Bricklandia's multiple unique biome regions as they compete against a series of charismatic rivals with hopes of one day winning the coveted Sky Cup Trophy. In LEGO 2K Drive, players choose how they want to play, with a wide open world to explore full of racing, minigames, challenges, collectables, things to destroy, and well-known vehicles from LEGO themes like City, Creator, Speed Champions and more.

  • High-Octane LEGO Racing: Racing in LEGO 2K Drive is a fast-paced, off-the-wall experience as players battle across a broad range of tracks while taking advantage of unique power-up abilities that can transform a player’s standing in the race with the touch of a button.
  • Unique Customisation: LEGO 2K Drive introduces a diverse customisation system that allows players to build their own vehicles to suit their tastes, with over 1,000 unique LEGO pieces available over the course of their adventure, in addition to a wealth of colour designs, stickers, flairs, and more.
  • Play Solo or Together: LEGO 2K Drive offers robust co-op and thrilling competitive multiplayer to enjoy with others. Play with family and friends via local, 2-person split-screen or match online with other intrepid racers of similar skill levels.

“Video games have long been an important way our fans experience the magic of the LEGO System-in Play, and 2K’s strong track record of delivering quality, innovative titles for a broad range of audiences makes them the perfect partner to create the next iconic AAA LEGO games,” said Remi Marcelli, Head of LEGO GAME. “Beginning with LEGO 2K Drive, we’re excited for fans to experience a fresh new take that builds on the LEGO humour and fun fans have come to expect.”

“With the history the LEGO brand holds, we were very conscious of the responsibility we had to both our partners and longtime fans of LEGO play, while still thinking about how we can bring something new and unique to a LEGO title,” said Greg Thomas, President of Visual Concepts. “For LEGO 2K Drive, we assembled a best-in-class team of game makers who poured their hearts into an unforgettable experience we can’t wait to share with fans.”

“The LEGO Group is an iconic brand with decades of innovative consumer experiences, and we were thrilled at the opportunity to partner with them as we continue to expand the 2K portfolio to new audiences worldwide,” said David Ismailer, President and CEO of 2K. “LEGO 2K Drive is an incredible first step in our multi-title commitment to delivering new, groundbreaking LEGO games.”

By in Australia,

Well, with three editions of the game available I’ll wait for others to tell me if it’s any good thanks.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks fun! Fingers crossed for nods and references throughout the game to the Lego Racers game.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

Looks outdated and messy unfortunately. Time to give its chance to another studio.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very awesome! Hopefully the price matches the content of the game!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Okay the game doesn't look bad, but in comparison to a LEGO Game like the Skywalker Saga I doubt it will do better. Also that polybag reminds me of the McDonalds LEGO Racer toys.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The game looks fine, building looks fun like in the first two Racers game.
GWP screams Tiny Turbos, cool throwback if that was the inspiration.
But man is the pre-announced paid-for DLC a crappy move. More FOMO baiting, great...
In a time where games are getting big content patches, even racing games like the Gran Turismo series with its updates that bring new cars, tracks and other stuff, it's not really excusable to lock similar content behind yet another paywall.
It's a shame that such practices can have a negative impact on the reception, 'cause the game itself looks like something i'd have a lot of fun with.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ooh, looks fun! I won’t be able to justify getting the Awesome Rivals Edition right away, though. Looks like I’ll miss out on the GWP, and hence the printed 2K double-wide cheese slope. Oh, well.

“Better” how - sales-wise? Well, yeah, but… does it matter to us?

I do wish I’d been able to get the deluxe version of that, with Luke with blue milk.

It does!

By in Puerto Rico,

It looks fin but it isn't a GTA LEGO edition. CHICKEN CAR!!!!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

As someone who loves LEGO, and my favorite genre of games are racing games, this does not appeal to me. LEGO games have always been kinda boring, except for LEGO Racers on N64, that game was pretty good for a LEGO-based game. Perhaps it was the lame humor and dumb music in the trailer that gave me a bad impression. This is not worth the $60-$120 they are asking for

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think this will be a hit!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Will be interesting to see how this does.

