Set #9

Happiness is getting to design a warm puppy :P
I'm a big fan of classic comic strips like Peanuts, so it was very exciting to work on this adorable pop culture icon!

It was very important for me to capture the minimalistic style of the comic strip and create different poses for our beloved duo! I remember reading "how to draw animation" books as a kid, which explained the way the bodies of cartoon characters defy the laws of physics and sometimes get distorted - to convey the movement and emotions. This is the reason behind having two neck positions (for standing vs sleeping) and for the legs to be facing outwards in the standing position and inwards in the sitting position. These were intentional, to make the poses look accurate to the comic strip.

The original LEGO Ideas submission, created by Robert Becker, included the campfire, Snoopy and Woodstock. When we decided to add the doghouse (there was no way we would make Snoopy without his house!), we explored different ways to combine it with the campfire scene. After various unfolding house variations (I called them doghouse origami), we went for the simplest and most effective solution, to just lift the house and reveal the campfire inside. After all, we all know that Snoopy's house is bigger on the inside! This also enables you to display the full house next to the campfire scene.

After trying out all kinds of elements for Woodstock's hair, nothing really worked, so we designed a new element, that could also be used as a piece of grass!

Anthony designed the graphics and Ann the new element for this set.

This is the cutest set I've worked on (so far), while "on loan" to the Botanicals team! While exploring various plant ideas, I came up with the ice plant (delosperma), as it grows on my favorite beach in Athens - it was almost a subconscious decision!
Melody designed the super cute faces and they ROCK!

Set #5

I was super excited to play a tiny part in the huge Star Wars galaxy – a dream within the dream of being a LEGO designer! I’m also a big fan of the LEGO Star Wars mid-scale Starship collection, so I was very happy to work on Kylo Ren’s Command Shuttle!
Small(er than my other sets) but a different kind of challenge, it features foldable wings, so you can display it in flight or landing mode.
And - SPOILER ALERT! - it comes with a tiny version of our little angry boy hidden inside! (I had lots of fun with that)

The Star Wars team was super welcoming and helpful and I really hope I’ll get the chance to work with them again, in a future not so far, far away! Special thanks to John Ho, who made the concept model and helped me throughout the development :)

LEGO Ideas No. 64
Bricklist notes
Set #4

I’m extremely proud of this one! It was the first really big model I got to work on and I happily accepted the challenge. The original -and awesome- IDEAS submission was designed by Aaron Hall (aka CTDPower).

My goal for this set was to seamlessly combine 3 aspects:

1. Detailed interior spaces and modularity
During my career in architecture, I was involved in the design of many museums, so adding a steam engine museum in the boat was my favorite part. Even more so, because it includes the actual working engine of the boat! My second favorite is the elegant restaurant, inspired by Nile steamboats (and murder mysteries). The tables were built tubeside up, to create a nice tablecloth effect, and the chairs were inspired by 19th century Viennese wooden chairs – their Technic back is my favorite part usage in the set.

2. Working boat functions
I’ve always enjoyed some Technic parts and functions in LEGO sets, so it was great to be able to incorporate a bit of steam-era engineering. You can activate the iconic bright red stern paddle by pushing the boat on a flat surface (making TOOT TOOT sounds is optional). You can also steer the boat from the pilot house. The boarding stages can be lifted, lowered and rotated to provide easy access for the passengers. Also, when the boat is placed on the display stand, you can manually rotate the paddle – and it’s very satisfying!

3. Exterior display value
Festive banners (most croissants in a LEGO set), ornate smoke stacks, strings, railings, flags, navigation lights, every detail is there! The strings especially were a big challenge, but I had some advice from Hans, the Endurance’s captain ;)

As always, this was a team effort. Huge thanks to everyone who helped make this happen! Last but not least, a big shoutout to our amazing graphic designers, Nathan and Crisy, who managed to perfectly blend Easter Eggs, technical drawings and 19th century aesthetics!

Based on winning entry of 100 years of fairytales! building competition, "Disney Magic" by user '2A2A'.

