Posted by Huw,
The one set you've all been seeking has been revealed at last!
10333 Barad-Dûr
5,471 pieces, rated 18+
€459.99 / $459.99 / £399.99
Available from 1st June at LEGO.com
Today, the LEGO Group, in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, reveals the LEGO Icons Lord of the Rings: Barad-Dûr set, inspired by the award-winning film adaptations. Now in brick form, the epic dark tower and Eye of Sauron model has many hidden story references from the Lord of the Rings.
Prepare to journey deep into the heart of Middle-earth with the unveiling of the spectacular LEGO Icons Lord of the Rings: Barad-Dûr set! With its imposing 5,471 pieces, this awe-inspiring masterpiece brings to life the dark tower of Mordor in stunning detail, packed with thrilling features and beloved characters from Tolkien's timeless saga. The journey through the dark tower continues with the throne room – which includes a compartment that opens to reveal a map, and a ladder on the top floor of the tower that can be moved left and right.
At the summit lies the Eye of Sauron that rotates in various directions and features a light brick to make the eye glow. There are also 10 minifigures, including Sauron, Mouth of Sauron, Orc, Frodo, Sam, Gollum and Gothmog.
The model is split into four main sections, with the tower section being fully modular. LEGO fans with more than one copy of the set will be able to stack this section to build a taller tower.
When purchasing the set between 1-7th June, buyers will receive a free Lord of the Rings 40693 Fell Beast.

Interesting.....
Finally, they have revealed the best set of the year!
Great set, but a tad underwhelmed by the GWP. Not as bad as the free Brickheadz with Rivendell, but still a bit meh.
Anyhow, day 1 buy for me I'm afraid.
Looks nice but that price . . .
We need some more reasonably priced LOTR sets.
This is going to make an amazing addition to someone’s Lego Batman Movie diorama.
Ooooohhh swweeettttt!!! (i dont have the space or budget for this :'(
Oh. My. God. The tower...the figures...the fact that the GWP doesn't have 3 exclusive figures to tempt the scalpers and isn't nearly as good as the rumours suggested - it's BEAUTIFUL!
Terrific set, although I was naively expecting a closed back… I guess the purpose of this is to combine it with 43222, right?
We thought LOTRs return was just Rivendell.
But all of us were deceived, for another set was made.
In the land of Mordor the Dark Lord Sauron forged in (not so) secret a master set, one set to rule them all
Very expensive and I'm running out of children to sell to the Dunlendings.
Sauron should have been the Avatar-style minifigure, with longer arms and legs! And Frodo and Sam should have their stolen orc armor.

Yes, the dark side of Disney....
LOL is that a Nazgul GWP? Probably could've just been a regular set, but ah well, what else is new.
Fantastic looking set, not sure I can justify the price but it's tempting!
Just wow!
That's another 400+ dollars added to the "get this set" list.
This set is really incredible though.
Why does the Fell Beast look so terrible? For $400+ to get, I feel like it could have been more than just an afterthought. I hate to complain about something free, but I wouldn't even pay money for that in a store.
That said, Barad-dur looks great and I will be picking this up, probably right away!
What are the built dimensions? Maybe I’m blind, but I don’t see them. Honestly, more exposed studs than I figured there would be. Idk, just not as good as I thought it would look for the price. Not bad though. Sauron is nice, some of the figures are me and generic, the Mouth of Sauron looks redundant. Hopefully there’s good stock of the GWP if I’m buying day one. I have all of the figures in the theme and I don’t wanna pay extra for the Fell Beast set because it sells out in 10 minutes!
1.) The build and interior is immaculate, even if I cannot see where all the bricks are going from the pics. The light needs a toggle to stay on.
2.) The Orcs and baddies look great. However, Gollum looks a bit off and less iconic than his 2010s LEGO version. Missed opportunity to use long Avatar legs and arms for Sauron.
3.) The heroes are lazy, inaccurate reuses that look nothing like Frodo and Sam from this point in the film.
4.) The Felbeast GWP is less than inspired. A few Nazgûl should've been in the set, if not the Fellbeast itself. (But better, of course.)
5.) Or LEGO could actually make smaller sets, like a proper Fellbeast with the Witch King, Éowyn, Pippin, and Théoden. The Brickheadz aren't doing.
I have been budgeting all year to buy this ridiculous set. So I might as well buy day 1 and get the GWP, but I am so disappointed in the GWP. Oh well, my disappointment in the GWP is completely erased by the awesomeness of Barad-dûr and the minifigures!
The tower itself looks great. A little squat but it is in keeping with the style of Orthanc. The interiors are reasonable too. It is obviously again very reminiscent of the way they did Orthanc, which works well for display and play features round the back. The eye looks very good.
In the extra images, there is a (clear) palantir that shows the White Tree of Gondor burning.
The minifigure selection is OK. Sauron looks great but could have had longer legs. It is also good to see Gothmog. The other figures are not so great. Gollum doesn't look any better than the previous ones, and Sam and Frodo are very disappointing. Why repeat them in their clean clothes for this scene? They are totally out of place although their new helmets are nice. Mouth of Sauron is a bit boring (but then, I have the original one) and the orcs are OK. The new torsos look good, as does the new helmet. The orcs with hair look like they are from Harry Potter and the one with the red bandana looks very out of place. Funny enough, I use the head of Kithaba from SW for an orcs head. This one with the red bandana looks very much like him.
The fell beast GWP is OK, but nothing special.
No sword of Gryffindor to destroy the jewelry horcrux? Lame.
LOTR should would come in smaller sets too, not just 400€ plus range.
Also, have been waiting for a Sauron minifig for a long time.. All I have to do is wait for someone to buy this and sell the minifigs online.. Don't get me wrong, it looks good, but it's just not for me..

