First look at Wicked minidolls

Posted by ,

Following the announcement that Wicked sets will be released prior to the film adaptation's release later this year, a LEGO version of the trailer has just premiered on YouTube.

It gives us our first look at the minidoll characters, including the protagonist and antagonist witches Elphaba and Glinda.

View the trailer after the break then let us know which other characters you recognise in it.

I know it wont happen but I would love to see them do the other books and get Liir and Rain minidolls.

Goosebumps!

This is actually pretty awesome. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but minidolls are the right choice for this theme.

I did love that giant Great and Powerful minifig head. And Doctor Dillamond is already my favorite character.

Come on flying monkey battle pack.

What this mostly does is make me want to read the book--not a bad thing, I'm sure. And the brickwork is awesome.

What's more, I like the minidolls. I think they work very well for fantasy figures, being idealized in quite different ways from the classic minifigure--in much the same way that animation tends to idealize the human figure.

The book is quite different from the musical/movie, I am not entirely sure I would recommend it .

That was a super well-done video! The mini-dolls look good but I still would have preferred minifigures. I'm obsessed with the new hairpieces, though!!

That’ll be perfect for giving my dad bad flashbacks to those scenes from when he was a kid. He hated those things.

By in France,

Although there are 98% mindiolls shown in the trailer, the flying monkeys seem to be minifigure based. So there is a small chance some other characters to be minifigures as well... have you seen the giant yellow minifigure head by the way ? Can't wait to see the final sets now!

By in United States,

I just went to see the play last night, I hope the movie is as good. In the Lego trailer I am disappointed in the look of Emerald city, I was hoping for trans bright green pieces, not sand green, dk green and tan. I do like the witches in mini doll, hopefully the different looks of Elphaba are going to be available. Looking forward to see what sets come out.

Not bad, but it makes me wish mini-dolls could have some of those articulation points.

1:59 Elves mini-doll, nice.

Well, now I want to see the LEGO version of the movie too. Looks amazing.

Agreed. I love the musical but could not get into the book at all. In most cases I am an ardent advocate of "books > movies/TV", but this is definitely one of my exceptions.

Looking forward to the movie. Jury's out on the Lego sets.

I have seen the musical 25 times. I struggled to finish the book. So, yes, I agree!

Seeing the trailer recently, and not having seen the musical, its weird how the story has a Harry Potter vibe. Does Oz have so many fairies that they need a school?

On a LEGO note, there should be a set based on that train in Wicked.

Yes! More trains are always good - especially streamliners!

Pretty sure that's Aliya from the current generation of Friends in a shot at 0:25. And I noticed there's a girl in the background of the Ozdust ballroom scene wearing Tiana's dress (though not Tiana herself since this girl has purple hair)... checking that shot again, in the same scene other minidolls are wearing Prince Charming's and Elsa's outfits. Guess it makes sense for the video, though, to use already-existing minidoll part designs where they can for the background extras who aren't going to be in the sets.

Count me in as another fan of the musical / not-fan of the book. The book is long, slow, and weird. I finished it, but it was a grueling slog.

They better release a Michelle Yeoh minidoll

As I understand it, Shiz is more of an all-around university that teaches a wide variety of more normal courses; Elphaba studying magic is a fairly uncommon case. Madam Morrible makes a point in the musical that she doesn't teach her sorcery course often, only when someone particularly special comes along - and when Elphaba does, Morrible tutors her privately in the subject and doesn't run a full class.

That said, it does look like the movie is putting more emphasis on the school than the musical did, so they might have changed things up a bit.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Alot of the minidolls looked very similar to previous ones I have seen before, including Glinda.

I'm not really sure who any of them are, I've never seen Oz or wicked in any form. I was looking more at the background, hoping they were hints of buildings to come.

Certainly less singing in the book.

@crazymaniac22:
The flying monkeys look like the TLBM minifigs, so either they’re going back to that design because the shape is already developed, or they pulled them up just to have something for the video because they don’t have a new flying monkey design that they’re willing/ready to unveil at this time.

What makes me surprised about the choice of mini-dolls for Wicked is actually more on the tone than the form. Despite Wicked taking place in a very colorful world, my personal take on the tone and the theme of the story is actually much darker and more mature, so seeing minidolls (typically from Friends, Disney Princess, Elves, and other very colorful and playful themes) representing a darker story is very interesting.

By in Germany,

Happy for those who are excited about this stuff.
I'm not one of them. Before I read the news on Brickset and then researched the subject I had never even heard of Wicked before. Sure, I have the Ladybird Books edition of the Wizard of Oz, but that's about it. I also have the four CMFs of Dorothy and the gang, and I really like those. Minidolls aren't my thing.

Hmm interesting, they havent used new flying Monkeys in this, those are old Minifig ones used in Dimensions...

Why? I had the aforementioned Wizard of Oz book ever since I was a kid. I think I got it through a Weetabix promotion back in the day - along with several other Ladybird books by the way.
I have read it several times, it just never became a favorite of mine.
I have also never been interested in musicals, so Wicked doesn't interest me very much either.
I rather spend my time building with bricks - by whatever manufacturer.

Dimensions used a brickbuilt monkey as the Wicked Witch's "vehicle". The minifigs came in 70917.

I agree. Both forms of characters, at this stage, are quite safe I would think. So people are free to zig or zag as they see fit.

If you ignore all the sets with minifigs in, there are no minifig based sets at all this year.

Interesting point. I think introducing an alternative vibe (darker) could be a useful addition for minidoll builders. The best stories include shades of light and dark / good and bad. I'm all for sunshine and rainbows but it's refreshing to have options to represent different moods too.

As someone with absolutely zero interest in Wicked, I would first like to mention the GOAT, and then comment on how much I appreciate the wig spin when the minidolls turn around. The trailer is good fun, the minidolls look very nice and it’s always nice to see a flying monkey!

Oh - WickED?

Oh. Well, it's probably for the best. Let's just leave the dog-mutilation to Nova, she will brook no interference."

I love how of the current-wave friends Nova is the only one I remember--my oldest moved on from Friends and there are too many bland characters--and I only remember her as the one ALLEGEDLY going around Heartlake City doing unspeakable things to animals.

I don't think so. Halle Bailey from the live action The Little Mermaid has a minifigure and a minidoll. Arguably you could say a lot of Disney Princess minifigs/minidolls may count as well, but that might get into the nitty gritty of animated characters vs real people as seen on screen. Amy Corbett from the US LEGO Masters has a minidoll of her, but not an official minifig but a consistent one that has appeared on the show.
