Marvel mini bust sets announced!

Posted by ,

LEGO has today announced a new series for the Marvel theme, taking a different approach to the established Helmet Collection. The press release follows:

Today, the LEGO Group is excited to unveil the latest additions to its LEGO Marvel product range: Marvel Super Hero-inspired mini busts for display. Available for pre-order now, builders will be able to recreate Iron Man and Iron Spider-Man in LEGO brick form. With both being just over 6.5 x 6.5 inches, these collectable mini busts are perfect for display on any shelf.

Launching June 1st and available for pre-order now, the LEGO Marvel Iron Man bust provides fans with an epic display model. The set depicts the Iron Man MK4 armour, inspired by the suit within Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 2. The 434-piece set is equipped with 2 poseable airbrake flaps, micro missile launchers and a whole host of other features making fans ready for any opponent. A printed nameplate and Iron Man minifigure are also included to round out this set highlighting one of Marvel’s original Avengers.

And if that wasn’t enough to get fans excited, the LEGO Marvel Iron Spider-Man bust launches August 1st and is available for pre-order today. This unique build depicts Iron Spider, a suit equipped with nanotechnology to help battle one of Earth’s mightiest foes, Thanos, in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War. This 379-piece set is equipped with all of the Iron Spider suit’s unique features, including 2 movable mechanical arms and a Spider-Man minifigure, guaranteed to get builders’ ‘Spidey Sense’ tingling.

“We’re so excited to unveil these new busts” said Petra Persson, Designer at the LEGO Group. “It only felt right that the first bust would be one of the most beloved Avengers, Iron Man, and with their close relationship, Spider-Man in his Iron Spider suit is the one to follow - completing an ultimate world-saving duo. We hope that all fans of Marvel will be able to feel the love and attention we gave these LEGO sets and that the details and building techniques will surprise and delight our fans around the globe.”

The LEGO Marvel Iron Man MK4 Bust and the LEGO Marvel Iron Spider-Man Bust sets are available for pre-order now and will be available for purchase from June 1st for the Iron Man bust and August 1st for the Iron Spider-Man bust via LEGO.com/marvel and LEGO stores.

By in United States,

Loving these! Don’t know if I’d drop 60 for them, but it’s tempting…

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Concept neat, execution not. They look kinda bad.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

At least LEGO seems to have gotten the memo that adult collectors want minifigures with their display sets, hopefully this trickles into other lines.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Back in my day LEGO sets used to be toys with small vehicles, play features, and people that represent a new world or story. Back in my day..

Also Fantasy castle era 4 life!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Much cooler than the masks but that is a low bar

Gravatar
By in France,

They look really good for their size, I'm impressed, it's usually something I'm no too fond of, but I will definitely get those!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Iron Man looks more sad than anything else because there isn't that angle of the brow to give the eyes a more aggressive shape. When looking down at it, it's not too bad, but head on, it's not great.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not bad. This is what that Black Panther bust should have been, lol. Still can't believe they made that like a $350 set (though it was regularly deeply discounted).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Builds look alright, techniques might be interesting, but they are overpriced. The 2018 iron spider minifigure from 76108 had printed arms and legs. Dual moulded legs are nice, but not exactly an upgrade overall

Gravatar
By in United States,

The top of the head needs to be round and the mouth is bad. I don't understand how LEGO keeps messing these things up.

Gravatar
By in France,

Iron Man looks sad.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't feel like this line is needed at all. The helmet series has some good sets in it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wish the Black Panther bust was just a normal Helmet series size of set. I would have bought that instantly. I didn't need that $350 bust of a bust that sold poorly.

Gravatar
By in United States,

They look great, but $60?!

That Iron Man reminds me of the old joke:

A horse enters a bar.
The barkeeper asks "Why the long face?"

Gravatar
By in Poland,

They missed an opportunity to use the classic Spider-Man suit for the "Spider-Man at the office with his own portrait behind him" energy.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not for me, but these look pretty good. Spidey is very good. Iron Man less so, but mainly because I hate the how the "forehead" is made. From the "eyebrows" down, it looks good, but that top just tanks the whole thing for me.