They have the orc helmets, at least. See the set details page.
Staring at this a little longer - holy cow, that molten rock detail around the lower floors!
@ohrmazd said:

That certainly would have shaved about two books off the franchise....
Using the Dark orange & Brown colours around the eye to make it look like its actually emitting light permanently is great
The fact that LEGO revitalizes the Lord Of The Rings theme with the two locations we've never gotten before... it's just so fantastic. I'm hoping we'll get even more sets like this, even if they all are 18+. Orthanc, the Mines of Moria, and Minas Tirith are definitely next on my list!
It looks cool but I really expected it to be taller. At 32.5" it's only slightly taller than 10237 (28"). And the mention you can buy multiple sets to make it taller is laughable. Who's seriously going to do that when you only need the top section. Day 1 buy, but will be Bricklinking a height extension.
The next big LoTR set has to be a bag end remake right?
Has anyone done any research on average price set increase over the last day 5 years? It’s becoming increasingly difficult, if not impossible for many to be a ‘completionist’ in the hobby with set after set being in the hundreds
This set looks great! Going to have to pull the trigger and pick this up right away and get the fell beast GWP.
Really glad that I bought 2 copies of the 79007 Battle at the Black gate set back in 2013, built one and one is still sealed, they will go very well with this. Can't wait for June 1st!!!
@AgentKallus said:

Nah.
I am hoping for a Minas Tirith.
And I hope that burning white tree in the Palantir is a tease of it for the future.
The incorporation of brown and other colours to simulate light from the Eye is phenomenal, they're really upping the standard here. The tower itself could have been a bit taller, and for the price they could have thrown in a Nazgul or something instead of relegating that only for the GWP, but otherwise very impressed. Get outside my budget but...impressed.
The set itself looks fabulous. GWP a bit less so, but hey, it's free, so I can't complain too much.
Agree that the Minifig selection is slightly underwhelming. Sauron, his mouth and Gothmog look ridiculously awesome (and no, Sauron should not have gotten the Avatar parts, because that would just look.... weird). I really like the slightly more cartoonish Gollum. The rest is average, and it's especially disappointing that Sam and Frodo are the same versions as in Rivendell. They should look grimier and dirtier (but, at least, as confirmed on the back of the box, you get some Orc helmets to "disguise" them).
All in all, day one buy for me. Haven't been this stoked for a set in a long while.
The bets are on, in how many hours will 40693 be sold out?
HP and D&D GWP were sold out in 1-2 days, the FOMO is strong or lego is just has low stock.
Sauron and the Mouth of Sauron honestly don't look like Lego. Why? Their detail is almost absurdly detailed and too big for them. Lego honestly really should make a minifigure size inbetween the avatar and normal minifig size, would've been the perfect size.

How is it possible to be underwhelmed by a Nazgul on his winged beast?
Man, while the back is open I adore this gem.
Not a LotR fan, but after Rivendell last year this once again looks like a pretty amazing set!
That said,
"The model is split into four main sections, with the tower section being fully modular. LEGO fans with more than one copy of the set will be able to stack this section to build a taller tower."
Yeah right....who is gonna buy two of these just to use those small tower sections? Would be nice if they would just sell separate expansion packs. That's more what "modular" means to me...
The GWP looks a bit crude, not impressed by that.
Okay, but I adore the stickered tile that says "menu" with a picture of meat
WAHOOOOO thtas what im talking about! Look at those minifigures! That sauron figure looks custom. some of Those orcs are awesome they are actuall characters in the movie not just generic orcs. But i cant afford this :(
There is no excuse for not having Mordor versions of Sam and Frodo, although the inclusion of their helmets is a nice surprise. The set itself, I'm just not sure about.
I'm a bit relieved that the GWP build is so weak, because I might be able to buy it on the secondary market at a reasonable price. I certainly won't be able to buy the tower now. Even if I had the money, I have no idea where I could put it.
Just wanted to clarify for everyone: Nazgul are the Ringwraiths, Felllbeasts are the dragons. They're used too interchangeably and it makes me annoyed.
I quite like it, but I'm not sure if I'll get it.
Somehow I have too many unbuilt sets already. There's sets from ten years ago that I've not yet gotten round to building, especially the larger ones. It's easier to find the time in between to build something smaller.
It looks fantastic. The construction of the eye is so clever, and I love the use of dark orange around it to suggest the glow on the tower.
Fell Beast is okay, but a bit too simplified. BuildBetterBricks have a fantastic design available: https://buildbetterbricks.com/products/instructions-for-lego-lord-of-the-rings-fell-beast-display-stand
I’m not as impressed as I thought I would be. Definitely cool looking though.
Not an LotR fan, but this set is definitely one I'm adding to my very expensive list!
I like the gwp, I know, I'm in the minority in doing so.
Just not sure if I can afford it on day one. I have £230 of VIP points banked, but those are reserved for the Marvel Tower. Took awhile to get that much, so I don't know what I'm going to do.
It's beautiful! Too expensive for me. But it's amazing.
I love that Sauron exist along with the "eye." Popular misconception is that he is the "eye."
I can't believe I had to scroll down 40 comments before someone pointed out that meat was back on the menu.
My wallet and me just had a lengthy discussion about our relationship and we decided to divorce.

