McLaren P1 revealed!
Posted by Huw,
Here's the press release for the McLaren P1, the fifth in the series of Technic ultimate cars:
42172 McLaren P1
3,893 pieces, rated 18+
€449.99 / £389.99 / $449.99 / 589.99 CAD / 699.99 AUD
Available from 1st August 2024 at LEGO.com
The British supercar maker McLaren Automotive and the LEGO Group today unveil their latest collaboration, paying tribute to the world’s most pioneering hybrid hypercar, with the introduction of the LEGO Technic McLaren P1.
The McLaren P1 redefined automotive high-performance as the most exciting, most capable, most technologically advanced and most dynamically accomplished supercar of its time. The P1 leveraged McLaren’s advanced motorsport-based engineering, featuring ground-breaking advances in weight reduction, packaging, high-speed performance, powertrain and aerodynamics.
Created with the intention of being ‘the best driver’s car in the world on both road and track’, the design and technical specifications of the McLaren P1 provided the ideal foundation to deliver on this ambition. The remarkable hypercar is recognised as a landmark both for McLaren and the development of high-performance hybrid vehicles.
The incredible engineering and technology underpinning the performance, style and functional design the McLaren P1, made it the perfect challenge for the LEGO Technic team to replicate in 1:8 scale.
Unveiled as part of the LEGO Technic Ultimate Car Concept Series, the all-new 1:8 scale LEGO Technic version consists of 3,893 elements and each car features a unique serial number which unlocks special behind-the-scenes content, it has a 7-speed gearbox with 2 shifter drums, suspension, V8 piston engine, adjustable rear wing, and opening dihedral doors with advanced mechanism – all guaranteeing an immersive building experience from start to finish that is authentic to the real McLaren P1.
The model was created by the LEGO Technic design team in close collaboration with McLaren Automotive and both teams were focused on implementing as much cutting-edge functionality in the model as possible, as a tribute to both the real P1 and the engineering excellence that McLaren is known for.
Tobias Sühlmann Chief Design Officer, McLaren Automotive said “It’s amazing to see so many of the elements from the original P1 brought to life by the LEGO team for the LEGO Technic McLaren P1. I hope this collaboration inspires the next generation of designers and engineers to push the boundaries of automotive innovation.”
From the exterior with aerodynamic shapes to the interior and V8 piston engine - the real McLaren P1 is an incredible car. We wanted to capture these details in the best way possible with our LEGO Technic model, and we did not want to compromise in any way." says Kasper Rene Hansen, Designer, LEGO Group.
“Therefore, we worked on multiple variations of the car to test different designs. We also faced a huge challenge with the iconic butterfly doors because they needed a new mechanism to stay open. It was a great experience to recreate the McLaren P1, and I’m hoping all supercar enthusiasts out there are ready to explore the details and intricacies of the real McLaren P1 in LEGO Technic form.”
The LEGO Technic McLaren P1 set will be available at www.LEGO.com/McLaren and LEGO Stores from 1st August 2024. When purchasing the set between 1st – 7th August, LEGO Insiders will receive the LEGO Technic McLaren P1 Logo as a gift with purchase.

Love the colour, and it looks amazing
Nice looking model, instantly recognizable. Technic gaps minimized. $450 though...yeesh. Not for me. I am looking forward to the review though, especially the photo of all 5 lined up.
Oh, and the top view on the plaque looks like an athletic supporter hahaha
Never been one for the big technic cars, but I will say it looks very appealing.
I don't buy this line up, but there is no denying they are beautiful sets.
looks good but idk why, it feels like its fake lego
LOB
These sets are very well designed and (probably) great to build and display, but it's £89.99 more than I paid for my first (real) car!
If they did a Speed Champions version, I'd get it A Keetorange SC set would be awesome! But even if I had the space and the full use of both hands, I'm not really interested. I'll admit that I'd probably enjoy building it, but I have no desire to display such a thing, even if I had unlimited display space.
According to the provided text, the door mechanism was one of the more demanding item of the design - yet there are no pictures of said mechanism (doors are closed on all pictures).
Comes with the traditional handbag... (hence the high price)
There are some new parts in there - which is good.
@Huw is not going to like this - seems like there are quite a few 'system' parts in there.
It looks great but F1 was and still is more iconic.
I like it, however I still have the other three unbuilt!
It is a bit more of the same though, clever and well designed as it is.
Still I like cars so....
Maybe when it drops to £250 ish, like the others I might pick it up. At rrp no way!

