A new Elves theme for 2015?

Posted by ,

Hidden in the list of 2015 sets posted earlier today were five sets from a mysterious new line which seems to be based around fantasy elves. David Thomsen on Eurobricks has posted a list of English translations and prices in NZD. They are as follows:

  • Naida’s Spa Secret (41072) – 39.99
  • Aira’s Creative Workshop (41073) – 19.99
  • Azari & The Magic Bakery (41074) – 59.99
  • Treetop Hideaway (41075) – 99.99
  • Farran & The Crystal Hollow (41076) – 24.99

They will apparently be done in a similar way to the Friends and Disney Princess sets, so it's unlikely that the pictured elf will feature. (Sorry, couldn't resist!)

Let us know what you think...

By in Germany,

There is a sixth set: 41073 Naida's Adventure Ship. Unconfirmed name (it's Narias Abenteuerschiff on the German source) and no price because it slipped through when the other list was compiled. Also, Aria's Creative Workshop (not Aira, there seems to be a spelling error somewhere) is 41071.

By in United States,

What does "done in a similar way" mean here? Because Minidolls is a reaaaaaally annoying way to go with Fantasy Elves...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Then again there's a spa and a magic bakery...

By in United Kingdom,

LEGO has to ruin everything with those stupid mini dolls!. -_-

Eh.....at least I can spend my money on Bionicle instead. xP

By in Germany,

@JaseTJ
The leading 41 in the set numbers indicates minidolls, because both Friends and Disney Princess have the 41 as well. I'm not sold on the 'Elves' name because I couldn't get any confirmation for it, but it has stuck around since David first mentioned it. However, these are certainly not LotR style fantasy elves, the set names sound more like 'Fairy' style elves to me.

By in United States,

Perhaps they will belong to a licensed theme?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm sure Lego will make a lot of money off of a elves/fairy theme for girls, but they would make even more money with an elves subtheme for Castle...

>New Elves theme

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

>Friends style

Sigh.... nevermind

I'm with kumasawa, a Woodsmen-esque Elves theme would be a VERY welcome next Castle theme.

By in Canada,

This seems exciting. I've been saying for a while that The LEGO Group needs an in-house fantasy theme for girls (since fantasy is a genre that the existing LEGO Friends theme can't cover itself, and there's a lot of interest in that genre among girls), and it looks like they've now realized that themselves. I hope the design quality is as good as the Friends sets or even better.

It's frustrating how much bitterness I'm seeing from fans of historic themes... then again, I remember fans of historic themes were also bitter about Ninjago not being straight historical fantasy, and it wound up being one of the LEGO Group's most successful and popular themes ever, so perhaps history will repeat itself. A theme with fairy-like elves rather than high fantasy elves would be more unique among existing LEGO sets and themes anyway.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sounds promising. I'm eager for pictures.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I think it's the historic themes fans who are frustrated, and I fully understand them. The Hobbit presumably gets it's last wave, with only four sets. No new unlicensed castle theme, no new LotR sets and the last castle line is from 2013, only had five sets and wasn't very good.

Still, the bitterness we see here and elsewhere seems a little petty...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Aanchir

Maybe it's not so much "bitterness", as much as a lot of the users interested in "high fantasy elves" aren't the target demographic for Friends (5-13 year old girls).

I'd hope it works well for Lego, but I'd also like CMF series 3 Elf sets. I couldn't care less about little girls' toys.

By in Canada,

@DanRSL: I get that, but it just seems to spring up pretty much every time we get a fantasy theme that's not historical fantasy. Not all themes are for everybody, but I don't know why it's so hard for some builders to enjoy the themes they prefer without insulting the ones they don't. You, at least, seem to have pretty much the right attitude about this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Weird new addition to the mini doll line, probably so LEGO stops getting yelled at for the whole "LEGO is sexist" thing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Aanchir

Maybe I've missed some of the vitriol before. I'd absolutely agree to let each demographic have their fun.

