Tags adding reinstated

Posted by ,

Since I made changes to the way tags are retrieved yesterday, database performance has improved so I have reinstated the 'add tags' link. I've also changed the colour of them slightly: press ctrl-F5 to get the latest stylesheet if they look the same as before.

Myself, CapnRex101, Matthew and others will be moderating them and removing inappropriate ones. To make our job easier, once a tag has been deleted it can't be re-created and once a particular tag has been removed from a set, it can't be re-added. Examples of tags that are inappropriate are 'Wonderful Set', 'MISB', 'Medium Stone Grey' (in fact all colours), 'Tmnt' (and other tags that are repeating information elsewhere) and so on.

Would you like to be a tag moderator? Contact me and explain why you'd make a good one. Thanks!

I used to help moderate a music database website and it went through something similar when it started to allow users to add tags for music genres to artists and releases. In the end, the site owners had to stop allowing users free rein to add information as so much was nonsense. Instead they developed a moderation queue where we could check whether a) the tags being added were appropriate and b) were pertinent to the releases in question (i.e. so that for a Lego example users don't add an Octan tag to Maersk sets!) before the tags were added into the database.

I'm not sure whether this is something you would want to consider but in your shoes I think I'd be concerned with giving users carte blanche.

It may need to come to that but at the moment I'm happy to see what happens.

There's a flaw in your reasoning. Say a tag irrelevant to the given set is removed. What's not to say it was in fact a perfectly good and useful tag, and was just used out of place, whether that be do to accident or misunderstanding. Deleting the tag will create an irreversible chain reaction, deleting the tag from where is unnecessary, but also from where is entirely useful amd helpful. This part of the system is flawed and should be either removed or altered.

Somewhat silly question: Do you have to actively add tags in order to be a tag moderator or not? I would like to be a tag moderator, but I would probably only add tags when strictly necessary or when someone's missed one in a set. However I can easily spot many inappropriate tags from a mile away and I'm eager to assist with the upkeep of tags. Plus I visit Brickset multiple times every day and have done so for the last year and a half, so I'm reliable.

The website is currently not allowing me to add tags. The button is just gone.

Why can't you just implement a feature in site preferences that can make it that only your own tags show up? Wouldn't that be cool. Please consider!

I've noticed a superfluous tag: "Licensed".

Licensed is already a "theme group". (Saw it on the Freeing Dobby HP set).

@Sir Gareth, you make a valid point about useful tags being deleted and I suspect I'll have to make provision for that. You should now be able to add tags again, you might need to shut your browser down and restart it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That was the problem. Restarted and it's working fine now. Thanks, Huw!

I believe that I am a valid candidate to become a tag moderator because I will add tags where needed and I regularly visit the site (5-6 times a day) so I will be able to delete inappropriate tags rather quickly.

@Huw, I'm also not seeing the add tags button. I've tried shutting browser, and restarting computer. I'm using Google Chrome if that helps.

I've put a check in the code that looks at the length of time you've been a member and allows only those those have been a member for more than 1 month to add them. This is primarily to prevent 'drive by' abuse but it does have the effect of preventing fine upstanding people like yourself from adding them which is not ideal. So, in your case I've tweaked the database to allow you to do so. The link should reappear when you restart your browser.

Excellent! I'm going to go clean up some Chima tags that were completely inaccurate yesterday...

(BTW, news people, official images for Brainiac Attack have surfaced. I think that qualifies as news.)

Applause to @Huw. Never have I seen a site moderator be so accommodating and personal as you. Thank you for all that you do at this site.

Any chance of a tweak too?
I've tried logging out and in again and restarting IE as well as several CTRL+F5s :(

Thanks

Will TAG be added to "Select" for queries?

By in United Kingdom,

I'm only interested in tagging Star Wars sets and @CapnRex101 looks to have this in hand. However, I've only created one tag myself and it appears to have been removed from the sets I tagged already. There is a MANDALORIANS tag which I assumed was similar to Separatists, Rebellion etc. There's also lots of planets where a vehicle or set would be associated, e.g. Hoth, Bespin, Endor etc.

I created the tag MANDALORE, as in the planet, as sets could be associated with the planet MANDALORE without the set being concerned with the inhabitants i.e. Mandalorians.

