What is your favourite LEGO colour? Reds and Yellows

Posted by ,

The recent discussions about the use of olive green in 10326 Natural History Museum have revealed some strong feelings about the colour.

With that in mind, I wondered what everyone's favourite LEGO colours are, so we are going to find out through a series of polls! The 44 solid colours have thus been divided into six groups and the highest ranking shades from each group will be forwarded to the final poll, hopefully determining the most popular LEGO colour.

The first poll features shades of red, orange and yellow...

What is your favourite of these LEGO colours?

Which colour received your vote? Let us know in the comments and check back for further polls in the next few days.

By in Germany,

These are a weird set of polls to me, considering that colors are relative to colors around it. You might say "red" is your favorite color, but when surrounded by certain other colors, that red can either pop or clash.

By in United Kingdom,

I suppose it depends on the use. Favourite colour for a Natural History Museum Wall, may be different to one for a Duck, or a Car etc. Instinctively I thought Dark Red. So i'm going for that.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Sand red :/

Gravatar
By in France,

I do like the poll. Some colors are just more appealing to the eye!

Gravatar
By in France,

Flame Yellowish Orange is my favourite color ever, period. Even for non-Lego-related stuff.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Yes.

Okay maybe except for Dark Red, but only because it's often brittle.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

My nostalgia dictates that I must vote for one of the classic Lego colors. So red or yellow. I ended up going for yellow because it is the dominant color in several of my favorite classic sets such as 375-2 1592 and 374

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Black.

Or very, very, very dark grey.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I knew what not to vote: vibrant yellow (aka highlighter yellow). Such an ugly color.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Whats another way to say we have run out of ideas of things to post :)

Only joking the results are clear and interesting

Gravatar
By in Germany,

The new Reddish Orange from Megapolis is missing ;)

Not sure how these polls can help. It's the combination of colors that determine the likeness of a set and not just the main one.

It does still make me cringe a little when I'm a bit lazy making a connection, and trying to 'snap' it.

For some reason, brown doesn't provoke the same wince. Maybe because brown is so much more prevalent.

Nevertheless, I do love Dark Red. Maybe because of the rarity. Maybe because of the danger. Maybe because of how good it looks with Lime Green on the old Clone Wars sets!

By in South Africa,

It really depends:
Trains, 10233 Horizon Express Orange, off course.
Modular buildings, 10312 Jazz Club Bright Light Yellow (also in 70620 NINJAGO City), with a 10232 Palace Cinema Dark Red roof not far behind.

Probably since those feel the most 'real' to me?

Gravatar

What about the new red-orange for next year?

We are only dealing with current colours because those are the ones everybody will be most familiar with.

Also, these colour-related polls are not really supposed to help with anything; they are just for fun and because I was curious after many commenters mentioned disliking olive green when 10326 Natural History Museum was announced. A surprising number of people specifically mentioned disliking that colour, not just for the Natural History Museum, but in general.

By in United States,

I voted dark red. I also really like light bright yellow and surprised there’s no love for it in the results so far.

Blues will be interesting. There are a lot of nice lego colors in the part of the spectrum.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I really don’t get the hate that the olive green is getting… I love that colour and it looks great in contrast with the white pillars in that set. Can’t wait to get my hands on it!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Sand Red! But from the selection Dark Red, but it sadly has still huge color inconsistencies.

Gravatar
By in Croatia,

Only one call for Sand Red so far... ;-)
Dark red, despite its issues, my favourite of the bunch.
Vibrant, almost transparent, garish yellow has to be my least favourite colour this century.

Ah yes, the dreaded high-viz plutonium yellow. It has it's purpose in some circumstances but manages to clash with every single colour ever imagined.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wait there’s a new orange coming?

I already have a hard enough time with bright light yellow and vibrant yellow.

