Prepare to soar above Arrakis in the new LEGO Icons Atreides Royal Ornithopter

The LEGO Group has today announced its first ever build experience from the Dune universe, from Legendary Entertainment based on Denis Villeneuve's film adaptation of Frank Herbert's masterpiece, with the LEGO Icons Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter, bringing one of the most iconic aircraft from the Spice-filled sci-fi epic to life in LEGO brick form.

As part of the new 1,369-piece build experience, fans of Dune will be able to recreate the dynamic dragonfly-inspired design of an Ornithopter like never before, with functional blades on the aircraft that can flap and retract with a 180-degree rotation.

Measuring 9 inches (23 cm) high, 22 inches (57 cm) long and 31 inches (79 cm) wide, the LEGO Icons Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter features a foldable landing gear – and the set also comes with eight all-new LEGO Minifigures of key characters from Dune, including Paul Atreides, Lady Jessica, Gurney Halleck, Chani, Leto Atreides, Liet Kynes, Duncan Idaho and Baron Harkonnen in his long robe.

The LEGO Icons Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter creates an amazing toy or display piece for fans of Frank Herbert’s original Dune novels or Denis Villeneuve’s recent hit film franchise, with Dune: Part Two set to arrive in cinemas from March 15th 2024.

“Like fans across the world, we were fully enraptured by the epic Dune when it released – so our return to Arakkis in Dune: Part Two was the perfect opportunity to bring this iconic craft to life in LEGO brick form,” said Michael Psiaki, Design Master at the LEGO Group. “Builders can now recreate this impressive ship with amazing detail, whether to proudly display or recreate their favourite scenes from the epic Dune saga at home.”

“Turning a beloved Dune icon into a LEGO masterpiece has always been our dream. The unique and creative design of this product perfectly aligns with both the Dune and LEGO spirit, and we're excited for fans of all ages to enjoy the experience," said Amber Sheppo, Vice President, Consumer Products and Partnerships, Legendary Entertainment.

The LEGO Icons Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter is available to pre-order from 24th October, and on-sale from the 1st February 2024, with the set available to buy in-stores and online for 164.99 USD / EUR and 149.99 GBP.

By in Germany,

The red (and blue) stuff NEEDS to be replaced, otherwise pretty cool. Are these new wing/blade pieces?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Yes, pretty cool, but somehow I'm a bit disappointed that the wings are not 'brick' built. I might get it at some point, but is a 25%-off-or-below-purchase.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

That looks really good! Also this is probably why Capn. Rex didn't get a cloth kama: they needed all years' production worth of cloth for the Baron :)

EDIT: you can see some of its features in action in the RacingBrick video. It is VERY swooshable!

Survey Choice - “Didn’t ask for it. Don’t need it. Could be easily talked into buying it.”

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

What did Dark Tan do to earn this kind of rejection?

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

This looks great, and an amazing selection of figures too.
Wish UCS Star Wars could do this, but I'll definitely take this instead.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Looks cool. But why replace the common red 2L Technic axles with black ones and still use red pins with ball that are also available in black?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm... intrigued. I don't think this is for me, but looking forward to admiring the model in my local Lego store.

I haven't seen either the 1984 movie nor the recent one, but from reading the books I always imagined Baron Harkonnen as immensely corpulent, and not tall.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

LEGO insists on that garbage pseudo-hood piece and ruins yet another minifigure.
Eventually they'll realise their original hood piece was and remains vastly superior to this crap that looks like a shower-towel draped around a minifigure's head.

The rest of the build looks cool. But it means nothing to me. I didn't see Dune and honestly have no interest in seeing it. But I'm sure many will love it.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Price in Europe is €164.99 not €149.99

Oh he definitely is. It's just in the latest movie he wears an immensely long robe that hangs down to the ground and extends his silhouette whenever he floats around with his levitation apparatus.

Agreed. I was really looking forward to this set reveal, but I'm disappointed that the color scheme is far too dark. It makes it look like another generic Star Wars set, like that recent Cad Bane ship. If they had done this in tan / dark tan / browns, I think it would have been far more attractive and distinctive. Bummer.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I have to say I'm a bit underwhelmed by the design. The figures look good, but I was expecting a better looking build for the price. The orange Guardian's ship was cheaper and looked better.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I might end up getting this just to see how the technic features work (Folding wings, Wing movement, retracting landing gear). The red and blue technic axels and pins will definitely need to be switched out, though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

After I try to get the guardian's ship for Christmas, this will be up there on my wish list.

Gravatar
By in Hong Kong,

Day One buy for me, no doubt!
I love this movie and the result is stunning!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Also I saw the duckbricks video, this thing is huge.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

@CapnRex101 You didn't update € price.

