An odd set. Photos in promo images look very small, smaller than for example Polaroid I use. Design will be a huge dust magnet that will be hard to clean too.
Looks like a cool parts pack though, black tree isn't out of place next to old castle style sets too.
This just gotta be one of the weirdest sets Lego has ever made.....those holder pieces seem interesting though.
Such a strange set, both in terms of the concept and the design, particularly the colour scheme. Can’t decide if I like it or not!
I like the way it looks, but it really just is a big tree with a weird function. Missed opportunity not including a few minifigs to drive the point of a family (tree) home, as well as to make it more appealing to a wider audience.
This is one of those sets that'll be on sale for most of the year, and then be retired in December.
It's quite... Spooky?
Is it already April 1st?
I have to say, the chosen colour scheme is really ugly. Its an odd mix of bright clashing with dark. I don't recall the original submission being to mixed or unbalanced.
To me this looks quite depressing with that Fall color scheme
Looks better than I expected. But that base is way too colourful. It looks like the down part is Friends set and the top one is 18+ set. Strange.
I think it looks good. A creatively different concept that I'm pretty sure will find a place in our home. Finally, a proper place to stand the family sign figs.
Plus, a nice parts pack, so I'll likely buy a couple.
No interest in the set but I do want that new print butterfly...
Hmmmm.......... Looks like an odd little set. I like the overall design but not a fan of the colour scheme. The pics don't show it but are there green branches/leaves included in the set or just the autumnal colours? A bit dark and creepy looking on the front of the box. The holders are an interesting option but as another mentioned, they look small for typical photos. More like a business card holder :)
I am missing the 'No, that just looks weird' option.
Not my cup of tea.... Autumn foliage but spring grass? And what I'm guessing are bird boxes look more like internal construction points they forgot to add things too, and as mentioned above, the scale looks like you can only have very small pictures.
Think the base storage is a little pointless, and alot of the decoration parts seem superfluous. The clips seem like a an interesting part, but really can't see this selling well at the £80 mark.
I like the idea of it but I'm not sure if I like the set as it is. That being said it's interesting to see something new !
I think what puzzles me is that it feels to me like too much of a compromise. Like there's either not enough custom options (like seasonal ones, family accessories (baby stuff, diploma ,etc.) to adapt the tree to the family life), or too many (to have something very simple that highlights the photos/messages on it). Too colourful (photos could be lost in the colours) or too dark (dark tones not cheerful enough).
I like the colour scheme, but the tree seems too wide in comparison to the leaves which are not long enough, although that's probably to allow the photos to hang.
As a tree it needs improvement, as a family tree it doesn't really work for me.

Fixed, thanks!
Looks like an Autumn tree.
I am kind of surprised it is not a traditional green tree. Especially due to its symbolism e.g. life, growth etc...
The tree trunk feels oddly shaped to me - it looks like it gets wider as you get higher, plus it's very square. The trunk to branch and leaf ratio is off too.
It’s a strange set… but beautiful? I have no idea whether I like it or not.
I think I like it, and I think it will grow on me too.
It’s really rather nice, very different.
Quite unique in its concept.
Potentially a great addition to the Lego portfolio, depending on sales ofcourse
The Ideas theme exists for this very reason. I am happy that Lego is able to think outside the box to give us this.
I think I would probably just put this in a town build as is, maybe as the centre piece of a park?
The foliage was red in the original submission as well. It looks kind of menacing, which I don't think is what they were going for (?)