I had bought four of the black gate sets in 2013 and combined them together to make one large black gate. Yes, will go very well with this!
Holy sticker sheet...
Lools like two new shields for my collection!
Yawn. Wake me up when there are AFFORDABLE LOTR sets.
[sigh] another set outside my budget, will they ever release a new lotr set thats like somewhere between 100 and 150? i just cantaffort 400+ on a lego set, plsssss lego give us a smaller collectable set at a lower price point! plsssssssss!
I do love the tower design being so readily like 10237 Tower of Orthanc. And the Sauron minifig is nice but... like others have said, should be taller! I am really torn here and didn't expect I would be. Why in the world did they include a perfectly clean Frodo and Sam (and the Mouth of Sauron again, even though he wasn't in theatrical releases to begin with--he's getting a second fig???--should have been another Nazgul with Fellbeast, so you could end up with two on day-one purchase). There will likely be no other opportunity to have an end-of-journey Frodo and Sam, and, to me, this is just a shocking omission. It would have just taken some face reprinting and ill-fitting orc rags printing. I really thought they'd think to do at least this minimal effort. TLG, you screwed it up.
If they're going to adhere so strictly to minifig guidelines, I wonder if Gollum's eyes should have just been black. I scribbled over his eyes in paint and I think it maybe looks a little less weird? His eyes didn't turn blue due to corruption or something, and his head isn't black like some of the Sith figures with weird colored eyes so there'd be no issue with black ink on black plastic.
This has a very Targ GofT vibe. Really need Lego to start producing sets for that.
Looks like meat's back on the menu, boys!
It's going to go next to my 10237 Tower of Orthanc, which I have never taken apart since building it many years ago.
It’s as expensive as half a month’s rent, but I will be buying it day one, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Coming in at 5149,- NOK I have to say I’m pleasantly surprised for a change - I’d expected it to be at least as expensive as Rivendell, which is 5999,- NOK. This set looks like a dream come true, now I’m REALLY getting my hopes up for a huge Minas Tirith!
I don’t get it. I think it looks hell boring.

Rivendell was covered in the original lineup with 79006. However, you are right that Barad Dur has never been covered before.
Day One purchase. Can not wait!

Ah my bad, the actual Nazgul themselves get referred to by like four different terms, while the "Fell beast" doesn't really have a proper name, so it gets confusing.
Looks great, but it's too expensive for me. I got sucked into LOTR collectibles back when the first trilogy came out (Sideshow Toys and their polystone statues used to be THE high-end LOTR collectibles to own) but my interest in the PJ films and the property as a whole has cooled off in the past two decades (crazy that these films are 20+ years old!)
It would be nice if LEGO released some more affordable LOTR and Castle, but I'm sure they have internal metrics showing the average age of Castle and LOTR fans is somewhere north of 25. In that sense, it's kinda just cool that they release anything at all, let alone sets so elaborate and intricate.
Another winner, but not on my to-buy list.
Totally getting this day one!
Very impressive! The figs are cool, but who needs minifigs when the build is that sweet. I am still in doubt what to get this year as a big set, but this one is on my radar.
@AverageChimaEnjoyer:
Barad-dûr and the back of a fell beast? Technically, 79006 covered Rivendell already, even if it’s a bit anemic.

Under-spirited; as with all men, the agonizing screeches make us lose heart and will! But in all seriousness, I can picture the scene: "Just put anything together in the next five minutes; we gotta get it to production. It will sell out in 2 hours, regardless."
This looks a little stumpier than I expected but otherwise very cool. I wonder if there's scope for more of this kind of minifigure-based large set from Star Wars, we've seen them for LOTR and Marvel and they're pretty darn cool. Star Wars has had 75159 and 75222 but they were more like lots of little dioramas mushed into one vague shape.
I can see a Jedi Temple along these lines. I'm sure I'm not the first to suggest that!
I'm going to need an Orc booster set.