I like build, price seems a bit too high imho for ppl which are not Dune huge fans, even though minifigs have new prints and look good.

Also: again good example that black background isn't always best choice. There could be more sand on box! Sand was dropping from the screen in cinema all the time!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Denis Villeneuve is my favourite director, and although I find Arrival and Prisoners to be much superior films, I should try and get this even if it would look better in dark tan.

Some of the minifigures could be better though, particularly Paul. I also mistook Leto for Stilgar when I first saw him! He doesn't look like Oscar Isaac.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I guess it is time I finish watching Dune on Netflix.

I had the same initial impression, and while on technic i can accept exposed pins here it makes the model look like a MOC in progress.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That big minifigure though, Do not remember that in books or original movie.

Gravatar
By in United States,

What’s even is that minifigure

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

The function is super cool, but those red and blue parts sticking out really break the illusion unfortunately

Gravatar
By in United States,

Blessed be the passing of the Maker. Blessed br Shai'hulud.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Never seen/read Dune, but I think I might have a use for that med. nougat head with blue eyes...

Gravatar
By in United States,

When I saw the first preview image, I thought the Baron's cloak things was a solid plastic piece like the newer dress style pieces. Which would have been really funny and made him look 15' tall instead of this, where you can see his actual legs under the robes.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

That Baron Harkonnen minifig isn’t going to fit in my display cabinet :-D

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

That Baron Harkonnen made me laugh out loud when I saw it, it’s beautiful.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Retract is 90deg rotation?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

This is amazing. They’ve gone all out on the figures, I expected one stillsuit print to be reused for everyone. Paul is a little off but the others are just about perfect. Jessica’s gold dress is one of my favourite costumes from a movie in years, so glad that it made it into the set. The functions are very impressive, can’t wait to build this set. Day 1 buy, hopefully it convinces LEGO to do more Dune sets. There’s a few more characters I need as minifigures. Are Sardaukar and Atreides battle packs too much to ask for?

Gravatar
By in United States,

President Business wore it better.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not my jam, but this is SUPER cool.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Who's Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue?

Haven't seen the movie or read the books, my only familiarity with Dune comes from the PC game about 3 decades ago. Not even sure if this was in there. So no clue how authentic it is. But as a whole, I think this looks pretty great. And just having seen the video, I absolutely love the mechanisms! This is more Technic than many Technic sets nowadays, albeit with the same color puke issues. The video also gives a better impression of the size, just looking at the pictures it looked smaller and thus rather pricey, but it doesn't seem too bad after all.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is great. Also that new front canopy piece looks super useful.
Also @MisterBrickster :D Literally snorted when I read that

Gravatar
By in United States,

First thought: $165 for a lot of uncreative studded plates and a bunch of exposed Technic elements.

Yay?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

That Landing Gear mechanism gave me fuzzy feelings....

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Never seen the film(s), but from Mike Psiaki this is obviously going to be excellent!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I can has sandworm?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I'm still surprised that this was approved, considering that Dune isn't exactly a kid friendly sci-fi franchise like Star Wars. You have a depraved Baron who enjoys taking heart plugs out of victims and bleed them to death, drinks from crushed animals, and employs servants with missing organs that tends to his boils. And that's not mentioning the horror that is the Guild Navigator and the Box.

If this is due to relaxed guidelines on licensing, Lego should go all the way and take a look at other in-demand IPs like Star Trek and Halo.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I hope the instructions are easier to follow than the film's plot!!!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Sees the set. "Hmm, looks nice."
Sees the price. "Ok, not THAT nice."

Gravatar

That Baron description is from the 1980's film, not the 2021 movie or the original book.

But the Baron in the book does have a harem of young boys who he abuses and murders though which is arguably more shocking. But that story beat is omitted from the 2021 film.

Then again this is not the first weird Lego villain with some odd back-story. Remember the Lone Ranger theme gave us a figure whose back-story was "I lost my balls in the Civil War, I'm evil now!"

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

There appears to be a typo in the price it has additional digit in front of the actual price.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not quite seeing the value there.
Could do with a stand for use with the Ornithopter in flight mode.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I loved the first book (admittedly, though, I never finished the series). I also love the David Lynch film, and I am very much enjoying Villeneuve's efforts. These minifigures are great! But I am going to withhold my opinion about the main build until I see it in the brick. The photos do not excite me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If it looked a little more steampunk, I'd be tempted. But I'm trying to cut back on purchases of large Lego sets, and I haven't seen the movie. I have read the book, but it's been years.

@MisterBrickster: If I did get the set, I'd pose the two in a face-off.

