Here's the press release for the new Transformers set that was teased on Monday:
10338 Bumblebee
950 pieces, rated 18+
€89.99 / $89.99 / £79.99
Available from 1st July at LEGO.com
Today the LEGO Group unveils the latest addition to its much-loved LEGO TRANSFORMERS lineup: the LEGO Icons TRANSFORMERS Bumblebee set. Released amid the beloved franchise’s 40th anniversary year, this new set is poised to captivate existing fans and invite new audiences to play out the battle between good and evil.
Maintaining the same scale as 10302 Optimus Prime, this set presents enthusiasts with the opportunity to construct the iconic Autobot, Bumblebee, entirely from LEGO bricks. As a vital companion to LEGO Optimus Prime, Bumblebee completes the iconic duo, allowing fans to recreate epic battles and adventures.
What distinguishes this model is its remarkable ability to seamlessly transition between bot mode and vehicle mode, unlocking impressive versatility without the need for disassembly.
The 950-piece set is a highly detailed model of the iconic 1980s robot action figure. It features articulated joints, an ion blaster, and a jetpack, seamlessly converting from Autobot to vehicle mode; accompanied by a display plaque, integrated LEGO Builder app for digital instructions and versatile display options, making it a perfect gift for TRANSFORMERS fans and collectors.

Love Transformers. But, this is too much like Gen 1. Those legs are just awful.

A boring choice in my opinion.
I'm trying to grab it but the screen is in the way. Anyone have a sledgehammer I could borrow for a minute?
Transformers being my second hobby Im the target demographic for this, and I snapped up Optimus immediately. Bumblebee is my least fave character so I'll likely pass. Car mode looks good enough though.
Oof, was a big fan of Optimus but this isn’t hitting the mark for me sadly. Think it helped that Prime borrowed heavily from his original G1 toy’s tried-and-true transformation so a lot of the engineering was already ‘sorted’ as such, whilst Bee’s transformation looks designed from scratch and….. yeah, you can kinda tell lol.
Ah well, can’t win em all - bring on Soundwave next please!
I like the original Transformers and the robot mode looks great, but the shape of the car sort of seems odd to me. It's very square on the side windows and overall doesn't really look much like a Beetle.
I dunno... the torso looks a little too large compared to the head. Maybe that's just how Transformers are IDK.
Other than that though, this model looks really great!
I must say it is a bit underwhelming. I will probalbly buy it because Transformers were my favorite toys at one point even above Lego.
It seems LEGO couldn't get the licence from Volkswagen.
Give us something interesting, like Grimlock or Starscream.
This is all very well and good, but when are we going to get the Lego Transformers x Star Wars Millennium Falcon/ Han Solo & Chewbacca that no one has asked for

Here's one, but it is also behind a screen: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sledgehammer/media/File:Sledgehammers-1.jpg
This is a rough one. I guess it's nice to have a generally affordable 18+ set, but the Transformer looks extremely bare bones, while that might be one of the ugliest cars I've ever seen in a LEGO set. A very disappointing follow up to Optimus if you ask me.
Looks good as a robot. As a car, not so much…
Let’s be honest, no one is going to buy this just to keep it in car mode.
What a piece of crud
I'd rather it be the Camaro instead of the Bettle.
Moe: No c'mon, I need a robot that says friendly all american Lego building.
Homer: How about G1 Classic Tape Deck Soundwave?
Barney: I like it!
Moe: Nah, I want something that says people can have a nice relaxing time.
Homer: I got it! Megatron in original ruger pistol mode?
Barney: I like it!
Moe: Hey, how bout a Bumblebee that makes terrible compromises between both robot and beetle modes?
Barney: I hate it.
I would have preferred a Bayverse bumblebee, even if it meant sacrificing the transforming function