The thing is, it will sell out!
I hope the fellbeast's still there by the morning of the 1st, I can't be bothered to stay up to order it.
If the gwp is sold out, I'll just get Rivendell instead ;P

Excluding 2024, 78%. However, IP price jumps have generally been 100%+. The numbers are also slightly lower because Lego hasn't raised or barely raised the MSRP of the "try our hobby" sets such as poly bags, brickheadz, and other small sets.
*USD pricing. 2024 has seen some significant price raises not included in the above figures.

So cool to see another Lego Batman Movie set
Probably going to get it, but the GWP isn't incentive enough to throw this kind of money right away. It'll look great next to my Rivendell, though.

Out of interest, did you buy every LEGO set issued before 2019? It was difficult for many to buy every set in 2019, 2015 and 2010. That is why it is usually better to buy sets you like rather than just because they are made.
I now regret having sold Othanc. Aftermarket prices are insane.
Great build but jeez, the Sauron looks so bad as a normal fig.
I am one of the biggest fans of the Lord of the Rings on the planet and also an AFOL - yet this thing is not for me. I have neither the space nor the money for it, with space being the bigger problem. I really miss the "Lord of the Rings" as a proper LEGO theme, where you could choose from several larger and smaller sets and get what you want.
Mind you: Back in the day I actually DID spend around € 480 for Lord of the Rings and Hobbit Lego sets - but I got 10 sets with 44 minifigs for that price!
So maybe I'll get Rivendell after all. At least my wife considers that one to be pretty. There is no way on arda she would let me put Barad-Dur anywhere inside our home.
This is a vast improvement on 21335.
Awesome set.
Anyone got any thoughts on Gollum's eyes tho, given all the discourse around 'pupil-less' eyes recently? You can't tell me you think they look good without the black bits
I am glad the GWP is trash, so I do not feel pressured to get it on day 1 and can wait months/years for some good deal, but will be getting it for sure.
Such a strange time to be an AFOL. For years, I wished that Lego would acknowledge and market to their adult customers that they largely ignored. Now they are catering to AFOLs non-stop, and all I can think is, "Damn. I can't afford anything anymore."
No eagles?!? How are Frodo and Sam supposed to get away from there?
Can someone explain why green orc has black eyes?

The black with white for other characters is fine, so I can see why they did blue with white for Gollum. I prefer the black pupils of the older figures as they look a bit more piercing.
I wasn't planning on getting this anyway, but I thought it was going to be an August or September release not a June one! Not a chance for me to save up enough to get that GWP. Even then it's not that great of a promo. Id rather that be a little $20 set then something you gotta spend $400 on, but I'd love to get a full legion of nine of 'em to swarm the tower if I ever do get my hands on it.
I've never seen bankruptcy look so appealing.
I’m not sure what I expected and/or hoped for but my initial response is underwhelming. Maybe a fell beast should have been included like 10237 Orthanc including an Ent and Eagle. Maybe throw in some more orcs? Weirdly, I was more amazed (and still am) by 76417 Gringotts, and I’m more of a LOTR fan than Harry Potter. And the stickers really jump out at you here.
Yawn. Zzzzzz.
@PhantomBricks
@PurpleDave
I suppose yeah, 79006 technically was Rivendell, but it was a very small section of a large municipality. So I suppose it's up to us to decide whether that counts or not.
I can’t help but feel disappointed. Maybe I got my hopes up too high. At least have to say, that Gollum and fell beast are nothing short of atrocities
I SEE YOU
I'll wait until they re-release Sauron with a microfighter Barad-dûr.
This really looks fantastic. Kudos to the designers for finding unique ways to keep the build interesting--so many little details!
The minifigures are mostly great. I don't much care for the updated printing on Gollum--the version used for The Hobbit and LEGO Dimensions (with the narrowed eyes) better captured the menacing nature of the character, IMO. While Frodo and Sam would definitely benefit from having "worn" looking clothing, I think the orc helmets go a long ways to reflect the characters' appearance while traveling through Mordor.
Unfortunately this is completely out of my price range, so I will have to be content to admire it from afar. Even though I think this set and Rivendell are both amazing sets, the steep prices are going to prevent a lot of people from adding them to their collections. I do hope that LEGO eventually returns to making LOTR sets that are more affordable (and no, I don't count BrickHeadz. even though I know they have their fans).
I fully expect Lego to release a 200-piece $10 set and AFOLs to moan about it being too expensive.
@merman said:

I never bought Orthanc and previously regretted it, however, since I had 79005, it was relatively easy to buy most of the actual tower parts (if you can forget some stickered parts, Treebeard and the other minifigs).