@PurpleDave: 75174?

Gravatar
By in United States,

For a minute there, I thought the Baron's cloth robe was made of hard plastic. He was poised to take the tallest official Lego minifigure crown from the Toy Story 3 figures, but, alas, it was not to be!

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Mike is amazing designer, he really sold me on to this set, even though i know nothing about Dune.

You really should watch the designers video: https://youtu.be/qiWzKOuhPqQ?si=N2rHhLQfrvdK3Q7h"

The reveal video really shows how amazing this set is. It's the most playable adult set since the Galaxy Explorer.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

LEGO Mass Effect when?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

While its alot more impressive then I thought it'd be, its not quite as accurate as they could have made it. The cockpit angles are a little too boxy compared to the on screen version. They also really need to start making black technic pins as the red and blue really detracts from the overall look.

That said, It also seems odd they've chosen to make such a large and complicated model for this niche film. Even as a sci-fi fan, I much prefered the origional Dune movie, so this model wouldn't be amongst my top choices. Some of the figs seem odd choices too to fit with this set, even if they are iconic to dune, they've pretty much nothing to do with the ornithopter.

So yeah.. overall, seems like an expensive set that won't sell well to me.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

This is an amazing set. Villeneuve's decision in the 2022 film to style the ornithopter on a dragonfly (rather than a bird as in the novel or a housebrick as in the 1980s Lynch film) was inspired and to see this rendered in Lego is simply brilliant.
One question: is there a passenger compartment behind the cockpit (i.e. between the wings) or is it all Technic gubbins to make the wings work? Thoughts anyone?
I look forward to the Spice Harvester, Carry All, Sandworm, Atreides Frigate and Heighliner all at minifig scale!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Baron is bad enough but what Paul does....scheesh (avoiding any spoilers here). Not a lego-friendly character.

Gravatar

Gravatar

Gravatar

Really sad it doesn't incorporate a sandworm breaching as part of the display but still looks great!

EDIT: although WTF with the Minifigures selection. Very odd.

You’re thinking of the smaller craft Paul and Jessica, his mother, pilot through the sandstorm later in the film. The set’s color scheme is very faithful!

One color choice I’m not so fond of is Baron Harkonnen’s skin tone: in the film he’s a sickly pale. I hope Lego at least seriously considered white or light bley before settling on the standard light nougat.

Gravatar
By in United States,

THE SPICE MUST FLOW!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I am not one to mention it every time it happens but the red and blue technic parts are an eyesore here and make it look like a fan design of one or two weekends rather than consumer product with hundreds of hours of work behind it. Especially the many strange shapes of the landing gear and around the blade parts, it is far from perfect or clean. I hope I can fix the shaping and definitely will change the pins and axles for black parts. This is simply going too far, especially since the black version is so prevalent.

The figures are great except for Chanis hair which should have also finally been used as an opportunity for an untidy ponytail-esque bun but at least they finally did a man bun although it is a bit tall. One of the bald evil soldiers should have definitely been in here though, it feels strange with just Harkonnen just kinda chilling there with everyone.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

It's cool but not the most nostalgic Dune vehicle to me , especially in terms of the old Westwood era RTS games (Dune 2 , Dune 2000, Emperor Battle for Dune).

However, I do realise with the books, movies, and even recent Spice Wars game, there's renewed interest in it.

Dune had 2 video games in 1992, Dune (Cryo Interactive) was a story game I never played.

Dune 2 (Westwood) also released 1992, but was not a sequel or anything, but a seperate game, basicly one of the first RTS type of games, which formed the basis for many future RTS games (namely Warcraft Orcs and Humans 1994 (Blizzard Entertainment), Command and Conquer 1995 (also Westwood), onwards.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I like Dune (the book), though it's a long while since I've read it, or any of the sequels. I would have been tempted buying this potentially. But to be honest, to me it looks very, very grey and rather not interesting. The flight mechanism might be cool and possibly fun to build, but I think I pass.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have only witnessed this in the trailers. I have yet to watch the movie. I'll have to check it out sometime. The set itself looks neat, but at that price I'll likely have to skip it since I am not attached to it. The figures look fun though and I do like new prints, so I may look into some of them.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This looks really cool and I would probably get it if I knew what Dune is. Can someone please explain to me the plot? It looks very dystopian so I’ll probably like it but like I said I have no idea what Dune is.

Gravatar

Wow, I like this, but it's now clear that I didn't need to get 76216 for Whiplash.

By in United States,

Duncan Idaho! Why’d they put that loser in this? All the guy does is _die_! Eh, it does give Jason Momoa a second minifig, along with DCEU Aquaman.