As a LEGO racing game, it seems a bit...dry, I am not sure how fun it will be, but we shall see.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am REALLY hoping this isn’t a $70-$120 game with a battle pass.

For those of you who don’t know, a battle pass is something you purchase for $10-$20. You don’t unlock the items in it instantly - you still need to earn them. However, you only have a limited amount of time to do so before they are gone forever. That’s what the Drive Pass sounds like to me.

If they don’t give you all the stuff for that price, then that’s extremely scummy.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

I'd pick this up for a twenty, looks decently silly and has split-screen. I guess that does depend on how cohesive it is otherwise, and how much gameplay there is.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think it looks fun :) A mash up between Forza and the Lego Movie. Cheesy as all hell but that's not a bad thing unless you're an edgy teenager.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

There's elements from almost every racing/driving game ever made in this thing...I'm really curious with how this will turn out come release.

Gravatar
By in United States,

seems very expensive I will probably wait for discounts

Gravatar
By in United States,

I guess I'll just google what AAA means in this context.

Edit: it just means big budget.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I think they got really inspired by the Hot Wheels game which released some time (a few years?) ago. Including the pricing strategy.

They would have sold me with references to the old Lego Racers games, but I don't see any. I will probably pick this up on a -50% sale.

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

Looks "grate".
I'm still waiting to mix Stud.io, MarioKart, Minecraft and child-friendly GTA into one massive multiplayer game:)
Bricktales was a great start. This looks promising.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That's a lot of *asterisks....

*Still looks like a fun game tho

Gravatar
By in United States,

This looks like the true sequel for the original Lego Racers :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not sure if it would be better than the Fozr Horizon 4 Lego DLC.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If it's like Asphalt 8, I'm not interested. If it's more akin to Mario Kart, sign me up!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Could be fun? I adored LEGO Racers on the N64 when I was a kid.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

For $70, this looks way too much like a cheap mobile game. I'm sure it'll do decently well amongst younger kids, especially when it inevitably gets discounted, but I'm really failing to see enough here to justify full AAA pricing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Excited for modern LEGO racers. Definitely a must-have for LEGO fans imo, and i will definitely buy it. The prices of the deluxe editions are way too much though.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

No Rocket Racer
(+ Cpt Redbeard, King Kahuka, Basil the Batlord, Johnny Thunder, Barron von Barron & Gypsy Moth)
No purchase.
Especially not at those prices.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

"[P]ost-launch seasons of Drive Pass content" sounds like a multi-player season pass, which I suspect means microtransactions and pay-to-win. Hopefully not, but I'll definitely need to know the balance between multi and single player before considering buying.

Gravatar
By in Greece,

Very bold to come out swinging with a game no one knows how good it will be and with the 60€ DLC at the same time, and I don't like it.
I mean, the game looks good, and I hope it's good, but what the people really seem to want is lego racers 3
I was very relieved to see that I'm not the only one that thinks this way! Hats off to all the Lego racers enjoyers!

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

Let's wait until it sells for €10 in a Steam sale....

How so? What exactly looks cheap, and what additions or other differences would make it justify AAA pricing to you?

Who is "Lilith"? I'm assuming you're not referring to the demon from ancient Jewish lore, as that would be an... odd thing to be concerned showing up in a Lego game

Isn't this by definition not a true sequel? Do you mean spiritual sequel?

Gravatar

price ..... arrrggghhh
stickers ...... arrrggghhhh

well, price, arrrggghhh

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Can't have a 2K games release without it being grossly overpriced and with multiple even more overpriced special editions.

Gravatar
By in United States,

When you have a game immediately advertise itself right out the gate with many editions filled with "exclusive" digital content and immediate promise of extra DLC ... that's when you wait and see how the game goes at launch before you buy.