Yes, and you know why?
Because there have been countless supercars of this size and shape by other manufacturers for several years now. Licensed ones, stolen MOCs, fantasy vehicles that just look similar. They're almost a dime a dozen.
That's also my main gripe about the P1 in general, in that it might have been an important technological step, but the design is so terribly bland and interchangeable.

Yeah, I wouldn't go as far as calling the P1 a "legend" as they did in the teaser.
As a fan of the F1 I'm a bit disappointed, but not surprised. This set looks cool, probably the best-looking one of the line so far. At least that's my first spontaneous reaction. I have none of them, time will tell if I finally get this one, but it won't be on release that's for sure.
From a distance it looks nice, but up close I think it severely lacks smoothness. Everything is so made up of loose parts. Not for me this time.
And the lack of actual new features is a recurring frustration for me. There are countless interesting features on real cars that no-one will ever find out by building another newly released Technic model. Which I find a shame.

I would call the P1 a modern legend, or at least an icon among hypercars. One that has established itself in supercar history as the Holy Trinity along with its competitors Laferrari and Porsche 918. Of course, "Holy Trinity" is highly subjective, but I think most supercar enthusiast will imediately know which cars it refers to.
I prefer my Bumblebee I just built!
Not sure why Lego have released a 10yr old car rather than a current model - all the previous supercars in this series were new/current when the Lego rendition was introduced.
The P1 was actually out of production when the Technic 991 GT3 came out!
Did they really make this with no stickers? :O
Looks great, not my line but I'm happy for those who like these sets.

That's why I am going to buy the CaDa AMG One. Not only is it fully motorized (including doors and rear spoiler), not only does it have lighting, no, it even has a true functioning and remote controlled "hybrid" system.
Oh and it's about half the price of this one too.
No-brainer actually, if one loves licenced Technic cars with lots of functions and great looks.

Complainers will always complain, I guess. And with @AustinPowers we have a prime example here.
I think it looks absolutely fine. Not my area of interest, but I can absolutely see the appeal for car nuts and McLaren fans. After all, the P1 is the car that really kickstarted McLaren's current design language. I am more of a vintage Alfa and Porsche fan, but I realize that that is a niche market that LEGO is not interested in.
As to why the P1 was chosen, I am 99% sure that this was McLaren's choice. Yes, the F1 is also more iconic to me, but do realize that the current McLaren Automotive company/management did not really have a large hand in creating that car (if any).

The same could be said for any large set.
I was planning to cobble one together from an orange P1 moc-knock-off and a keetorange Sian knock-off, but now I don't have to!
That one does use a better part for the exhaust though: the airscoop (that was also a scala horse-feeding bucket) on 8465.
Looking forward to the RacingBrick review

Well, as long as LEGO keeps producing sets like this where it's so blindingly obvious what the better choice would be I will keep giving that information. I get regular feedback from happy people who said they didn't know about what great choices they had since they had never heard of such things before.
You're welcome.
Also, if LEGO produced a set with the features, functionality, quality and value for money of the set I mentioned, I wouldn't need to complain in the first place.
LEGO is trying to make people believe this set would be something oh so special, when in reality it's less than a quarter of the functions for almost twice the price.
But hey, if people are happy getting less for more, I am not going to stop them. It's their money, not mine.
And lastly, why is having an opinion on something always complaining to you? The fact that I find vehicles like this bland and interchangeable is not complaining.
Complaining would be to say "I want McLaren to make more distinct vehicles". I never said that, because I frankly don't care what they do as long as there are more interesting alternatives.
I got the Lambo and the ford gt (not really sure if that one counts) but when I got the lambo it was $370 this is ridiculous. I probably would have the Ferrari but the price is the same as this
*sigh
I mean it looks good I guess, but it's still not a Technic set. For crying out loud, bring back Racers and stick these into the theme. Make some space for actual Technic sets.
Flame Yellowish Orange is an EXTREMELY bold color choice. I like it!

Just out of curiosity, 450 is indeed much dinero, but here in Europe this set will probably be available at 30% discount a few months after release. And discounted to 40% if you pay attention. For example: the Ferrari Daytona MSRP in Switzerland is 489 CHF, but the set can easily be had for 320 CHF, which is about 35% discount.
How is the market in the USA? Do you also get these serious discounts on such large sets (soon after release), or is that rather an exception?
In the USA, we rarely get discounts on sets that cost more than $100, and below $100 we only get 20% discounts several months after a set's release date. Before 2019 we got 20% discounts soon after release, but not anymore. If you're really savvy at tracking clearance prices at major retailers you can often get a big set for 30% off or better, but that's hit or miss. You can't count on it, and you have to buy right then.

