Disney Advent Calendar - Day 5
Posted by MeganL,
Four days, two princesses, two princess homes. Based on that, might we meet another princess today? Or will there be a change in direction?
Today we have the spinner to be used in the board game that comes with the set. It's unclear what the rules are for the game, but most kids in the target age range for this calendar usually don't have any problems making up their own rules. Each side of the spinner has its own colour.
Now that the spinner is here, the games can begin.

I honestly wasn't too disappointed with the spinner, today. With the printing on the box, we were guaranteed to get something like this, at some point (and this isn't even the first calendar to have such a game. I'm pretty sure there's about one per year, sprinkled through the advent calendar range). Better to get it out of the way early.
One thing has occurred to me, about this calendar, the last day or so. There seem to be very few spoilers on the box. We know there's five princesses (and we can assume, based on Moana, Ariel and the fact that the Madrigal house from 'Encanto' is on the box, that each one will have a mini-build of an iconic location), and Elsa has two connected mini-builds visible on the box ... and that's it. Even with the promise of the big multi-day build at some point in the future, there's a lot of days that they haven't telegraphed at all, and I really like that.
I'm looking forward to being surprised over the next 19 days, or so. That's half the joy of these things.
Does it actually spin well? It doesn't look very ergonomic in its design for if you need to hold it by the looks of it.
My guess:
Light yellow: Moana (because beach)
Green: Ariel (because of her fins?)
Magenta: The girl from Encanto (The house uses the color a lot)
Light blue: Elsa (because ice)

If you look at the board (https://brickset.com/article/115491/disney-advent-calendar-day-1), the squares are color-coded, so It's a way to tell you what space to go to, like with Candy Land.

It does actually. It spins exceptionally well. Or maybe I just have a natural talent?

Yes it does spin well, then whatever colour is top side move the figure that space. It doesn't take too long to play,but my daughter enjoyed it this morning we played twice!

See I assumed the green was Tiana, it’s the colour dress she’s normally portrayed in due to her frog connotations. Or her for light yellow (technically closer to her dress colour) and Ariel for green since it’s her tail colour.
I’m wondering if it’s deliberately vague so the kids playing it can make up their own reasons like we are
I guess I'll be the first to point out that this seems to be a dreidel. Wouldn't be surprised if that was deliberate, considering they did it with the HP calendar a couple of years back too.

I didn't know what a dreidel was until I looked it up. That's just led to an interesting diversion reading about dreidels and teetotums (from which the dreidels derives).

I have a little dreidel
I made it out of Lego
And when it's built and ready
Then I shall know which space to go!
I have many Jewish friends.
Hanukkah starts on Christmas Day, this year. We all get presents on the same day.
@Zordboy:
The only one I remember offhand is 76390, which actually _ended_ on the dreidel. Regarding spoilers, I remember there was one year recently were the SWAC spoiled 24/24 models, and I think it was the HPAC that came in under 50% spoiled.

And the fifth Princess if it stops without falling over?
@Robot99:
Unless the d6 dice mold is still around, a dreidel is a solution that’s easy to implement, using only parts that can easily be fit within the compartment. I do have to wonder if there was some sort of “in my religion…” moment the first time they were brainstorming the idea of making an advent calendar that doubled as a gameboard. Afterwards, the idea is already out there and the next person to use it might not be aware of the history.

I'm Jewish myself, which is probably why I was the first person to take notice here lol. I actually don't celebrate X-mas at all, I'm just reading these articles because I like to see the builds :-)
The dreidel song is fun, but we don't talk about the dreidel made of glass >_>
@PurpleDave
That's fair, considering any alternate solution involves too many pieces, but the fact that in the HP calendar a couple of years ago it was specifically during Hanukkah, I'm leaning towards it being intentional. Although, in that case it was also the final day, so idk. As StyleCounselor mentioned above, Hanukkah this year is after this calendar ends, so it doesn't really matter where they put the dreidel this year.
It occurs to me that the designer of this calendar wanted to make sure that the game would be playable very quickly. Only two days out of the first five have not been dedicated to stuff for it, unless the scenery builds feature in the gameplay somehow, in which case all the builds factor into the game.
@PurpleDave: If I'm remembering right, that die piece required one of the most complex molds Lego had ever made, if not *the* most complex mold.

I’ve heard the mold for the original chain was the most complex mold a former LEGO employee had ever seen. Consider that it’s molded with all the links chained together, and how dinky those links are.
I thought it looked like a 1x1 Rubix cube. those exist by the way.

It's funny that you simultaneously tell us your religion and explain further that you don't celebrate Christmas. I get it. My Jewish friends mostly fall into the category of those that have trees, egg nog, and at least a few presents. Then again, many of them have gentile spouses. Christmas is so ubiquitous (and, historically rooted in commercialism/secularism/paganism), why not have a little extra winter cheer? ;)
Happy Hanukkah!