Underrated comment.
As iconic as that eye and tower is, I just can't see it being as good of a display piece as Rivendell, or other scenes from the movies. Partly because of the shape. It's a lot of stuff in a small footprint, which could have been a good thing, but I have no idea where I would be able to have something that tall sitting around. But also because it's basically just black, which isn't very decorative of a thing to have in my home.
I think this would lend itself better as a play-set at a lower price point, than a top-tier display model. But hey, a lot of people seem to be really hyped about this so maybe it's just me. I like to have happy and colourful things around me, the real world is dark enough already at the moment.
It's a wonderful but pretty expensive set with an amazing line of minifigures (except for the orc with that ridiculous bandana...) but unfortunately I do not have that WOW feeling I had for the tower of Orthanc. For me this set is lacking the details that could make it a really great set. I will Bricklink some of the minifigs but overall it is not for me at that price.
The Fell Beast looks good for what it is, but thankfully I'm not fully smitten with it so I can wait until I actually have money for the set. I'm already living on credit and credit for more LEGO seems silly.
The set looks solid though. A nice addition to Orthanc. The figures look great. Mouth is updated enough from previous, but I was happy with the old version. But new other characters are always welcomed.
Hopefully it will be around in a few years when I will be able to afford it.
I love this build!!! Dream come true. Not sure why everyone dislikes the GWP. It's our first Fell Beast, looks like a good build, has an exclusive Ringwraith Minifigure, and it's much better than the lame BrickHeadz GWP with Rivendell.
Sauron is my only disappointment with this set. His helmet looks odd since it's one mold with his shoulder armor, and I second everyone saying he needed the Avatar limbs. His head is bigger than his entire torso! I know he has a tall helmet but his proportions just look very off. He still looks decent, but I did expect more after waiting so long for a Minifigure of him.
Size?
I need ti manage both budget and space

From the specs on LEGO's website :
"Dimensions – The fortress in this 5,471-piece building set measures over 32.5 in. (83 cm) high, 17.5 in. (45 cm) wide and 12 in. (30 cm) deep"
That's really high – the available space over the shelf I was planning to display it on is only 30"... Major rethinking ahead! Unlike Saturn V, this one cannot be displayed on its side, unless you want to recreate the post-ring destruction scene? XD
To my wife: “Honey, is it ok if I buy a new dust-collector?”
Wife: “what is wrong with our Dyson?”
I’ve been saving money for close to six month for this set. Was looking forward to the reveal. It’ll be a day one purchase for me!
But on a serious note: beautiful set!
Maybe even set of the year IMO. Even better than Rivendell
Love the black tower and the eye on top!
Always a sucker for black sets ( darth vaders castle, krennics shuttle, kylo rens shuttle, inquisitors scythe )
Alas the price is out of my budget and I dont have the space for the vertical footprint.
Love the sauron fig as wel!
Not much interest in LOTR but loved Rivendell for its fantastic build and looks. I'm afraid this one is just a dull black castle, so it's a no from me!

Gwp of an important creature in the franchise that's never been made before, with an exclusive Minifigure. Underwhelming???

Can I buy just that part?"
yeah! you can! It's only $460
I'm surprised they managed to get as much colour into it as they did... to the point that I actually voted "No, but I like it" rather than "No, it doesn't interest me"!

"As iconic as that eye and tower is, I just can't see it being as good of a display piece as Rivendell, or other scenes from the movies.
I like to have happy and colourful things around me, the real world is dark enough already at the moment."
There are plenty of brightly coloured, happy sets that are available at lower price points. Making Barad-Dur smaller wouldn't change it into a brightly coloured, happy set.
When I heard about the Fell Beast, I was genuinely mad at LEGO for it…that was the only thing really missing grin the theme(with the Witch King of course). Now that I see it, I’m not mad anymore.
Honestly, a little underwhelmed by the tower. The picture makes it look muddy, which is because of all the black. It’s like the Batman Shadowbox, I’ll bet it looks much better in person.
@huw
So is it 1st or 4th June? Lego.com says "Coming Soon on 4 June 2024"
I'm afraid to admit that I'd probably rather have 21348 Dungeons and Dragons, if I were in the store facing both options and could only buy 1. And why does 76269 Avenger's Tower just look like you get so much more bang for your buck?

