Alien Planet Habitat

©2024 LEGO Group

Two rather fun-looking Space-branded sets have been revealed at LEGO.com.

40716 Alien Planet Habitat contains three aliens of various designs, and two sections of their planet's landscape, while 40715 Alien Pack, which contains six green one- and three-eyed creatures, along with a female astronaut, could be considered an 'alien battle pack'.

They will be available at LEGO.com from 1st May, priced at £12.99 / $14.99 each.

View large pictures after the break, and if you need reminding of all the sets that have received Space branding so far this year, you'll find them all listed here.

Thanks to TheBrickPal for keeping the tags up to date.

At this point LEGO should just do like 50 sets a year for every classic theme. Medieval village builders or a make your own pirate ship in this size/style would print money.

I really am digging the Life on Mars type of vibes the aliens are giving too. These are friendly aliens! Not violent invaders or thuggish gangsters, but quirky little doods who love to play with the astronauts who find them. So real neat retro LEGO space vibes there. I also love that in a way LEGO City and LEGO Friends are both sharing this universe as well.

It is more NASA-Punk than the traditional futuristic sci-fi LEGO did in the "Classic Space" era (but to be fair, Life on Mars was also more NASA-Punk as well so I really dig the style); but it sure is neat. I agree cycling through other LEGO classic themes with modern tributes within current themes would be fun too (hehe, I could imagine an Adventurers homage with Johnny Thunder appearing in a City set).

I’m going to create an army of them to attack city research ships and bases. Then Lego will have to create a city space army to oppose them, creating another space war that hasn’t happened since galaxy squad!

That would work. But Lego does not understand that yet - we've just told them a bazillion times. Bricklink castles sell 30k copies in 12 hours (on every wave) - you'd think they'd understand: nope...

@pixelthedragon not quite sure if there are many "space everything" or "everything space" fans but this does nothing for 'Classic Space' fans. The lady in this set has a white suit - which is widely available on pab (the only colour available by the way) and - horror - her oxygen tank is black (a big no-no).

But let's not forget who this is for: kids will most likely love this. Kind of a mixel type of product but all in the same box. Basically, Lego had too much of part 30033/75937 and asked the designers to use up their stock.

Would it work? When the overpriced Bricklink castles sell out, that requires very little effort from TLG and nets them a pretty penny (and they're pre-orders, so the money is secured before any of the bricks need to be made). TLG taking the time and effort to make an actual Castle or Pirate line, and then waiting to get their money back....just isn't as nice of a bargain. If they can keep raking in cash from goobers who want to pay $300 for $150 worth of parts, why wouldn't they? That makes infinitely more sense than risking the time and effort to make a new theme, which isn't even guaranteed to sell (look at the last several Castle and Pirate themes)

And to be clear, this isn't a dig at TLG. They're going to learn the lessons that consumers teach them, and so far consumers have said "I will absolutely overpay for anything that's primarily grey"

By in United States,

I showed these to my 4-year old son. We both agree these are amazing and a lot of fun. These will be a hit.

The aliens also remind me of Mixels, but are much cuter. LEGO has totally made this the year of Space and a very good year it will be.

I’m particularly suspicious of the inclusion of a classic space figure (but with modern face). LEGO have already set the astronaut style for this space iteration, why go classic? I think that’s the main reason I don’t believe this just yet.

Don’t get me wrong though, I was around for original classic space, I love the new space theme, and I’d love if these sets were real and would definitely grab them. There’s a lot of cool parts here for a space themed moc I’m working on.

Really clever way to expand on the fauna and flora of the current space line. Giving the spotlight to what would otherwise be side builds.

I think the astronaut and rover are unnecessary thought. I can see how they make the set more playable on its own but would have preferred more alien stuff instead. You can get astronaut stuff quite easily right now.

“ whereas dogs are fish”

This is very funny to me because in Hebrew the word for fish is “dag”. There is a common joke among Jewish kids who are native English speakers learning Hebrew in grade school: “Mi is who; Hu is he; Hiy is she; dag is fish.”
It’s even been made into a cute Abbott and Costello-esque routine:

By in Brazil,

I i dont think the space girl and vehichule were necessary in the alien pack, i know the probably want to have some playability there, but i can see people creating their own versions of alien , even bigger ones, and having lots of fun with that, that playability enough imo

they could had included a alien minifigure there as well imo (its just 3 pieces in the end)

i really like the habit of this planet, with all those dark tan, dark orange, black , lavander... glad they make a set to expand that

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Considering we also got that Minion which was a rather elaborate joke, I don't see this being one too. And it shouldn't be, as these are two nice little sets with a bunch of interesting pieces and prints. Alien Pack is easily the better of the two, but I might just get both.

And when they start selling a million copies, or more, then TLG will probably sit up and take notice. But the Legends sets may have outsold these Bricklink sets, and they were deemed a mighty flop. Revival subthemes of Space, Castle, and Pirates have all happened, and apparently they weren’t thrilled with their sales numbers.

It’s true, the Force the jedi- all of it, it’s all true. Kidding aside, I truly agree with all this.