The funny thing is, even with names like "Spa Secret" and "Creative Workshop", I was still thinking to myself "cool, cool, treehouse Spa, what else do the Elves do?" and didn't even realize these were "girly" titles for sets.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Thanks for the list of 2015. I believe that Elves will be only FRIENDS type of the theme. The new City sets does not seem to attract me. We`ll see about that.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't care how 'girly' the sets end up looking. It honestly is the minidolls that make me the most disappointed. I would have put myself in debt (not literally) gathering up all of the Friends sets had they come with minifigures. These sets would be amazing to me if they stuck with minifigures.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@The Green Brick Giant: I don't think the LEGO Group is under any impression that this theme will stop the criticism. After all, it still seems to be fairly typical subject matter for girls' toys — just a different genre. More likely, the goal is to continue what LEGO Friends started, turning more girls into LEGO fans and buyers.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wonder if this has anything to do with why we haven't gotten Zelda in Ideas? I think I'm most curious about Bionicle.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Kliq Why don't you buy those sets then? You could always swap out the minidolls for minifigs. I did that for a couple sets for my boys. I have a girl on the way and have been stockpiling some of the cooler sets like jungle and Disney. I imagine I'll keep the minidolls too for her but may delve into custom minifigs that are compatible with her brothers' sets.

I'm thinking these are going to be more Tinkerbell fairyish then true elf, (and when did elves become historical btw?)... :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looking at these I wonder if these are repurposed sets intended for a Disney Fairies theme (been watching the movies with my kids recently) before it was recently announced the franchise would be discontinued. Tinkerbell's workshop would make sense, one of the movies features a pirate ship, and the entire setting the fairies live in is called Pixie Hollow. Could make sense.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Uuuuugh! I'm so tired of the Friends dolls. Why do they have to create such an unnecessary divide?! I realize that this line is doing well, and there are a lot of great things about it, but they could do so much better. They need different people in those marketing and design departments. I get the feeling that it's all dudes. I think there's very likely some truth to this Elves line being somehow related to Disney concepts; but I'm still pretty p.o.'d that they even went down the Friends line with the Disney stuff to begin with. I remember waiting and waiting for Lego to release an awesome Disney castle, long before Friends existed, and then when they finally started releasing the Disney sets, I was so very disappointed. There was no need in taking a girly princess approach to it. Just think if they'd released a castle that resembled anything in the Castle line, along with Sword in the Stone, or a Jungle Book set, etc, sets that would be more gender neutral, with normal minifigs, that all kids (and adults) would be freaking out over, instead of just little girls that get weird, off-brand looking figures and minimally useful pastel pieces. Sorry for the rant, but this always come up any time "Friends" is mentioned. I mean, do you realize how many boys out there would love a Frozen set, but would not at all understand why it came with dolls instead of minifigs? There's like a very loud, collective sigh that keeps getting ignored. It's a hate/love relationship. I actually love the Friends sets and animals, and I'm fortunate to have a young girl to justify getting them; I just hate the dolls and think they're leaving a lot of people out with these sets being so over-the-top girly.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@polyester333: The Friends marketing and design departments are definitely NOT all dudes. In fact, two female designers (Astrid Graabaek and Fenella Holden) did a presentation at Brickfair 2012 and explained, among other things, the intensive research and play testing they did when developing the LEGO Friends theme and its minifigures. Other women who have been involved in the design and marketing of LEGO Friends include Rosario Costa (leader of the LEGO Friends design team), Tanja Aldebot (a freelance illustrator), and Ewa Delgado (a design manager for LEGO Friends and concept developer for new themes).

Why is a problem for certain themes to be overtly girly? There are a lot of kids who really, genuinely like girly things, and who greatly prefer the mini-doll to the classic minifigure. Are their interests somehow less legitimate than kids who prefer City, Castle, Ninjago, or BIONICLE?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Meh, why do they have to do it with Princess/Friends mini-dolls? They're probably going to be little "dainty" things like tinker-bell or something, nothing at all like the older, original elves (that are similar to Tolkien's). Bummer. A whole line with characters like the collectable minifig pictured in the article would be awesome! (Especially if it could correlate with the Silmarillion, but now I'm going off into fairy land).

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I like the Friends series. I don't have any sets, but I can imagine this is a great line for fo girls.
Having a fantasy line with elves seems logical enough. It fits.