I saw someone on Reddit say that Lego seems to be designing sets that look good on a shelf in the background of a podcast, and that's all I can see what with these. That person was talking about the Marvel and upcoming Star Wars logo sets, but I think these two fall into that category, too.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Disney licenses are getting way too effing greedy
60 Euros is a robbery in plain sight
Luckily I don't care for marvel/disney sets

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I quite like the Iron Spider one! Also neat how they achieved the simple angles on the display stand. Price notwithstanding, I think these are great busts and definitely a step up from the Black Panther one with no minifigures

Gravatar
By in United States,

Even Iron Man is getting buccal fat removal these days…

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Wow. These look terrible.

Gravatar
By in United States,

mmm...iron man looks like its about to cry with that pouty lip action going on there. A bit concerned that LEGO thought this was a good way to portray iron mans helmet features.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I kinda like these. Iron Man probably could've looked a little better, but Spider-Man looks pretty good! Also glad that they finally gave us the Mark 4! I also like the rotatable options for the display stands.

Probably not going to get these, but I like 'em.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yikes

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Edvard Munch called and wants his scream back from Iron Man.
The prices are ludicrous.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Spider-man looks good, Iron Man looks very weird and it's entirely due to the piece choice for the mouth. And that would not be an easy fix, since it's a gold painted piece.

Price seems OK, though. This feels like a better concept than the helmet line, which largely just look like severed heads for most characters.

They must sell OK, though, they keep makin' 'em.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Honestly, they’re pretty well designed. Not cheap, but that’s just Lego these days. Pretty cool display pieces imo. It will be interesting to see what they come up with in the future.

So true !

Gravatar
By in United States,

$60 is steep for the size. $50 would still be high but expected. Ideally these would be $40, but with licensed Lego in 2025 we can't expect that.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If Iron Man had a light-up Arc Reactor, I'd be mildly tempted, but looking at how it's built, I don't think it does.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Spiderman has arm printing in some pictures and not in others which is odd.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

They look nice but way overpriced. I like the use of the gaps between pieces on Spidey's head continuing the printed web lines!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@SMC said:

I really really hope the final minifigure has arm printing!

Gravatar
By in Japan,

Nice idea but again, released far too late after "Endgame" or "No Way Home" to honestly give it a good chance of marketing and selling past the end of the first MCU phase.. especially with that price tag! Hmmm...a tad overdue methinks. Also, that Iron Spider-Man looks absolutely awesome but I'm not sure about Iron 'Moan'. Both busts have too many curved and none-bricky parts for my personal liking anyway.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Why does Spider-Man's face look like a Space Marine?

Gravatar
By in Italy,

How caw milk the cow more and more? After the minifigs and the helmets... let's do the busts!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow I was not expecting that price tag........ They look very small, definitely not worth 60$

Gravatar
By in Italy,

They look great but the price is a total dealbreaker. Should have been 45€/$ tops

Gravatar
By in Canada,

but... no stickers.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hard pass. These are not for me. For those that dig 'em, enjoy.

Gravatar

Apparently this is also an issue with the new U-Wing set. (I believe this is officially revealed now) Cassian has a different hair piece and arm color between the "lifestyle" photos and the actual box art.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I can't really see much incentive to pre-order now that they don't count towards GWPs.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's a meh...
The iron spider one doesn't look too bad. But at the price point, I don't see who this is targeted for.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Iron Sad

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think they’re great looking.
True, a little bit with Iron Man’s mouth but over all nice display pieces.

You know Darth Vader’s bust is on the horizon.

Gravatar
By in France,

I'm a Marvel fan and have a few sets. These are of no interest to me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Iron Man looks better than the blurry leaks but not by much. Still really bad.

Spidey looks alright. If I was still collecting Marvel, I would pick it up.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thought the heads/faces looked kinda weird, but can be forgiven since they're smaller than the previous helmet sets. I think these look quite nice.
Price though? Insanely too much.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Somebody at LEGO needs to tell Disney how licensing works.