Dimensions are 83cm tall and 45cm wide

It's about 83cm x 45cm. 32.5 x 17.5 inches.
Zoom into the top right of the box image.
Hmmm.... I'm almost too scared to criticize this. I don't want LOTR to disappear again. It's like a precious little flower that we must praise and nurture.
Ah, hell with it! These figs are horrible! Technicolor Golem, the two spares, mini-me Sauron, another Mouth, blind orcs. The worst is the skimpiness. Have Sam n Frodo had a bit o' luck, and they've already cleared-out for the Gate?
The Orcs are ok (blindness aside), except that there is only enough interesting gear for one! Why are you sooooooo f&*king cheap, Lego?! Rivendell is much, much better.
At least they gave us a not-vomit-inducing GWP. Is it better than the Mimic? I'm not sure. I agree with the commentor above who suggested that this was last-minute homework.
It's definitely better than patches! (Unless, it's a sweet puppy named Patches, that'd be adorable). But, where are the promised 3 figs?!! Where's a Captain of Gondor to do his Steward's bidding? Where's the Orc Commander? I'll even take a soldier of Gondor, or one god-d&*d more blind orc.
Where is Golem's torture rack? Where's all the dudes? This set barely has enough orcs to fill the kitchen? I know Lego can't go too dark, but the largest room in Barad-dur is a mess hall?! Sauron obviously knows that an army travels on its stomach.
Is this a Friends set? Where's the crapper? Save that crap for Bag End. Or, at least give us a couple Orcs with pink, frilly aprons. Maybe one with his hair up in a bun? Is that what the one in the red, do-rag is about?
I agree with no-backdoor-Yellowcastle, that Gringotts had a much better GWP and fulfillment of expectations. I really wanted to LOVE this, but Lego cheapness got in the way.
The front is good. But, they should've sprung for trans-Technic for the Eye. It looks like Sauron has been canceled from behind (like @Yellowcastle ).
I will buy this, but I won't LOVE it as much as I wanted to.
Some more New Zealand architecture to add to the every-growing list!
Day one purchase for sure! The Fell Beast looks plain though, should have printed eyes or at least stickers. And whats up with Gollums eyes?

June 1st for Lego insiders, June 4th for general release.
"LEGO fans with more than one copy of the set will be able to stack this section to build a taller tower."
When I read this line, I picture Lego execs sitting around a table, sipping 250.00 scotch, twirling thier pencil thin mustaches, and chuckling....evilly. Guess I am not a Lego fan, I will never buy more than one, and might not buy this.
I want it so bad, but guarantee I will never be able to justify spending that much on a single set. Just don't have the money. Hopefully they release some more affordably prices LOTR sets one day...
I too don't want to bite the LotR hand that annually feeds us but this set doesn't seem to hold up to 10316 Rivendell. To be honest, it also doesn't significantly improve on 10237 Orthanc. And it's more than 250% of the original cost of Orthanc. Where are all these pieces? (Bingo) For some reason, every time I look at the @StyleCounselor open backed kimono image, I keep seeing 10273 Haunted House. Now I find myself looking for the Mordor elevator. And the marketing blurb selling us on the option to partially increase the size by spending another $500 is laughable. I'm not bothered by Gollum or the hobbitses outfits but I feel a couple more minifigs and a side build or two could have helped. Yes, I'm actually asking for side builds. :o)
I like the GWP, but I don't LOVE it. I realize that the Hungarian Horntail style in 76406 might have been too much to ask for but maybe a little more meat on the bones for this one?
I like the “eye” and the mouth of Sauron. Probably Sauron himself as well though agree he should have been taller. The rest doesn’t look nearly as nice or tempt me as much as Rivendell did. Honestly, an Argonath is about all that would I think. Or a *really* well done Balrog.
@yellowcastle said:

Look at the width compared to Orthanc. That will account for a fair chunk of parts.
According to the sticker in the mess hall - It looks like meat's back on the menu!
I don’t like to complain about GWPs, buuuuuttttt…
That being said, the main tower is perfect. Couldn’t ask for more. The minifigures are decent, but not the best. Someone else mentioned how Sauron looked like one of the overdone customs, and I can’t exactly argue with that, but it doesn’t look bad by any means. Would’ve preferred a Witch-King to the Mouth, but part of that is just wanting to know if we will ever actually get any more LotR stuff, as this is the last confirmed one that I’m aware of. If we had hope for a whole line, I wouldn’t be worried, but as is…
Orc with a bandana, that's new.
@yellowcastle said:
"I'm afraid to admit that I'd probably rather have 21348 Dungeons and Dragons, if I were in the store facing both options and could only buy 1."
I had exactly that dilemma. Buy 21348 Dungeons & Dragons on its release to get the 5008325 Mimic promo set or wait for Barad-Dûr. I don’t have the budget, space or time for both. I went with the D&D sets and don’t regret it.
Barad-Dûr isn’t bad, but it has issues that bug me, most of which have already been mentioned in this thread. One that hasn’t been stressed much is that its overall proportions are wrong: its silhouette is too squat; it should be narrower at the base for its height.
As for the Sauron minifigure, its helmet/pauldron piece is too detailed. It doesn’t look at all LEGO-y. And as already brought up, it’s too short. Someone needs to parody the Sauron minifigure when it gets released by giving it short legs.
I think this would've been SO much better as a fully-enclosed micro/midi-scale display-only model (and as such also smaller). Rivendell I totally get as a minifigure-scale set since it's so much about the scenes and characters there, but with Barad Dur I think most people just think of the tower exterior and the eye, and not so much the orc dining hall. A micro/midi-scale set could've been more affordable and more displayable as well.
But all I really want is to have the LotR theme back, with actual play sets and not just these D2C behemoths that many can't afford or find the room to display.
This set needs a battle pack. Those orcs with their new helmets look fantastic. It needs a battle pack with orcs versus Gondor knights.