But seriously. We had one LEGO elf in the CMseries 3. Great hit, fans want lots of them. The LotR elves are OK. But licenced. So tehey dont really count for me.
And now the first serious LEGO elves in sets will be minidolls. Man o Man, if this is true and I know it is unconfirmed, TLG don't understand the Castle/fantasy fanbase at all. They 'promised' LEGO elves within the fantasy castle sets a couple of years ago. I would like you to remember the map LEGO made with, Trolls, Men, Dwarfs and Elves on it. They never came.
We want non-licenced normal minifig elves!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was thinking that this would make for some cool new hairstyles, maybe in unusual pastel colors... then I realized they would probably all have elf ears. Yes, that was what I was concerned about. :P

They really need to do a "Friends in Space" theme, if they're looking for another genre to use the mini dolls in.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is awesome in every way except one: the minidolls. They have considerably fewer points of articulation, most wear makeup, and are designed to, well, look like dolls. If these Elves were actually minifigures, I would love them, but I just can't get past these dolls.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The names certainly scream friends-esque, don't they? Too bad. Like others, I would have loved a woodsmen theme. Well, maybe both are possible. Pirates is making a return, so woodsmen could too.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@kmvk83: An easter egg in a piece of marketing material hardly counts as a "promise". The BIONICLE theme's main universe is a giant robot that can fit pretty much every other BIONICLE character ever released inside, does that mean LEGO "promised" such a set? The Ninjago TV show had pirates as characters, does that mean LEGO "promised" Ninjago pirate sets?

Besides, this theme is presumably not aimed at the existing LEGO Castle/Fantasy fanbase, so why would it have anything to do with how well LEGO understands that fanbase? LEGO can't put their plans for a theme on hold just because it makes an entirely separate audience sort of jealous. That would be like cancelling the Exo-Suit set because BIONICLE fans have been waiting patiently for new sets in the BIONICLE theme. Or like cancelling a Duplo zoo set because LEGO City fans have been waiting a long time for a zoo.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Gravatar
By in United States,

While I too am not a fan of the mini-dolls, my 4 year old daughter is . . . and I think it is terrific that Lego is offering another series line aimed at girls! Diversity is never a bad thing, especially when it encourages any child to build with Lego bricks!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

@Aanchir,
You are missing the point I think.
I am not asking to put anything on hold. Nor to cancel anything. They should make elves for girls. They will most likely be a hit.
I am simply saying TLG should make cool minifig based elven (or forestmen for that mater) sets, because a lot of fans are waiting for those. I don't understand why they haven't yet.
Next to that I am expressing my dissapointment about the idea of missing out on sets like those.
Minifig Elves for the boys and minidoll elves for the girls. :o) sounds great

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'd like a regular Elves theme as well, but for all the people who're asking for a 'historical fantasy' line... the regular Castle theme is historical fantasy, what with its Dragons and Wizards... Just saying TLG wouldn't need a new theme for boy-oriented elves sets, they could just put it under Castle.

Gravatar
By in United States,

What makes something "boy-oriented" or "girl-oriented"? Opinions and stereotypes that are (or should be) archaic. Why can't one just play with and enjoy whatever they like without applying outdated labels?

What's going to make these sets a hit or a miss in our house is the inclusion or exclusion of male characters. And even then, I'll probably get them (if we have the funds after Friends, Disney Princesses, and the other set here or there that we want) and just use male figures or dolls from our collection when I play with the kids.

I really think that a tutorial in colors is in order. Friends has many more bright and bold bricks than pastel ones. It's really grating to read again and again that Friends is "too pastel" when the majority of Friends pieces are white or tan and then the majority of what is left over are bright and bold. There are pastel pieces, for sure, but they are definitely the minority.

Gravatar
By in United States,

*sigh* cant they just make castle sets like they used to? with more than just the "good guys and bad guys" i loved how they used to have many teams of knights you could choose from, like the forestmen, lion knights and wolfpack renegade, and the same thing with pirates. those were the good ol' days of Lego...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@kmvk83
"Minifig Elves for the boys and minidoll elves for the girls. :o) sounds great"

Actually.... that sounds like a PR disaster waiting to happen. Lego has continuously gotten flack for their periodic attempt at making "Legos for Girls" by the crowds who resent direct girly marketing to girls and gender-distinct product lines. Lego is supposed be a gender neutral toy (at least in theory to some people), and having a "Girls' Elves" (who don't fight and have non-functional cute dollies instead of action figures) and "Boys' Elves" (who DO fight and have pose-able minifigs) would be throwing themselves in a fire and contradicting the idea that Legos are for everyone.

As long as the gender distinction isn't that obvious, Lego could possibly get away with it. But I'd doubt we'll see an "Elves" line in Castle anytime soon.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I'll hold of until I see pictures. The names sound like they have so much promise, but I am primarily into castle and middle earth - but Lego could possibly meet both audiences in the middle here: include the mini dolls as it appears they are, but if the style of the sets is compatible with Castle, it would be quite simply to swap out the mini dolls with elf minifigs, which is exactly what I plan to do if the sets can tie in.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am willing to live under the comfortable illusion that Forestmen might somehow be returning.