I've learned.

Gravatar
By in France,

It's just the LEGO DLC in Forza Horizon 4 in standalone edition ....

Gravatar
By in United States,

" Additionally, a collaboration with supercar and hypercar company McLaren Automotive will bring the McLaren Solus GT and McLaren F1 LM – just released in a LEGO Speed Champions double-pack set to help celebrate 60 years since McLaren was founded by racer and engineer Bruce McLaren – to the world of Bricklandia, as the cover cars perfectly encapsulate the thrilling, high-octane experience fans can expect in LEGO 2K Drive. "
I’m imagining what my former English teacher would do to this sentence.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Curious to see that they make use of discontinued colors... One screenshot explicitly features Earth Orange and the classic (non-bluish) Greys. If it includes some themes from the '90s, I might be interested. However I don't think that's the case, judging from the given info.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

No Atari VCS version.... No sale!

Gravatar
By in United States,

HuwBot chose Roger Racoon and his Sports Car as the RSOTD today. How awesome would it be if that were an option in the game.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

High RRP with planned DLC / season pass is pretty ridiculous in my opinion. Season passes are a monetisation model best deployed by free-to-play games. I loved Lego Racers and was interested in what this would look like, but I'll definitely be waiting for reviews and decent discounts before getting it

Gravatar
By in United States,

Meh. All I want out of this is a set based on the skull-car from the leaked title screen.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I haven't been into video games in a while honestly, and this one is looking like no exception. I might sound a bit outdated here, but what happened to just buying a game and having that be it? Charging double the price for a few different maps and cars seems absurd to me, especially considering we don't even know what we're getting yet. And I know it's not just this game, I'm against this whole business model.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The video certainly doesn't make it look like a AAA (which they only mentioned five times in the press release) game.

The world looks more like a something that might have been impressive in the early days of the XBox One/PS4, but falls well short of the the genuine AAA driving games currently available.

Had they gone for a completely Lego built world (like the TT Lego Movie games) then I think that would have made it stand out from the numerous driving game available, without needing to try to match the high realism graphics.

That said a driving games largely stands or falls by it's vehicles - how they are controlled and what they look like - and I can't deny that driving Lego built ones would be cool. It wasn't clear from the video if your vehicle breaks up when taking hits but I would hope so.

And, of course, it appears to be trying to replicate the humour found in all Lego games, so will appeal to fans of that.

Of course, until there are reviews of the game then it's all guesswork and I imagine it will sell okay even if it doesn't reach the self-proclaimed AAA standard.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's certainly colorful... Agree, these multiple editions, passes, seasonal things are annoying. But the base game seems to have plenty of content. Hopefully it works out. Still holding out for a new F-Zero (or just remaster GX already!) before I get another racing game. Meanwhile, Kart 8 will more than do.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It’ll be interesting to see what price tag they put on to LEGO Mario Kart. The DLC here makes mention only of an in-game minifig, not a physical one. Where’s the USP of this game?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Could be fun, depending how extensive the 'open' world is, and whether there's still any decent progression gameplay in there.

But the fact that there are special 'limited edition' pay-to-own vehicles suggests to me that you can't actually just build anything you want, as surely then you'd be able to just replicate all of these special items at no extra cost..?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Anybody know how to get that GWP yet? The article doesn't seem to have info, and somebody told me that you'd get the set if you preorder the game but I'm not 100% sure.

Ah…another gamer. I also have much skepticism.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The name is a weird one. But it looks like 2K like to put “2K” in a lot of game titles.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Bit confused by the huge price difference between the lowest and highest version.

I did enjoy the Forza Lego add-on so I might give this a go.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This looks enjoyable, the car builder might be like LEGO Worlds where it’s too complex and tricky to learn for me to enjoy (at least on console) but I’m hoping for the best with this one and that’s not something I often do.

