Brickset bouts: Fourth bout result

Posted by ,

We're announcing the results of the polls two days after they were published, so today we can reveal the winner of the fourth bout between 71741 NINJAGO City Gardens vs. 10497 Galaxy Explorer.

This was a another hard-fought contest with a close result. Find out which set was victorious after the break.

A total of 3,159 votes were cast.NINJAGO City Gardens received 1,458 (46%) and Galaxy Explorer 1,714 (54%).

The winner is therefore 10497 Galaxy Explorer.

10497-1

It will go on to face the winner of the first round bout between 76178 Daily Bugle vs. 10294 Titanic.

We won't be holding a bout today because I'm awaiting responses from advocates for three of the remaining sets. Hopefully we can resume on Monday.

Addendum from CapnRex101: The original version of this article showed the numbers swapped around, with NINJAGO City Gardens receiving 54% of the vote, but the Galaxy Explorer as the winner. For clarity, 10497 Galaxy Explorer is indeed the winner, as shown in the screenshot below:

I have left the results open on the poll article if you wish to check.

Surely this isn’t right?

Shouldn’t Ninjago have won?

@Huw: there is an inconsistency between the numbers and the winner. You may want to check this.

It would be interesting to see Galaxy Explorer go up against Titanic (if that doesn't sink when it accidentally hits the tip of Daily Bugle sticking out just above sea level)...

By in Netherlands,

I have a measure of sympathy for Steve Harvey, but that man should not be involved with polls and votes anymore.

Just kidding. By the way, thanks for organizing the whole poll tournament event, I suppose it's a lot of extra work for the admins but for us (or at least for me) it's a lot of fun =)

I figured that one would be close, didn’t expect it to be so close we got a La La Land/Moonlight moment out of it XD

That's good ;) Watch out for Brick Daddy from 5984.

Another close one. Interesting to see if will get more of those or if we'll see more landslides as we get closer to the final bout.

Release the ninjago gardens vs galaxy explepstein files!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I lost 3 times, and the one time that I won, I didn't really like either one of them... Maybe I should start voting for the one I don't like?

Sorry for the confusion. In my haste to add the numbers to the article before I went out cycling with the local club this morning, I inadvertently swapped them.

It seems to me that despite my strong sentiment towards Space, Rivendell would win in this clash.

I own both of these sets, and love them both. I had a hard time voting. I’m glad the outcome was close, at least.

The spaceships are doing well! Interestingly enough, 10497 and 10283 both use https://brickset.com/parts/design-60186. I discovered that when it was RPotD: https://brickset.com/article/100158/random-part-of-the-day-roof-tile-2x2-45-deg-no-24

By in United States,

Personally I’m a huge classic space fan, and I think objectively 10497 is an extremely well-designed set (and I voted for it). But nevertheless I’m surprised at this result - Ninjago is very popular and the City Gardens set is really impressive.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Saw this one coming a mile away honestly. Not being a classic space guy - or a vehicle guy in general - the Galaxy Explorer doesn't do a whole lot for me personally, but the set has been showered in love here on Brickset ever since it was first announced so the result here really does feel inevitable.

Whether this would be the case anywhere other than Brickset, I couldn't say. But here, at least, it felt like a safe call. Honestly if anything, I'm surprised by how close it was.

Most of these polls I haven't been voting because I don't feel like I have a horse in the race either way; but it's definitely interesting to see how the votes swing. No big surprises so far in my view, but we'll see if that keeps up going forward ^^

This time of year it's 70% cycling, 30% LEGO :-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I own both of these sets and grew up in the 70’s with classic space and I still have all my space sets from that time. Love the classic space theme and would love to see Lego produce more sets like the Galaxy Explorer. For context, I am also not a Ninjago fan, too old for that cartoon and have never seen an episode.

That being said, the result of this poll is kind of a joke. In my 4 decades of building Lego, Ninjago City Gardens was the best building experience I’ve ever had; and it’s not even close, Galaxy Explorer is amazing nostalgia fun and maybe the best value for price of any set in recent years. But better than Ninjago City Gardens… not even in the same ballpark.

“Best” was never defined for us here so build experience will carry different weight with different folks. I would also like to point out that for me a lengthier build results in a more satisfying experience which would thus always be in favor of the larger sets.

I am satisfied with this result and am anxious to see if anyone can topple Elron.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Definitely disappointed with the result, but at least it was close. Given Brickset's viewership, it's not too surprising for the result. I only have one favorite set left now, since Ninjago City Gardens and The Temple of the Golden Idol both have been knocked out.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I seem to have totally missed this round of the vote. Oh well.

By in Portugal,

That horrible space ship won? How is that possible? Never understood the hype about that set. Plenty of better spaceship models in star wars. Ninjago gardens is a real beauty and one of the greatest lego sets ever. And it lose to that thing. Ahah. Ridiculous...

Good value, yes, most likely. best value, I doubt it, and ninjago city garden was actually really good value, I think it started the same price as ninjago city (300€) with 1000 extra pieces ?

Y'know, @Huw, you never did give those reviews of 10497's alternate models that we were promised...

Another thing to be considered is that the GE is a lot more swooshable than NCG. Oh, and it's Elrond, not Elron. Please don't get the leader of the elves mixed up with the founder of Scientology.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Disappointed with the results but not at all surprised. Both could have easily made it to the semi-finals. I guess nostalgia wins again.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Well, so far I am 4 on 4. The results for Starry Night vs Cantina are not out yet. I had initially listed Ninjago Garden as the winner for this round but I changed my vote at the very last minute and went for the Galaxy Explorer which is in permanent display in my home office.

I must say I was quite surprised Barad dur lost to the Space Shuttle and while I understand the fandom and al, to me Barad dur, except for the minifigs, is a big block of black while the space shuttle is almost a marvel of Lego geometry - it is very satisfying to see all the angles coming to a perfect finish - incidentally, this neat geometry is also visible on the Galaxy Explorer. None of the stickers have been applied on my Space Shuttle (also on permanent display) and it does not detract from its tremendous display and (limited) play value (you don't really swish a space shuttle as it normally just glide in a very predictable pattern!).

From the 6 sets I own, out of the 16; I have 3 still in the race (10350, 10283, 10497) and 3 were eliminated (10320, 77015, 71741). And 3 more are on the buy list (10305, 10316, 21348).

ROFL

Name some of those.

Most of the recent LEGO Star Wars ships have been huge disappointments, apart from the UCS Jango Fett Slave I.

As for why the Galaxy Explorer might have won, it's offering a tremendous overall package. Display value (for those interested in that kind of set of course), terrific build experience, lots of NPU, clever building techniques, playability and swooshability, three-in-one, no stickers, great value for money.
And as the cherry on the top the nostalgia factor of the set and even the box, which shows a love for the source material by the designers, whereas most 18+ boxes are just soulless lumps of black.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Love this set, one of my favorites, great to see it moving on.

Gravatar
By in United States,

To everyone saying nostalgia is why it won, I'd beg to disagree. I'm 19 and have no nostalgia to classic space beyond watch vintage set reviews as a kid, and I love the Galaxy Explorer as a set and a ship. Granted I have a great appreciation for classic space and was able to pick up the original as well as a few others, however it holds up incredibly on its own with references to other themes as well improving on the original's features
