Star Wars Advent Calendar - Day 10

Posted by ,

Day nine was underwhelming, with a seemingly random selection of droid parts in a box, so day ten seems certain to introduce something more interesting.

It should not be hard to surpass a crate...

I never thought a weapons rack, or in this case a tool rack, would mark an improvement on the day before, but here we are! While this design is relatively basic, the selection of tools included is reasonable, even though Babu Frik cannot interact with them. Additionally, the colour scheme works well with the workbench from day two and these link via click hinges, as shown below.

Overall - Though very far from exciting, at least the workshop scene is beginning to grow.

Disney: It's not much, but at least it's Christmas-themed and something to build. 2/5p
Friends: 4.5/5p
Minecraft: The bed looks like an eraser. 3/5p
Harry Potter: 4/5p
Star Wars: 2/5p

Oof. To go from last year without a single weapons rack or filler build in sight to this year’s very filler heavy calendar is a jarring shift. I appreciate the consistency of the theme in this year’s and think future years could learn from it, but they’ll need some more exciting or interesting builds to work.

[Stewie is electronically controlling Chris and is waiting outside the hardware store while Chris goes inside]
Stewie Griffin: All right, now walk up to the counter.
[Chris does]
Stewie Griffin: That's it, ring the bell!
[he does]
Shopkeep: Well, hi there.
Stewie Griffin: Good day, shopkeep.
Chris Griffin: [parroting] Good day, shopkeep. I require a hand-operated buzzsaw capable of cutting through a human sternum.
Shopkeep: What?
Stewie Griffin: It's for a school project. I'm... some sort of student sent here for... oh, blast, what the devil do they study? Uh, Latin class!
Shopkeep: Uh, sorry, kid, I can't sell power tools to minors.
Chris Griffin: Now, look here, you gourd-bellied codpiece! Allow me to purchase the provisions I demand or I shall transform your blue collar into a red one and - who the deuce are you? No, I don't have any spare change. Where the hell would I keep it, in my diaper? Get out of here, you hobo!... Oh, bloody hell, is this thing still on?
Shopkeep: [stares in confusion]

This is shaping up to be the worst advent calendar of all time.

Personal recommendation: put these shop builds at 90 degree angles with the Day 9 crate inside the center.

Yay! It's not a weapons rack! Oh, wait, it's an improvised-weapons rack.

0 points (+ 19 from yesterday = 19): Dy - As @Norikins correctly commented: Half of a gift; the whole fireplace setup should be one.
1 (+ 16 = 17): MC - Not terrible. Not exciting.
2 (+ 29 = 31): SW - Not much, but has connectivity to the other modules and minifig accessories are always a good thing. Type below what you believe the brown looking glas is supposed to represent.
3 (+25 = 28): Ct - Kinda a CAC standard, but modernised. I think it looks good!
4 (+22 = 26): Fr - To get Leo as the girls' company is good (the more, the merrier). He has to sleep in a different room, though. CCTV is on btw.!
5 (+23 = 28): HP - Cute. And so yellow!

That's a prosthetic leg for a pirate droid.

Same, but for a wooden robot (I've been rewatching Futurama).

This was the second bag I got back on day 4; door 10 was empty. I remember having one day's bag sticking out over the edge of another door before, but I've never had one that had shifted over completely before.

A weapons rack. I never thought I'd have to say this about my beloved weapons racks, but this looks a bit awful

This rack makes me more thankful for weapons racks of olde. (sigh)

Very representative of the sequels' quality. Appropriate.

I'd like a Brickset retrospective on weapons racks.

They're generally awful, but I do remember a few creative ones that enhanced the builds. Remember the Endor stump? The Sith fireplace?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

So not a weapons rack but technically a tool rack. Tools too large for the proprietor to actually be able to use...huh...

Oh, but isn't it just so nice when an advent calendar finds new and exciting ways to disappoint you?

I've been noticing this year's ACs have inserts that are a bit too long for the tray they fit in, so the end sections are sometimes bent over so they'll fit. Then it probably just acts like a lobster trap, where stuff can go one way through the "gate", but can't get back afterwards.

I don't think you're making the case you think you're making. Or, you're making the case I think you are making extremely well.

I think it's time for StyleCounselor to hit the nog. It's sun over the yardarm somewhere.

I've really been enjoying this calendar (much more than most people on here, it seems), but I can't deny that having two workshop builds in a row was not a good idea. I don't mind these types of builds (because I understand why they're included), but they need to be spread out a little more than this.

The hell!? I think I might have a faulty Calendar, today I had the gift for the 14th inside this one and in the 14th is another one for the 14th. Oh well, didn't miss out on much

By in Puerto Rico,

This is just a set LEGO wanted to do for Episode 9 and they split it in an Advent Calendar.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I feel the need to point out that the *only* reason that this isn’t a weapons rack is that NONE of the characters introduced so far in this advent calendar use weapons. Otherwise they absolutely would have done so.

(3PO’s one out-of-body experience in Episode II doesn’t count.)

-

Now, with that griping out of the way, *in fairness to them*, while the actual mechanic the advent calendar is built around can’t use any of the tools…

—SPOILER WARNING—

…there are *several* upcoming droids (and a minifigure) who would absolutely use several of these tools. And a couple droids who would use weapons.

The good news is that there will be non-Ep9 things coming, hence the above.

It'd look pretty silly, but you could clip the hooked end of the Riddler's cane onto one of Babu's arms, and maybe the out-of-place telescope is a stool for him to use while working on taller droids.

By in United Kingdom,

After the chair, I decided to buy a more "traditional" Lego star wars calendar. I never got the 2022 one, so I bought that on Ebay, for RRP.

I do kind of agree that this year's calendar is building up a workshop scene, which may be playable once it's done.

However, day-to-day the 2022 one is in a different league. Lots of clever little builds. I'm really enjoying it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't get the hate for yesterday's crate. It's a droid workshop. A crate of droid parts seems quite appropriate, as dos this tool rack.

The 2022 one was pretty good. There were a couple of cool exclusive figures with that one.

I'm positive it'll get better. Of the 14* days left, only 4 aren't "Character"** builds***

* plus one B1 buildable from spread-out parts
** yes, MSE droids are characters.
*** one gift will presumably be another 1-piece gift.

Agreed, that one was great. The non-exclusive figures were good army-builders (except for Luke, obviously), too.

Wow. By the time I realized the 2025 CAC wasn’t likely to see discounts, secondary prices started at $60ish. I did manage to track down _two_ copies on clearance at one store that doesn’t get as much AFOL traffic, so in the end I did get my discount ($24.49ea), but retail three years later? Never seen that on any LEGO AC.

It's different when a boy of CERTAIN AGE is staying over night with two girls of CERTAIN AGE. As a parents you have two options: having that talk or making sure he sleeps in another room.