I love dark red. People claim the brittle problem has been fixed, and I haven’t had any newer dark red parts crack on me. But I have plenty of older ones. Still, I love the color and want more of it.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Dark red of course. One of my favorite Lego colors. (Almost) independent on how and where it is used :)

Gravatar
By in France,

Apparently a new colour, reddish orange ID 402 is coming in January 2024 so this poll may even be outdated in a few weeks...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Flame Yellowish Orange is my choice so far. 42099 wouldn't have been the same without it! Neither, to a lesser extent, would 42101.

By in United Kingdom,

I think the colour thing depends on what you like to build - as somebody who builds town buildings and aims for some realism, I voted dark red as this is a close match to a Victorian red brick. But when I am building vintage F1 cars its also nice to build in some bright / unusual colours for a change - it all depends on what you are building I think...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Orange my favourite colour, full stop. Not just in Lego, generally. So my vote may be a tiiiiny bit biased by that fact.

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

I am very curious for the brown round. Sand yellow, brick yellow and the many nougats. Oh, and dark orange.
I cannot choose!

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Dark Red even though I had to write to Lego several times that they were breaking in sets from 2008-2010.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Sand Red is better than all the options. ;?-?)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Seeing the pools, that's a whole lotta red.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Dark red looks great and I'm glad it exists now. But it didn't exist in my childhood sets, so I couldn't vote for it. Original red for me--the contrasting color in 6073,6067, 6041, and a few other Castle structures, a faction color for my Black Falcons' opponents (both the Crusaders and the Black Knights), and prevalent in M-Tron (which was my last major Space series).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ironically olive green is my favourite colour Lego make. Still I would have expected white or tan for a traditional museum look.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

If BrickLink were up and running, I suggest starting to compare the prices for various colours. Red is usually relatively cheap. Black bricks are often more expensive.
BTW: I voted "yellow", since it's nice and bright, widely available, and makes for nice trains and construction vehicles.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I once paid over $30 US for a single Dark Red LEGO piece. That was not my favorite. :D

Still…made for a nice pool of collecting blood for an Arvo Bros. Alien Chestburster.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Good ol' orange is just such a lovely shade. Very pleasant to me. Dark Red is probably the most USEFUL of the lot, but I kind of hate it due to not only 8 years of brittleness issues, but also the radical color inconsistencies.

That said, if it was on the list, I would have voted for Sand Red - yet another vote for that one here.

As a graphics artist there is no such thing as a favorite color. in the right context and situation any color can be the best color. I'm usually irked a lot more by the lack of harmony across different colors due to some uneven "stepping" between different shades and specifically to LEGO I feel that the classic colors are too "industrial", having been derived from standardized colors in the 1950s/60s/70s and some of the newer colors are too saturated and vibrant. That's why I prefer muted colors and pastels such as in this case Dark Red and Pale Yellow. :-)

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I'm surprised to see Yellow so low. Aside from the obvious minifig skin color, it also used to represent the sand in the old times when tan wasn't a thing, and for this reason it's very nostalgic for me, because I always liked the beach settings in Lego.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Vibrant Yellow is the best, obviously. I don't know why anyone disputes this.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Red. It’s a classic isn’t it? (So is yellow but not quite as classic)

Gravatar
By in Isle Of Man,

Not sure what a colour is or what a favourite is. Going to wait patiently for the poll about favorite colors so I can vote for flame yellowish orange.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sand Red

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Favourite Lego colours: yellow, red, blue, white, black - the original five (+ trans-clear). The others are just to add a bit of detail.

(but I think you have to add grey (and trans-yellow) in there because of SPACESHIP!)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Vibrant Yellow and Coral just plain hurt my eyes. I immediately swap those colors out whenever I get a set with those in it.

Gravatar
By in Panama,

Cool yellow all the way for me! One of my favourites.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I voted orange. I still think of it as "new" because I've been building since 1973. I still get excited when I see orange parts on the PAB wall.
And because of 70224.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

Keetorange for the win

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Bright light yellow? More like eye scorching yellow

Gravatar
By in United States,

Why is there no dark orange? Will that be part of the earthtones/browns poll?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Add me to the Dark Red camp. It's such a rich looking color.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Dark red. Yes, the color is inconsistent. And yes, I have to replace a few parts every time I rebuild something. I still love it!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I voted for Dark Red!
Nice poll, can't wait for the others :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I see a red door
And I want it painted black
No colours anymore
I want them to turn black

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Vibrant yellow

Gravatar
By in Germany,

My, favorite LEGO colours:
Trans-yellow
Blue
Light grey
Black
Yellow
Red
Trans-red
Trans-green
White
Trans-blue

That's all I need for Classic Space up to Futuron.