@missedoutagain:
Normal minifig, long dress. In the Lynch film, he’s the guy with all the blisters, the black rubber fetish wear, and who looks like he at two other people. In the Sci-Fi Channel miniseries, he’s the guy who ends up living inside the mind of Paul’s sister in the second miniseries (he was about the least memorable cast member, so that’s all I can recall about him).

@WizardOfOss:
If you mean the adventure game that came out first, they did have ornithopters, but they looked different. They were how you initially traveled from one location to another. Or rather _IT_ was how you travelled, since you only got one, and it stayed wherever you left it. If you ended up in a different location, it was a long walk back. Later in the game, you learned how to summon sandworms, and could just hail a ride anywhere, anytime, and the poor ornithopter quickly gets abandoned.

If you’re talking the Dune II real-time strategy game, a version was probably in that, too, but I hated the game and don’t remember much about it.

@TheOtherMike:
No, but I was thinking it’d be cool if they released a grudge match set featuring a 3-way battle between brickbuilt sandworm, Balrog, and rancor.

@Skut:
I’m waiting for a minifig-scale titular character from the fourth book…

I had high hopes for this, and when I first saw it I didn't care for it at first, but after watching the video of the functionality it's pretty clear that this is at its core a Technic set, and looking at it through that lens it's pretty damn good. Yes, if anything Star Wars borrows more from Dune than anything. The spice, the Empire, the Weirding Way of the Bene Gesserit, etc.

But Star Wars is tonally very different, it is an action adventure story with a traditional heroes journey. Dune I don't feel is properly described with "dystopia" which feels more like 1984 or a modern Young Adult novel (if you want "Dune but Dystopia" Warhammer 40K is a better match). Dune is properly like a Greek Tragedy. The interplay of fate, faith, family, politics, and greed which push good people to do terrible things.

Oddly enough the easiest comparison to Dune on a Lego website is "Bionicle in 2009." Bionicle shockingly owes a lot to Dune for its final years.

They are indeed. Mike Psiaki mentions in the presentation they were the limiting factor for the scale of the model. They are ~40 modules long, significantly bigger than the ones on the Technic Helicopter "

They are 48 modules long and lighter than the Technic Helicopter ones. He also stated that the front windscreen is new and is supposed to be a call back to the old Jedi Starfighter windscreen.

If brick built the designer said it'd be too heavy to do the flapping play feature he incorporated into the model. It's quite effective if you've seen the video. One single piece for each blade molded is much lighter than brick-built.

Really veering off topic but first;

1) The parent company of Star Wars is Lucasfilm. LucasArts was the video game division of that company and had no complete control over the Star Wars canon.

2) "Legends" is not destroyed. While not canon anymore, you can still go to a bookstore and buy almost any book from that era still kept in print. If anything the only thing in Star Wars canon that is destroyed is George's own original films, which have been vaulted since 2004 and haven't had a wide release since in favor of the Special Editions.

3) I am going to sound really smug saying this... but if you are a huge Star Wars fan who doesn't know what Dune is it is probably time to expand your sci-fi and fantasy horizons. The works of classic Western and Samurai films (especially Kirosawa), World War 2 history, the Joseph Campbell's heroes journey, Asimov's Foundation, Buck Rodgers, Flash Gordon, and Dune will teach you more about Star Wars than Star Wars can sometimes say about itself.

Spot on. I'd also add to your list Edgar Rice Burroughs A Princess of Mars. Many of those Barsoom books influenced Lucas.

I already know that Star Wars was based off the Cold War and had several scenes that were based off of dog fights from WWII. I also got into Star Wars from my Dad and my Uncle and nobody in my family has mentioned Dune.
I know the parent company of Lucas’s Star Wars is LucasFilm and after Disney bought LucasFilm, ILM, LucasArts and Skywalker Ranch they destroyed LucasArts and gave the Star Wars game rights to EA. I truly believe that the Star Wars games such as Dark Alliance, KOTOR and the Force Unleashed is far more canon than any of the shows and movies that Disney has made since 2012.

This is a surprising set on many fronts. First, the fact that Dune is getting a LEGO set at all. It wasn't a license I would have ever expected LEGO to have. Second, the relatively inexpensive price point for what seems to be (at least for now) a one-off exclusive set. I haven't seen either of the movies yet (although I did just read the book) so I'm not sure if this is something I'll pick up or not, but it's definitely very cool for people who are big fans of the franchise.