You can only make a profit if the product actually sells. If anyone at LEGO is unclear on this, I’m sure there’s a bunch of ex-Hasbro employees that can fill them in on the details.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think the Spiderman looks good, but Iron Man looks like a LEGO set from the early 2000s.

Gravatar
By in United States,

$60?
Let me know when they drop a Hawkeye bust.
I'll wait....

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

They look realistic and cleverly sculptured but also evil, sad and freakishly terrifying. I thought they're meant to be heroes. Is Lego trying to introduce a morally grey concept here?

I do wonder when Darth Vader is going to appear in the bust series. Not that I would get it. But it feels like it's only a matter of time.

I liked the black panther bust, but I agree it was far too expensive and I wasn't that big of a fan for me to consider purchasing it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like these quite a bit, I think they're big improvements on the Marvel Helmet Collection sets! It's nice that minifigures are included and I think the shaping and heads have been captured pretty well. $60 seems high but IMO these provide more value than the helmets which were the same price.

Disney needs money after the failure of Snow white.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have just so many reactions to these. Firstly, I can't help but think Iron Man has hair plugs here. Secondly, I'm wondering how long until LEGO announces their T-Rex plan and release the complete Iron Man body with near identical bust design. Additionally, LEGO has just got to find a new solution for these neck attachments. Minifigure Iron Spider looks like he's on a leash. I can't wait to see someone modify the bust to include a giant black collar. :o)

LEGO knows I want the Iron Man one just for the Mk. 4 mini figure, but I hate that a $60 dust collector is appealing to me just because of one figure in it.

LEGO Marvel hasn't had the strongest playsets in its history, but this recent "Infinity Saga" era is producing a lot of bland figure displays, doo-dads and statues all jammed with desirable minifigures. I wouldn't mind that if they at least used the comics for inspiration for more playset focused sets too.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

It's a bust..

Gravatar
By in Ukraine,

Eh. Why does Iron Man look so traumatized? And masks are so much better. Iron man's helmet looked way more natural and rounded than whatever this is. And the busts aren't saved by the minifigs either. Those are NOT better than the previous ones. All in all, more of a flop than a flip.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Iron Spiderman looks nice. Iron Man is Marvel's version of 75371 Chewbacca.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Look good, great 36,99€ sets!
Oh, wait...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sets looked pinched, skinny, and underwhelming while also being too much.

Did someone order bigger display items that are also smaller, simpler, more expensive, and dorkier? That Iron Man looks like he did something wrong.

At least they have figs. I can't wait to finally get a Spider-Man and Iron Man! (sigh)

Truthfully, I'm very tired of display models. I suppose I should be grateful for sets that don't interest me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Why does Iron Spider have printed arms in the picture posted on the home page of the site, but not in the pictures in this article? If the printed arms are there, it'd be an upgrade on the one from the 50th Endgame Final Battle set coming out...

Not as cool as the masks, but they were a high bar.

Normally the MK4 will appear in an Iron Man 2 playset for 20 dollars this summer so you won't have to shell out 60 bucks on this set just for the fig if you wait til August.

For me, it’s genuinely becoming difficult to defend being an AFOL anymore. I grew up with the Fantasy Era and Kingdoms lines, along with other exceptional, story-driven themes.

With the release of these new helmet-style builds, TLG is really pushing both themselves - and me -further away from what once made LEGO truly great. I can feel a second dark age knocking hard at the door.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind some licensed themes. But it genuinely feels like LEGO has taken a stance and lost its soul, its identity, and its roots. The 2006–2013 era had a portfolio that - in my opionion - offered something for everyone, adults as well.

In five years, 18+ sets might make up more than half of their product lineup - or somewhere close to that.

I'm not setting out to be a cynic, but this feels like it's going to be another 'collection' that peters out around four or five sets if that - not enough people will pay those prices for a character they don't know, so it's just Iron Man and Spider-Man and we'll probably get a Venom again, then mini-busts get shelved and they start over with the Iconic Character Belt Buckle Collection.