@purpledave how about a line? By that we mean: 1-2 polybags, 1 set at $15, one set at $30, one set at $50, one set at $70 one set at $120 one set at $170 and one set at $250. Not: one set at $550. If Lego set itself to fail by launching a one shot deal at a price point that will attract only 10% (made up number) of the fan base, they cannot expect anything else but failure. A line is providing something for every budget. If you do something with your mind half into it, you usually get a similar result.

As for the set: what kind of traction do you get with those wheels in the sand?

@HOBBES:
They've done lines, though. Legends was in 2002. Since then, Space has had Mars Mission, Space Police III, Alien Conquest, and Galaxy Squad. Castle has had Knights Kingdom II, Fantasy Era, Kingdoms, and 2013 Castle. Pirates has had 2009 Pirates and 2015 Pirates (such effort put into those names!). Just based on the frequency with which they produced them, I'd say Space did the best and Pirates did the worst. And Ninjago probably beat all of them combined.

Hey these are fun. I think sets like these will integrate perfectly with any of the new CMF 26 Space figures. I like the alien habitat, some great foliage parts in cool colors that will also add to the Avatar sets. Also am getting a No Man's Sky vibe with the colors.

I think the new Science Lab set would also go really well with the alien habitat. You could come up with a lot of redesigns for the tree inside the bubble dome.

More purple crystals! I'm quite fond of that old crystal mold.

Even as a LEGO Space fan, I don't think I'd seek these out to buy them specifically, but I still like $15 sets like these because they're perfect for pushing over GWP thresholds. Too often I need $200 to get a GWP, and the set(s) I want only add up to $190 or whatever. That's where these sets come in to pad my order and still get something at least a little interesting.

@Ridgeheart said: "See also: James Cameron's Avatar. I just don't care for the main builds or the minifigs, but the flora is spectacular."

I absolutely adored the Avatar sets, last year. They were one of the highlights of last year's Lego line (in a year that was already full-to-bursting with highlights). The gigantic alien whale was one of the best Lego models I've ever built.

And that was happening alongside the gorgeous Batman '89 sets, or Jurassic Park's 30th anniversary builds.

Gravatar
By in United States,

These both look like real neat sets, but I'm especially quite intrigued at the variation on a Classic Space astronaut. I think this is the first time we've ever seen the Classic Space helmet (at least, as used for Space) with a head other than the classic smiley? Very interesting with that and the black airtanks they seem to be doing an explicit variation/rejiggering of a Classic Space astronaut when previously all the modern ones had all been extremely straight-up classic (obviously it's not nearly as much of a reinvention as they've done for Futuron/Space Police I, Blacktron, M-Tron, Ice Planet, etc., but still).

Finally someone who understands and isn't just seeing things through nostalgia-tinted glasses!

Adult LEGO fans with deep pockets will gladly spend big bucks to fulfill their childhood needs of more castles and more spaceships, but they're really just a very vocal minority of LEGO's consumer base. An ever-increasing minority, but still a minority. TLG doesn't have to spend a lot of their R&D and marketing budgets to reach them. Just show them a picture of a castle, ask them to fork over 300 bucks upfront, and wait six months for it to arrive. The Bricklink sets are easy money for TLG for very little effort on their part. Why take a gamble on a $20 castle set at retail, while you're more likely to sell a Speed Champions car instead?

LEGO only has so much space at retail, and if it turns out police stations outsell any type of pirate ship or castle, which they apparently do, then LEGO will continue to crank those out. It seems historical themes in the toy aisles are something of a bygone era, with LEGO and Playmobil being two of the last companies still making those kind of toys. That is reflected in media, too. What was the last truly successful medieval-themed movie you can think of? Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, probably. And the last box office hit pirate movie without Johnny Depp starring in it? Hook? If kids don't see it, they're unlikely to play with it, and if companies stop making certain types of product for retail, the customers simply aren't there anymore.

I like them. Those are the same base plates that are used with the little side builds in some of the space sets like 60431 and 60432

To make a larger planet surface, the sets need to come with a set of 4x4 plates in the same colour to fill in the gaps between the larger plates

Don't know if it's the same in all of Europe, but here it's free shipping from over €55. And it's slow (or more expensive), and with rather poor status updates and tracking options. Lego is just about 20 years behind on other online shopping platforms....

Nah, we all know that Ninjago would completely destroy that theme, even though it has an extensive fanbase and amazing sets, just so they can keep cranking out their endless rehashing."

Ninjago hasn't done space...yet! Maybe they will get in on the fun?"

We've gotten the Land Bounty, the Hydro Bounty... I would LOVE to see a Space Bounty!!

These people have forgotten about the ones with different colored jetpacks like in 6702.

I wouldn't want to go on a space mission with someone who thinks an air tank and jetpack are interchangeable. ;-)

It's also incorrect, because each spaceman has an air tank in a corresponding colour. There's just one grey jetpack in there. I happen to have this set since childhood.

By in Germany,

The habitat is clearly the winner here. Also, Astro-Shirley needs a Garbage-Ship, now that's she's tasked with cleaning it.