@Endermen39:
Basically, back in the 60’s Frank Herbert wrote what was shaping up to be The Lord of the Rings for sci-fi. And then he died. What I’ve heard is that it was supposed to be a trilogy in front, a lone “bridge” novel in the middle, and a trilogy to conclude the story. So, seven novels, each one more paper-weighty than the last. He finished six (later, his son would team up with perhaps the most reviled writer of EU SW novels to “finish” the main story, albeit basically ignoring every shred of evidence that fans had dug out for decades regarding how the story was supposed to end, before moving on to shoveling out 2-3x more prequel novels than the original author had written to begin with).

Dune is set something like 10,000 years in Earth’s future, after humanity has spread across the skies. Skynet basically happened, so computers, and AI, are banned across the known universe. Humans are trained to serve in their stead. Melange (the spice) enables the human mind to become far more powerful, allowing people to do crazy things like control their voice in a way that makes it impossible to disobey them, or communicate with telepathy, or see into the future and selectively breed people in a form of eugenics. Or fold space to make interstellar space travel fast.

Problem is, spice only comes from one world, and whoever controls it has incredible wealth and power. Problem is, there’s an Emperor who gets jealous when people are more powerful/more loved/more wealthy than he is (and no idea why he doesn’t just move there his damn self). Problem is, sandworms also like to eat anyone and anything that disturbs the spice, including the harvesters used to mine the stuff. Actually, they’ll eat you if you just happen to walk by some spice. Or really anywhere they can reach you, even if there’s no spice nearby.

Noble Houses rule entire planets at this point. Several powerful guilds/factions, three Houses (Atreides, Harkonnen, and Corrine), and a bunch of rebellious nomads all get thrown together in a struggle to make sure the spice flows. Or water. Or blood.

Good point, thank you. I was in a rush to publish earlier and did not spot that mistake.

As for hiring a proofreader, I think LEGO is starting to recognise that need, but I also get the impression that press releases and books are finalised surprisingly late, which makes it very difficult to involve a proofreader.

Herbert doesn't try to keep Paul as a sympathetic character. He always intended Paul's arc to go from hero to villain.

Also, I don't think I've seen a LEGO set with this long of a lag time between pre-order and when it ships. It makes me think this will be a super-limited release.

Besides the six official books, and all his son’s fanfic, there have been three notable attempts to put the story on film. The first was David Lynch, who threw out a bunch of the workings of the story, made a really cool film…but is largely reviled by hardcore fans of the books for all the stuff he (rather intentionally) got wrong. Cast was great (except Piter, who I’m pretty sure was stoned on the pile of drugs he paid to get the role when he performed the role). Production quality was, at the time, also great. Stuff just didn’t look, or work, like the books said they should. Key plot elements were skipped. Or reinvented. Or stuff was thrown in that had no basis in the original text. Notable for featuring Kyle McLachlan, Sir Patrick Stewart, and Sting (the musician).

Then Sci-Fi Channel (before changing their name to SyFy) gave it a shot. They made a miniseries. Cast was…not as great (except for Piter, who could have been cast with a lobotomized turnip and been an improvement). Look…made a lot more sense, but had a noticeably smaller budget. There was weird use of colored lighting to convey subtextual information to the audience (I can’t complain, since I’ve done the same for a college play…and it’s also been done in The Matrix, and various other films). It’s more faithful to the story, and covers a lot that was skipped, or rushed, previously.

They also got good enough viewership to greenlight a second miniseries that combines the second and third books. Not as great as the first one (but neither were the books it was based on), but it’s notable for James McAcoy, and perhaps the scene-chewingest performance Susan Sarandon has given where she plays the youngest sister of a character played by someone 27 years her junior. Just a terrible casting choice.

The new version split the first book into two films. Big screen budget, but also a longer runtime that allows the story to progress rather than hurry. Of course, we’ve only seen half at this point, but it’s easily to e superior of either previous attempt. I kinda hope they move forward with the other books, but I’m not sure how they should deal with the lack of a true seventh novel to conclude the story. I kinda hope they’d loop in the fan community to correct some of the more egregious blunders (which are big enough I’ve heard of them, even though I stopped reading when there were only six books total). But, first book is by far considered the best, and it will soon have the full epic presentation it deserves.

I’ve never heard anyone suggest SW was based on the Cold War before. It’s certainly been compared to WWII-era Germany, but that’s what led into the Cold War.

The dogfights used WWII dogfight footage to model the movements because that was widely available, and not much else was at the time. These days, it’d probably have been patterned off of something post-1977. But you have to understand, prior to Ep4, _NOTHING_ in the sci-fi genre showed good space battles. Spaceships were suspended with wire and photographed from the side. Amazon Women on the Moon pokes fun at this, with a rocket ship flying horizontally, embers falling towards the bottom of the screen, smoke rising towards the top, and after one object explodes you see the leftover bit connected to the wire bouncing around on-screen.