"Just wanted to clarify for everyone: Nazgul are the Ringwraiths, Felllbeasts are the dragons. They're used too interchangeably and it makes me annoyed."
Well ACKCHUALLY they are not dragons, nor are they called fell beasts. (One of them technically is, but it's not the name of its species, it's simply a descriptor: it's a beast that is fell.)
TBH I wish the upper part of the tower was fully enclosed, not open backed. It's not like we ever get a description of the interior during either movie or books, so I might have preferred a full focus on exterior accuracy. Otherwise, I like it. A lot. Unfortunately it's gonna be a while before I can afford it.
Also, not sure why people are so upset about the Sauron minifig. I think he looks fantastic. This is how Sauron appeared both in LEGO Dimensions and as a playable character in LEGO Lord of the Rings back in the day. So I suppose I'm used to seeing him in minifig form like this.
Mouth of Sauron looks great too, I missed the Black Gate set in 2013 so I don't have that minifig yet. Gothmog is good, but the remaining figs are... meh. I really hate how Gollum looks now, but again I'm used to his appearance from 2012-2013. Frodo and Sam should have different prints showing wear and tear (or orc armor) on their clothes. The red bandana didn't bother me at first glance, but now I notice it sticks out like a sore thumb in every image....
And I realize that meat's back on the menu, but am I the only one annoyed that they used random semi-Dwarven characters on that board? Granted, there isn't a known alphabet for the Black Speech (AFAIK), but they surely could've used the correct Cirth. What's depicted more or less spells "hw kw [something] ch kh hw". Maybe knowing the Dwarvish alphabet is a bit much to ask of LEGO's graphic designers, though.

I don’t like the subject matter as much as Rivendell, but they exceeded expectations with the color use in this one. It looks so much better than I expected. Stickers is as always cheap af for a model of this caliber
That light brick will barely work for the eye; should have used the lighting system from 21335. This set is begging for a third-party light kit.

I believe it just means the sections of the tower are modular, and you can stack multiples of the sections were you inclined to do so. It'd be a pretty tall order to buy two full sets just for a couple extra floors to the tower, but it probably wouldn't be a stretch to build an extra floor or two from loose bricks or pick-a-brick/etc. If you follow thru to the set page, there are images of each of the modules on their own.

Wonder how many copies you'd have to buy until the set would naturally recreate the scene of Sauron's final death.
@MVives said: "That light brick will barely work for the eye; should have used the lighting system from 21335"
Seriously? That set shows everything that's wrong with the PU system - overengineered, overcomplicated and overpriced. Adding that to this set would easily added $150-200 to the price. Even the basic battery box (which saves you all the bluetooth/app headaches of the "hubs") costs five times as much as the similar PF one.
Looks like a burnt out Disney castle.

Not bad though. Sauron is nice, some of the figures are me and generic, the Mouth of Sauron looks redundant. Hopefully there’s good stock of the GWP if I’m buying day one. I have all of the figures in the theme and I don’t wanna pay extra for the Fell Beast set because it sells out in 10 minutes!"
Dimensions – The fortress in this 5,471-piece building set measures over 83 cm (32.5 in.) high, 45 cm (17.5 in.) wide and 30 cm (12 in.) deep
If only we knew the dimensions.

Little plastic ring. Good luck find it, though. There's only one.
So, let's see, who do we have for minifigs? There's Naked Gollum (seriously, dude, put some clothes on). Frodoooh, shiny! Samwise. Thorc. Mouth of Sauron (how does he see in that thing?). Sharp Helmet (now played by Rick Moranis). Grishnak. Chariots of Fire Orc (didn't he die already?). Pirate Orc. And Goth "I'm not a Balrog" Mog.
It’s 32.5” so it will fit on my shelf. I guess I’ll be buying my largest and most expensive Lego set ever. Previously it was the Death Star.

Why would they include Faramir or soldiers of Gondor? If this is as well-received as Rivendell, we might get a large set every year, with possibilities like Minas Tirith, Edoras, Helms Deep, and maybe eventually a new Orthanc. They can save the Gondor figs for Minas Tirith.

You can take the boy outa da hood, but you can't take it outa me.
A silly, mean, angry nerd I'll be, till the end of my days.
Kudos to Lego for not just bringing back lotr, but also making both sets set of the year candidates. I tip my hat.
Also what do people expect for the fell beast at this scale? Adding anymore details to the face would rely on prints or stickers, and to be honest would probably get a lot more flack from the lego community. I prefer the blank face as it gets the general idea across, which i think is necessary at that scale. The rest of the body looks great in my opinion. And the fact its something we've never gotten in lego is a huge bonus.

Yup - I was guessing the 12 Angry men set would be a dozen assorted blokes in Lego T-shirts each with a small screen build. They could also each come accessorized with a 2x1 tile and a sticker sheet, and you could choose between classic Castle /Space /Pirates / Town or Star Wars box decals. If you apply stickers that is…….
It’s not a bad build - I like that they’ve managed to find ways of breaking up the black facade and have leaned into the humor of the old Lego LOTR mini-movies: I almost expected to see a cave troll’s birthday cake coming out of that kitchen / mess hall.