Gravatar
By in Taiwan,

If this rumor is true, my question is why TLG didn't directly use Tinklebell license as a substitution, based on the fact TLC have introduced Disney sets instead of bringing original royalty themes (Belville and Duplo Castle princess's) back. It would be abit similiar with Winx's license from Cobi.

The possibility is that TLG want to make a girls-oriented version of Chima, which would come with an enclosed backstory and a new TV show to market. It's a risky choice, but generally more themes or girls is a good thing.

Still, the major debate is same with Friends: do TLG really focus on marketing girls-oriented themes along with other traditional major themes and try to overcome the difference of figures? If they just miss the mark again and again, I think they really waste the creativity of new themes.

@kmvk83
"Minifig Elves for the boys and minidoll elves for the girls. :o) sounds great"

Much agree with DanRSL's saying. The problem of these "girls-oriented" themes is that they also happens to be what older FOLs have been wishing for, since normal themes for "boys" have been lacking town houses or castles. It's okay to have gender-distinct product lines, but it's pretty a waste of marketing or educational meaning if they don't encourage boys or older FOLs to like the new themes as a supplement for other toys.

By in Spain,

YUK!!!
Elves mixed with LEGO Friends.
I didnt think that Lego could go so far >:(.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I know I'm in the minority, and I'm almost afraid to say it, but I really like the LEGO Friends figures and I'm excited about the elves. And I also like traditional minifigs, and have absolutely no problem mixing the two. Just like in the real world there are short chubby people, and tall slender people, my minifigs and mini-dolls can co-exist just fine. If we don't want the divide between girls and boys sets we don't have to have it. Just mix it all up! ;)

Gravatar
By in Taiwan,

@theBrickBlogger
I like mini-dolls too. But to be honest, Friends has been here for three years and we don't see that the majority is encouraged to make minifigs and minidolls-coexist as if they're willing to buy products from both ranges.

The figure problem is tricky. There have indeed been some different kinds of figures in minifigure themes these days (Garmadon, Mungus) but still most minifigures characters based on normal human characters still use the unified size of figure, so it's hard to regard minidoll characters as a part of a normal LEGO system.
The reverse way is to introduce some minidolls based on characters that were used to be minifigues (Ninjago or SW), but since TLG mostly use minidolls to attract girls, I don't think they'd do so.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

New Mini-Doll based sets stir up further controversial complaints from fans. Decidedly not surprised here folks, the Friends line has been great fun to collect and enjoy, and while I admit that the lack of turning wrist joints bothers me when they hold certain accessories, such as a comb, brush or broom, for the most part the Theme and the design have grown on me.

These new elves sets are something to be excited for not just because of their potential, but because they may pave the way for a rich fantasy based Theme in the future. We haven't seen any pictures yet, no need to grow concerned until then. Minidolls are not the worst after all.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I read through some comments. I won't be reading through all of them.

However, does anyone realize that Friends minidolls are gasp! flesh skin tone... meaning, elf ears will also have flesh skin tone instead of yellow. Meaning, it is possible the hairpieces at least will correlate with LEGO figures. Granted, that doesn't help any yellow fans out there, but you can always use a permanent marker. It works surprisingly well. I've turned a lot of licensed figures into yellow and they fit right in.

I prefer licensed sets, so if the hairpieces look decent enough, I will be buying these to flesh out my Elven ranks in my armies.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@sethro3: Let's not get ahead of ourselves. After all, who knows whether these sets will have the same skin tones as LEGO Friends? As fantasy characters, it could be they'd have colorful fantasy skin tones like Monster High or My Little Pony Equestria Girls dolls. Granted, having realistic skin tones like LEGO Friends could make good business sense since it ensures the mini-doll parts are interchangeable between the two themes, so it boosts the crossover appeal between the two themes.

Speaking of which, if this theme is successful, then @thehornedrat has a good point — it will be a no-brainer for Mattel to introduce Monster High building toys and for Hasbro to introduce Equestria Girls building toys. Since Mattel owns the already well-established Mega Bloks brand that has already dabbled in figures specialized to fit a particular theme or brand, that shouldn't be any difficulty for them. Hasbro might have a harder time since their Kre-O brand (manufactured by Korean building block company Oxford) has been more boy-oriented since its introduction and I have a hard time picturing the angular, slightly aggressive-looking Kre-O logo on a girl-oriented toy, and they'd likewise have to introduce a new figure with more lifelike sculpting than their angular "Kreons".

