LEGO Ideas 21362 Mineral Collection announced!

Posted by ,

LEGO Ideas sets are being announced at an unprecedented rate, as mere days after 21361 Gremlins: Gizmo was revealed, here is the press release for 21362 Mineral Collection!

21362 Mineral Collection
880 pieces, rated 18+
$59.99 / £54.99 / €59.99
Available at LEGO.com from 1st October and for pre-order now

Showcase the vibrant colours of minerals with the LEGO Ideas Mineral Collection (21362) building set for adults. A wonderful gift for rock collectors and nature lovers, this collectable set features brick-built models of 6 minerals and buildable display shelf units to create eye-catching living room decor.

Use clever building techniques and transparent LEGO bricks to create models of golden pyrite, purple amethyst, blue fluorite, watermelon tourmaline, reddish-pink rhodochrosite and tangerine quartz.

Assemble the 3 freestanding shelving units and attach your creations to the shelves. Arrange the units as you wish and swap the minerals to different shelves to change up your display.

Here is the original Ideas submission, created by DDF72, for comparison with the official model:

Will you be buying this set?

Yes, eventually
Yes, if it's discounted
Maybe, I haven't made up my mind yet

Jesus Christ Marie! They're Minerals!

Perfect execution and... not overpriced? That Disney tax is out of control! This looks wonderful.

Needs a Rock Raiders minifig.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have had "doorbust the f'ing lego store" on my calendar for October 1 for months, with no idea why I put it there. Now I know :)

I feel like if I ever get these and put them on display I’m going to have to dig out one of those old rock monsters from that theme to have with them

Gravatar
By in United States,

As this contains no recognizable IP, I cannot allow myself to buy it—out of principle of course.

:)

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

They had to change some of the minerals:(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm not sure how accurate either rendition is but I prefer the amethyst of the original submission - the dark bluish grey surround it now has looks a bit like a overbearing frame and it detracts from the other samples in my opinion.

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

Looks nice, but for me this would mainly be a transparent parts pack

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is possibly one of the only "objects" sets where the model is cheaper than the real thing. But to me, they don't look great compared to the real thing.

It is a shame that neither the original designer nor LEGO thought of including tiles with the names of the minerals on them.

I voted for this set, I was delighted when it hit 10k, even more pleased when it was selected, and am now quite thoroughly over the moon at its final form. Here’s hoping I can pick it up at some point.

Gravatar

I like that it includes shelving.

An energy crystal has been found.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe I’m being too harsh but I think the level of accuracy is below what Lego is capable of producing these days, and the gems looked better in the original submission. It’s also clearly intended as a display piece, but like someone else commented, omits the name plaques for some reason which would have gone a long way into making this more presentable.

I mean to some degree I understand the demand and popularity for botanicals, I feel this is a attempt at feeling how warm the water is to expanding this theme.

Haha! My thoughts exactly!
(Does lack a Nagi minifig though....I bet her shapes would be too challenging for the moulding machines.....)

OT: looks pretty decent, both in execution and price! I do like the original design of the minerals a bit more, but they will have had their reasons to change it, and at least didn't mess it up this time.

But most of it I like that this for once is what Ideas should be all about. Not just another IP, not a variation of stuff that Lego could make themselves. but something truly original.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very nice set, and great use of the many transparent bricks that exist.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

You know, I'm not so keen on minerals but this looks kind of decent. However, I have a LOT of transparent pieces lying around, so I can probably build stuff like this from my collection.

Gravatar

Ah great, another overpriced $100 Ideas set and... Wait, it's only $60? In this economy???

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Okay.... really don't see the point in this. Plastic Flowers with Botanicals I get as its something that has a temporary existence rendered in a permanent medium... But making a sculpture of a rock? Admittedly if you wanted to buy real world examples of these minerals it'd cost you more... But I don't get any appeal over the real thing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like it! I'll pick one up when I see it out in the wild.

Gravatar

We need Bert and his plethora of geology jokes.

Gravatar

Huge amount of play features in this set: there are 720 combinations of putting the six different pieces of rock on the six places available for them. And if you go crazy and totally outside the box, you can put them completely elsewhere and then the possibilities are endless...

Brilliant. You should apply to join the LEGO copywriting team.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The pyrite, amethyst geode, and tangerine quartz look pretty much like what they're supposed to be.

The rhodochrosite is shaped right, but the color is a bit off - it should be more pinkish. I think if Lego did a trans red core faced with trans pink tiles, that would get closer to the actual mineral's color.

The blue fluorite is blue, but it doesn't look much like typical fluorite. Fluorite usually has a cubic habit, so this should be shaped more like the pyrite and rhodochrosite. Fluorite can be octahedral, so I guess this is supposed to be a massive octahedral sample.

