New space-themed GWP revealed

Alien Space Diner

Alien Space Diner

©2024 LEGO Group

LEGO has just published pictures of a forthcoming gift with purchase. There are no details yet about when the 239-piece 40687 Alien Space Diner will be offered, but if I had to guess, I'd say it will coincide with the release of 10341 NASA Artemis Space Launch System and 31212 The Milky Way Galaxy on the 15th May.

It looks like a fun set but the most notable thing about it is the inclusion of an orange classic space minifigure which, until now, has only been available bundled with the DK book LEGO Minifigure: A Visual History. Unfortunately, though, it does not appear to come with air tanks.

View more images after the break.

I am not seeing any :(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I prefer GWPs that are remakes of old sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The green aliens from the new space line are expanding their job portfolios! And size!

Gravatar
By in United States,

They don't have the right faces.:(
Also, I both those colors already so, I won't be getting.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I guess this is … funny? I’ll probably skip this one, and pick up orange space guy (girl?) on Bricklink later.

They’re in a building, so maybe the oxygen is complimentary?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

No air tanks and the wrong type of helmets... So close to being a must have set. Let's just hope they do a better job with the "new" colour classic spaceman in the forthcoming Ideas Minifigure Prize Machine set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm waiting for that classic space micro-build of a tram station....or something of that sort.

How so? This is the reissue of the classic space helmet. Do you mean it's not exactly the same as the one from the 70s/80s?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Is it the pictures or are these new variants of the classic Space helmet? They look slightly off to me

Gravatar
By in United States,

Such a missed opportuity to include a new color for the classic spaceman

Welp, I guess we'll get to vote for one on Lego Ideas soon (for the Minifure Prize Machine)

Gravatar
By in Italy,

why not include airtanks that are available in the pick a brick section of the shop?
Anyway, nice little set to get a orange spaceman

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I kinda like this.....but do they serve Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Why can't I get a Classic Space themed Advent calendar?

"Nothing's finer than being at your diner."

Gotta get this, and gotta get the tanks from PaB.

But, where's Dex?!

Gravatar
By in Italy,

it is not, it has a thicker chinstrap so it should be less prone to crack. Orange one i guess it only exist in this mold anyway, there is no vintage version of it: it should be the actual first occurrence of this part (or maybe it was the lego movie 2 set?)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It's free, it's not Star Wars, and it will probably coincide with 2 great sets releasing... Happy days!

Orange allready appeared in 3 sets 40512 71741 and 41754

Gravatar

They don't have airtanks so they can sit down at the table. They don't have airtanks included as an additional feature because it's a friggin' GWP, Kevin.

I'm pretty sure that this "smooth" version of the orange helmet (as opposed to the textured version from the DK book) debuted in 40512 Fun and Funky VIP Add On Pack.

Alien: Hiya, big stuff. Hi, dream. What'll you have?

Orange Guy: We just got a couple minute while we're gassing up. What's ready?

Alien: I can give you the space soup or the space special.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is adorable! I wonder if it is inspired by the diner in Spaceballs...

Gravatar
By in United States,

While it's understandably frustrating that they didn't throw in airtanks for each minifigure, in the US, the following parts are readily available at LEGO's online Pick-a-Brick:

MINI OXYGEN BOTTLES | Element ID: 6295186 | Design ID: 3838 | $0.21 (orange tanks)
MINI OXYGEN BOTTLES | Element ID: 6268849 | Design ID: 3838 | $0.16 (white tanks)

...that latter of which can also be had for cheaper on Bricklink in "new" condition.

White Guy: I'll have the c******e.

But really, shouldn't the Orange Guy be named "Barf"?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Even if it doesn't have the air tanks I do like the idea of this set.
Maybe build a nice exterior around it, similar the ground floor of 10260 Downtown Diner.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the choice of bright orange Minion mohawks as peeled oranges in the blender. I am still amazed there isn't a better design part(s) for sandwiches/burgers.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Finally a GWP! Now I can order some of the pricey sets I've wanted!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very Pizza Planet-like!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The chef is clearly a plus sized version of the ones in 60429, 60430 and so on. Thereby adhering to the old adage that you can't trust a skinny chef
The food must be alright, because the diner clearly has four stars

They coald have made a coat rack for airtanks

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

While this looks interesting, it seems like a missed opportunity to update a classic spaceman colour like black or blue instead of reusing the white spaceman again

Gravatar
By in United States,

How are they supposed to breath without the air tanks?!

Gravatar
By in United States,

It’s possible (if unlikely) this will actually have the tanks and that they just aren’t pictured, and it’s also possible (and likelier) the purchase threshold will be too high for me to get one anyway, but just in case, I’m glad the PaB order I just placed included some extra orange and white tanks I threw in as a lark.

By in Poland,

A spaceman without air tanks is a dead spaceman.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Too bad it's not the even rarer purple spaceman, which required an inane scavenger hunt to create. The orange one came in a book that you could just buy.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

I need the torso in black, blue and green and the airtanks in green but I don't want old and overpriced parts; re-release them!

Plus the unreleased LBG airtanks and helmet (no, old gray doesn't do it for me)

I was also missing the green helmet but it finally went live on lego's pick a brick a few days ago (it'll still take some weeks before I actually have it).

And don't forget we had to dismember 2 torsos to get the LBG and purple ones ?? it'd be nice if they never do that again.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Harsh critics out there. This set looks amazing. Fun, inventive, a slap of humor! And space! My god, space! And a tentacled alien?? Yup. I'm in.

