Does the Volvo wheel loader fit on the FMX trailer?

Posted by ,

In the comments to our review of 42209 Volvo L120 Electric Wheel Loader it was asked whether the vehicle fits on the trailer that came in last year's 42175 Volvo FMX Truck & EC230 Electric Excavator.

It does, but is it to scale?

Yes it does, although the bucket needs to be raised as the trailer is not quite long enough.

However, the vehicles are not the same scale. Going by the wheelbase/track length of each, the L120 wheel loader is approximately 1:24 (3200mm/130mm), whereas the EC230 excavator is about 1:21 (3660mm/170mm). The FMX truck itself appears to be about 1:20, using the width of the cab for scale (2500mm/120mm).

The wheel loader is thus smaller than it should be: if it were also modelled at 1:20 the wheelbase would be 30mm longer.

While I'm at it, the excellent 2016 model 42053 Volvo EW160E is also about 1:20 (2640mm/130mm).

How many of the Volvo Technic sets do you have?

By in Germany,

That's why I prefer non-liscensed sets. Things don't need to be to exact scale. If the wheel loader fits, just put it in there and enjoy.

Thank you, @Huw ! :) Now I can sleep peacefully and wait for the release :D

As of now, I have all the Volvo sets except the polybag. I had it, but decided to sell as I'd rather collect larger models.

You could just ignore the branding?

I have exactly zero of them.

I have all Volvo sets released so far... with the exception of 42030!

Anyway, the 120H is a pretty small loader and it's actually slightly narrower than the EC230, so I'd say the scale is pretty close. The cab looks a bit squashed because the bottom should be black, not yellow, and the steering wheel and seat look a bit smaller than they should be.

By in Netherlands,

I only have 30433.....would that fit on the trailer?

OT: as close as the scales are, they look slightly off together. Which is a shame. Seems like Lego just designs every set in their own little universe.

Agreed. The EW160 in particular looks far too big compared to the others.

I own Volvo stock but not any Volvo Technic sets. I love looking at these sets because they look so cool and have so many fun play features.

But, alas, there are only so many Lego sets one can own

The only Volvo Technic set I own is 30433, but you could fit multiples of that on the trailer!

Sadly I only have one the little Volvo wheel loader.
I got it as a gwp when I bought the Lamborghini Sian.

I saw another comment that mentioned that the new 16 stud wide bucket would correspond to a 1:21 scale, but in any case, they look really good together.

You could, but then why pay through the nose for it in the first place? Non licensed Technic sets in the past used to be drastically cheaper (at least over here) than all those licensed ones nowadays.
I guess that's one of the main reasons why most complaints about modern Technic sets come from German commenters.

It would be great if for all items the scale is listed as a tag.

I only own the Volvo 42114 dumper trucker, which from your review is 1:20. Is the lift of the loader high enough to reach over the side?

Given that the real L120 would be unable to reach over the side of the A60H, I'd say no.

If you want to load your A60H, you'll have to use the L350F or the ZEUX!

I did wonder if price was the issue. As a Marvel and Star Wars fan I can appreciate that. If I want to buy licensed sets I almost always have to wait until they go on sale. I think the same is true for Technic? At least it is for the high end supercars that I've bought.
