Official images of Ultra Agents sets
Posted by Huw,
Official images of the six Ultra Agents sets have surfaced on Amazon.fr, I believe, although I can't find them there.
As I said when I saw them at the toy fair, they do not appeal to me at all. What do you think of them?

I don't think this theme can be called the same as 2008-9 Agents, any more than it can be called Alpha Team. As far as I can tell, it doesn't have the same characters or even the same logo.
Hit and miss in my opinion. I like some of the Minifigures, but not others, I like a couple of vehicles, but most are a bit of a mess. The wave as a whole seems to make no sense whatsoever.
Think that priest in Poland had a point....at least the last Agent sets had a consistent style
^ They are all a bit of a mess and there's no continuity running through them at all.
I reckon my son will like theses sets but they remind me of some of the 'messy' Ninjago and Chima sets.
I realize I'm not the target market but it's disappointing to me that the vast majority of sets currently produced are either vehicles or include a vehicle. Either the good guys or the bad guys need a base that isn't on wheels.
I think some of the comments above are spot on - while a couple of the vehicles look really quite good to me, there's a lack of cohesiveness to the theme so far and a sense that these sets don't really belong together.
Worst theme of 2010's.
If I lived in America where Lego falls from the sky and into your shopping cart, I'd be a lot more optimistic while forming an opinion of Lego's more child-targeted themes. The minifigures are great, the vehicles look solid, and frankly I don't see how this theme is a mess. We've had an Agents theme before, and after comparing pictures, the new Ultra Agents is exactly like the old one. My guess is that Lego is estimating similar sales projections from the last time they did Agents, and if they're making money, then I give Lego my approval whether I'm interested in the sets or not. Sometimes I appreciate themes like this for the sole reason that they distract me from lacklustre Star Wars sets, the pell-mell Super Heroes, and an often 'hit-and-miss' City line.
Oh, and I'm glad the cheesy agent jumpsuits are gone....
I think the giant mech looks pretty cool, and the bad guys with the transparent heads are a must buy for me
When you check out the agents' vehicles they are all in the same colors and have similar features. You can clearly tell which belong to the agents and which to the villains, and the agents are the binding theme. To me the theme seems consistent.
I completely agree that there should've been more buildings. But on the other side I remember that as a kid I was more playing with vehicles and ships than buildings, so I guess it is well designed for the target audience.
I love Infearno Inception, but only because it looks like a spinner from Blade Runner.
They also released images of the gotg sets, official with no watermark!
Some of the minifigs look nice, but in general... I don't know. This theme gives overall very mixed feelings - quite similar feeling like when the monster fighters came out (same designer maybe?). I`ve never liked the agents/alpha team themes before either.
In fact it seems like an answer from TLC to Playmobil-agents line:

Most of these are pretty sweet. Not all, though. It's a bit chaotic, though, I'll give the naysayers that, haha.
The villains' natural disaster theme oozes (pun intended) controversy. Still, they look great, especially Infearno and Adam Acid. The heroes look all right as well, and the vehicles look really nice as well. The villain Terabyte in the HQ looked to have Lord Business's helmet mold on the box image, but not here. Strange.
I am really looking forward to these sets; I don't see any faults with them. The figures, builds, and parts are clever and diverse. "All vehicles" seems a thin criticism when those vehicles include: a tank with smashing fists, a walking crazycopter, and a flying car. Two out of the six sets include an elaborate environment, and I doubt the $10-$20 sets would reasonably be expected to have a building anyway.
These will not appeal to my 7 year old. The exception is the 99.99 set. I think he will like that, but as a theme it will be yet another fail for him.
Some of the vehicles look like they're powered by chi...
At first look I thought they were following a trans blue and black color scheme, and then I saw that white lab... What?? I agree with the posts above, the minifigs don't even have a badge to signify they are part of a team... Probably only going to get the Infearneo set...
I think the lab in Meltdown is the Scientist's, being attacked by Toxikita and defended by the Agents.
These sets look Awesome, I'm definitely going to buy some :D
@Huw: The agent's vehicles and tech are pretty consistent, actually. And gorgeous to boot. But each villain has their own distinctive style, which makes sense since they all seem to be independent villains rather than members of the same criminal gang, like Dr. Inferno's cronies were.
The villains in this Ultra Agents series remind me of the villains in the first year of Hero Factory, which similarly had unique color schemes and motifs. I think that is a great concept for creating a diverse "rogues gallery" for the heroes, but I don't think it works nearly so well in a System theme, since it's not just characters but also vehicles that lack a sense of visual unity.
Personally, I don't have an interest in collecting this theme, because as cool as the Agents vehicles are, they have a hard time measuring up to the outstanding 2008 Agents theme that preceded them. The way the new mobile HQ unfolds is brilliant, for instance, but its contents are not nearly as impressive. The old Agents HQ housed a spy plane, two ATVs, two boats, a prison chamber, a briefing room with a light-brick-powered projector, a communications center with two seats, and hidden missiles in the cab. The new HQ's spy plane is smaller, its briefing room uses a simple stickered panel rather than a clever projector, and it includes just one ATV and no boats. It does add a radar dish and a UAV/drone, but that hardly makes up for all the things the last one included that this one lacks.
The other Agents vehicles, like the bike in 70164 and the car in 70162, are more impressive and creative, but hardly enough to sell me on the theme as a whole. I suppose it's just as well. The LEGO Movie, Hero Factory, and Ninjago will be eating up enough of my budget for the year as it is.
I cannot see the "theme" here. "Hurricane Heist" looks like a Chimna set, the Agents HQ like a special forces police set, Infearno Interception like a super-heroes (Batman) set. The vehicle from the Tremor Track Infiltration set looks as close to a real tank like no other Lego has ever done. That is kind of weird, really.
