Review: 76784 Black Dahlia Flower

Posted by ,

With the new series of Netflix's hit TV series Wednesday underway this week, and a brace of new sets revealed earlier today, now is a good time to look at one that has just been released.

76784 Black Dahlia Flower is a low-priced set that contains one of the show's key locations within.

Summary

76784 Black Dahlia Flower, 358 pieces.
£19.99 / $27.99 / €24.99 | 5.6p/7.8c/7.0c per piece.
Buy at LEGO.com »

A suitably drab model of a key location of the first series

  • Delightful details inside
  • Looks great on display whether open or closed
  • Reasonably priced for a licensed set
  • Stickers on petals should have been prints

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Minifigures

As you'd expect, the set includes a Wednesday Addams minidoll, and this is a new version of her, attired in a mini skirt, black jacket and striped T-shirt. I believe she shares a head with her earlier incarnation, and certainly has the same hair.

Affixed to her shoes is a platform sole piece previously seen in Friends sets that makes her 3.2mm taller and is new in black.

The second minidoll in the set is Marilyn Thornhill, the botanical sciences teacher at Nevermore Academy and (spoiler alert) the main antagonist in the first series.

The character has auburn hair and large glasses and these have been replicated here. She appears to be wearing overalls and if you squint you can just about see that her torso is printed with pocket, button and belt details. Her red boots are significant in the plot of series one.

Here the height difference introduced by the platforms is quite evident.

The completed model

The titular black dahlia stands upright in a 'pot' which opens out to reveal a conservatory. A couple of stickers decorate the sides. One says 'Nevermore Academy', and on the opposite side the Marilyn Thornhill quote "The most interesting plants grow in the shade."

Removing the flower from the pot allows the conservatory to be opened out. The room is the setting for many of the show's darker twists, including where Wednesday confronts the teacher towards the end of the first series.

Inside there's a chest of drawers with plants growing out of them, and a table with a sink. Odd-looking flowers adorn the walls and worktops, and it's a colourful scene in what is otherwise a deliberately drab structure. Note the alternating transparent purple and clear window panes.

When opened out like this, the flower can be stood upright on the left-hand side, as shown in the main photo of the review.

The furniture inside is nicely detailed, and the plants suitably peculiar.

Nestling in one of them is this delightful 'wiggly worm' tile, a new printed piece.

Were it not for its drab colours, the dahlia would not look out of place in a Botanical set. It's about 9cm in diameter, with ten petals around the perimeter which are decorated with two designs of stickers. A total of four layers of petals give it wonderful detail and volume.

Verdict

This is a enjoyable little set that depicts a significant location in the series. It looks great on display whether opened out or closed, and also offers plenty of play opportunities involving two of the main characters.

There are a lot of delightful features inside it: I particularly like the mysterious-looking exotic flowers and the plants growing out of the drawers.

The dahlia flower head is well-designed but it's perhaps a shame that it's predominantly black, though. I suspect it would look beautiful in typical dahlia colours like red, yellow, or pink. Maybe we'll see one in a future Botanicals set.

I was quite surprised when I saw how inexpensive it is: £19.99/$27.99/€24.99 seems very reasonable for 350 pieces and two new and desirable minidolls.

It was released on August 1st and is available at LEGO.com now.

With so many similar stickers these should have been prints.

Wednesday Team: We just released new sets and are very excited!
Star Wars Team: Did you remember to add the FU-30x price escalator?

Looks great to me! I think this is as close as we'll get to a Lego black lotus, and the conservatory and minidolls are fun. I'll definitely be picking this up at some point.

Yes good point, I'll add it as a -ve.

It’s a very good deal, really. See, Lego? You can sell reasonably priced sets when you want to.

I know there are people who complain that they used minidolls for this rather than minifigures, but that Wednesday looks EXACTLY like Jenna Ortega.

By in Ireland,

I build this set yesterday; it's a nice little set and the flower looks great when build (the stickers didn't bother me because they were easy to apply). I left the inside empty and added colorful LED lights, creating a stunning effect when the pot lights up in the evening.

This is a very useful set for City MOCers - that's a ton of window pieces at a low price point!

I'm wondering what MOCers are going to do with that platform heels piece. I could see it having use in greebling.

Anyone else in the UK finding this set impossible to find in the wild? None of the big chain retailers (Smyths, Toymaster etc) seem to be stocking it, nore do the independants, and as far as I'm aware, its not a Lego only exclusive....

I usually dislike the "big items but in Lego" but this one works and its actually well designed.

It looks really neat. I agree it should have been printed. I'll want to build this for sure. And even though it is a different character, I can use Christina Ricci's minidoll as Misty Quigley from Yellowjackets since that's my daughter's favorite character!

Watching all of the new episodes last night made me want to pick this set up today. I didn’t find it. But I did find 76781 for 1/3 of its price! I don’t know what I’m going to do with a second one.

-ve is clearly shorthand for “negative”

I haven't found this in any Australian shop yet, either. It's only been a week, though, and some stores take a bit longer to get all their new stock in.

I really wish Lego would quit it with the store exclusives, they're just confusing and frustrating. You go to a store and finds the entire theme/wave, just not the set you're looking for, and if you ask the staff they know nothing. So you have to search randomly across town, with a significant chance none of the chains there has it. With no information anywhere it doesn't even gain the stores who DOES have the exclusive that much, as many potential customers gives up or buys it from SaH, and those who looks for it at that store first don't know how lucky they are.

This really annoyed me with the first Indy theme, as I couldn't find 7623 Temple Escape anywhere even in Oslo, despite it being a flagship set. And that was just around when Norway *finally* got SaH, so that option couldn't be taken for granted either.

Why is the main Dalia’s stem black but the minidoll-scale Dalia has a green stem?

Note currently though they're saying 'order for click and collect in 2 days', meaning they're having to ship them from somewhere rather then having them in the warehouse.

Point I was making, which this shows, is that no-where seems to have them physically in store despite them not being exclusives.

My local Argos says "collect right away" so might be worth checking out other nearby Arges, to see if they have it.
