What is the creepiest LEGO set?

Posted by ,

There are plenty of horror-based LEGO sets and even whole themes, such as Monster Fighters and Hidden Side. I am not convinced the sets can actually be considered scary, however.

Nonetheless, there have definitely been some creepy LEGO sets, though unintentionally so! Brickset commenters often identify sets they consider creepy and we are going to look at a few of them to celebrate Hallowe'en...

40763 Children's Day Teddy Bear

The most recent entry on our list is one I do not personally consider creepy, although others do and I understand why. The design of the teddy bear's brow creates an angry expression when viewed from higher angles, with gaps along the edge of the 3x3x2 curved bricks positioned to resemble angry eyebrows!

40085 LEGO Valentine

40763 Children's Day Teddy Bear is not the only questionable LEGO bear, as the unfortunate 40085 LEGO Valentine has seemingly been eviscerated. The idea of a cute bear clinging to a love heart sounds lovely, but between the arms not actually wrapping around the heart and the beady eyes, it looks more like a Ghostface victim to me.

30565 Birthday Clown

Clowns are low-hanging fruit where horror is concerned, but I am fairly certain 30565 Birthday Clown is not designed to frighten. Mission failed, in that case, as there is something disturbing about that sausage smile and the eyes, not to mention the blood-soaked club hastily disguised as a balloon. 2040 Brickset members own this clown, myself included. We are all in danger...

6337009 Summer Clown

I am unsure whether the Summer Clown is more or less alarming than its birthday counterpart. While the Birthday Clown looks capable of personally committing atrocities, 6337009 Summer Clown possesses hypnotising eyes, doubtless capable of bending anybody to its evil will. This model is particularly remarkable because I would genuinely have thought it was intended to be scary, but the name and distribution in August 2020 suggests otherwise.

40228 Geoffrey & Friends

Geoffrey the Giraffe has been the Toys R Us mascot since 1948, albeit only named Geoffrey in 1965. There have been three LEGO versions of the mascot and while the disembodied head of 40077 Geoffrey is concerning, 40228 Geoffrey & Friends is a true symbol of fear! The figure has a bizarre beak-like mouth and crazed eyes, which makes its proximity to children on the box all the more unsettling.

75255 Yoda

Lots of large-scale renditions of organic characters have been produced in recent years. Some are quite successful and I think 75255 Yoda has certain qualities, though the eyes are probably not among them. In fact, a combination of the hollow eye sockets and adjustable eyelids can be rather menacing, depending on the pose.

75582 Brick-Built Gru and Minions

Gru is a peculiar-looking character at the best of times, but 75582 Brick-Built Gru and Minions turns peculiar into petrifying! The blocky head is truly nightmarish, made worse by the crooked smile and sinister eyes. Gru's crimes are normally fun, but this model envisages a more serious version of Despicable Me, in which Gru is surely a serial killer.

76443 Hagrid & Harry's Motorcycle Ride

Frightening though Gru's face is in LEGO form, the lack of a face can be ever creepier. 76443 Hagrid & Harry's Motorcycle Ride illustrates this perfectly, as Harry's blank face in particular is disconcerting, featuring only his trademark scar and glasses. It reminds me of 21042 Statue of Liberty, but feels worse on a living character, as opposed to a statue.

Belville Babies Bonus

I cannot discuss the selection of unintentionally creepy LEGO products without mentioning the infamous Belville babies! These insidious infants should not be left unattended at any time, nor should you stare into their eyes. Like the Velociraptors in Jurassic Park, it is not the Belville baby directly ahead you need to worry about, but the two more approaching from behind...

I have doubtless forgotten many other unintentionally creepy LEGO sets, so which ones come to mind for you? Let us know in the comments.

I think the 2013 Geoffrey is much more unsettling

Definitely Yoda for me. I used to own 7194 and the newer version was a very creepy downgrade.

I was not aware of the Belville Babies. Now I can’t unsee them. They win the award for creepiest by a landslide!

Essentially a collection of thigs that are creepy because of their unnatural eyes or things that are creepy because they don't have eyes at all

I don't know about creepy, but those recent Star Wars prices sure are pretty scarry

Gravatar

The creepiest set is the recent police one about training dogs to viciously attack people.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I absolutely LOVE this article. The thumbnail of the yoda on red lightning did it for me.