I got my hopes up for a second but was a bit disappointed that it's a cartoon-style Bumblebee. I've wanted a 2007 live-action movie Camaro Bumblebee set for years. This isn't a bad set though.
ugh it's so ugly, like all old transformers
Despite what the press release says, this is NOT scaled to Optimus. Optimus is roughly minifig scale. Bumblebee in the movie and G1 has always been half the size of Optimus. This version has Bumblebee the same width and the same tire size as Optimus. Those tires are obnoxiously oversized. Might end up buying this one for the stickers...
One wonders how Hasbro was able to get the likeness for all these vehicles back in the 1980s without being sued by every real-world vehicle maker...
Partsforming? What? Shhhhh!
Glad it's the G1 Bumblebee. The robot mode looks pretty spot on from memory (not googled it). The car looks rather odd, but I'd not keep it in car mode, so that doesn't bother me. I'll probably get it at some point.
Okay so now finally seeing more higher quality images it does make it easier to see some of the techniques used here. Like the biggest surprise I saw was 4182751: FLEX JOINT 6M, Ø24, MALE but it is a double ended version! That is extremely cool use for the piece in my opinion. As for the set I think it is not the worse looking but certainly a little rough in areas, but knowing what they are going for with the transformation I think this will be a fun build to see the building techniques.
Everyone in the comments for the teaser who'd seen the leaked images was saying this looked terrible. I think it looks great! Admittedly, Bumblebee's been my favorite Transformer (I have over fifty of various versions) since G1, so I may be a bit biased... Definitely a Day One buy for me, though, unless I know of an upcoming GWP or Double Insiders points when it gets released.

I feel the same way almost like it looks like a checkered cab from NYC in the 70s
https://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/20/automobiles/checker-cabs-return-to-gotham.html
Where should the Transformers/Autobot symbol go? In car mode, I see it on the hood/bonnet but also on the roof.
Having now googled images of Bumblebee from the comic and of the toy, I can't find any version that looks like this! However, I don't that that's too bad, as I think this looks pretty decent, and arguably how G1 bumblebee should have been. Let's face it, if they'd designed it based on the G1 toy it would have looked crap!
I rather like this set. It's going to look good next to Optimus, and I'm very impressed by the price. Hopefully LEGO continues to make more Transformers sets. Megatron, Grimlock, Starscream, Shockwave, and many others would be awesome :)
I'm a fan of VW Beetles, so I was looking forward to this when the rumors came out. But that car mode is just disappointing. The shape is weird, and the big knob on the back is super weird. Is that supposed to be a spare tire? Spare tires for bugs go in the front trunk space. It looks more like some 1930s vehicle, not a 1960/70s VW.
I'm waiting for the Lego set where you can put Bumblebee (or Optimus Prime) inside a mecha - if they can do Star Wars mechas, surely they should do Transformers mechas...
Are you kidding me? This is AMAZING. Day 1 purchase for sure. Reasonable price too. If you have Optimus Prime, how can you NOT get this?

It seems like car companies just kind of left them alone--either they hadn't realized they *could* make a legal issue out of it, or it didn't occur to them that they could care. Hasbro kept doing this sort of thing well into the nineties without a problem, not only making Transformers based on real cars but in one case straight up ripping off an apparently original design Mattel came up with for Hot Wheels. Then in 2001 Dodge got on their case about Side Burn, an Autobot with an incredibly stupid name who turned into what was clearly a Viper, and from there on out suddenly everyone turns into either "you can tell it's supposed to be a Jeep of some kind but it's modified enough to be legally distinct" or "a licensed Jeep Wrangler with Jeep logos on both the actual toy and the box."
Though in Bumblebee's case, he only kind of turns into a Beetle anyway. Technically, his original altmode is a Penny Racer.

I mean... the Beetle is a 1930s vehicle.
But indeed, this one is looking much more like a generic american 1930s vehicle thanks to the weird back. Besides this, the lack of knee joints simply kills this set.
I'm no Transformer big fan nor connaisseur, but this doesn't look bad. Not bad at all.

So... A meta mecha?
I was wondering where the windshield on the car mode went. Then I noticed that it's repurposed as wings on the back. Nice!
There's also a printed bee tile in there too. Also nice!
I'd just like to point out that this is about the 40th comment and I don't think anyone has complained about the price. Let's just appreciate that for a moment.
Most impressive feature is how the Autobots logo "seamlessly transitions" from the hood to the roof!
All jokes aside, less impressed by this than by the Optimus Prime set. Both in robot and car form it looks rather crude. Like it's from a different instance of the franchise than OP was.

