Review: McLaren P1 logo
Posted by Huw,
Those who buy 42172 McLaren P1 at LEGO.com during the first week of August will receive 6535735 McLaren P1 logo as a gift with purchase.
It was much derided in the comments of our article when it was revealed a few weeks ago but having just built it, I've concluded that it's actually quite a decent model which harbours an interesting mechanism.
Summary
6535735 McLaren P1 Logo, 178 pieces.
A decent GWP for Technic fans with an interesting mechanism inside
- Better than it first appears
- Printed TM tile
- Limited availability
The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.
It comes in one of the square yellow boxes with the front cover of the instructions forming the picture on the front. It's heavier than most sets packed in that way and its 178 pieces only just fit in it. Note that the version shipped in the US will have a different number.
The base is about 12cm x 9cm and open on all sides bar the front, so the mechanism, which is operated by turning the red handle on the left, can be clearly seen.
The TM tile tacked on the side of the '1' looks ridiculous and is best removed. Its redeeming quality is that, surprisingly, it's printed, something not normally done for sets like this.
Here's a view with the front cover removed:
When the handle is rotated clockwise, the P1 logo turns about 20 degrees from side-to side. When it's rotated anti-clockwise, it also does so and, additionally, a panel with a McLaren logo pops up.
This is best demonstrated with a video:
It might not be everyone's idea of an enticing gift with purchase, but I think Technic fans will enjoy it, particularly as kinetic sculptures are so rare, so it's the perfect GWP for those forking out for the McLaren early in its lifecycle.
It'll be a GWP for Insiders who buy 42172 McLaren P1 at LEGO.com from 1st to the 7th August, or while stocks last.

Uhmmm... still no need to rush.
That pop-up McLaren logo, is that also a print?
It's still a weird set with a rather complicated mechanism for very little effect, but on the other hand, with a diff and those rings it does have a few interesting pieces you wouldn't expect in such a small set.
Trying to remember the last Technic GWP, so possibly useful set of spare beams, gears etc., although for under 200 pieces a really scaled down version of the P1 could have being fun to amuse a younger family member while Dad is distracted on the main build.
It’s Lego, but it’s still tat.
At least it's true to the core of Technic in that it's about a mechanism. In fact, it's not a car for once, which is rare to see. You can even see the mechanism in action from the back! And for what it does it does more than I expected!
That said... unless you really love McLaren as a brand I doubt this would be something to get excited over. It feels like extra advertising. Which I guess is appropriate enough for a GWP. At least it's not something needlessly desirable and/or a great would-be affordable-price-range set that is now locked to immediate buyers only for no reason except greed. I wouldn't mind if more GWPs would be like this again.
I mean everyone was complaining that the supercars don't have interesting mechanisms, and this looks like it's got some cool innards! It puts me in mind of the old Technic educational sets that were all about understanding mechanical principles.
(I've concluded that it's a) Pretty meh promo tbh.
Relative to its size and piece count, this set has more Technic than all those Technic cars themselves.
It might not be the most interesting set of functions, but at least it has got them, and you can watch them in action too.
Not that this would entice me to try and get one, especially since McLaren isn't a car brand I am interested in, but I appreciate the effort.
So primitive
...but why? This thing is an total oddball, and they even went to the trouble of printing the TM. I don't understand the need for this to exist.
NORMIES LOVE IT
Hard pass on this, but still tempted to get 42172 though during the next double insider points window.

Yes, it's also used in the car.
A pretty perfect, set specific GWP. Not of appeal for all Lego fans, but a fascinating novelty freebie for those getting the car. I'm sure it will be long gone before 7th Aug.

According to the database, this and 30433 have been the only Technic GWPs. https://brickset.com/sets/tag-Gift-with-Purchase/theme-Technic
Could I pay more to.... NOT get this GWP?

Use my address when ordering. I’ll ensure you never receive this set OR the P1. And I won’t even charge you for the privilege.
I hope that Trademark logo is showing up in other sets, I like it.

Probably never as we have not been sent it and I'm certainly not going to be buying a second P1!"
@Huw - Just showed up in the post?
It looks like one of the designers had an idea for a neat mechanism they wanted to build, and then went looking for an excuse to do it.
Doctors have long warned that if you shake your P the wrong way, something bad will pop up.