I'm torn. They look decent enough. I don't love the price, but I can't say I'm happy with any price of a LEGO set, so who knows...I'd think a little cheaper, so I may wait for a sale.

But I'd be down for Iron Man since I collected all the other stuff with him, might as well keep plugging away. Is this figure new?

Iron Spider looks well done. And I like the color scheme. But I'm not a big enough Phil Spiderman fan to worry about it.

I don't want to be the old crank who goes "this children's toy was better in my day..." but I do think there is a real criticism to dive into here. LEGO does fortunately still do a lot of children's focused sets and entry level toys at least, so the company hasn't abandoned that part of its base. However, they also are slamming out so much adult collector's items it is clear that is a huge part of their sales and audience right now; trying to chase pop culture trends and cash in on iconic IP brands.

I think a lot of the sets LEGO has done aimed at adults have been awesome. I still need to get the new LOTR stuff, the Dune set, the D&D set, the Transformers, and some of the rumors for future themes this year has got me excited. With that said, there is also over saturation. LEGO releases so many of these cool sets I forget that some of them were on shelves until I see them in the store, since every two weeks or so is a new 18+ D2C monster in stores. Part of why I don't have many of those sets is budgetary too, it took me years of college to finally allow myself to splurge on the UCS Millennium Falcon and that was a special moment to buy myself a set that big and expensive for myself; but I can't do it every two weeks at the rate LEGO is releasing them; and I watch sets I wanted such as the UCS AT-AT go off shelves before I can budget for them.

The pace LEGO is releasing these AFOL oriented D2C sets is concerningly fast. In 2007 the Cafe Corner was a HUGE thing because it was the only set of its type on the market. In 2025? There's probably three Bricklink Designer Program modulars to add to your street alone (a modular road which now is also full of Ghostbusters HQ's, X-Men mansions and Avenger's towers too), let alone the one official modular of the year being shoved between all these spin-offs that keep getting released around it. Its such a breakneck pace only the wealthiest and most die-hard LEGO fans can keep pace. I miss the days of going to the store and paying $8 for a Bionicle canister as my biggest collector's aspiration, and not the current condition of "well gee I would buy this $500 set but I don't have shelf space and I really need to pay student loans this month first."

Maybe to paraphrase something a cartoon movie villain said once, "When every LEGO set is special, no one is."

Gravatar
By in United States,

@xboxtravis7992:
They also saw a surge of new fans who are adults (not to be confused with AFOLs), who probably do focus solely on the large, detailed sets and skip the kiddie fare. They also get held to a unique standard in that _ALL_ LEGO product is considered to be a single product line. Any other toy company can crank out high-end collectibles for 20 different themes, and nobody bats an eye at it because they likely only care about one or two of these themes, or they cherry pick specific items based on personal interests. Only with LEGO product do you somehow still see this unrealistic expectation that everyone should be able to afford to buy every set that catches their eye in a single year, and that output should be pared back until this is the case for everyone. When they increase the number of sets being produced, and see overall sales plateau and simply spread out amongst more options, then they'll know they pushed it too far. At the moment, all we keep hearing about his how overall sales keep growing. Sometimes slower, and other times faster, but still growth at all times. That means they're still bringing in more customers each year, and/or that existing customers are increasing their purchasing, either of which just encourages them to make more every year.

I can totally relate to what you describe.
Part of the reason why I feel I'm in a new dark ages concerning LEGO right now is that I have lost the sense of awe when it comes to large AFOL-oriented sets, due to the inflationary amount of them being released these days.

When I came out of my first dark ages back around 2010 or so, such sets were relatively rare, and so the announcement of something like a new Modular or Star Wars UCS set or Technic flagship set was exciting. Coupled with the fact that arguably those sets back then were of quite high quality, both in terms of set design as well as production quality.

These days production quality is at an all time low, prices for high end sets are mostly ridiculous for what you get, and the sheer amount of those sets and machine gun like frequency with which they are announced make it hard for me to get excited about them anymore.
Add to that the fact that so many awesome alternatives now exist that cater for the same market, and the choice becomes so huge that it's completely overwhelming.