Nuff said. :-)

It's a good color for military vehicles if that's what you're into.

PS. I like Olive Green, just not on the Museum….

Team Dark Red!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Keetorange is probably my favourite, but I miss the semitranslucent, pinkish dark red from when I was a kid.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is it a crime to say my favorite red/yellow is the old dark red? I know it breaks a lot but I feel like the old dark red is darker than the new version.

Gravatar

Tough choice, but damn, flame yellowish orange is nice.

Dark orange will be in the tans and browns section, with the likes of medium nougat. There are a few shades that could belong in two categories really.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I like the "glow in the light" translucent yellow. There is more than one colour of translucent yellow, but only ONE of the translucent yellows actually glows when you place it under bright light.

They also make a "glow in the light" green too...

Do love dark red though

Another write-in vote for Sand Red. I miss that color so much and wish they had done more with it.

As a fellow graphic artist, there's definitely such a thing as favourite and unfavourite colours. Coral pleases me. Trans neon green sparks great joy. Highlighter yellow enrages, confuses and disgusts me.

It's okay to like and dislike things."

Yeah thats exactly my opinion. I voted for vibrant yellow as its the perfect colour match for blacktron II mocs. I recently started collecting parts in that colour to do so. I am more than xcited about it. In regards to the national museum i think dark tan as main colour and the olive around down the ground floor. But thats just opinion as well.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I can't really say I have a favorite here--my favorite is whatever color is appropriate for the purpose. Regular old red for a fire engine, yellow for a taxi, etc. I'm just thankful we have the variety we do--and it's just about right, too. Too many colors would also be bad. I'd say the current palette is "just limited enough."

That said I do love the earth tones--earth green, earth blue, and the dark red which I've always grouped together with them.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’d just like to take this opportunity to write a little piece in favor of my most desired new color, yellow ochre.

There is a glaring absence of any earth toned yellow color, leading to substituting dark tan, flame yellowish orange, and even pearl gold to try and fill this spot.

It could be used for foliage, masonry, landscaping, hair pieces, or really anything you want. Lego has Dark Red, Dark Blue, Dark Green, but no Dark Yellow? It’s a really strange omission and I will champion this cause passionately.

Give us Dark Yellow!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I prefer New Dark Red from 2007, when it was "old" dark red. It was a little bit brighter. That might just be my memory, too, though. My first encounter with the color was when I was six, and I remember it being more red and less brown pre-2008.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ok, but if dark red wins, I feel like we need another poll to decide which one of the infuriatingly distinct different shades of dark red is everybody’s favorite….

Eye-scalding yellow. But it does glow under UV light. Which isn't that surprising, actually.

Orange!
When I left my dark age, orange was a “new” LEGO color for me it made a profound impression. Even the ubiquitous orange tool was interesting to me. I get a good feeling about Flame Yellowish Orange, but the darling of 1993 still won out!
Orange glorious orange.

Yes, the color was reformulated going into 2009, roughly.

By in United Kingdom,

I like dark red for buildings, but then I also like olive green for buildings too.

Seeing how poorly yellow is performing in the poll, is this an indication that LEGO should ditch yellow skin minifigures completely? Or just an indication that asking people their favourite colour is pointless, as it clearly depends on what that colour is used for.

Gravatar

I agree with others that Dark Orange belonged here; sure it could fit the nougat shades as well, but its place is with its brothers and sisters.

I don't know if I would say it is pointless, but it certainly has to do what it is used for. I'm sure a lot of people consider yellow to be a skin tone color, and therefore not one they will pick.
