LEGO Ideas review results announced!

Posted by ,

The results from the third 2022 review have just been announced on the LEGO Ideas blog.

Two projects from 35 have passed review and will join nine others currently in various stages of production to be made into sets.

Find out which ones after the break!

Jaws

By Jonny Campbell (aka Diving Faces).

"Johnny has managed to capture so many of the details that make the movie so iconic. It all perfectly captures the thrilling and suspenseful atmosphere of the classic blockbuster movie. It's no wonder that this project gathered so much attention and support on LEGO Ideas."

Cat

By Damian Andres (aka The Yellow Brick).

"To create this perfect-looking furry friend, Damian took inspiration from his real-life companion at home, which is a cross of a Siamese and a Birman. It’s clear to see these features in his final model which captures so many of the wonderful details of these cats."

WOW both of these are stellar builds!

KITTY!

By in United Kingdom,

Congratulations to all the builders who made to review! It's a shame Thunderbirds and Wallace & Gromit didn't get through, but hey, the cat and the shark are nice builds!

By in United Kingdom,

Really enjoying the ideas/brinklink designer program boats theme.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Two sets, and only seven letters!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm really excited about the Jaws set (and even though I don't tend to collect non-minifig-scale sets, I could theoretically see myself getting the Cat set too). It's particularly great to have a set based on a non-Disney/non-animated pre-1980 IP, and I look forward to owning minifigs of Chief Brody, Matt Hooper and Quint.

The only 'problem' is that I now feel compelled to purchase the wonderful, but very expensive, Lighthouse Ideas set to go alongside the Orca fishing boat. Until now, I wasn't thinking of adding a coastline to my Lego City, but since the Orca/Jaws is a must-buy set for me, it seems I'm going to have to find ways to incorporate a coast to my city.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The "Jaws" set will make a fun Easter egg to place in a LEGO city!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

These are both superb. Congratulations to the designers!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

About time one of the JAWS projects got chosen! This looks really good.
Should have done Thunderbird 2 as well though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Jaws was selected and that's all I cared about. I'm happy with this review.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

meh

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sigh... Still no Thunderbirds. These are such perfect reproductions at a very affordable scale. I don't know if the team thinks there is not a big enough market or if there are licensing issues, but it is a shame. @Andrew Clark, if Lego won't make this, take it to CaDA!

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

I adore that Jaws passed but, a LEGO cat?

Gravatar
By in United States,

neither of these excite me but they are both good builds.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

First time I might pick up all the sets from a single batch, depending on how these turn out.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

ok for once I actually like both projects. I love the cat. But I am disappointed Thunderbird 2 didn't make it

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I expect the Cat will be a 3 in 1 build, where you can build 3 different types of cats with the extra pieces.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hurray for cat! I will be looking forward to purchasing this set to add to my cat collection!

I would like it if there were color variations other than siamese, but a cat is a cat, no matter.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Too bad the Architect House didn't make it, although it would have been probably very expensive. Anyway, I wasn't too excited about this round, I might get the Jaws set, we'll see how it turns out and if the pricing is reasonable.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I think we need a bigger shelf

Surprising and fun selections!

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

Happy with the Jaws set being selected. Do not really care about a cat. I have one of these furry friends at home, and do not want to scare him with a lifesize reproduction in LEGO :)

I too would like to see Thunderbirds made, but I am afraid that that is really too niche for LEGO, both in terms of geographic and overall commercial appeal.

I would also like to see a Zelda set being made, but here my guess is that LEGO is actually working on something of their own together with Nintendo.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Both of them are nice. Can't wait to see someone combine and modify them so the cat is eating the shark like a fish.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't know about that Jaws set, I think it needs a bigger boat ;-)
Actually what I really hope is that the official set has the same amount of detail on The Orca, that's a really good MOC.
Congrats to the designers, both are really good.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Nice enough, but not particularly special.
Lack of Thunderbirds a huge disappointment, but hopefully means that a full Thunderbirds theme is just around the corner... well I can live in hope, but insult would probably be added to injury by being the more current cartoon version!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Congrats to the winners! I wasn’t really invested in this round, but there are multiple sets I would very much love to see LEGO do, with the Shrek swamp at number 1!

I'm just delighted to see a user from outside the UK who even knows what it is!

Interesting sets, I've never seen Jaws but I can certainly admire a very solid model. Cat is an unexpected one, maybe there were a lot of cat lovers on the panel this time.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Can't believe that after so many tries, Jaws has been approved. So exciting.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I'm a bit surprised that they chose Jaws. After all, it's not a very family friendly subject matter.
Not that I would mind though.

And as for the Cat, I will only say

"This is mine, that's mine, all this is mine, I'm claiming all this as mine. Except that bit. I don't want that bit. But all the rest of this is mine! Hey, this has been a good day! I've eaten five times, I've slept six times and I've made a lot of things mine!"