Except Lego didn't, it was an idea from a fan designer. It's the fans who are able to think outside the box.
Not a fan of the green used for the base - don’t normally tweak sets but will if I get this. As other said, that color splash is too much of a contrast. I do want to see it in a review or two first.
Interesting choice not to include any minifigures?
Still think there were more interesting and exciting builds in this competition.
I'm honestly not sure if I like it or not.
It's probably the closest I've seen Lego keep the final product to the original submission though.
I understand that Lego kept the colour scheme based on what was voted for and won but feel they should have come in and brightened it up.
Just a spooky looking tree.
Also think this would have worked better as a 2-D tree rather than what it is.
And where is the "Family" in the Set? The original submission was cute and included a minifigure family with animals, but this one is just a customizable ugly tree with a bunch of extra parts to push the price up.
Why is LEGO never able to create a good looking, correctly proportioned tree in any of the sets? They either have a too bulky treetrunk or a too thin one with very little foliage. And don't tell me it's due to stability reasons, because there are Technic axles and SNOT techniques for this.
Also, the whole idea of the original submission was to build a 3D family tree made of bricks to hang portraits on the branches to create a personalized family tree. What LEGO understood is make a customizable decor tree so people can hang stuff like "small photos, notes, ticket stubs or other paper mementos that mean something" up. Seriously? Did no one google "family tree"?
A bit spooky really. I think the autumnal foliage really clashes with the base too. I think it could work as a tree (with base mods) but as a family tree, it doesn't do it for me.
Still, it's quite close to the original submission which is a pleasant surprise!
I think not including minifigs makes a lot of sense... probably more sense than a lot of the issues identified in the comments already. If they went for the heteronormative husband, wife, and two kids, does that represent your family? I don't have children, but where's my dog?!

Those pieces were used in the Dots sets too, seems to be a recolor.
How did Lego know that my family tree is covered from top to bottom in blood?!! :[
Mirkwood.

This is exactly why they didn’t include figures. The set is supposed to reflect the buyer’s family. Lego is not going to include every possible skin tone, every possible hair piece, etc. It’s not complicated to see why they did this.
My main issue with the set is that I always forget how not fun it is to build Lego trees until it’s too late. Not this time. I’m on to you now, tree.
What a weird set, perfect for the LEGO IDEAS platform.
To me the term Family Tree means something entirely different. My father did ancestry research and tried to complete as much of our family tree as possible, meaning a physical representation of the history of our ancestors on a large piece of paper/canvas.
While I don't think this set looks bad in any way, I don't feel a need to own it either.
Not my cup of tea.
Not entirely what family tree means to me, but the concept is really cute. Definitely not the traget audience, but I like the idea!
Ooh look, a haunted tree!
I see there are different blossom/flower options but perhaps this should have been extended to the main foliage too.
My dad does genealogy, so he might enjoy this
Original at least used windows as FRAMES, it looked more distinguished and finished.
Also I find it weird that description says:
"Select seasonal tree foliage" when there are just flowers?
Really weird. But nice parts.
I predict this will be substantially discounted by mid- fall 2024 :3 like the foosball table.
Love that new butterfly print, but not enough to buy this set. Money saved!
$122 here in Sweden, just end the insanity
Our sig figs are enjoying a picnic under 21318 Tree House. It looks like that is where they will continue to be displayed.
A tree with no frogs?! This is an outrage!
If I put it in my vitrin, who will recognize it? Nobody...
Oh I get it, it's that apocryphal "Ugly" tree that some people fall out of and hit every branch on the way down do!
To think when Ideas was launched we got the genius that was the Exo Suit and the Caterham 7,now we get this!
As much as I LOVE autumn and autumn leaves, the red here is just too dark, especially with the black tree trunks. It would've looked nicer with oranges and yellows and a brown tree trunk, and it should've come with green leaves as an alternative a la the bonsai tree set.
A large, red and black tree with the title OUR FAMILY feels like a poster for an A24 horror movie.
The epitome of an Ideas theme set. It won't be for everyone, but I think I like it. Certainly not a joyous blossoming 'Friends' family tree, rather something quite sombre for departed memories.
Again with the black-barked trees!!!!!
How many trees have black bark?........NONE
A lot have grey though and surprisingly Lego haven't made any.

What about 10281 Bonsai Tree? I still think they should of added a bunch of frogs to this “family tree”
Not something I’d enjoy dusting I’m afraid.
I'll admit, even I'm a little thrown off by the color scheme. I feel the safest conclusion is that it's simply based on a concept or tradition that I'm just ignorant of.
Addams family tree
If it goes on a significant discount, I'll get it, cuz it's a fantastic parts pack for me to add to my Mirkwood forest
The base is a Friends set and the top is an Icons set. Does that target market even exist?

Well it’s the same colour scheme, so they can’t win really

Price is too much for just a tree, even if it is a family tree. Also, no minifigs? Not too excited about this.

That made a lot more sense to me indeed. It gave the tree a pretty clear purpose. Now it's just like a tree with some completely random stuff in it. The pictures on the box don't do anything to convey the idea either.
In the small image it looks like the top of a heavily worn toilet brush to me.
Alright, sure. Where is the family?