Gravatar
By in Taiwan,

@Aanchir
Interesting thoughts. Yeah, Chima figures also came with many different skin colors despite they have nothing to do with human headgear issues. It could also give obvious difference with earlier themes. Hasbro Kre-O haven't gone through their limits to girls' themes, which is a pity.

@Odeinoichus
Suppose that Elves is truly a minidoll theme but would introduce more minidolls parts and skin colors, they could have fewer exchangeable parts with Friends characters. In Friends, there have been complaints that tanned skin characters like Andrea would have 80% fewer choices of clothes than other flesh skin characters. If they don't want to create new minidoll colors, it would be like fairies from Tinklebell or Winx.

The main problem of minidolls is that, it does good to marketing to a certain group who aren't interested in minifigures, but it helps very little when encouraging minifigure fans to get some minidoll sets. They help increasing new colors of bricks or new accessories, but this is a pity that most children would not enjoy getting more themes and putting together.

Gravatar
By in United States,

LOTR/Hobbit has elves.
I can't fathom Lego putting out a minifig line with elves until these two line are virtually gone.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I would prefer a Castle or Lord of the Rings style elf. to help round out those themes,
but if these are minidoll "fairy" elves, I can see a big market for them.

For me the lego parts making up the remainder of the sets might be worth buying anyway.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the Disney and Friends mini dolls. Girls like them. Why ignore them? I see a lot of potential for the mini dolls. Yeah!

Gravatar
By in Taiwan,

@Brickbum
> Why ignore them? / You're talking about The LEGO Movie, I assume :p. Maybe Elves would change that, but the current problem is that minidolls themes are still not regarded as a representive for all kinds of LEGO customers.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Twisted fire starter set! But demolition seems like such a breath of fresh air in comparison to the endless police, which are also coming out alongside it.

But Fairy type elves? It's a nice idea that I hope sells well for TLG but I shan't be buying any unless the parts and design merit a purchase. There are too many parts of a colour I won't use in the Friends sets. And of course there is the problem of mini dolls which are also useless to me, but seem to be popular for the target audience.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I did assume they would have the same skin color. I guess I never considered a fairy to be of a different skin color than myself (or other humans, minidolls, etc.). It could be neat to see some odd colors in skin tones for this theme, but it would severely limit crossover appeal.

It seems my daughter ends up playing with my minifigures more than her minidolls. Not sure why.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Too many comments to read atm so if the following issue has been addressed please ignore this...
"They will apparently be done in a similar way to the Friends and Disney Princess sets, so it's unlikely that the pictured elf will feature."
Friends-style minifigs instead of "real" minifigs? The point of an Elves theme would be Elf/elf-like minifigs so....not worth my money.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If minidolls are directed towards girls then why was the research institute done with female minifigs?

I can't see elves as minidolls. Those would be some TALL elves.

The theme is awesome though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lego has already shot themselves in the foot by creating themes specifically for girls; there's no going back as long as these companies keep perpetuating the gender gap. When I was a little girl 20+ years ago, there was not such a great divide in toys. Yes, there were action figures vs. barbies, but there was plenty in the middle. I think I would have had just as hard of a time choosing between a Pirates set and a Friends Elves set as my 6 year old daughter would have if she had to choose now, but with absolutely no discretion for which one was more suitable for girls. There's actually nothing wrong with "girly" sets, I do understand it's filling a void; however, I don't know why there's a whole theme just for girls when so many of the subthemes would otherwise be appealing to boys, or why there's a whole section of pink and why the Friends sets are sometimes in a completely different aisle than the rest of the Lego stuff, and instead shelved with Barbie dolls. Let's be honest, how many little boys past the age of 6 feel comfortable shopping in the Barbie aisle? That's the problem. A whole Elf theme would be awesome, and it would be great to have a few sets that are maybe all female minifigures, or even a spa set as one of them if that made any sense. But why do elves, something that could so easily be a gender neutral theme, have to be marketed for girls? That's what I don't get. And the fact that so many people have expressed their disappointment having been mislead by a photo of a minifig instead of a doll should say a lot about how misguided Lego is about what boys and girls really want. They can do all the research they want, but I stand firm in believing that they are largely part of the problem and not the solution by continuing the great divide. Hopefully they'll have taken note with the popularity and publicity of the Science Research Center and by the time my kids have their kids, this will be one of those historical issues that people can hardly believe ever existed.