Gravatar
By in United States,

We’re gonna need a bigger wallet.

Congrats to the builders!

Gravatar
By in United States,

You're gonna need a bigger boat.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is fine.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

There were an awful lot of these I would have brought if they were produced.

These two are ones I wouldn't.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Finally the argument is settled. A Lego cat is always preferable to a real cat!

I just remember the original series being distributed on Belgium TV sometime in the 80s or 90s. Since then, I have never seen it on TV anywhere. Apparently there is also a remake CGI series that ran on iTV from 2015 to 2020 called Thunderbirds Are Go, but I was not even aware of its existence until just now :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I will definitely be picking up the Jaws set, provided the final model does not deviate too much from the submission.
The cat is cute, but not something that interests me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Man, I remember back in the early Ideas (and CUUSOO) days, when it was a matter of some speculation whether we’d ever get an Ideas review in which more than one project was approved at once. And nowadays it’s pretty much the norm; we’ve had a whole slew of reviews in which they’ve approved two or even three at once; once they even did four. Pretty amazing how the program has developed and grown…

Oooh, a cool idea might be if it’s built solidly, with a “core” of one color palette and an exterior of another, designed in such a way so that you can build it with one set of colors on the outside to build a Siamese cat like the original submission, or alternately build it as a different type and have the “Siamese cat” colors form the internal core.

Indeed, it’s not every IP that can do that, but the original Jaws is one of those films with enduring popularity. I tend to think of Star Wars as sort of the cutoff point; most of the licensed character-/narrative-based IPs they do are ones that have come out since Star Wars. There have been a few exceptions - Marvel, DC, Middle-Earth, Doctor Who, Scooby-Doo, and Disney generally. But even with most of those, they’ve typically focused on later iterations and incarnations (with the Middle-Earth stuff all being based specifically on the Peter Jackson screen adaptations rather than directly on Tolkien’s original written works, Marvel and DC stuff mostly derived from various post-Star Wars screen adaptations, the modest collection of LEGO Doctor Who stuff recreating stuff from the 11th and 12th Doctors, etc.). Jaws is one that can support it, though.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Although I’m glad they chose a cat, the previous review round had a better cats submission, which they rejected. Why choose this one? If it’s purely the “idea”, rather than the actual build, that seems extremely harsh on the rejected designer.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I appreciate saving some money.

Both are interesting builds and otherwise I can see the interest, but I have to cut LEGO out somewhere, so I will have to pass most likely.

But congrats to who made it through. Definitely a feat worth the effort.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think I may have actually supported both of those, but the only one I really wanted was Thunderbirds. We know the IP owner was fully behind a Thunderbirds set so that is entirely down to LEGO not wanting to do it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

With the average time to release of these ideas sets, the Jaws set will probably come out in 2025, just in time for the 50th anniversary. Perfect timing!

Gravatar
By in United States,

As nice as they are, these castles and modular buildings have no chance of being approved. With so many sets reaching the 10k threshold, I feel that it's time for Lego to narrow the entries by restricting them based on certain criteria, like theme, and increase the supporter threshold.
I would have loved to have seen Jack Skellington's House make the cut, but I'm sure licensing knocked that one off.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The only problem with the Jaws set is the size of Jaws. You are either going to need a smaller or jaws or you're going to need a bigger boat!

As for the cat - the only problem I see with it - is that I have a tabby, and so if I wanted at cat model I'd want a tabby, but someone else might have a torty, a Siamese, a Burmese, a Bengal, or just black cat...

I wonder if this had more to do with it passing this time than anything else, even if it comes out a bit early it would still be on the shelves for the 50 anniversary.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's funny looking back now that both Up and Pac-Man have been made independent of Ideas since this review pool was announced!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Jaws is here, here is Jaws,
He is a shark that fights the law,
he was in a movie, a movie called Jaws!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the look of both of these and will probably end up getting both (pending final design and pricing, of course).

Gravatar
By in Chile,

At least Jaws gor approved!

Gravatar
By in Poland,

So now 75810 could be updated with an actual "Jaws" poster in place of the "Shark" one. :P

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm a bit disappointed about Fatberg not making it. Do Not-Approved designs ever get released with MOC instructions?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’m going to have to see if I can rebuild the cat into a grey tabby with a huge bell on her collar, and a hummingbird in her mouth. I expect my mom will not be amused. My dad might, though.

Exacly my thoughts, completly agree.

I love the touch of the fish bones with the cat.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Was really hoping for an update to the Wright Flyer 10124 , but these are also good picks. Would also love to see a Technic set pass like the flip clock, we haven't gotten anything like that in Ideas yet. Anyway, I have a crazy cat lady in the making who will adore the Siamese. Curious that the Cats of 2022 round 2 failed, but this one passed...

