LEGO has revealed three Chinese Traditional Festival (CTF) sets and two Monkie Kid models at the 2024 China International Import Expo, which is currently taking place in Shanghai.

The subject matter may not mean much to some of us here in the west, but the CTF sets once again look to be exceptional, although not as packed with minifigs as they usually are. They will probably be good value, too.

View photos after the break, and keep up to date with everything that's been officially revealed for next year in our 2025 set listing.

40813 Lucky Cat

40813-1

80116 Trotting Lantern

80116-1

80117 Good Fortune

80117-1

80065 Celestial Mech

80065-1

80066 Mythical Creature Qilin

80066-1

That cat has no studs.

(Sigh) It's definitely the Year of the Snake. (sigh)

These are underwhelming. I really don't want more display models. Where are the traditional playsets?

booo bring back the playsets. second worst news i've seen today.

By in United States,

CTF sets are by far the sets I look forward to most each year. It was disappointing to me but understandable to drop from two playsets to one playset and one large model each year. However, this feels cheap, with the minifigure cuts, taking an ax to what is usually a stand out theme. I guess I was running out of space for CTF sets anyway...

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I really like that cat, will probably pick it up early in the year. Not sure yet about the other two, though the lantern does look impressive!

Are those dumplings in the lantern set?

By in South Africa,

Yeah, bring back the playsets. I want to see something I could put into a city, not another dust-gatherer I won't have space for on the shelf.

I really like 80117, it's a nice piece. I like the lantern but I'm less sure about it. Is it only the top that opens, or does the bottom too?

I'll give the rest a pass.

I don't much care for the lantern, although the snake-headed figure seems like he's going to be used again in the collectable minifig series (for another fig with an animal costume).

By in France,

The sets designed for the Chinese market are so slick and so well done that they almost don't even look like something TLG would design. Really wish we could get this level of polish for other releases.

Looking at that Monkie Kid mech, I can see knee joints, something that isn't a guarantee with mechs of that size within that line. Definitely getting that one. Maybe the lucky cat too, but the other sets aren't exciting enough.

Wasn't there a bubble gum machine ideas set where LEGO asked what color spaceman would be dispensed from the machine? Gold seemed to be the prevailing choice, but this could be a hint LEGO went with light blue.

I find it distasteful. You wonder if they’re even making a profit on these sets or taking a hit in order to ‘crack the Chinese market’. But then they’re putting all this effort into a market run by a vicious communist dictatorship.

It the big head orange clown universe, perhaps. In this one, tariffs increase prices due to less competition and the increase in taxes (tariffs).

But, to give you credit, perhaps that was your sarcastic innuendo?

Oh I'm sure they will still make a decent profit on these sets, just maybe not an absurd one like on others like Star Wars or Super Heroes.
That they put in the effort just goes to show that they acknowledge what the competition is offering in China, both in terms of quality as well as in value for money. There are so many (legal) alternative manufacturers there with so many awesomely designed sets at incredibly good prices that LEGO just has to up their game there if they want to have any chance in that particular market.
As for the "communist dictatorship" bit, I must say that I find China a fascinating special case where an openly communist country has managed to (highly) successfully combine the advantages of market economy with those (few but important) aspects that actually do work better in a communist society, let alone a very strict one (I would not go as far as calling it a dictatorship - it's not quite North Korea after all).

But maybe not before @Hobbes can help us find some real estate in Canada…. “Brickset Compound North” has a nice ring to it.

I'm only interested in the dumpling pieces and the snake head. The rest is easy pass so it's going to be either a PaB or a Bricklink order in due time.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was REALLY hoping for some more sets that could be integrated into my city. So I’m pretty disappointed at the new sets in that aspect, they do look very nice though. But because of that they all look like skips for me… money in the bank, or for other sets I suppose.

It's good to have something to look forward to this morning...

All of these sets look really cool. Looking forward to the Monkie Kid sets and the Lucky Cat especially.

Gravatar

Hmm. That new dumpling element (in 80116, leftmost minifig) would, if molded in trans-blue or trans-purple, make a decent float for a Portuguese man o' war (not a jellyfish).

An astonishing amount of Japanese culture was borrowed in from China, the latter being the 800 pound gorilla of SE Asia.

@ChocolateFrog:
It’s a bit more complicated than that. China would give a token slap on the wrist when TLG would protest patent and copyright infringement. In order to actually get some legal justice, they had to open up their own factory in mainland China. Until that point, they weren’t considered to be a “recognizable company”, and enjoyed few legal protections.

But even beyond that, chasing the Chinese market isn’t just about China. Chinese New Year is celebrated by much of SE Asia, so these sets will work for most other countries in that area. Not so much for Japan, but that’s the one market they’ve got an established presence in over there.

@AustinPowers:
I recently learned that China has something akin to credit ratings, but for your social standing. Do something the government doesn’t approve of (but not egregious enough to get “disappeared”), and they’ll penalize your social rating. Get too deep in the hole, and you can’t get a job anymore.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If I didn't already have 40436 and a large backlog of unopened sets to build (as well as a good number of sets that need to be taken apart so I'll have space to build those sets), I'd be sorely tempted to get40813. Oh, and @StyleCounselor, it does have studs, on the side of its legs.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Absolutely love these 3 new Chinese Festival sets, especially the Trotting Lantern. It's a shame that they seem to have run out of ideas for location based sets like 80113, 80111, 80109 and 80107 but that in no way detracts from how excellent these new ones are.