True, it was designed in the 30s, but production really didn't start until post WWII.
Although I was mostly thinking of American imports, which didn't start until 1949 and really took off in the following decade.
This vehicle looks more like an 80's Citroen 2CV6 than G1 Bumblebee's 80's VW Bug. Though suspect, due to transform-ability, that this shaping could not be obtained.
Man these comments are cranky. How can you guys not love this - this looks AWESOME! I've been out of LEGO for a while now focused on other projects, but I, for one, am getting this day one and he'll look great standing next to Optimus Prime.
I don't know if anyone else has noticed yet; the horrible cop-out where you have to completely remove the front windscreens and then pretend they're some sort of 'jetpack' when you feebly re-attach them on his back in robot form.
Sorry LEGO, but that's weak.
I actually like it. I liked Transformers as a kid (I was always a fan of Starscream).
I think the car actually looks decent, even if it isn't spot on to one specific car. The robot form looks very reminiscent of an '80s toy, so I'm down.
I have too many other purchases ahead of this one so who knows if and when I will pick it up. But I don't see the negativity as others do I guess.

Personally I like it, but I'll definitely agree with you about Soundwave, I love him in every universe! I'd love to see a Starscream, but considering that his alt-mode is based on a F-15 I doubt we'll see him.
Can a minifig sit inside? I think he looks great in both modes.

My thoughts exactly--he's not as good as Prime, and there are other characters I'd rather have, but he's great and I must have him! Would love to see G1 Soundwave or Starscream next since I think we can assume we'll never get G1 Megs...
Never watched Transformers. Bought Optimus Prime because it looked good. Don't think this one looks bad at all. In fact at half the RRP of Optimus Prime it looks more than half as good. I think, as a car, it looks pretty good (even though it doesn't bare the slightest resemblance to a Beetle!)
Will probably get it to keep Optimus Prime company but would never have bought it on its own.

something something Dreadflipper.
that does not look good at all
Price is good. Design seems relatively faithful to my original. I’m sorry, but I’m struggling to find significant concerns at first look.
Now to figure out how to change him to all red.
The set number spells BEE01 upside-down!
For those people in the comments asking for a Megatron next, keep in mind that Megatron is now a tank, not a pistol. Hasbro would never let LEGO make him a gun, and I doubt LEGO would want to make a gun. I'm not sure LEGO would want to make a tank, either, to be honest. I would love for some of the Helmet series to be done with the Transformers license, though.
I do like the little bumblebee piece in the window, though I'm a little upset they didn't make a Spike minifig to go with this that could fit in the seat. Looking at the pictures, looks like there's no way to stuff a minifig in there, though.
Wonder what it would take to turn this into Cliffjumper (basically a red Bumblebee). I always like that character when I was a child...
Should’ve been a megatron,starscream,soundwave or grimlock.
Bumblebee is such a bland character/vehicle.
G1 Bumblebee isn't my favorite design of his, but the set looks... decent. Fair of the price. Doing a modern toy of G1 Bumblebee is a trickier prospect than doing a modern toy of G1 Optimus Prime because the original Diaclone toy design was pretty comprehensive and didn't need too many adjustments for the cartoon, while they took a LOT of design liberties turning Micro Change toy linked to above into a character. Conversely, though, the fact that 10302 made a point of trying to accurately replicate Battle Convoy's original function and transformation into Lego made its shortcomings as a buildable figure more excusable, while this Bumblebee set has to take more liberties in order for the robot mode to resemble the colloquial "G1" drawn design, so the barebones static legs feel more disappointing than authentic.