Lilith is the name of a character from Borderlands - a series of shooters also published by 2K. She isn’t a demon, but basically a magic user.

By in Canada,

We're overdue for a true LEGO racing game, but I'm skeptical of this "AAA" label and the high pricing. I'll wait on the sidelines.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

$ 120 for the top edition. That's the most I ever paid for a game/sim, but Flight Simulator 2020 Premium was and is worth it. This must be very good then.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Wrecknbuild:
I’d tell you how much I’ve spent on one game, but I’d have to dig up all of the Dimensions receipts to get exact numbers…

Gravatar
By in Germany,

The retail version doesn't even include a disc/cardridge. So all you're paying for is a god damn download code.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

When does this come out?

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Oh no, we'll get all the unethical video game practices of today's games + an unfinished game to boot. Calling it now!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Wait for the complete edition in a year or so time. The high price point, multiple editions, season pass, DLC model point to a business model that is telegraphing independent sequels.

Gravatar
By in United States,

They should've went the dimensions type route. Have new sets include codes for special cars and what not.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Unlike real lego;

-Never pre order a video game
-Wait for reviews and bug fixes, moreover when it's 2K
- Video game are getting deep discounts quite fast, this will sell for $30 for sure.
- Don't get tempted to pay for the deluxe edition before you know what the future content is.

Cheers!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is super disappointing. 2K is a pretty terrible publisher... Very anti-consumer; unfit for collaboration with Lego. They're notorious for not releasing their games in consumer friendly fashions and platforms (e.g., DRM-free on GOG.com). The "pre-order exclusive" here is already doubly bad: it's an exclusive, and its redemption method being a code rather than actually in tha package. They are also charging $10 more for no reason on the newer consoles -- a terrible practice that, again, just shows that they're not a company worth partnering with. Look at all the editions and asterisks. That's how you know it's done inappropriately in ways that aren't pro-customer.

Tt did a great job with all their games. The recent Lego Bricktales was also a great title. We need more of that, less of what 2K does.

EDIT: I really don't like the particular bit in the article that makes this seem like 2K now has an exclusive contract for Lego video games. I hope that's not really the case.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Reading the first half and seeing screenshots: yes yes yes Yes Yes....
Reading the second half and seeing the prices: NO! no? no no no...

I'd fork over $30 tops for what I see, which looks really promising. But life will go on without this game if those prices don't come down.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm definitely intrigued, but I think my favorite part is the classic arms on the skeletons!

I’ll let you know when they add the third movie to the LEGO Hobbit game. Or release a patched version of LEGO Star Wars II for DS.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Not gonna lie: Started grinning as soon as I heard "Hello, You fool, I love you..."...Perfect, juuuuust perfect:D.

Game look 'good', problem is: no console yet (last one bought: PS3...been eyeballing a Switch though...)...wish PCs had a physical copy, as I do that 'Aquadirt Racer' (insert 'Speed's Family' joke...). Not crazy about '2K' slapping their name on it...and still remember the glitchiness of that one WWE game they released a couple years ago...but still.:)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm torn on this...

On the one hand I absolutely love LEGO Racers and have felt that a LEGO Racers 3 was long overdue, and this is probably the closest we're gonna get.

On the other hand, I'm not a fan of the price. Personally I'm only seeing around $20-40 worth of value in that trailer. And $120 for the largest edition!?!? That's absurd! For that price instead of a handful of new skins and a new map you could be getting a full 'nother game!

I know that overcharging for collectors content is kind of 2K's forte, but I can't see it panning out well here. Most of their games target sports fans or mainstream gamers, who are usually funneling all of their money into gaming hobbies and can fork over the insane prices. But this game seems more niche and marketed toward children and LEGO fans. The former don't have nearly that level of cash to splash and the later already spend most of their money on the actual product.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like how try-hard this press release is saying FIVE times that this is a AAA game. As with most computer games, I'll pass until reviews are in and all the bugs are out.