I occasionally see this sort of argument put forth, and I confess I’m mystified. If I were part of the LEGO Ideas team myself, I could understand wanting smaller batches to keep the workload manageable, but… from the standpoint of our outside, civilian LEGO consumer and fan selves, why exactly would we want smaller review batches? Wouldn’t any tightened set of guidelines that curtailed stuff tend to prevent at least a few interesting niche subjects from making it to review, and preclude even the slight possibility they’d be approved? And wouldn’t it also mean fewer LEGO fans from among our ranks get to experience the already-fairly-exclusive thrill of getting at least as far as review, and enjoying the side benefits of the “consolation prize” gift credit? I don’t understand why so many fans find that desirable…

@NathanR2015:
I would have bought a W&G set, and I know one other person who would have as well. I do have minifigs of them sitting on the upper deck of my vintage Routemaster, which will have to suffice.

@AliveAndBricking:
I’ll be pissed if they just put one of the molded sharks in that set. If they do, I hope the original submitter publishes instructions of their version.

@Anak:
Sometimes they’ve rejected similar projects multiple times and end up accepting one out of the blue. If it was licensed IP, or active internal IP, it could just be a matter of timing (license is still tied up elsewhere, internal theme is still active, etc.). This certainly isn’t the r former, but possibly might have been running into problems with the Brickheadz pets. Alternately, they did note with The Office that they basically caved in after seeing a steady stream of similar submissions. Maybe they’ve seen several cat projects and figured there really is some enough demand to be worth doing.

@Blondie_Wan:
Yup, the Tolkien stuff was specifically licensed through WB for the six films, Scooby-Doo has throwbacks to previous series but was licensed for whichever series was current around the time the sets came out (and ironically, someone pointed out that the characters looked more like older series than the one the license was tied to), and Doctor Who was even tied to the second run of the show rather than the first. DC and Marvel both have a long history of reinventing and repackaging the same stuff for new generations.

More money for me to spend on other sets I like. Neither of these appeal to me but they are nice builds so congratulations to the creators. Still waiting to see the upcoming Viking Village.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great designs both of them! Hoping that the cat is life size as I have a Siamese Snowshoe. She will
Love this.

Thunderbird would have been great but not sure how international that is. I know it from the UK as I’ve lived there but it doesn’t translate across the pond I’m afraid.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Not a set I'd buy, but I do like the Jaws set. That cat though....I don't really see the appeal. Not even that much for cat lovers, as it's gonna be a pretty specific type of cat.

For most of the sets that didn't make it, not that surprising. This wasn't exactly the strongest review round we've had either. Unfortunate for the Travel Suitcase, which was easily my favorite of the bunch.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

The ideas results have been depressing for years now. Just good ideas going to waste while stuff that is tired or obvious wins out. Jaws fits right in with the generic pop culture theme as an obvious choice and as if Lego needed an Ideas project for even more cats.

I wouldn't hold my breath. I believe Jaws was rated the equivalent of 'PG' in most territories, including the US and UK (albeit '15' in Denmark), whereas I'm fairly certain that all those other franchises have always been rated 'R' in the US/'15' or '18' in the UK etc. The Spielberg factor probably counts for a lot too, since his brand is associated with family and/or mass-appeal films, rather than anything that might be categorised as an exploitation movie.

That said, I certainly think the Jaws set makes those other prospects *more* likely than they might otherwise have been, assuming there's away to tackle those IPs whilst somehow avoiding the blood and violence elements. In the case of Jaws, much of the film simply concerns three very different men on a boat preparing to catch a particularly large fish.

Just as long as they avoid Ben Gardner's decapitated head, or a minifig of a little boy on a lilo, they should be fine, and stay within Lego's 'Brand Standards' framework.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very disappointed that lego has never made a big zoo set. I imagine it’s profit related though. The only reason I can think is that they would rather trickle out a couple animal molds in sets here and there. They want people to buy 20 sets to build their own zoo rather than sell them all at once in one set.

That reminds me of something I was told by my dad about when he went to see the film for the first time way back when: When Hooper goes into the water to look into the wrecked boat, the light on the projector went out. The movie kept rolling while they got the bulb fixed.... it apparently came back on just as Ben Gardener's head makes it's appearance. I can only imagine what that did to the viewers!

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

I'm happy for both winners (and congrats to contestants for making this far)!

I can see why Lego picked these. Not particularly interested in either, but hopefully, if anything, this will tell more creators and voters alike that it's FINE to not make your submission THE biggest lego set ever released.

I've seen the scale of these finalist sets creep up massively over the years and it's just not practical for a final product. but voters are also to blame here, not giving love to smaller stuff which should be equally as(if not more) impressive when executed well (saying more with less is a skill in itself!).