Almost, yes. We are not often told until after they've been dispatched when we are being sent GWPs.

30682 was a GWP in May.
“Derided” I learned a new word today! When I first saw this GWP I was hoping it was a rotating stand for the actual set, how neat would that be, but I deride this GWP.
It still just looks like something built with leftover parts.

I'd been thinking it might have been, but I'm not the one who adds the tags.
I thought this thing would turn 360 degrees and it can't even do that.
Not many people would want to sit there winding a crank to make some silly logo go around.
There will be those that try and think up some excuse to defend this, but seriously, who would actually want this??
Another example of Lego making a super random set and trying to claim people want it.
If there are Technic fans that enjoy this as a parts pack then happy for you guys but jesus Lego must be getting desperate.
Time to submit a TAA (Trans-Australia Airlines) buildable logo to Lego IDEAS. A nice big logo that requires lots of pieces so costs over $100. Very niche obviously and unasked for! A guaranteed winner for Lego!
Now that really is rubbish.
Derision from comments section whingers...
Pretty much a guaranteed success then!
PU, again.
Oh
It's a very dinky thing that nobody would buy on its own. Look at it. It's a glorified box of spare parts...
However, it does come with the P1. So I guess that's cool.
Brickchap said:"I thought this thing would turn 360 degrees and it can't even do that."
To be fair, what it does do is more impressive.
"Another example of Lego making a super random set and trying to claim people want it."
It's a GWP tied to the purchase of a specific set, so people who don't want it are free to wait on buying 42172; Lego's not expecting people to buy it.

But they are expecting people 'want' it given it is included. I highly doubt anyone buying 42172 wants this set. We've already seen the reactions in the comments.
It's so random and weird. Good GWPs are ones that are nice little builds. Nothing exclusive or super desirable so as to make people miss out, but not so random and pointless (like this) that everyone asks why does it even exist.
Some of the Creator polybags are nice GWPs.

Sadly you've fallen into the typical comment section belief. You don't like it, therefore nobody likes it, therefore it shouldn't exist.
The true popularity amongst Brickset members will be shown in time by the 'owned by' numbers on the database. The comments section often shows no more than just how out of touch with reality commenters are.

Seriously mate, you actually want to defend ^this^?? I can assure you there's definitely no young people or tiktokers or present-hunting parents or whatever lining up to get a Technic half winding MacLaren logo.
You seem to have fallen into the typical Cult of Lego mantra that everything Lego ever does is perfect and right and just, a saving grace for humanity. Anyone who questions them are "out of touch with reality" heretics.
If you do see heaps of people in real life lining up to get this, let me know :)

It won't be owned by me; I can guarantee you that.

Wow, so you think you speak for all young people, all tiktokers, and all parents. That rather proves my point!

Nope, I find a lot of Lego to be total crap, but I accept that me not liking something doesn't mean that nobody does.
And, for the record, I have no interest in the P1 so won't be getting it or the GWP, but I have no doubt that the database will show that plenty do.

No, I meant there isn't some large demographic who you can refer to who will want this.
Considering you yourself won't even be getting this and have no interest in it, I'm curious why you're so desperate to defend it.
I am confident there will not be "plenty" of people who like this. It should be noted that the amount owned is not a good measure of whether people actually want this since various consumers will end up with this when they buy the P1 (whether they like it or not)

Personally I'd expect most people who weren't keen to get the GWP to wait for a bit until it's inevitably cheaper, but I'll bow to your amazing psychic powers :-)
@Brickchap: @sjr60 simply said that they won't be getting it. That could be for a number of reasons. Yes, it could very well mean they don't have interest in it, but it could also mean they can't afford, don't have interest in, or don't have the space for 42172. Myself, I don't have any interest in 42172, nor do I have the space to build or display it, so I won't be getting this GWP, although I would like to get a look at its mechanism.

Yep, exactly the same. Plus there are several other August releases I'll be getting to get the repeat of 40712 Micro Rocket Launchpad (providing that the UK gets the same GWPs as Aus has)
Would like to get a digital version of the instructions, anyone knows where to get this?