The "watermelon" tourmaline is tourmaline-shaped, but it sure isn't watermelon. That variety is red or pink in the center with green edges, like an actual watermelon. This one is yellow or orange at the core, with colorless edges.

Bert was in another set. And while I like this, I don't have the space for it, so 10334 will have to do me for my rock music needs. (Seriously, I tried out the "hide your smartphone and play music" feature by playing Chuck Berry's Greatest Hits.)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I preferred the geode in the original submission (at least, that's what I thought it was) but otherwise I think this is very successful--and a reasonable price as well! (Also a great transparent parts pack, if I can ever persuade myself to disassemble it!)

I thought maybe I could appeal to people's better nature and suggest voicing their critiques in a way that didn't insult the work and creativity of their fellow builders, but maybe the truly soulless ones are the Lego fans who don't have any empathy or consideration for other people's passion even if it isn't subject matter they personally share an interest in.

Peak. I'm surprised the poll has a majority of "No, it doesn't interest me'.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm sorry, but I'm feeling that these are pretty underwhelming. The blue fluorite looks good, and the purple amethyst geode is okay, but the other builds just seem rather bland to me. It's just some stacked transparent bricks for the most part. IMO it doesn't have the same appeal as many of the botanical flower sets.

I think a mineral collection is fun, but I have no desire for a Lego made one, sorry. :(

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

I like this set a lot, only one thing I would change. Instead of having shelving, they should've made some of them bigger. And while we're at it I'd buy a much bigger version of amethyst, rhodochrosite and fluorite.

I am very surprised by that, too. Although, I selected on the poll "yes, buying it, if it is discounted". This is a beautiful set. Very well done! I was impressed by the orginal and this official set from TLG is more so impressive. (I'm thinking of the Vader quote as I write this.)

I think it's just a misunderstanding. In some AFOL communities, minifigs are considered the soul of a set and this set unfortunately excludes them.

This. If, at least, Lego would have made a small plaque (preferably without errors) for each pieces, giving the name and composition then this set would have a fairly good educational value.

Yeah.

Imo The original submission was WAY nicer in colorsa

Gravatar
By in United States,

I do WANT to like this set, but it's just not quite there for me.

The Pyrite looks fantastic. If nothing else, I might have to pick up a few of those golden mob heads to create some sort of Pyrite Golem at some point.

The Rhodochrosite and Tangerine Quartz look good. Not much to say other than that.

The Amethyst Geode is... eh. Going for the shape of the minifig-scale piece is cute and looks better than the Ideas submission, but it's just not a shape that screams "geode" to me. There's more rock than crystal and there are no pics of the back and it's just a bunch of cheese slopes. If you can swap out the opaque plates/brinks in there with some transparent ones and an off-brand light brick or something, then maybe it'd be okay.

The Watermelon Tourmaline is bad. I can see they tried for a "raw" appearance, but it is not working. Neither are the trans yellow plates over the opaque green SNOT bricks.

The Blue Fluorite is... well it's okay. But I have to admit that green and purple fluorite are my favorite crystals, so having their inclusion missed for the blue variety is a little painful. Though on a second look, it uses opaque green at the base and has a darker chunk that certainly looks purple, so maybe I shouldn't complain too much. The light blue should certainly glow nicely under a blacklight (or some blue LEDs) like the real thing! So perhaps I truly can't fault them on the choice.

The shelves are cute. The choice of nesting them or displaying them separately is a nice choice for a set like this as it gives more options for display. They're also parts-thin enough that I feel like they don't affect the price as much as some of the "18+" sets do with their bases.

Hmm, maybe I DO already like the set. I might have to look to see if I could design my own scaled-up power crystal (or see if someone else has done so) to replace the Tourmaline. But I can't see myself picking this up without at least a small discount or a good GWP to reach and there's the new Halloween stuff still waiting for an excuse in line first (and the Dreamzzz wave that got delayed here in NA).

Huh, I just tested what I've got next to my bed and you're right, trans-light blue doesn't fluoresce under UV. That kinda sucks.

It does look like there might be some white bricks as a backing, which WOULD fluoresce and the frosted slopes might help catch some of that light, but it's still disappointing.

I don't recall if white ABS fluoresces, either. With ABS, it's really hit and miss (presumably the same holds true for MABS). For instance, red ABS does glow. It looks almost exactly the same under UV light as it does under white, except I know someone who has a few red 1x2 bricks that have a flame pattern under UV. When Bionicle first came out, I found two distinct batches of old brown parts. One was a very dark shade of purple under UV, and I can't remember what the other color was. I've also got whole minifigs where parts in one color react while other parts in the same color don't (most notably Jawson from Space Police III, but even some of my S1 Spacemen react differently from each other).

"A souless set. "

This seems cruel to say about any Lego set but especially so about one created by a fellow fan. Somebody put hard work into representing one of their interests in Lego just for someone like you to call it "soulless"."