I won't be wasting my time creating and adding tags just to have them binned. I'm sure others will ultimately feel the same very soon if they go through all their sets and tag.... and then lose the tags.

By in United Kingdom,

^ Yes it could be, let me look into it.

@dee you've been a member so long you broke the algorithm :-) You joined before 2010 so don't have a exact join date but I've tweaked the code to cater for that.

Is there any chance of seeing something to add the same tag to multiple sets at the same time?
I've been going through Hero Factory and it's taking forever.

By in United States,

@Huw:

I had tagged several sets with an "X4" tag, referencing the planet that the Space Police maintain a large prison facility on in The Adventures of Clutch Powers(sticking of course only to sets that actually were on the planet.). It does not have an actual name in-movie, merely a number designation. At the same time, I also tagged several sets with an "Ashlar" tag, referencing the Castle planet from the same movie.

It appears that all of the X4 tags were removed. I understand why it might be very well be removed, since "X4" is a bit ambiguous, so I was commenting to ask if there were any tags that I could use in its place, or if it was just too far out a reference(in which case the Ashlar tag might be worth deleting...)?

A few suggestions for alternate tags that I could use that I thought might have a little less ambiguity:

(Planet) X4
X4 (Planet)
X4 (Space Police)
X4 (tAoCP)

Many thanks for your time!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Lind_Whisperer

I understood the 'Ashlar' tag, but almost every Fanasty Era set was tagged. I narrowed it down to just those sets that appeared in the film.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

So does this mean that if you're a moderator you have to randomly browse sets to see if the tags fit?

I'd suggest a moderation system.

Also, how do i change the site theme again, if that's still available? I think i have it on Classic but when browsing sets, there's no tags or anything like in the picture shown in the article, i presume that's a different site theme?

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Perhaps it might be best if tags had to be approved before they could be used? Not approved each time they're used to tag something, just the creation of the actual tag itself? So, for instance, the tag "police" would have to be approved before people could use it to tag all the police sets. You could have a forum thread where people could request that a particular tag is made available, and the reasons why if not immediately evident, and site admin could 'yay' or 'nay' each one rather than each application of a tag as it is now?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@WoutStopmotion I can say that, as a tag moderator, yes, tag moderators do have to do something like random "spot checks" on sets to check for superfluous or wrongly applied tags :-)

@aleydita That actually isn't a bad idea, it would certainly do something to cut out the "same thing" tags. Then have the regular moderation which we have right now to check whether each approved tag is being used properly.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Sir Gareth

Actually, all the sets I tagged as Ashlar did appear throughout the film. I don't have a copy of the movie at hand at the moment, but I could easily provide screenshots of all of their appearances.

Some of them require a bit of careful comparison(The Dwarves Mine Defender is actually used as an Orc vehicle!), but all of them definitely appeared.

By in United Kingdom,

Having a quick look at this functionality using your example of Power Functions http://brickset.com/sets/tag-Power-Functions, the danger of tags meaning different things to different people becomes apparent. To my mind 'Power Functions' relates to the range of current technic motor elements, and not just a Light Brick, yet to others it seemingly means anything electrical. I feel you run the risk of tags becoming a degraded feature unless it is effectively moderated and the range and definition of tags is controlled.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Lind_Whisperer

My bad, I quickly rewatched the movie and all of them do appear. I re-added the 'Ashlar' tags. Tell me if I missed any. I can also re-add the 'X4' tags, I just need to know which sets.

By in United Kingdom,

@Escapade, we are going to sort the PF issue out.

It's early days for this and I'm learning as I go. Shortly we will be locking some themes to prevent any more tags being added once all that need to be have been, and then, after that, additions will be made only by moderators, perhaps by request in the forum.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

No, for publicly adding tags, that is a bad idea. We should keep it publicly. Instead, add some form of user moderation, where users can report unuseful tags and then those reported tags should get looked after by mods. I think that would be the better system, and if that would work out, i'd love to try moderating. Thinking of it, this system could even create a situation for public moderation and in the end it'll work on itself...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think you might wind up where tags are entirely moderated. It's great to get the community input since there are a lot of ideas out there, but at some point a set (or theme) simply has all the tags that would reasonably apply.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Also, make tag searching easier. Instead of having a drop-down list, use a search bar.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^ Indeed, that is our rationale.