Ooh. Balrog minifig riding a Balrog microfighter! We wants it!
LOVE this set!
Love that its almost of a response to Rivendell, and contrasts wo well.
Love that they used the same couple in the advertising.
Love the colors and minifigures, and I agree that Sauron will go for a pretty penny in 5-10 years.
Also love the Fell Beast! Was always hoping one would come, and its a very good GWP.
I don't expect this set to have every minifigure mentioned above, but I do hope we get some in future sets.
I hope we do get a BIG LOTR set every couple years, like Helms Deep, Minas Tirith, maybe a Prancing Pony Attack set too. Honestly I would love it if they kept this theme going, my daughter is in the middle of building Rivendell and its one of the most beautiful sets that LEGO has produced and the overall set is a 10! Minifigs, color, size, its a 10, and this will be the perfect companion.
Might have to figure out the budget for this, but I want the Fell Beast, so looks like Day one for me. D&D was a day one set for me too, and the GWP helped a lot push it to day 1 but this is gorgeous and I can't wait!
Thanks LEGO.
This was going to be a day 1 purchase for me because of GWP, but now that I've seen the Fell Beast set I might just wait for double VIP or something like that. Pretty disappointing GWP, with a generic Nazgul who looks more like a Dementor than anything else.
But dang, that tower looks amazing! I will absolutely have this set by Christmas. XD

LEGO have decided LOTR is an 18+ subtheme of Icons (and Brickheadz) so aimed at adults, not playsets aimed at kids. LOTR has nowhere near the fan base of 8-12 year old that Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel, Disney, etc have. Of course, those IPs also have adult fans and so get 18+ sets too.

Not that impressed.
Especially the fact that it is not an enclosed building, is a big let down.
In my opinion, it would have been better to make it smaller, but fully enclosed and able to open it up.

If only there was something in between...
It's an okay set to me, but nothing that really makes me want it (edit: especially considering the price).
Each to his own of course, I am very curious as to what makes this set so very attractive? I very much like LothR though. Rivendell seems way more attractive personally.

The design, the shaping, the size. Even though they are both large LOTR sets, Rivendell and Barad-Dur are really quite different sets. Barad-Dur captures the imposing tower brilliantly, although won't be that appealing to people that don't like black (even though they have done a good job incorporating colour into it, except maybe the second level). Whereas Rivendell looks lovely even if you don't like LOTR due to the colour and style, but is not necessarily a particularly good / accurate model of the whole of Rivendell and is a bit flat. Personally, I prefer Rivendell, but think they both look great in their different ways.

Well, think of it this way. There’s always the possibility that they’ll include that fellbeast (and associated minifigs) in a different set. If they do something for Minas Tirith, that would be an excellent opportunity.
Of course, now the problem is youd need eight of this set and one of whatever the Witch King ships with.

I think it will sell. And you don't need two to make it complete, you only need extra bricks to make it even taller. But given the imposing height already, I doubt that nant people will want that.

There are plenty of brightly coloured, happy sets that are available at lower price points. Making Barad-Dur smaller wouldn't change it into a brightly coloured, happy set."
Of course it wouldn't. My point was, as a play set it wouldn't need to be. It would just have to be fun for kids to play with. But as a display piece, which this clearly is considering the size and price point, I don't think it does as well as many other scenes would have. I'm questioning the subject for the purpose. But anyone who loves it, and can afford it, should definitely buy it. We all have different tastes."
I'm happier seeing LOTR glorified by Icons than defiled by mechs..."
I'd probably buy a Sauron mech, not gonna lie."
An Ent mech, piloted by Merry and Pippin, would sell out instantly.

Actually, I think for the most part it’s a few of the local characters having a bit of fun. I don’t dare tag any of the rouge’s gallery, or they’ll start all over again. "
I too am disappointed with local rabble rouser @StyleCounselor, bringing his unwelcome brand of heartfelt opinions and whimsical humor. I didn’t realize, though that there was a whole gallery of blushing folks."
It was a joke my guy. I forgot extreme sarcasm doesn't show up well through text

I can say this with some experience. If you take anything Yellowcastle says seriously, the joke's on you.
If you take anything I say seriously, it's time for professional help. ;)

Shirley we can’t all be serious.
Grand Moff Jokic, I should’ve expected to find you holding Fatsochillyfries’s leash. I recognized your foul stench when my name was brought onboard.

I'm not sure how to take that...
Wow, I didn’t tag them and yet I still got roped in. Live and learn!

Liberally.
If I do end up buying this, a big part of that decision would be that I already own Orthanc. It would look so good to have them flanking Rivendell (which I have yet to buy). No idea where such a display could actually be, well, displayed though.
The highest rated comment is "more affordable LOTR sets please". I really hope LEGO is listening.
