Bionicle 2015 news

Posted by ,

Super-sleuth Gatanui has found this image on the LEGO server that will be used on the product page there.

It shows a mask of some sort, so I suspect Bionicle fans will be pleased to see that the theme appears to be returning to its roots, rather than brains, spinning discs and other (not so) collectables.

Yes, I saw that earlier on BZPower! Exciting news all around. If anyone had any doubts before, hopefully now they are fully on board the hype train.

I'm wondering, though; is that really the Kanohi Mask of Creation? I know it wasn't described exactly like that appearance in the old canon, but if this is a reboot I would expect it to be an important enough mask to include on the product page image. Therefore, it could be a new Mask of Creation, or something as important as the Ignika. However, it's definitely not the mask present on that leaked display from a month or so ago. Really, it could be anything. However, as TTV said in their video, if this IS the mask from the display, both it and all of the sets we've seen must have changed a lot in the prototype stage. I am curious to see...

Geek thoughts over.

just2good is definitely not who found the picture, that was me. You probably don't know me around this place but I'm BZPower Reporter Gatanui aka Adrian and I posted the first story about it on BZPower. I can prove this anytime you want. You don't have to credit me directly if you don't want to, the link to BZPower is okay on its own, but I'm not too fond of the wrong person being credited, if you understand.

I'm definitely very, very excited. The design quality of that mask is very good and definitely appears consistent with BIONICLE's treatment of masks as powerful, decorative treasures and artifacts rather than just faces or headgear.

I'm glad to see masks will apparently return to having a major role in the storyline, although in fairness their importance never entirely went away — 2004 had the Mask of Time as a major plot device, and 2006–2009 had the Mask of Life. It also seems like there will be a greater emphasis on mask collecting in the sets, though there's no telling whether we'll see blind-packaged mask packs like in the olden days. I'd honestly be just as happy without. I'm not opposed to blind-packaged toys, but I think they should have some inherent play value of their own like the collectible minifigures and not just be accessories for larger and more expensive toys.

Anyone interested in seeing the mouseover animation? http://cache.lego.com/r/www/-/media/Portal%20V2010/FranchisePortal/bionicle/bionicle_210x227_PortalFranchiseCard_Animation.swf

Sorry @Gatanui, I'm happy to be corrected.

^ Cool, thanks.

No worries. Thank you for the correction! :)

You say the theme is returning to its roots. Was it confirmed that there will be masks to collect with a stud to hold it onto the Toa's faces instead of an axle? I mean, I'm still probably going to buy some, but I'd really be excited/surprised if they are actually going back to the Toa Mata roots before there was much knowledge about anything in this universe.

Wow. If we didn't think this was real enough, now we have this, which is most certainly real. Kudos to whomever found that!

Having only basic knowledge of Bionicle lore, which mask is that supposed to be? Doesn't look much like the one in the store display to me...

@PicnicBasketSam This mask hasn't been named yet as far as I know, and I've been with bionicle since 2001

Sounds interesting as a kid I like many if you played with original Bionicle. While I like that it's going to be like the original, but I am now more into brick based building J am glad to see that another generation will get to enjoy what we once did.

Maybe its the mask of Spiders, past and future with time travel? @Aanchir maybe there will be game cards.

Unfortunately the lighting bolt partically obscures the mouth area- it would be nicer to see the entire thing, and also note if they're keeping the signature mouth-hole as with the earlier masks.

Could be the mask of kings?

I like how regal and important that mask looks. I'm with Aanchir on the mask aspect. Though I would like blind mask packs because that supplied up with a lot of recolors of the masks, which proved incredibly useful. I like his idea to of making them like a collectable minifig series. maybe they come with little stands and what not and you get em all, and there's little story snippits on a piece of paper that explains what the mask is and why a given character should have it. It'd be like collectable Minifigs but with bionicle's story.

Well, I sure hope this means the rest of the masks will be this quality, as it looks impressive! I hope the toa's masks stay similar to their original design, like Taho's mask. Hope to see more from this.

Wait, I was credited? What did I have to do with this story, lol!

Now I'm really curious as to if there are icons for the other themes that have been leaked. Perhaps we can get our URL sleuth to search them out.

Awesome news all the same!

@Penkid11: I've tried a few but none of them worked. My guess is the BIONICLE page only got its image so early because it's probably going to get a teaser website next month or so (possibly after NYCC) while the others won't get their websites until December or so. Interestingly, lego.com/supercar does already take you to the products section of LEGO.com instead of to a "Page not found" error site.

@3rdeye88: That just gave me an idea... A collectible minifigure series based off of the new Bionicle sets and the HF minifigs.

If anyone wants the mouseover animation but can't view SWFs for some reason (first of all you should get a device that can view SWFs :P), here it is as an animated GIF: http://i.imgur.com/bofTRL0.gif

My son was raised on Bionicle, but has since moved on from Lego (so sad). He will be getting one of these for Christmas regardless!...