^ The search bar already works for searching tags.

By in United Kingdom,

@Escapade: Blame Lego's constant renaming and recategorising of things (grar Creator Expert). 4995-1 has the PF logo on the box, despite featuring only a manual wind-up winch. The same winch appears in 5893-1; one of the sets for which the PF tag has been removed - probably because the PF logo does not appear on the box.

Much confusion to be had.

Thanks for the quick and friendly response! It looks like Huw has chosen his tag moderators well!

You got most of them, there are just a few ones that require frequent pausing(and checking of minifig inventories) that are easy to miss. I'm going to PM you about them(and the X4) sets since this forum is for commenting on the system as a whole.

Speaking of that, it might be beneficial if there was a specific channel/sub-forum/contact box devoted to tags? That way, it would be a little more streamlined for when situations like this one come up.

EDIT: Would you mind PMing me your PM address? I just realized that I don't know what yours is, and the forum doesn't show your username as being registered.

By in United Kingdom,

This is a really useful feature, Huw. I see CapnRex has made a fine start on the Star Wars theme already, which is great.
May I ask, CapnRex, would it be better to separate episodes 4-6? Every site seems to do Ep1, Ep2, Ep3, CW, EU, etc. yet list episodes 4-6 together as one or as OT. Or am I the only one who finds this odd?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ The grouping of the OT sets is not up to me, but I have added tags for each film in the OT to the relevant sets for the time being. I agree that it is a bit strange and I see no reason not to split them, other than perhaps the fact that some of those sets are not based on a particular film or scene, just the OT in general.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

@Huw: you wrote "You should now be able to add tags again" but that's not working for me, even after restarting my browser. I don't know why the tag 'trailer' was removed but it seems a valid tag for sets with a car pulling a trailer.
For moderation you may want to consider a merge function (like you get on mobile phones for merging contacts). For example the tag 'motor bike' should be merged with 'motorbike', the latter being the correct spelling.
What will you do about (British/American) synonymous tags like 'Petrol station' and 'Gas station'?
And what are you going to do with British/American differences like motorbike/motorcycle? To Brits they are pretty much synonymous while to Americans their meaning is quite different.

By in United States,

I have a question about the validity of some tags... browsing all tags garnered a number of questionable ones such as "Ackar," in which only two sets were included... Ackar as his own set and Ackar in a promotional co-pack with Vastus (who was also a tag)... Should the mods remove these?

Also, "Promotional" was still showing up as a tag on some sets (I saw the Promotional tag still on Jor-El), but clicking on the tag yields no results. Trying to add it says it has been deleted by the mods... If it is deleted, why does it still show up?

I am also contributing a lot by specifying Mechs, Temples, and sets with converting functions... shouldn't "Mech" and "Mecha" be merged? Also, I noticed several sets in "Mech" that composed of a large set and a mech as a tiny element on the side... Should these be included as well, or just sets that are solely mechs?

By in United States,

A bit redundant that a user has added "Justice League" when it's already a system tag for the same sets.
And what is a "Yong Robin"[sic]? Typo or has someone been fiendishly clever in using the Chinese for "permanence" given that the soon to be resurrected Damien Wayne looks to be bulletproof? ;)

Debatable whether the aircraft in the Joker Steamroller 76013 is actually the Batplane and not a Batwing, but as it's named as such in the official set description I'll just grit my teeth on that one...

Gravatar
By in France,

Thanks for this new system. :)

But for the moment, a lot of existing tags seems useless (all those which have only one set) or redundant ("Multibuild" vs. "2 in 1", "3 in 1". Is it useful to distinguish 3-in-1 and 2-in-1 ?). I hope that the system will be stabilized soon. Good luck to all the moderators !

Some sets seems locked (a padlock instead of "add tag"), but there's no message to indicate why.

By in Norway,

I have just tested the Tag function on adding a 2 sets on groups that already existed.
The sets was not in the group even when it was clear that they belog to that group. (Steam Engine and Floats on water) Sets was a old steam engine set, other a Coast Guard set with boats that have the ability to float.
All worked fine for me. They was there when i checked later.