Submit that to the Ideas-page, and you can count on my vote."
Does Ideas accept admissions that include Scala dolls? I'm still writing the script for OUR FAMILY but it seems *mandatory* that My Dad is revealed as the killer in the end.

Are you… questioning whether adult builders can like bright colors? Because the only "Friends-ish" thing I see about the base is the decorative use of Bright Bluish Green, Bright Green, and Bright Yellowish Green parts. The other base details like the flowers, mushrooms, and lanterns are all stuff that would be no more out-of-place in an Icons set than they would be in a Friends set (as well as details that were featured in the original project).
In terms of target audience, I suspect the detailed trunk and foliage will probably appeal to many of the sort of buyers previously drawn to the Icons Botanical Collection or the Ideas Tree House, while the emphasis on cherished family memories calls to mind seasonal builds like the big Lunar New Year sets and smaller holiday vignettes. I feel like it would make a great gift for parents or grandparents, and would make a great centerpiece for a shelf or side table nestled among other family keepsakes,
Honestly, considering the usual complaints any time that LEGO makes color changes in an Ideas set, it's a little baffling to me that so many of the complaints in this thread are that they DIDN'T make bigger changes to details from the original project like the black bark, red leaves, and vibrantly colored base. In fact, the original project's base even used Aqua (a pastel color introduced specifically for the Friends theme) instead of deeper colors like Bright Green or Bright Bluish Green.
The biggest changes from the original project that I see (besides a bigger tree with storage for more varied decorative elements in its base) are the lack of minifigs and the use of photo holders instead of smaller photo frames. I imagine the former change was made so that the set could represent any sort of family (regardless of ages, hair colors, facial features, etc) without having to include an enormous variety of minifig parts and accessories. The choice of photo holders instead of frames was probably because the selected approach works for various small to mid-size photos, while the original proposal would have required photos to be printed and cut to a very specific size.
Parts-wise, the new 2x2 photo holder plate seems very useful! I wonder if it's a mold that was originally developed for the Dots theme before it was discontinued, since it closely resembles the photo holder brick from that theme, and also what other themes we might see it in later on. The new color Reddish Orange is used not only for these but also for useful recolored elements like the 1x1 flower plates and the 3x3 rings from the Sonic the Hedgehog theme. The 4x4x3 quarter cylinder panels in the corners of the storage compartment are also brand-new in Black.
One detail nobody else has mentioned which I find very clever is that the butterfly seems to be a member of the genus "Idea": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idea_(butterfly)! As such, it serves as both a touching reference to the project creator's Filipino heritage and a subtler reference to the LEGO Ideas theme.
All in all, I'm pretty impressed with this, both as a set and as a refinement of the original LEGO Ideas contest winner! It stays very true to the proposed concept while also making small changes that make it much easier to customize with different seasonal decorations, flower colors, or photo arrangements. Even though one of the biggest gift-giving seasons of the year for my family has just passed, I will definitely keep this in mind when thinking of birthday or Christmas gifts for family in the coming year.
Definetly not for me. Also I dont get these kind of non Lego decorations for photos too. Makes the shelf or house too crowded.
Seeing this is revealing how having all Ideas sets under the 18+ branding & packaging should maybe shift in the future. This seems very much like a product that isn’t overly complex, is family focused and not warranting the same treatment as more complex Ideas sets, Modulars, USC, etc. and wonder if it will ultimately further curb what is already likely limited appeal
A kite-eating tree needs a Charlie Brown minifigure.
Well that’s an easy miss from me. Saves me a few quid!! Surprised it’s made production. Haven’t seen such an ugly and pointless set for a long time. Lego need to be careful and slow down a little…
Hmm. Too weird for me. I don't hate it, but I don't think I'd even build it if I got a free one.
That being said, as others have commented, it's nice to see a "different" Ideas set rather than licensed properties.
Coming back for another look at this, I think the tree itself could make for a good starting point as a more fantastic set-piece. Heck, even just color-swapping the foliage, flowers, and horns (if not removing the horns) with, say, colors in the purple range, and you're already well on your way to a pretty mystical-looking tree. Then it's down a rabbit hole of part substitution and reshaping. Build some lanterns to replace the birdhouses, or use what I'm assuming are pinhole Technic bricks behind them as outlets for something. Water, smoke, something more horror-oriented...
...Great. Now I really want the set. Fingers crossed for a sale, I guess.
Would make a great Scooby-Doo spooky tree or Haunted house tree
Definitely not for 18+.
More for a mom or pop to build together with their kid and talk about fun stuff they did when they were younger, family stories, etc. Use the elements to illustrate it. Could be fun for younger builders.
I just can’t see it selling well though except as a parts pack. Especially when it goes on sale.
I think overall the tree looks good. I may have to borrow some build techniques there for a forest for my castle stuff.
This was never a set that I was interested in for the design itself. I'm in the this is a great parts pack camp once the price gets reduced. No offense to the original designer.
Ray Bradbury's "The Halloween Tree," perhaps?
It definitely doesn't feel like a family tree. The original Ideas submission was infinitely better.
Colors are okay but the square middle part is just weird, even for LEGO , a blocky product by design.
Square and Tree can work for LEGO, but usually it's when it's some type of Treehouse, but even with square shapes, LEGO has corner and rounded corner bricks too.
I figure, the tree does get wider on the top to space out the photographs, and not so much going for a realistic tree, I mean 21318 : Tree House must be VERY succesful since it's still sold in 2024, and that launched even before Covid in 2019 which feels like ages ago by now.
Parts wise, this certainly works , but I think I'll prefer something like 71795 : Temple of the Dragon Energy Cores when it comes to a set focused around a Tree, at pretty much same price in Euros.