If anyone is handing out sledge hammers I’ll take one!
Thing I find funny is: Lego is doing/has done this waaaay better than Has-was (Rest In Pieces Kre-O:D). But when I think about it: that could be said about many 'licensers' of their stuff...and it also makes me wonder/think: How can the 'creator' of I.P.s (ok, in fairness Takara created TFs and Has. just marketed 'em to the moon...) treat their properties so poorly that others have to prop them up...:|
"without the need for disassembly."
Well, apart from taking the windscreen off and moving it round the back at the end... this is just a cut and paste press release, right ?
I think you have to switch the 2x2 printed tile with the AUTOBOT symbol to be in the chest after transformation
Yeah, much like the Lambo this car looks awful as well. I thought Optimus was okay as a truck but Bumblebee is supposed to be a Beetle. This is not a Beetle. And as a Robot it looks off as well.
I think it looks pretty decent. I was never super into Transformers so Prime was too expensive for my tastes, but I might pick up this one.
If LEGO plans ton continue this line, they need to start doing some Decepticons. I'm sure some, like Megatron, won't fit in LEGO's values, but ones like Starscream or Soundwave (including his cassettes!) should be do-able.
I've seen every transformers movie, but I won't get this because it's UG-LY!
I like it. Then again, I am old enough to have grown up with Transformers G1 as a kid, so I'm definitely biased.
I absolutely HATE the Bayverse version of Transformers and am so glad LEGO went with this version of Bumblebee to match Optimus. The transforming function appears neat and the robot version looks good to me. Yes, the car mode isn't ideal, but you can't have everything. Plus I would likely leave it in robot mode anyway, so no biggie imho.
Wow, that Beetle looks awful!
I appreciate the trying thought.
Would Lego be willing to make Starscream? There have been sets that are pretty much fighter jets, but that seems like it might be a bit too far from them. There's definitely a bit of an Indiana Jones-type problem with villains for this franchise, but the tape deck guy should be fine.
"Roll out your wallet Transformers."
Why is this even a set? Pass and save my money for a root canal.

Well there are two major different components here: maintaining an IP, which is about brand management and cultural products, and designing a toy or line, which is about product management and production standards. Those aren't the same thing at all. More specifically, just because Hasbro is an experienced toy maker doesn't mean their expertise applies to all classes of toys. Lego product design in particular is a result of a multi-generational culture and specific product standards that Hasbro couldn't replicate. And in the modern era, it has become quite popular for toymakers to license out their own IP to companies that have that experience, especially when there are strong brand identities that can pair up in a collaboration. Beyond this example, Mattel has also produced Transformers Hot Wheels. Lego branded plush toys use brick and minifigure visual design standards, but they are produced by a partner, and no one would expect that Lego could or should become a plushies manufacturer just because there's interest in that product. Put more simply, it's apples and oranges, and Hasbro decided they should stick with one fruit in particular.
I have no interest in it, but it looks like it should and no doubt the first one sold well if they are doing another.
Not perfect but still better than any Bayverse Transformer.
Why would Bumblebee be from the live action movies? That wouldn’t make sense with the Optimus Prime that they made. This looks good for what the source material is.
This is my first time commenting on anything as a new member.
I like that the set is affordable, it just doesn't look that great compared to Prime.
I was really looking forward to building Megatron. At least I hope this means the next one should be Megatron and after him, his sidekick Soundwave. Now we talkin.
Soundwave being a pretty square build should make the transition seamlessly.
PD.: I'n not in Colombia, why would it put that?
The car mode looks like the taxi from Who Frame Roger Rabbit.
It even has the wheel on the back. Just take off the hood and put some black on it.
Oh yes. This isn't perfect. But still great. At this scale though, there is no excuse for it not to have knees. Also, judging by the release pattern, it'll be another 2 years until we get the next one, and I need a Decepticon to go with Prime and Bee. Megatron and Starscream are probably out of the question, considering they turn into a military aircraft and just a literal GUN. Soundwave though would work fantastically. They could even do a GWP with some of the cassettes!

Thank you, I thought it didn't look quite right. I was on the fence, but I think the scale being that off takes this one off of the list. I still like it, but there's just too many sets to choose from.
For all those decepticon fans, I noticed in the comments on the official launch post on Instagram, that Lego replied with "eyeballs" emoji when someone said about Optimus needing a Decepticon now.
Hopefully, that's a hint they're on it.

