Quick look: 5009422 Italian Market Van
Posted by Huw,
5009422 Italian Market Van is the gift with purchase for those who buy 21359 Italian Riviera before the 14th of August.
It looks like it'll be right at home in the narrow streets of the Cinque Terre village scene.
Summary
5009422 Italian Market Van, 142 pieces.
The model captures the likeness of the iconic Italian vehicle perfectly!
The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.
Three-wheeled vans, such as the Piaggio Ape, are a common sight in the narrow streets of Italian villages, and this model captures the likeness of the single-seated vehicle very well. The only thing not quite right are the back wheels, which are too small and too narrow.
This variant has a flat open back that's stuffed full of provisions for delivery.
I would have said that the large plant with yellow fruit was a lemon tree, but they typically grow downwards from the branches. It would have been easy to have them do so here, but for some reason they are growing upwards.
The delivery driver has a plain torso: unprinted ones are something of a rarity nowadays, so it's good to get one occasionally.
It's a shame that there's no room on 21359 Italian Riviera to place the van on its streets but, nevertheless, it's a decent and appropriate accompaniment to it.
If you've not done so already, read our review of the Italian Riviera, then place your order now to secure this GWP.

The fig is soooo lame. The rest is really nice, but I don't think it's enough to push me for a Day One purchase like the GWP for the Shire or Shackleton.
I'll stick to my one in 60326.

I mean, you say that, but I'm very seriously considering making that the face for my sigfig now that the salt is significantly displacing the pepper.
Really loved the build of the Italian Riviera, bought it this morning with a gift card I bought at 7% discount, along with €50 of insiders points, as well as a 3.7% cashback from my telecom provider as I used their link. However, the GWP isn't for me, I find it rather boring, it's like they forgot they wanted one and quickly put some stuff together to get an oversized little wagon.
I feel like the only reason the “lemons” are growing upwards here is to keep them out the way of the rest of the groceries, feels like it would be pretty easy to just flip them otherwise

Salt-N-Pepa's here, and we're in effect!
The face is definitely good. Santa?
First thing I thought too about the lemon tree! If I get it I will modify it!
I feel like the American style disposable coffee cup is the worst inaccuracy here!
And how is that van supposed to be getting there? They should have given us a bridge or an extra alleyway just to drive into that set as gwp
I think if they decided to save money by not printing the torso they should have gone full retro, giving the figure a classic smiley face and pants in one of the primary colours that were available in the Eighties, like regular blue, or black, or red. And of course the classic baseball cap. Maybe something like this:

It would be a very nice GWP if it was attached to an £85-£100 set. Not a £250 set. As usual with recent GWPs attached to specific sets they don't encourage a purchase... they encourage waiting for something better!
I do kinda like it, although those wheel arches look just weird, even more so with the tiny wheels. And for those mirrors, couldn't they have used silver pieces instead?
(one can only dream of chrome....)
But doesn't really matter, this would have been a decent €10, but no way I'm gonna pay €280 for it.

Pretend it's a can of fertilizer.
It's weird to see a figure with a detailed face print when that face is the only printing on the figure.
@AustinPowers: Unfortunately for our childhoods, https://brickset.com/parts/design-86035 hasn't been produced since 2018, so they would have destroyed the mold by now. Which is a real shame, because it would have been perfect for the minifig in 40649. That set's hat looks much more like that piece anyway.
I wanted to stay away from this set, but Brickset keeps showing it to my face, so I'll get this out of me - this set is ugly. Vehicle proportions are waaay off, minifigure is meeeh, plants are too basic and built with techniques from a decade ago, where you have full botanical line-up just around the corner. Same goes for the three-wheeler, as there are many other such vehicles spread around Friends and City which look so much better.
For a something that should encourage you for a Day-1 purchase, this set misses the mark so badly.
To the person who designed this: feels like you're and intern and/or this is your first attempt at a product design. Sorry to say that, but there's a looong way ahead of you.

See how each and everyone of us has different tastes? One of the reasons why I got the set on day one was to get this GWP, which I just adore! Upward lemons aside...

Yes and no. The problem is the wheels are in scale with the minifig, and the rest of the vehicle, while shaped right, is HUGE. The truck bed (the "flat open back") is the same width as 60384 or 60404, and those are supposed to be much larger vans.
The Ape really is very small. The bed is only 1.25m wide. If an average height adult laid down across an Ape's bed, both their head and feet would be hanging off the sides. Translating this to Lego, the bed should be no more than 4 studs wide.
I've seen this design on another set and built one for flower delivery already. Very nice little van. Good design by Lego.
The set is overall neat, but of course there are problems:
1. The wheels are too small in proportion to the whole veichle
2. It's a gwp. I hate high-quality car gwps for being gwps and not normal retail sets. Like, how do you seriously find one on the aftermarket for a normal price?