I would nominate the true face of the bunny fron 4049 Nesquick Bunny and 4299 Nesquick Racer.

And 71004-7 Scribble Cop. I know the context but he looks demented.

I'd also recommend the recent 31213 Mona Lisa.

40204 Pilgrim's Feast is another classic cursed set.

The buildable chewbacca isn't far behind on yoda too.

Somewhere in the back of my mind I also recall a recent Icons-sized set that just looked plain off and they demanded hundreds of euros for it. I must have repressed the exact one. Maybe the basketball one? Maybe it was another one.

Gravatar

2023 Chewbacca?

Gravatar

I propose 75201.

You'll have to do a lot of convincing to make me believe that 40085 is a bear. May be a hamster or a guinea pig...

Belville babies is terrifying. I won't be able to sleep now

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I always thought that Hagrid in 76443 (Hagrid & Harry's Motorcycle Ride) looked like British comic book artist Alan Moore. Don't know if that makes it more or less creepy but it is still unnerving.

Tbf in Denmark all police dogs are family pets when off duty. They will subdue a person if given the order, but the rest of the time, they are basically a big bunch of snuggle bugs.

Yep! Far and away the creepiest and dorkiest LEGO set!

Gravatar
By in United States,

You shouldn't have forgotten about 3220 My Dad in this article... He'll remember your error from within his hollow prison...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I don't think 40763 is remotely creepy... everyone's entitled to one bad picture!

21352, on the other hand, should have been glorious, but ended up really creepy!

Clearly it’s a quokka!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I expected to see more of the big buildable SW figures, like Chewy (75371) and Wicket (75430), and maybe the CCBS figures with human heads, but I guess those aren't so much "scary" as just bad.

And I'm in the minority, no doubt, but I don't find 75255 Yoda all that creepy. Now, I did try to MOC my friend's copy of that set into a Grogu (before 75318 was revealed), and THAT was a scary gremlin to behold....

Also, if we're going to bring up My Dad, we can't really forget about that recent Fabuland RSotD with the rodent staring out from the door the Void, 3663 ....

And speaking of voids, one final nomination from me; it's not a full set, but it's definitely one of the scariest products to come from LEGO in recent times: https://brickset.com/parts/design-49242 Demon Mario will find you, and he WILL jump on your head....

Gravatar
By in Costa Rica,

76282 Five Nights At Rocket's

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Surely Fabuland needed a mention!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The photorealistic eyes on 8510 used to creep me out.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Packaging wise, a recent RSotD 3663 ’s packaging could strike fear into some. I think the recent 77071 is pretty creepy… the eyes. However, right now, 8319 has to be one of the absolute creepiest. The arm on the ground cinches it.

There are so many more, and I’ll edit this again. The whole Ben 10 line creeps me out.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I remember back in the day some people were unsettled by 75110 with Luke's expressionless face.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The thing is, Yoda is kind of creepy, especially the non-smoothed out, non-CGI original.

Gravatar
By in United States,

everyone knows the scariest lego set of all time is 40013

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I nominate 4040 "Nick" and 8325 "Tager" from Galidor! Because that's some body horror if you ask me!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Funniest Halloween article in a while, between "...the blood-soaked club hastily disguised as a balloon, and "Like the Velociraptors in Jurassic Park, it is not the Belville baby directly ahead you need to worry about, but the two more approaching from behind..." Not to mention the comments! Speaking of which, everyone's forgetting 41706. May not *seem* scary, but it's the set that gave us dreadflipper.

77014 it did scare the lego review team

Brick built chewie by far

Gravatar
By in Canada,

It's a bit of a crossover but 30692 from this year is creeping me out a bit. There are a few other Santas from previous years that give off a similar vibe. It's like they want to put kids on the naughty list just to punish them!

Gravatar

I had to move Yoda from the living room to the garage because my daughter was terrified of him.

We also had to leave the Lego aisle in Smyths Toys because the brick built Rocket Raccoon freaked her out

These are hilarious! I'd also submit the giant Mickey in 21352. Between the lack of a mouth, the poorly positioned ears, and the ominous way he looms over the little vignettes, he's a perfectly magical dose of unintentional nightmare fuel!