It's probably the POV. The thick chinstrap is designed to look almost exactly like the regular chinstrap when viewed directly from the front. From the side, there's really nothing that can be done to hide how beefy that thing is.

Maybe its my mind playing tricks on me, but the way the stars on the back wall are done combined with the thickness of the floor reminds me of that space kid bedroom GWP from a few years back. Wonder if this would look nice next to it?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@GSR_MataNui:
Might look a little awkward for a kid to have a bedroom right in the middle of a restaurant. Or for a restaurant to be located right in the middle of a kid's bedroom.

It does remind me, however, of a thing that happened to a friend when he was living in Japan. He'd gone looking for some highly-recommended soba shop, but didn't have a strong grasp of how to read Japanese. With maps and such, he did eventually find the place, so he opened the door and...walked right into some guy's living room while he was watching TV. Except, it really was the right place. Turns out the family lived in the back half of the building, and when the restaurant was empty, they'd just slide a wall to one side and hang out in the house portion. When customers were present, they could slide the wall back to close off the residence from the restaurant.

To make matters even more confusing, Germany is actually called Deutschland in its own language. And Duitsland in Dutch. An often misheard lyric in Tina Turner's Private Dancer is the part where she mentions Deutsche Marks (the former German currency), which to many listeners sounds as 'Dutch Marks'. I'm also not sure at which club in 1980s America you could pay with German Marks, but I bet the song's writer, Mark Knopfler, found such a place while on tour.

He is very wrong. Then again, from my observations, a lot of people who dress up in orange for sporting matches or official holidays like King's Day somehow seem to think 'Holland' is all of the country -- or are willing to to pretend so when it is convenient to them.

Also, it's a Seinfeld reference, which probably still has some relevance to it. ;-)

To be fair, for decades this has been a popular song at football: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBvLbFUN0MA

The word Holland works great for songs with alliteration and it's short. Holland also existed as a duchy and as a state centuries before The Netherlands was a unified country, and named as such, so I guess it stuck around with our neighbours. Ironically, the most successful soccer tune, at least in terms of sales, does mention The Netherlands in the chorus: We Houden Van Oranje -- and the tune is lifted from Auld Lang Syne. And yes, outside of the provinces of Holland the term 'Holland' is sometimes used in a derogatory manner.

Ah yes, I sang that song quite a number of times recently, during my vacation. In Japan they use that tune (a bit slowed down) whenever events are ending or shops are closing. It basically means "get out!" there. And I do get some weird stares when I sing along with it in Dutch...

"Holland" is comprised of two provinces in the Netherland (North- and South-Holland), meaning the actual Holland only takes up roughly 15% of the Netherlands by both province-count and actual size - but don't tell the residents of the Hollands this, as they will vehemently claim that they alone exist in this universe. To make things even more needlessly complicated, each of the Hollands does acknowledge the other, but only in terms of competition, largely in terms of footingsportsball.

The actual name doesn't matter all that much. "Nether lands", "Hollow lands", "Low lands", it's all to denote the fact that the country is built below sea-level. Whether you call them Dutch, or Netherlandese, or even Germans, it doesn't matter. The Dutch are a race of excessively tall sea-goblins, obsessed with balls, the monarchy, blackface and the colour orange. This keeps them distracted, and in turn, will keep them from kidnapping your children. Honestly, it's for the best."

But is it still a part of Swedemark?

Huh. Looking closely at the full-size image, the eye tiles do indeed appear to be stickered… but even for a promotional freebie, I’d be very surprised for those parts’ deco to be stickers.

Has there ever been a sticker for a 1x1 round tile? Serious question; I honestly don’t remember having ever seen one in any LEGO set I’ve ever built before, but of course that doesn’t mean it can’t happen. But it certainly isn’t typically the case. Right now, I want to assume the photo is of a prototype made using stickers, and that the final set will have prints, but I guess we’ll see soon enough…

Due to the tune's age and wide appeal, it's actually used in quite a few cultures around the world for different occasions. However, the original sentimental Scottish words set to the tune are by far the best and most genuine. The opportunistic André Hazes version is dreadful in comparison. :'-)

"An ill wind blows from a yawning grave, a low bell tolls. I was named thrice, and so my weary bones are set into motion again to resume my grim task.

By in Singapore,

I had 2 on the way!

Also, I thought the orange spaceman helmet is thin chin strap from the book but it appears same as in this GWP, i.e. thick chin strap?

By in Netherlands,

Fun set. I like the funky vibe

By in United States,

oh no, I paid a high price for the orange astronaut over a year ago and here's basically the same figure coming in a free set. Lego has specifically targeted me and retroactively wasted my money and it is time to make this the entire internet's problem. it is an inherently bad thing if more people have access to this minifigure.

Sets like these shouldn't be locked behind the "gift with purchase" paywall and instead should be normal releases.

"it is not, it has a thicker chinstrap so it should be less prone to crack. Orange one i guess it only exist in this mold anyway, there is no vintage version of it: it should be the actual first occurrence of this part (or maybe it was the lego movie 2 set?)"

Well,there is this https://www.lego.com/en-nl/product/a-visual-history-5006811

It's not the old one, it's the new one. exactly the same as the GWP one. The book one has air tanks and classic head, but new mold for the helmet. ;)