The constant unfaithfulness to the fan community and the original plot reminds me of what Rian Johnson did to Luke Skywalker, completely ruined the character because he felt like he had to unravel Luke’s character and all of the other nonsense that was already established in the original trilogy. Not to mention that be mad Luke this sad old man who lost all faith. He literally believed that his father would turn back to the light and was trying to rebuild the Jedi order after the fall of the empire. The thing that probably bugs me most about Rian’s interpretation of Luke is the only reason why his nephew fell to the dark side is because Luke tried to kill him because he felt a presence of the dark side in Ben Solo.

Yeah Billions is more accurate to be completely honest. It is one of the more shocking scenes of Dune Messiah especially with how Stilgar is so adamant that "Hitler was such a n00b" while Paul has this dawning horror of what his life's work has done in that he has become infamous through-out the galaxy.

The thing that makes it so great is that from one angle one can still argue Paul is THE hero. It is a book series about "the path to hell paved with the best intentions" and from a classical hero's stand point Paul is justified in his plot to get revenge on the Harkonnens and the Emperor and usurp their claims. Dune is just intelligent enough to realize though that it can explain how terrifying the idea of the "good guys" winning can be showing the full horror of such an absolute victory leading to a galaxy spanning jihad is.

There are discussions that the new films will be a trilogy with Dune Part 1, Part 2 then Messiah. So I am very excited to see how that gets adapted, since it feels like Messiah would make a dark end to the "trilogy" if that is the film series we end up getting.

Yeah I do ignore everything that is rushed out by Disney. Lucas was actually working on a Sequel Trilogy around 2009-2010 but decided to sell Star Wars because he wanted to raise his daughter and build a museum.
The guy who actually talked Lucas into selling Star Wars said Disney would make Lucas’s sequels but soon scrapped them and gave the company to Kathleen Kennedy (we all know how that went).

Lucas’s trilogy was supposed to be about the daughter much like how the prequels were about the father and the original was about the son, Luke trying to recreate the Jedi order and Leia recreating the Republic. The Remnants of the empire started their own gangs. Maul would return similar to his appearance with the spider legs in clone wars, and his apprentice would be Darth Talon, together they would unite the underworld.

I’m horrible at explaining things. Here’s a 20 minute long video that basically says what I summarized:

Entirely agree. Just a difficult thing to pull off in cinemas where protagonists are what studios crave to invest. Good reason for making films of the start of the series but not seeing it through to the end (if the series ever does properly come to an end without subsequent authors adding more books that is).

Imagine this is a fairly niche lego release so imagine it will have a limited run.

Would like a lego sandworm & harvester though (just not at the same scale as the ornithopter obviously).

You know that Kathy was selected by Lucas as his successor right? She has a long career that predates Star Wars particularly working with George's friend Steven Spielberg & George on Indiana Jones, along with Spielberg productions such as Back to the Future, An American Tail, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Hook, Tiny Toons Adventures & Animaniacs, Schindler's List, Jurassic Park and Lincoln (sure she worked on the Avatar the Last Air Bender movie as well but not everything can be a hit I guess).

I know that the YouTube grifter gallery loves to pretend Kathleen Kennedy was some sort of malicious ooze that came out of nowhere to "steal, rob and destroy Lucas's vision" but she is frankly one of the most accomplished producers in the industry, even without counting the Star Wars stuff (which for as much as the sequels are maligned we have to also fairly consider other projects under Kathleen's tenure such as the "freaking Peabody Award winning" Andor). I agree the sequels are a hot mess, and some of that blame lands on Kathleen as producer, but to be impartial we need to recognize there is a huge grift culture of YouTubers who have made her a scape goat in clickbait tabloid videos. She is an easy name to pin hate on especially with absurd rumors of some sort of "Lucasfilm civil war" but looking at the big picture reveals that she certainly isn't the incompetent rube YouTubers make her out to be.

Let's be honest as well, had Lucas made his own sequel trilogy ideas people would have hated it. As angry as people are towards the sequels, it is still only a minor fraction of the "knives out" attitudes the fandom had towards George himself during the prequel trilogy. People HATED George for those films and it has only been in this post "The Clone Wars" era that rose tinted goggles have begun to re-asses the prequel trilogy as a net positive for the franchise.

You know that Kathy was selected by Lucas as his successor right? She has a long career that predates Star Wars particularly working with George's friend Steven Spielberg & George on Indiana Jones, along with Spielberg productions such as Back to the Future, An American Tail, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Hook, Tiny Tunes Adventures & Animaniacs, Schindler's List, Jurassic Park and Lincoln (sure she worked on the Avatar the Last Air Bender movie as well but not everything can be a hit I guess).