*Both* 77071's are high-octane nightmare fuel. On one side you have the neurotic pinata, on the other a headless elephant/dementor hybrid ready to devour your soul - truly something from a Hellraiser movie based on Savador Dali's paintings.

3121 Summer Day Out is brilliant. You are first drawn to the baby with its demonic eyes and the dog, which is presumably a hell hound of some kind under the baby's control. All the while we really needed to focus on the pink bear clambering out of its basket and hunting for fresh victims!

I *think* this is based on some H.C. Andersen story. I don't remember the specifics, but it involved meeting three increasingly larger dogs - one with eyes the size of tinplates, one with eyes the size of millwheels, and one with eyes the size of Rundetårn (old circular-base tower in Copenhagen). Luckily they have pretty small tinplates, making this dog look *relatively* normal, I don't dare thinking about how the other two would look.

The dog is one thing, but I dare you to look at the "minifigs" entry on the set page - without the skirt and hat she looks *almost* like something from a modern-day set, except she still has that face...

Gravatar
By in United States,

76434 my scariest set, I couldn't take it out of the shipping box. I would have thought I'd see 76421 in the comments. The Belville babies aren't that bad, the Belville witch was scary. 9464 & 9468 are my creepy sets in a good way.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Missed opportunity for a voting option :D

I'm for Geoffrey.
EDIT: Scrap that, it's the first bear.

To be honest that 40085 looks sort of cute (in an "ugly cute" way) to me.
Yoda looks more derpy than creepy, but I guess that's because I have the eyes in a more "friendly" look and see him almost daily...

And um, the Hagrid motorcycle... I guess it can be creepy - faceless, emotionless people or something? But I'm too much used looking at Protofigs and Modulex figures :P

Thinking about it, there was that "toy worker" minifig from Toy Story 3 or something with a very weird face too. Seeing that head in a casual town setting, hmm...

9464 reminds me of the Bone Wagon from "Grim Fandango".

@Atuin said: "And um, the Hagrid motorcycle... I guess it can be creepy - faceless, emotionless people or something? But I'm too much used looking at Protofigs and Modulex figures"

Yeah, figures without a face were just figures without a face. I've always found the beloved "classic smiley" to be much creepier - everyone has the same empty, brain-washed expression, it's like they would march the streets of my city at night going "I-mo-teph... I-mo-teph... I-mo-teph..."

"Thinking about it, there was that "toy worker" minifig from Toy Story 3 or something with a very weird face too. Seeing that head in a casual town setting, hmm..."

You mean the driver from the 7789 Dump Truck? Weird by itself (guess it's supposed to look like a simple wooden figure with eyes and a nose), but not so much compared to the other figures in that set - the Pill-Pusher Bear, the Hallucination Octopus and the Good Trip/Bad Trip monster (oddly, only the latter is listed as a minifig on the set page).

Honestly, I found all Duplo figures from that era pretty creepy. It's something about the eyes, they're supposed to look cute but comes across as cold, calculating and menacing - compare with Bowser from 72039 and 71431.

If you're referring to the driver in 7789, that's likely based on a Fisher Price Little People character. But the face print on the head does look like it comes from something more...inflatable.

I have no idea how Fabuland didn't wind up with top billing on this list. I mean 341-2 is a cat heading out to pounce on a mouse and bury the body. 347-3 is a "hospital" run by carnivores, sporting an "ambulance" with barred windows, and a lovely outdoor patio serving mutton. 3623 is a cat with murder in her eyes stalking a unwitting lamb in a beauty parlor. 3647 is a classroom of apex predators leering at a cute bunny. 3703 pictures Peter Pig fantasizing about roasting Charlie Crow and serving him in a bed of lettuce. The horror just goes on and on!

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Interesting how the more realistic figures trigger this negative feeling, while cartoonish figures (like minifigures, even the ones designed to look scary) are much more empathetic - this is an example of the uncanny valley effect, although when it comes to LEGO, I think it is more like a cliff followed by a wide shore: the effect takes place at a lower percentage of human likeness (when compared to VFX and robots for example), and it is unlikely that LEGO would manufacture a lifelike figure that overcomes this effect