LEGO Ideas No. 60
Bricklist notes
Set #3

"Magic of Disney" was created by Anna aka 2A2A and was the fan vote winner from the “100 Years of fairytales” challenge on LEGO Ideas. To prepare for this set, I (re)watched 15 Disney movies!

We wanted to add new characters to Anna’s super colorful submission, so, in collaboration with Disney, we chose characters of all ages, representing different continents of the world and different eras of Disney animation!
* The magic brooms on flooded steps from Fantasia, 1940
* Geppetto on his raft from Pinocchio, 1940 (I was very happy that an older character was included in the set. I also personally see him as a homage to Ole Kirk Christiansen)
* Sebastian and Flounder from The Little Mermaid, 1989 (best Disney duo!)
* Belle and the enchanted rose in the ballroom from Beauty and the Beast, 1991
* Simba on Pride Rock from The Lion King, 1994 (my favorite Disney movie – and soundtrack!)
* Lilo on her surf from Lilo & Stitch, 2002
* Bruno (and a rat friend) and la Casita from Encanto, 2021

As expected, the most challenging part to build was Mickey’s head! At some point, my desk was full of heads of different sizes. (And bodies. And hands. Not necessarily connected the way they should be!) We tried different scales, combined with eyes, hats and ears, and different open/closed mouth versions, before choosing the final one.
We expanded the waves around Mickey’s body, to connect all the micro builds and add structural strength and visual cohesion. Also to help Lilo surf!
And of course, the best part of this set are the minifigures! They’re the cutest and funniest! Nathan and Ashwin did an amazing job! The set also features a new flower element for the enchanted rose, designed by Nicola, which is also mirrored on the stained glass window decoration.

PS. While building the set, you’ll discover another familiar character… a special Easter Egg for Anna ;)

Set #2

A 9+ set, designed for a family building experience. The concept is very simple: brick-built letters, arranged in multiple layouts. But it had a rather unusual design process, worth sharing!

What I always found frustrating in such products was the restrictions with the number of letters you could use. Most similar products have a set quantity of each letter, for example 5 As, 3 Bs, 2 Cs, etc., based on the frequency each letter is used in common words. My challenge was to make sure that the parts in the set would be enough to write (almost) anything! Peter worked on the first concept models, so kudos to him for the amazing font. I optimized the letter builds, in order to maximize the number of common elements used between different letters. I created a spreadsheet with all the characters and parts, and coded a "feasibility check" function. With multiple language support – you can write in any language that uses the latin script! You can add numbers, symbols and punctuation marks. We tested it with movie quotes, song titles, proverbs, anything we could come up with. The result is that you can write (almost) anything, up to 30 characters long!

We selected a neutral color scheme, so the model would fit any interior decor style. Plus, the tiles used for the letters are common - so it's super easy to make custom characters from parts in your stock!

You can write horizontally, vertically, split it into two sections and make your own combinations – you can even transform this into a family game! There are separate instructions posters for all the characters, for the rest of the family or friends, so you can all build together! And for the final touch, add fun emojis (designed by Nathan) to decorate your message!

(I worked on concept models for this set)

Adam Vaughan designed this set - kudos to him for the incredible galactic greebling!

Before passing the baton to him, I did some early space exploration :) I worked on a few concept models, experimenting with different color schemes and parts. I also did a bit of space research, selecting points of interest and trying to find their exact locations in our galaxy!

This is actually the first set I contributed to, before embarking on my Ideas journey! I had a great time being part of the Art team :)

LEGO Ideas No. 55
Bricklist notes
Set #1

I was very excited to start my journey from such an iconic piece of architecture and, of course, from the LEGO Ideas team :)

The original IDEAS submission was designed by John Cramp. Scaling down the original build, my intention was to keep every detail and add even more! The dome of the phone box was the most challenging to build, as it had to be nice and clean both from the top and bottom, and I tried to get as much light as possible from the light brick! I'm very happy with how it turned out, as it looks clean and simple, but has all the fine detailing that makes it an elegant model.

Ashwin and Claus worked on the amazing graphics of the set, adding a ton of references and Easter eggs!