By in United States,

I have almost zero interest in these CNY sets this year. For the rest I will wait for that dumpling part & a few others to appear on PAB in about 8 months. In the past usually at least one of the sets appealed to me as it was a scene or building that I could see using with other sets in my collection. And as I've said before I don't buy mechs so the Monkie Kid sets are not for me either.

I guess, as nice as these sets definitely are, the frustration of many people all over the world over the outcome of said election is so massive that it had to be vented somewhere, so this article was as good as any.

Oh and speaking of which:

@PurpleDave said:
"I know there are restrictions on what can be said in your neck of the woods)."
Oh, anything can (and will) be said over here
The only things said which might get you fined (if you even get caught saying them in the first place) are Nazi related, or certain kinds of hate speech.
Which are utterances that anyone should be prosecuted for anyway imho - anywhere in the world by the way.

But apparently, thanks to the 1st. Amendment you mentioned, in your country such people are free to use vicious hate speech, lies, and agitation as much as they like. Hell, they can (and will) even be voted into the highest office in the country - even as a convicted criminal.
Why do I feel such strong 1933 Germany parallels?
All I can say is god help us all over the coming years.

Zero, of course. 5626 is a full model, which, when assembled as shown, leaves zero points where you can attach an anti-stud. All you have left to work with are some bar connections.

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"
- Evelyn Beatrice Hall

Perhaps the most important SCOTUS ruling of my lifetime is when they unanimously, and emphatically, upheld the 1st Amendment protections of free speech for even hate speech. Part of the reasoning is that to do anything else requires that someone be allowed to designate what constitutes hate speech, and that leads to Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. And the other reason is that criminalizing it doesn't make it go away. It just forces it underground, where you can't keep an eye on it.

Gravatar

Gravatar
By in Germany,

@PurpleDave: criminalizing it, as practice over here shows, doesn't force it underground. There are still more than enough people in this country who are proud to show Nazi symbols, shout their slogans or things like "expell foreigners". There's even a (relatively new) political party (plus a second, even newer one that shares part of the others' ideology) that thrives on these racist views and has even won their first election in one of our Eastern Federal states exactly because of their hateful agenda. History is beginning to repeat itself it seems.
What is especially sad is that now these exact same racist views are able to win elections in a country that has historically helped rid our country of just that evil after the worst war in the history of mankind.

Even in the U.S., hate speech can be used to enforce jurisdiction (making it a federal crime), as an element of the crime (e.g., harassment, lewd speech), increasing the severity (hate crime), or as a sentencing factor.

I wouldn't know which larger set holds the record, but two contenders that come to my mind could be 21327 and 71411
Many of these large display type sets feature very few visible studs.

And with tariffs on all imports leading to lower inflation you will have more money for more sets. That's how it works now. right? "

It the big head orange clown universe, perhaps. In this one, tariffs increase prices due to less competition and the increase in taxes (tariffs).

But, to give you credit, perhaps that was your sarcastic innuendo?

The last time we experimented with high tariffs was... hmmm, what was it? Oh, yeah, The Great Depression.

Hyena, huh.

This sounds like something a character in some show would say after tricking the villain into saying something then clicking the stop button on the recorder. Except it makes no sense here... like what did you trick them into saying. Are you trying to dox them?

Bought every CTF set so far, but now I'll stick with Good Fortune and gradually let go of the drive for completion.

On Bowser, I can make out no less than 76 attachable studs, and can infer up to at least 80. Tiled mosaics can max out at 12 studs (2x2 corner plate in each corner of the frame), with fairly high piece counts.

I'm alluding to the Maya Angelou quote, which has been popular to cite lately, about believing people when they show you who they are. The implication being that the use of that particular descriptor for that particular public figure is a strong indicator of other traits ("who they are").

Oh, there they are. I wonder what the record is for least amount of studs?"

Zero, of course. 5626 is a full model, which, when assembled as shown, leaves zero points where you can attach an anti-stud. All you have left to work with are some bar connections."

Ok. But, for a larger set, say over 100 pieces, I wonder what's the record?"

I wouldn't know which larger set holds the record, but two contenders that come to my mind could be 21327 and 71411

293 and 294 don't seem intended for display and have no visible studs, at least on the front. So studless models aren't as recent as you might think.

@TheOtherMike: you are right. I totally forgot about the Homemaker type of sets. Probably because they were from before my time.

Hey, I only knew about those two because they've both been VSotW, they were from before my time as well.

By in United Kingdom,

Quite like the lantern to be honest - looks very decorative, but opens up into a little playset, which I like. I don't really play with my Lego, so the fact that it can be either appeals. Depending on the price, I think I'll probably get it, especially given the little Snake guy and the fact that I am rather fond of getting the yearly CNY GWP.

I can understand the complaints though - I have liked the fact that have usually been obvious display pieces or playsets in previous years in this theme.

So, what happened to 80114 and 80115? I had appreciated the numbering consistency with these sets.... Welp, that's gone!

By in Canada,

The Lantern's pretty cool, but I'd definitely prefer more of the amazing playsets from that theme. I'm not too into the huge amount of sculptural sets for the 'adult' audience.

I'm here for MK though. But not incredibly enthused about another Celestial Mech since we already have Nezha's from the wave this year. Frankly I wouldn't mind //more// mechs if they made more of an appearance in the show, rather than only popping up to justify the mech set releases.

That said, the Qilin rocks. Love the combo MK/Mei logo on the side. The show has a joke about the lack of an MK/Mei team-up adventure; wonder if it might've involved this Qilin.