Shut the comment section down, TheOriginalSimonB won.
This is another good set for adults with their kids at a very nice price. Nice. …Will likely pickup in the coming year.
Comments on the colours do amuse me:
- Lego [approves idea with dark colour scheme]
- Lego [changes colour scheme to something brighter]
- Brickset comments: "Oh my god they've ruined it again, why can't they keep the original design, Lego Designers have no idea what they're doing, oh, woe is me...."
and now:
- Lego [approves idea with dark colour scheme]
- Lego [retains dark colour scheme]
- Brickset comments: "Oh my god, who would ever buy something with such dark colours, this looks awful, Lego Designers have no idea what they're doing, oh, woe is me...."
Personally I'm not 100% sold on the concept, I don't have a large number of small photos that could work with this, it looks like even Polaroid / Fuji Instax photos will be too large. But I'll wait for the reviews and see if it makes sense in real life.
It is not for me. I cannot see the point of it. Although that can be said for well over half of the AFOL sets they release these days.
Looks like one of those Chinese knock-off brick sets that flood Amazon search results for Lego. A barely coherent mass of bricks. Only it's three times more expensive than the Chinese knock-off brick set would be.
Another at -40% after 6 months
Decent sets of minifigure scale natural features are welcome and an ignored subject but this seems like a very personal and specific concept. A grazing black sheep and dark horse would have been inspired.
The Castle black trees looked good but this looks like a family ‘tree of death’.
And… teal. The current go-to liner found in few natural settings. With the black it unfortunately makes me feel ill.

Then you're looking at the wrong knock-offs at the wrong site. Otherwise they would be on a similar level as Lego, yet at a fifth of the price ;-)

Actually, the Dots version was a modified brick. These are indeed a new element, a similarly modified plate.
wonder if this set has most negative comments in it..
Divorcing this year.
No need for family tree.
My family tree is a Ninjago set to play with my 5yo boy :)
Better minifigures, nicer sets.
I think Lego is doing a really great job with Ninjago IP and sets.
These home decor sets are so booooooring instead.
Could this be the set that makes LEGO increase the number of votes needed for an IDEAS set to make it to the review process?? It seems that 10,000 is a relatively low and easily attainable threshold these days.
The concept itself was kind of strange to begin with, so I guess this reflects that.

This wasn’t from the standard Ideas process. This came about from a specific contest. So the 10,000 threshold doesn’t really have any effect.
Black and orange and red looks very Halloweeny. Might buy it to MOD it into a Halloween Tree.

Especially with the kite.
As I pointed out above, I plan to buy enough to remake Mirkwood. I just need the price to drop by half.

only care about the leaves, so that will be bricklinck or pick-a-brick.
The rest is a complete waste of an IDEAS-slot...

Let’s wait and see and not phone it in. ;o)
If the tree was white it could have passed itself off as the heart tree off game of throne.