I know that the YouTube grifter gallery loves to pretend Kathleen Kennedy was some sort of malicious ooze that came out of nowhere to "steal rob and destroy Lucas's vision" but she is frankly one of the most accomplished producers in the industry, even without counting the Star Wars stuff (which for as much as the sequels are maligned we have to also fairly consider other projects under Kathleen's tenure such as the "freaking Peabody Award winning" Andor).

"

I actually really like the Prequels. Sure the writing and editing was horrible but the idea was there. It was about the father much like how the original was about the son. I remember reading when the phantom menace came out Marcia Lucas, George’s ex-wife who edited the original trilogy, cried in the parking lot after the movie finished because of the horrible editing and writing. Lucas often viewed writing as a chore but he was great at coming up with ideas. He would often have a team of writers working on one script.

I will admit that the first 2 prequels were bad but then the sequels came along and made everyone forget about how poor the prequels were. The Revenge of the Sith redeemed the first 2 prequels as well. Without those factors and if you look past the terrible writing the prequels were actually really good, they introduced characters such as Maul, Qui Gon and Dooku along with Lucas’s favorite character Jar Jar Binks.

You also have to take in mind that the Prequels were one of the first movies with entirely digital special effects and Jar Jar was the first digital special effects character.

Exactly. Can change the 'M' to a 'B' in 'Millions'. Going to get interesting to see how the films treat the later books. The initial book has a classic protagonist ... later books have some navigating to do to keep him as a sympathetic character (navigating pun intended). "

Yep, Lego does is often. Look at how they keep making Anakin figures. Even though he killed kids. All those young Jedi's in training.

Welp, I just pre-ordered at Target for $149.99. Maybe I’ll get lucky and they won’t raise the price before shipping in February. However, their preorder policy seems to say that you’ll get the price in effect at the time of shipping. They spin it as “you’ll get the sale price if it’s on sale”, but I suspect the opposite is also true.

It's time for Lego to recognise adults as capable builders and produce parts that do not disturb the overall look of the model.

So I actually googled him, out of curiosity.... it appears he's from a cadet branch of the house of Bourbon, which is still the Spanish royal family, and so the title "Royal Highness" appears to be a vestige of this, possibly. Also, the title "Grand Duke" is superior to a mere "Duke", ranking equal with a king, so perhaps Royal Highness goes with that?

Either way, I'm pretty sure he's an exception, and neither one applies to Leto... although possibly someone should buy the Grand Duke of Luxembourg an ornithopter and ask him what he'd call it, just to check.... :)

Or water. Or blood."

That is an excellent description of the setup - before the actual story unfold. In the Lynch version, three-quarter of the movie tries to establish this setup. Then there is the action - just like the battle of the 5 armies at the end of LotR. (Even the fortress of Arrakis is flanked by a mountain range and is not too dissimilar to the door of Erebor - as a combat terrain.

The inverse happens with the 2021 film in a sense. While we do get some exposition as to why the spice is important, the stuff about Thinking Machines and the Great Butlerian Jihad is never mentioned at all. I did find this review on YouTube which I think establishes why the 2021 film made the choices it did, taking a similar approach to Lord of the Rings in narrowing the scope of the world to focus on just Paul's perspective and using visual storytelling to allude to other aspects of the worldbuilding. https://youtu.be/LVnEOW27vyc?si=QVg2kSFzMmjh3t09

Another interesting thing about the modern film is the input on the "lore" from Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson. I know those two get a lot of hate for their novels and extensions to the universe after Frank's death; but admittedly they seem to have done the research into how the world is supposed to work in their attempts to imitate Frank's vision; and stuff like the 2d20 Dune RPG also benefitted from Brian and Kevin's input into the "lore." What I am more curious to see is the HBO plans to adapt some of the Brian and Kevin books into a TV series about the Bene Gesseritt sisterhood... that seems a lot more fraught with risk since while Brian and Kevin can quote the "lore" like a dictionary, it seems their writing and storytelling is what made fans hate them to begin with.

Most of the basic setup is Cliffsnoted at the beginning by Irulan, isn’t it? Kinda like how Galadriel did the same for LotR. What I’m guessing you’re referring to is more localized world-building, through Paul’s eyes. It’s not so much the grand universal spread, but how stuff works on this specific planet. And a lot of it is stuff that Irulan would have had no business knowing when the movie starts, if ever.