Anyhow, Congrats to everyone involved. I look forward to seeing how these come out (and also the great illustrations Lego has started doing for the instructions of these Ideas sets :D).

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I'm so glad that a Jaws set is coming after all these years… If it's released in 2024, it'll celebrate the 50th anniversary of the book's publication; if it's delayed until 2025, it'll be 50 years since the film's release. I look forward to adding the Orca, Chief Brody, Matt Hooper, Quint and Bruce (i.e. the shark) to my collection.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Guess I'm with most of the other UK commenters - the only one of these that would have been an insta-buy is Thunderbird 2. A classic Thunderbirds line-up would be amazing - although I suspect it's too niche to be chosen. The flip clock and the cipher machine looked decent too though, as did many of the enormous, beautiful and clearly-never-going-to-be-picked submissions.

As for these two, they're both nice enough builds but I've got no interest in either. It is nice to see Ideas picking some of the smaller sets though, not everything needs to be massive!

I hope they resubmit every time it’s rejected. I’ll vote for it again and again. Of the hundreds of rejected submissions, and the dozens I’ve supported, this is probably the one I most want made. I would say 10-20% of submissions in the review should be made. The more in the review, then the more that should be successful. The usual 1 or 2 (4 was an isolated incident in the history of the theme) is an insult to the designers and the supporters. It isn’t the cost or a restriction on the number of sets they can make. There simply isn’t a good reason.

For a series that’s sixty years old, had a film and a cgi reboot, I’d be surprised if many hadn’t at least heard of it. Not that it matters if one had seen the show or not. That is an excellent vehicle and play set regardless. I’ll definitely buy the Dungeons and Dragons set next year but I’ve never played the game in my life, or seen either film. It simply looks excellent.

@8BrickMario:
Reviews are every four months. There’s no way they cranked out either of those sets that quickly, so they were well into development when this round of projects went under review.

@windjammer:
There’s the Bricklink program, but they’ll cost a fortune compared to what could be released under Ideas. Some builders may have posted their own instructions at some point, and one person sold the designs to a clone brand (and got kicked out of the Bricklink program as a result).

@starkllr:
Ooh, program in a random double-take, and set it across the room any time you watch a horror film!

@Doctor_Hugh:
Plus, the original run has to be at nearly 20 films, by now, right? I mean, they’ve had, what, 7.5 years since the last one came out?

I just saw a JW book with two minifigs that were decapitated, amputated at the waist, and their legs were backwards. Bruce has his work cut out for him if he’s gonna keep up with those crazy dinosaurs…

Including of course Twizzle, Supercar and the excellent Fireball XL5. O.K. Maybe not Twizzle... he was just plain scary!

By in Canada,

another weak ideas reveal, to be honest. but i didn't expect much from this wave, the only ones that i thought had a chance of making it through AND i liked at all were Up and the cipher machine. but they just made an Up set (that deserved better design, really) and the cipher machine is just not picked. starting to lose interest in lego ideas.

"

There’s plenty of good reasons, you just don’t like them. Lego likely only ever wants to make a couple from any given submission period as to not have too many Ideas sets out at a time. Not to mention many submissions just would not make great sets to mass produce for consumers. Just because there’s a ton of submissions doesn’t mean more should be made.

@monkyby87:
We do know that Ideas has a limit, like other themes, on how many new elements they can call into production, including recolors and prints. We don't know if that number changes based on the quantity of sets they release in a given year. Maybe they get a fixed amount, and maybe twice as many sets means they have to budget half as many per set during the design phase. If that's how it works, then it does make sense to limit how many projects they approve if the other option would be to compromise the aesthetics of every set across the entire range.

By in Australia,

Jaws will look great on my ‘Mega Movie’ shelf, so I kind of need it! Hopefully they pull it off. As for the cat, I’m a dog person, so I might pass on it for now.

Community and Wallace and Gromit would have been nice, but I’m not mad anyway.

I like both sets Jaws more.

@FuddRuckus:
Yup, no repeats allowed in Ideas. Once a subject gets approved once, it’s added to the permanent banned list. I suppose if something skunks the deal (stole the project from another AFOL, or sold it to another company), they might lift the ban until such time as a new project gets approved, but that’s the only possibility I see.

While this rule seems harsh for any latecomers whose projects end up going under review just as another similar project is approved, imagine how bitter it must have been for the other submitter who got a competing Doctor Who project into the same round as 21304.

"I think I may have actually supported both of those, but the only one I really wanted was Thunderbirds. We know the IP owner was fully behind a Thunderbirds set so that is entirely down to LEGO not wanting to do it. "

Interesting to hear, I missed that. When did ITV openly support it?

By in United Kingdom,

Another *sigh* for no Thunderbirds here. I never buy on day 1 at full RRP but I would've made an exception for TB2...

Guess it's seen as too parochial for Lego to make commercial sense...