How. Is. This. Not. A. Technic. Set. ???????
(Oooooow... I get it..... Technic should focus on crude representations of actual mechanic things without licensing that noone except a hard core niche fanbase will buy.... Yeah, that will be an attractive business proposal for the largest toy company in the world whose primary goal is to attract new clients and hopefully have them coming back)
It will probably use the gearbox elements from the Yamaha, otherwise I'd expect the build experience to be very similar to the previous 4. There's market and a target audience for these.
I have the Porsche and the Lambo. Both were fun to build, both will go back in their boxes to be sold. Space for Lego in our house is finite...

Not entirely. This kind of yellow has been one of McLarens core colour offerings ever since they launched the P1. Look for Tavarish's videos on YouTibe where he attempts to restore a flooded P1 in exactly this colour. Also, the first P1 production model was in this colour combination, and I would not be surprised if the colour choice was a McLaren decision to replicate that car.

Nope. :o(
And nowadays, almost nothing on exclusives even when Amazon/Target pick them up.
To start positive: I think it looks pretty good, they captured the shape quite well (only those flex axles on the doors look off), and surprisingly minimal gaps. And not that many blue pins in sights.
But other than that.....feels like just more of the same, no interesting features whatsoever. Maybe those doors? The pictures don't exaclty do a good job to sell that. And sure, there's obviously only so much you can do with cars like these, but they could at least try something.
But the most baffling thing is the choice of the P1 in the first place. A 12 year old car that didn't really have a lasting legacy. Did they even race it? it sure doesn't come anywhere close to the legendary F1. And since the P1, McLaren has made so many other cars, both their bread and butter models and the Ultimate series, that I feel the P1 is kinda forgotten.

I always find this kind of comment weird because in the years when Technic sets were branded as Racers, the "Technic" theme itself was quite small. Chances are it was still the main Technic theme responsible for Technic-based Racers sets, so it's not like rebranding sets like this would somehow free up more resources for the Technic theme in any way, shape or form.

Oh, I wasn't referring to it being out of the ordinary for McLaren, but rather being a less common color for Technic sets. It's very vibrant and interesting, but only a couple Technic sets have used it as a main color before.
Another day, another supercar shelf ornament with a triple digit price tag.
TLG's cash cow since 2020 when many US adults were confined to their homes and given stimulus cash to burn. It keeps the company healthy, and has been a spur to many more ICONS and 18+ sets.
Just NMCOT.

Well 18 might be a bit extravagant!
Another one? I like the color, although it also reminds me of the orange one that was the first of this price range in recent times.
It looks fine, as someone who knows very little about cars. To me it just feels like... another one.
Too close in colour to the Porsche, possibly enough to make me not buy it. Yellow would have been good.

Well sometimes but definitely not right after they release. If they do ever go really cheap it’s around Christmas time or Black Friday. I believe the Ferrari hasn’t gone any lower that $10 off.
I have seen the Bugatti really cheap a while back.
And the Lambo went down to $270 for Black Friday right after I bought it.
And if we’re counting smaller cars to the Peugeot is twenty percent off right now.
I think it looks good, but I had the GT3RS and found the build a bit of a bore if I’m honest.
I think the only thing that could tempt me back would be a F40…..
Well, that or a massive discount!!
Seriously, TLG should just fold Technic into Speed Champions and call it a day at this point.

So tell us, which expensive sets do you keep buying ?
I got the first three, but after a certain point they’re all kind of the same. The gearboxes aren’t different, the internals (suspension, steering, spoiler wing, doors) are included in each. It’s like if you built one, you built them all.
They’re beautiful sets, and look great lined up together, but for the prices I’d like to see more innovation in the builds.

Happy to oblige.
After all, wouldn't the comment section be boring (and kind of pointless tbh) if everyone always agreed on everything? Where's the fun in that?
Otoh people like @MrBedhead would probably prefer it if I didn't comment at all anymore, because they rather want to be around people who agree with their opinions.
As in "if you despise LEGO so much (which I don't btw) why even bother spending your time on Brickset?"
I've purchased all of this series including the Ferrari and I should have stopped before that one. They are impressive sets but there isn't enough change between them to justify the ever-increasing cost. I've managed to sell the 911 and I'm just waiting for the demand to increase so I can sell the rest.

So on one hand you're already refusing to spend more on these sets yet at the same time you are waiting for demand to go up just so you can sell them for even more ? What makes you think others aren't already thinking the same as you ? Time for Lego to increase their prices again by at least 20-30%, it's the only way to end scalping
Looks fine. Would never build it though. Currently building the Technic Ford GT. It’s hell on Earth. No more Technic for a year for me so I can recover.

There's more to the line than supercar sets that cost hundreds of dollars; there are sets that are only one hundred, and even some that can be had for less than twenty bucks.