@xboxtravis7992:
KJA gets a lot of hate in general just because his first entry into the SW EU, he said, “ooh, I know, what if they made _another_Death_Star_?” His Young Jedi stuff (which I believe was him exclusively) is actually pretty good, if you can get past the whole “being written for kids” feel of it all. I never checked out the Junior Jedi or whatever (Anakin Solo’s story, to parallel what Jacen and Jaina experienced in Young Jedi), so I don’t even know if that was him or someone else. But point is, maybe he should stick to tween fiction.

Anyways, regarding Dune, I’ve never read the After-D*U*N*E stuff, but the major hangup I’ve read about is that Frank very clearly hinted at the nature of the last two characters he introduced, which would fit within the entire story written up to that point. And then BH/KJA came along and went with an alternate theory that really came out of left field, as far as pretty much every other fan was concerned. So, unless they’re sitting on Frank’s notes where he specifically wrote, “Nope, it’s the other thing,” consensus is they guffed the landing. Animosity towards their conclusion has almost certainly tainted the reception of any prequel works.

@missedoutagain:
I’ve seen a sprinkling of articles that mostly just state that, yup, there’s a series in the works. Apparently they stopped talking about it once there was actual information to report:

@PurpleDave, yeah I remember the "Sun Crusher" in Kevin's Star Wars books being very absurd. It was not a great moment in the Star Wars EU.

I have read one of the Rush tie ins he wrote with Neil Peart for Clockwork Angel's though. Not an award winning book, but it was a fun breezy read that had a lot of nice nods to the Canadian rock trio's history. The Peart-Anderson pairing as short lived as it was worked better than the Herbert-Anderson pairing it seems.

@JPKuiper:
He’s got real legs in the film. They just don’t work correctly. Being that he spends so much time flying around, the long skirt is just a statement piece, like people who carve intricate designs into their prosthetic legs. It’s not like he has a vaporous lower body, which is what the ghost legs would represent. They also poke out in the back at the base, so they’d interfere with the drape of the skirt, which is already going to be messy since it’s going to ship flat and has to be given two 90° creases. In my experience, the bottom ends will almost certainly end up twisting, but maybe if it’s packed with a rigid backing that won’t be an issue in this case.

@Captain_M:
The mechanism is designed around eight, and is fairly complex, so I’m not sure how easy “-4” will be to achieve without looking like someone just hacked off all the extra wings on a mutant dragonfly. I’ve already built a large dragonfly, so I won’t feel particularly compelled to undertake this challenge:

I'm not interested in Dune (either the series of books or anything derived from the books) but having seen this video I think I will probably buy the set (assuming it actually gets released). As a Technic mechanism it utterly rocks, and it's not an unreasonable price considering the new pieces and the complex build. In the poll after the press release I chose "Maybe" because I usually want to see a Brickset review of something so large and expensive, but in this case just seeing it being swooshed around by its enthusiastic designer was enough to make me commit to a purchase!

Gravatar

@brick_r:
Now, now, let’s not get into the rampant Dutch clone brand scene.

Regarding delays, yeah, WW84 and Black Widow each got one set, which released “on time”, and was basically end of life cycle by the time the films actually landed. Minions wasn’t quite so bad. They did release three sets on schedule, but were able to delay everything else until the film finally came out. They also extended the run of those first three sets so they were still available during the theatrical run.

Where it gets real messy is when there’s nothing to drive sales during the product window. It’s been noted that the SW theme had slumps during the 2-year gaps between Ep1&2, and again between Ep2&3, because there were no films or shows to draw attention to the theme. When a one-and-done launches without the film it’s meant to tie to, how does that impact overall sales for that model? Is the model going to last long enough to link up to the surge in popularity that a film can represent, or will it already be retired by then? If the latter, will they then perceive that this is a theme that’s not worth revisiting down the line solely because of a timing issue?

We saw something of this sort happen with Batman back in 2008. The theme ran three years, and had been scheduled to conclude. Retailers weren’t really keen on the final wave because “kids already have Batman”. But they didn’t really factor in the massive success of The Dark Knight that summer. I remember buying double copies of the entire 2008 wave the first time I found them, and thank goodness I did. That was also the last time I saw them at retail, except for when I stumbled across the two minifig keychains at a later date (which, again, the only time I saw them at retail, and only three left between the two characters combined).

I like the design and the features. Great work from Mike and the rest of the design team. It’s clearly something they were really excited to get into.

I like the minifigs and I’m glad they chose to include Baron Harkonen; a nice addition and made me laugh! Overall, they seem to have done a good job with the graphic design for the minifigs. I think dark green would have been a better option for the uniforms of Paul Atriedes and Duncan Idaho, ideally with dual-moulded legs for black boots.

Overall, however, a fantastic set. Probably not one I will jump on immediately (budget and space…) but definitely one to grab before it retires!