Some of the minifigs are nice, though.
But I have to say, I am glad for every set I do not have to buy this year with so many nice ones available.
I cam to make the same comment about the Infearno Interception's Blade Runner resemblance.
Is this a late April fools joke?
If you mean the sets (and I think you mean it sarcastically), yes they are completely official. They do have a completely different feel from other LEGO themes, though. I hope and wonder if Infearno's flame is separate headgear. I think it would look strange without the armor, unfortunately, since it doesn't look closed at the bottom.
I think these sets look great! I'm usually Debbie Downer on new themes, but I really like the designs—it looks like TLG really thought outside the brick™ on this one. (I hope I coined a phrase there!)
So yes, there's little overt uniformity, but I see that as a good thing.
I liked buying the Galaxy Squad sets on clearance, but the uniformity in its designs was smothering.
Plus, it looks like lots of new parts and part/color combos!
I noticed that Adam Acid's destroyed half of the face features a nasal cavity, which is odd since minifigures don't normally have outer noses. I wish his green arm could have been transparent like Electro and Jek-14's since his head is.
Like the old Chima and Ninjago sets. They are crazy looking!! Wish they could have done stuff like the old agents.
This line looks like something between Tron – that black and trans-blue car looks curiously familiar – and Metal Gear – with a little reconfiguration, that tank and mech would be right at home. For those of us that like the futuristic look and the darker color schemes, these should be quite nice, not to mention rockets, blasters, and buzzsaws galore.
All taken, they're quite like previous Agents sets, but decidedly less cartoony.
After decades of nothing but bright colors and pastels, it's refreshing to see Lego continue to diversify their set designs and aesthetics. Lines like this always seem to divide the audience, and some have fared better than others, but there are certainly successes. Who can deny that the Queen Anne's Revenge or Tower of Orthanc are gloriously imposing?
There will always be the classics like City, Castle, and Space. Some people will continue to prefer those, and that's just fine. But these darker themes are a real treat for the rest of us.
Not for me but I do like some of the minifigures and always like new parts and colors on old parts. So let's hope there's some in this line otherwise I have no use for it.
I disagree, actually; I think they're actually quite interesting, especially the Hurricane Heist (I'm already imaging ways you could turn it into an even more sci-fi war vehicle). They're not my kind of sets, though. Looking over the older sets, I also believe that they capture the feel of the 2009 Agents theme very well.
I guess I'm in the minority, but I really like these. I get that half the vehicles are sucky, but as a kid I would've scooped these up fast.
All of these sets look very bland, to be honest. Nothing that really "pops" for me. I do, however, like that new suit print for the minifigures.
I think they'll appeal to their core audience (young boys) but there's not much of interest for us older LEGO fans.
I like the Tremor Tank (needs some modifications like a turret and treds) and the Inferno Interception.
Love 'em. Can't wait. Don't care who they don't appeal to.
The three smaller sets look fairly good, especially as one of them looks like it's from tron plus the big mobile trucks looks good too.
The others though, are rather meh.
This is just my opinion, but I like them. Among the Agents, I see a very clear trans-blue/black color scheme, and the Agents themselves share a uniform- a black suit, customized. The villains have a sort of "rogues gallery" feel. There's even the classic trope of the old villain (Dr. Inferno) coming back upgraded for the new season (Infearno). Then again, Agents *was* one of my favorite themes back in the day, so I'm driving my Bias Steamroller here.
Some cool figs here, more in the spirit of Monster Fighters than the original agents IMO. Truck based HQ has good play value, but less convinced by the smaller sets.
These sets remind me somewhat of the tv series Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. In the tv series the agents have a large jet plane as their HQ.
With these sets Lego has put the laboratory and some vehicles in a large truck.
If Lego had covered the truck in SHIELD logos, would more people be giving it positive comments.
I think I'll be getting the truck, not too sure on the rest.
That Hurricane Heist reminds me of something from Metal Gear Solid.
Really not feeling this. When I first heard about the return of a spy theme I was excited - I was in my dark ages for the last Agents theme.
But these seem too futuristic and Tron-like to me. And the vehicles are less 'realistic' than the older theme.
Miss the days when the smallest set in a theme was £1.99 not £11.99... :(
These sets look ... terrible. And is it me, or do they all look the last bunch of Agents-themed sets? Not a fan.
Where's all the animosity coming from? Honestly I find these sets very cool. I like them better than the older agents sets. The heroes vehicles look great, much like they did in the original series, although I must say this color scheme is better. Also, I have to say this truck looks a lot cooler.
As for the villains, they're the reason I'll definitely be collecting this series. Yes, the villains of the last series were cool, but you have to admit that these ones are much more unique from one another and each bring something different to the table. I think they each look pretty cool (okay, maybe I'm getting used to that dumb smirk on Terabyte's face) and their vehicles, though maybe a bit odd looking, can still prove to look pretty good. I think Infearno, Tremor and Psyclone came out especially well, and I think personally that Psyclone may in fact be not only my favorite character of the Agents theme, but I think he is one of Lego's non-licensed characters.
Plus I mean let's be honest, Dr. Inferno's team was cool, but they were also a bit boring in a way. They all had the same...feeling, to them, if you know what I mean. With these ones, I think all these villains will be working solo.
Not convinced yet. But then again I wasn't sure of the movie sets til i saw them in the flesh.
"Meh" some has interesting parts and that's it. Since I am not the target market, I don't see myself buying these unless super dirt cheap and maybe, just maybe, this appeals more to the kids. However, I am saddened that this has to replace the Galaxy Squad theme (at least for this year) because I really enjoyed that theme.
By the way, am I the only one getting an "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." vibe from this?