Well yeah, it's intended to be G1 Bumblebee, even down to the simple transformation of the original toy -- which explains his proportions. The vehicle mode could've been a whole lot better though."
Yeah, I understand what you are saying.
Nevertheless, the whole thing is a reformulation of the original. I think the model could have benefited from a design that gave us a little more robot and a little less stick figure.

Like any of us wouldn't act like a kid in a candy store if we were where he was in that video.
This is a bit of a letdown after the wonderful Optimus Prime. Vehicle doesn't look very accurate, all rather simplified and there is disassembly as the split front windscreen is used to form the jetpack. And why does the logo magically move from the bonnet to the roof? Hmm, will pass on this.

True. Yet, he acts that way all the time. It was the same on Lego Masters.
He's a nice enough person. It's just the omnipresent breathless awe and emotion are too much for me. My son likes him.
@Ayliffe:
The transformation reminds me of some of the larger G1 characters, like Jazz. First thing that caught my attention was the shin panels.

not sure about this one
The comments were reminding me of this advert I saw about Optimus racing to fix cars and only to be told by the car owner they were too late.
I can't remember whether I used to like transformers or not. So that tells me I must save for other sets.
"invite new audiences to play out the battle between good and evil" when LEGO still hasn't made any evil Transformers, lol
(unless you're into the fan theory that Bayformers Optimus is a psycho killer, which he kind of is)
I probably would have liked Transformers if they'd been released 20 years earlier... Major Matt Mason for me, and Lego of course (before it became compulsory to SHOUT the name)!

I like Michael Bay and I like Transformers. But I struggled so much with one of those Transformers movies that I couldn't watch any of the rest (probably to my own detriment). I just remember Optimus like murdering Decepticons in a rage and I was like notmyoptimus.
It's nice but I was hoping for Dodge version.

"Give me your face!" has become something of a running gag in the Transformers fan community (formerly referred to as Transfans, although why that fell out of favor should be obvious) for a reason. And @yellowcastle: I very much enjoyed the first Bay Transformers movie, but liked the series less and less as time went on. Until Bumblebee, and not just because it was about my all-time favorite Transformer, and featured him in his G1 alt-mode. Bay was no longer directing, and I think that helped it, as I, for one, was getting tired of his excesses.

I'm still in my post-Baradur funk. I called Lego two more times to try to get an answer. I kept my emails showing my order within the first 15 min of when it went on sale. They keep promising to investigate and get back to me. Bupkis.
I'm seriously thinking of suing them just for the fun of it!
hahahahaha,...oh my god,....
just laughably bad...
it's not even an actual transformation, since you have to stick the front wind-screen on seperately, And that might be a VW beetle, but only to blind people...

Removing one part does not make it "not even an actual transformation," as multiple Transformers (as in, the ones from Hasbro/TakaraTomy) have required removal of more than that to complete their transformations. A toy that does this is known in the Transformers fan community as a "partformer." https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Partformer Appropriately "Lego-former" is also a term that sees use. Side note: I've been linking to TFWiki in comments here a lot recently, and not just because of this set.

(…diligently flipping through my spells book for Depulso….)
Optimus Prime was a unique piece and a fun idea, although not without its flaws with central structural support, but it was a nice idea nonetheless.
Bumblebee is not only a dull character but this model is just looks bad in both bot and vehicle modes.
I didn't think a version of the character this year could outmatch the disaster of Hasbro's SS86 Bee but yeah, Lego nailed it.
We needed Megatron to go opposite Prime. That would've been a better way to mark the 40th anniversary as you could have the 2 figures re-enacting the fight on the dam from 'More Than Meets The Eye' as a diorama piece.

I'm well aware that it's not considered to be a good thing, but it's still considered a transformation, just not a very good one.

Yeah, but they still obtained a very similar esthetic -- just pricier. ;-)
This is coming from a LONG time Transformers and LEGO fan. The LEGO Optimus Prime and LEGO Bumblebee just aren't doing it for me. I understand how difficult it probably is to make transforming robots out of LEGO, but a lot of the issues I have with these sets has to do with parts that don't contribute to or affect the transformation at all.