Given the limitations of making things out of plastic bricks, Lego can only ever be a "crude representation" but still Technic designers have made some incredible mechanisms. 42179 is an example. An unlicensed set that was released this year, so apparently the company did find it an attractive enough proposal.
I guess I must be part of a "hardcore niche fanbase" because for me no Lego Technic supercar has ever surpassed 8880 in terms of Technic-ness. I find all the functions fascinating. Maybe to some people it is a "crude representation" and prefer the sleek panelled look. I like to think there is room for both.

Amazon is a joke for LEGO purchases these days. Th ey used to undercut everyone by a significant amount. Now it’s PROFITS PROFITS PROFITS!
First one of these large cars that I like the look of.
Still, very expensive for just opening doors and suspension. At least the engine is visible this time.

I'm just so happy they haven't blocked each other. It gives me hope for the world!
I don't mind the ubiquitous deletions on BS. Lord knows, I keep the poor moderators busy deleting my comments. (Can I tell you what I like to do after I pour out new lego ,pieces onto the floor?..

Yet, to me, the block button is the worst feature on BS. If I really was that worried about others' comments, I wouldn't come here, or at least wouldn't pay attention to reply notifications. It is possible to ignore people, people.
Worse, I accidentally blocked one of the most entertaining and informative commentors on this site. Alas!
@StyleCounselor : I haven't blocked anyone yet, so I wouldn't know, but isn't it possible to unblock someone again if you change your mind?
In any case, people looking for complaints of mine will have a much harder time from now on, since I have decided to reduce my commenting to a minimum. In particular I am not going to complain again, because I have come to realize that it's neither worth my time nor that of the ones reading.
Suffice it to say that I have lost the fun I felt with the hobby, since most current sets just can't give me what I am looking for in a brick set.
I have said it elsewhere, I have turned my attention to hunting down sets from the past that I would have loved to get as a kid but never did.
With every set of that kind I have had the chance to acquire in recent months I have felt so much satisfaction and fun that I simply don't need any of the modern offerings anymore.
That's not even to say that these old sets are better than modern ones, because that's highly subjective, it's just that they are better for me and what I value personally in a LEGO set.
Therefore from now on I will limit my comments to RSTOD, RPOTD and VSOTW, with perhaps an occasional positive comment if there's a new set announced that pleasantly surprises me in some way.
So, all those who are sick of my complaining can rejoice now, and I can spend my time with what I enjoy much more.
See ya.
@AustinPowers: Here's hoping you get the chance to complain about the RPotD again soon.

" @StyleCounselor : I haven't blocked anyone yet, so I wouldn't know, but isn't it possible to unblock someone again if you change your mind?
In any case, people looking for complaints of mine will have a much harder time from now on, since I have decided to reduce my commenting to a minimum. In particular I am not going to complain again, because I have come to realize that it's neither worth my time nor that of the ones reading.

Yes, it's super easy to unblock someone. (Poor Prof. Plum... strike that... poor me!).
I don't know if you remember, but one of my first comments on BS was when you declared that you would stop commenting. As I said then, you're my favorite grumpy German commentor.
Here's hoping you unblock yourself, soon! Some of us appreciate perspectives that incorporate knowledge with difference. Some of us like a little salt with our beef, and some bitters in our drink.
See ya Space Cowboy!...

I don't mind if you stop complaining, as long as you do keep giving us your honest oppinions! Even if those happen to be not quite so positive ;-)

No more complaints.
@StyleCounselor: no, this time is definite.

Well... now... I have some complaints about that! What the hell am I supposed to do?!
Does this have something to do with those English soccer hooligans invading your country? Don't worry.
They'll soon be gone, leaving nothing but the faint wiff of urine, spilt beer, and sadness to go with the odd hint of ganja smoke and faint lamentations drifting softly on the air of something nearly incoherent about "foo'boohwl n'evah 'omin' 'ome."

I used to hate this color when it first came out, but now I love it. Getting new parts in this color is now great.

To be honest, it's why I try to read every thread to see what he's managed to complain about this time."
Well, as long as LEGO keeps producing sets like this where it's so blindingly obvious what the better choice would be I will keep giving that information. I get regular feedback from happy people who said they didn't know about what great choices they had since they had never heard of such things before.
You're welcome.

I'm just here to confirm that the people really do exist who are grateful to @AustinPowers for suggesting alternative highly sophisticated interlocking brick systems; I've bought some Sluban fighter jets and they are superb.
Cheers for that, AP!
@AustinPowers
And please do keep complaining; I, for one, value you telling it like it is.