I am feeling similar sentiment as some of the people on here. This sounds intriguing and it sounds interesting except for the minidols. I personally do not care that lego is orienting themes towards girls. I merely think that they should either revert minidolls back to minifigs (an unlikely proposition seeing as how their popularity has caught on in the intended market) OR they could reedesign the mini doll. I feel that the mini dolls might be actually worth getting ad they
1. Shown a greater percentage of male dolls. (we have gotten 1 -2? even traditional dolls [barbie and ken] had more than that. Lego should just switch the percentages as in "normal" sets where it is 75% female and the rest male rather than 99.99% female.)
2. Fix the piece its self: the feet are disproportionately large and unlike the regular minifigs the feet are fused! If they separated the feet this would allow for more pose-ability. One more thing on the topic of redesigning the piece with the size the minidolls are Lego should add elbows and knees. This makes them more like the reference (a doll) and it gives reason for more people to buy them. People then might complain about the regular figs but those are too small where the minidols have the size to pull it off.

Last thing as far as the elves theme someone commented that those would be tall elves. Elves in traditional fairy tales were tall not like the LOTR elves so this would actually be a good idea. (you have to admit that using minidolls was a better idea than using the tall legs used in woody in the toy story franchise.

@tumaskrall10 - I agree change the % and fix the piece. More people want more female minifigs, it only makes sense. And if Elves as a whole are typically taller then that's fine. I just always envisioned a lot of those types Elves, Hobbits and Trolls to be smaller than say if compared to a human. But that has just been my impression. And you bring up a great point, when you mention Woody's legs they would be odd looking and then they would be taller than say a human/minifig. Would seem strange to me at least.

I'm thankful for Friends sets in spite of the Minidolls. These sets have finally provided some expanded colors like Chima has done as well. Friends has brought us more animals that help bring life to the Lego world. Elves could continue that trend of new colors, new animals and new trees and bush elements I would hope.

TLC is a business and as such does what it must to meet consumer demand. If its market research shows that targeting ranges by gender increases its top and/or bottom line, that's what it must do. It isn't TLC's job to educate/indoctrinate especially not if it's commercially detrimental.

@tumaskrall10 > The current problem is that minidolls don't really coexist with minifigures in the major representive advertisings, despite there is a indeed group of minidoll fans supporting. Honestly I don't think it's difficult for LEGO designers to additionally introduce minifigures beside the minidolls. Then common FOLs wouldn't be able to say "I have no interest because it's not a minifigure theme". Much like the top pic, there are fans of elf minifigures but we don't see them show much interest in this news.

@disneywizard > If minidolls are directed towards girls then why was the research institute done with female minifigs?
Uh, the project had explained it very well. It was not considered as a "commercial" product for girls. It's more about education like the Education minifigure packs, which is used to educate kids and parents about professions. The other aim is to introduce a non-girls-oriented set with female minifigures only. Still, I don't think RI is that powerful to change TLG's marketing directions and make them discontinue minidolls.

@disneywizard > It would be interesting to see dolls from Toy Story (Bo Peep and Barbie) use minidolls and stand by Woody, even though Woody and Jessie were actually dolls too.
One problem for Friends and Disney characters was that they were human but show to be taller than all female licensed minifigures. This could cause some logical disturbances, like why Olivia, a normal young student, is taller and curvier than some sexy Superheroines.

Sounds like a great idea, good luck with that, Lego!

More revenue for Lego = higher chance for adult / collectors sets. (we shall not forget that)

To be honest, I think a lot of the sexism in boys and girls' toy brands is purported most of all by stubborn parents. I've heard many a tale where little girls want to buy boys' items and even little boys want to buy girls' items and they get forced by parents to put them back. I think this is why LEGO is forced to market girl-specific items and to adapt to stereotypes. Some parents just teach their little girls they have to buy the ones with the mini-dolls and while the world is getting more progressive there's still a lot of people who aren't.

I'm excited that Elves will allow girls a step closer to the more 'male-oriented' LEGO brands by offering some fantasy items and I hope it is successful and allows LEGO to blur the lines a little more between the different brands. And maybe one day we will get a unisex elf theme :)