I for example have therefore happily returned to my other old hobby model making / model railroading, and only follow brick related news from the sidelines now.
That is not to say I won't buy any new set anymore, but it has to be something really special and at the same time worth the money to me these days. And those sets are really rare and far between from my point of view.

these look wwayyyyy better than the helmets, but i wwouldn't buy one unless they made one of one of my favvorite Marvel characters, and my favvorite Marvel characters are a lot more niche than the types of characters they make these sorts of sets out of

Howard the Duck? Ambush Bug? No, wait, he's DC. The Great Lakes Avengers excluding Squirrel Girl and Deadpool? Squirrel Girl has appeared in at least one TV series, and got her own podcast, so I can't really include her, and Deadpool is basically Marvel Jesus right now.

Definitely want to see up next Vader, a Stormtrooper, Armored Batman, and a large Galactus bust with a Silver Surfer minifig.
(just to be clear...in this NEW format).

As for Galactus, screw making him a bust. Make him a full-sized figure to this scale.

I’d be first in line ;)
Found a knock-off brick built Galactus about double the size of Giant Man from that LEGO airport battle set.

Thanks, makes sense why I couldn't find it on Urban Dictionary.

Keep that in mind if and when you crank out the SG minifig, Kjeld. I'm watching you.

I built a custom Squirrel Girl a while back out of other parts as a sort of stand-in, although I would absolutely die for an official minifigure. She was a major part of the LEGO Marvel video games having some absurd abilities (like the Squirrel-Buster mech) that played into the idea she's this overpowered hero; but I assume that while somebody at Traveler's Tales loved the character that same enthusiasm never transferred over to the physical LEGO sets.

It kind of puts a pin though in why the MCU focus of LEGO Marvel can get boring. I get that most of the theme IS going to be MCU stuff since that is front and center in pop culture, but just a couple comic book sets on the side would be a nice variety to keep things from being a constant stream of the same sets. I would jump on a Squirrel Girl and Brain Drain vs. The Thanos-Copter set in a heartbeat.

"Squirrel Girl is a breakout-star in Marvel Rivals right now. On the plus-side, it's done wonders for her popularity. on the minus-side, it required her to become more traditionally attractive, which is boring. I want the weird, scrawny, buck-teethed underdog freak back."

In her original appearance, besides looking like a demented mime, she was indeed scrawny. In Marvel Rising, she was quite curvy. Of that cast, the only one I'd describe as "scrawny" would be Ms. Marvel, which kinda goes with her power set. But Doreen was definitely the other extreme for that group.

Overpowered? That's crazy talk. Just because she's single-handedly taken down Doom, MODOK, Mandarin, and Thanos doesn't mean she's overpowered. She didn't even use her own powers to stop Galactus!

She talked down Galactus and then the two hung out on the moon cracking jokes about how much Thanos sucks. That is certainly a power of hers, even if not a "super power."

But she did need to steel an Iron Man suit to fly up to the moon to reach Galactus, so arguably it was the stolen Stark tech that facilitated that and... dang now I want LEGO to do the Iron Squirrel too.

There's currently only one wearable tail in dark-red, which is exclusive to one Animal Crossing set, and it's...okay...ish. In red, the only wearable tail is from 71013-4, so not at all appropriate.

My custom one used a fox-esque tail from the Chima sets. It's not perfect, it locks with the hair on the figure so either the head has to be placed just right to avoid the collision or it causes an illegal connection.

Yup, Furty, I believe. I wanted something darker, and that didn't attach with a neck bracket, so I used the reddish-brown wolf tail from Taz. Neither of those designs come in any colors that would work for an Iron Squirrel minifig, though.

You're going to get a quick namedrop of his civilian identity, while he's dressed in civilian clothes, two seconds before he's casually murdered, and you're going to _like_ it! Well, as much as you ever like anything, at least.

I think they are both great. But for me this is a buy it on sale just for the Mk 4 minifig, and never bother building it.
