LEGO Project Hail Mary announced!

Posted by ,

Following a rather predictable announcement yesterday, a completely unexpected new licence has been unveiled today, inspired by an upcoming film! The press release follows:

11389 Project Hail Mary
Rated 18+, 830 pieces
$99.99 / £99.99 / €109.99
Available at LEGO.com from 1st March

Launch into the realm of cinematic science fiction with the LEGO Icons Project Hail Mary (11389) spaceship model kit for adults. Enjoy a creative journey as you craft each detail of this microscale replica, which captures the design of the iconic interstellar spacecraft.

Turn the crank to send the crew module into orbit, simulating the centrifugal gravity system from the movie. Then add the Ryland Grace minifigure and Rocky figure to complete your display. This detailed model makes a striking centrepiece for the home or office and a perfect birthday or Christmas gift for sci-fi lovers.

For those unfamiliar with Project Hail Mary, as I was until a couple of months ago, the movie is based on a science fiction novel written by Andy Weir, author of The Martian. This story follows an interstellar mission to find the solution to an apocalyptic phenomenon that could have severe consequences for Earth, journeying aboard a spacecraft named the Hail Mary and meeting an alien known as Rocky, who is represented in this set.

What do you think of this model? Let us know in the comments.

Definitely wasn't on my bingo card, but I am so excited for this one! I loved the book, am pumped that the movie is being made by Lord and Miller (The Lego Movie!!), and now have this set to look forward to!

By in Belgium,

I was also at first wondering what is “Project Hail Mary”, up until I remembered upcoming movie. And it’s on my watch in the cinema list :D

That trans clear hexagonal “artefact” is a sticker, right? I so much don’t like stickers on trans clear pieces

By in Czechia,

What the hell is this new thing where the LEGO MSRP in euros is now 30% higher than in US dollars?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I know it's not the point, but the characters having their own little stand modules that can either attach to the main stand or combine into a separate little scene is really neat.

You need to check your math.

The film trailer and these related announcements completely spoil one of the best reveals in a book I've read in a long time! It's such a shame, I think the film will be so much better for those going in without a clue about Rocky.

The set looks good, though!

Rocky looks different to how he looked fighting Creed back in the day.

By in United Kingdom,

WOW, probably my most hyped set of the year. Its my favourite book and the film looks stellar (excuse the pun)

My only gripe is it's maybe a bit small for £100 but other than that wow, knocked it out of the park.

By in United Kingdom,

Not sure about this one. Not loving the design of the ship, the scale looks a bit off to me, maybe in relation to the stand.

The Project Hail Mary book is amazing. I'd recommend that!

Why? At the current exchange rate it's almost exactly 30% more expensive in Euro than in US Dollars.
110 Euros currently equates to 130 US Dollars.

@benbacardi : Agreed; the trailer doesn't show what the alien LOOKS LIKE, and now we (roughly) know...thanks TLG...:|

Also, I stand by my statement: Too many IPs, esp. acquiring new ones, while others sit idle...

I never made it past the first part of the book where we watch our hero torturously figure out that he's woken up on a spaceship - the suspense of which for the reader is absolutely zero given the author saw fit to provide a diagram of the ship he's on on page one.

Bit of an odd partnership but hey, if fans of the book like it, more power to them. As a model it looks rather jumbled to me, but that minifig looks top notch. I'm a sucker for a red space suit.

The solution is obvious: the only sets ever released for any given film should be launched on the same day as the movie and there should be no more sets produced after that. Of course, the release dates for films vary around the world and the sets' availability should reflect that, with slightly different release dates in each country.

I foresee no problems with this strategy.

Ok, I don't know the reference/book for this set, but I like it. I'll try to get it with a bit of a discount.

I'm really hoping for the murderbot diaries (All Systems Red). I haven't seen the shows but the books were unbelievable!!
but we might already have the murderbot diaries in another form, because in the book, the Graycris people wore Green, Blue, and Yellow uniforms... sound familiar?!?!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This looks neat, although I'm genuinely struggling to see the part count or value for money. This looks like it should be £50 at the most, am I missing something? Can anyone hazard a guess at the part counts for the ship vs the base? It looks pretty big in the lifestyle shots, but I can't really understand how...?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I love Andy Weir books, so this seems must have but being honest it does very little for me as I prefer minifigure scale. I am not sure this will sell well and thats makes getting a Martian set less likely, which is a shame as it has a lot of potential for Lego sets.

I can't tell for certain (since Lego changed their render pipeline on transparency/refraction) but it appears to be a print by its limited pallet, lack of a 3D border, and how it goes basically to the edge of the element. Everything else on the set appears to be a print as well.

I enjoyed the first chapters of the book as it showed what someone could achieve in a locked room with no windows in learning about his environment. With some very rudimentary tools he worked out he was in a slightly higher gravity environment and could not be on Earth. He had amnesia so it was supposed to be torturous, it was rewarded throughout the book as he overcomes seemingly impossible odds and has a beautiful central friendship which stayed with me long after I finished it. It is a far better novel than the Martian, which I also enjoyed greatly. I guess attention spans are more a curse than a blessing.

It also spoils the mystery at the start of the book. Agree that the best way to watch the movie for anyone having not read the book is to ignore the trailers and, oh, the reveal of this set :D

One of the Martian Lego Ideas sets could be interesting, with space buggy and habitat. Whereas not sure why this satellite looking spacecraft that few have heard off is preferred to any of the Sci-Fi spacecrafts from Space Odyssey to Alien.

Great book, also read Artemis (not the rocket) from Andy Weir

No minifigs (or skeletons) for his other crew members? Seriously, though, this set is a welcome surprise.

Gravatar

@Brickset Did you guys turn off the function for tracking Amazon prices? That was so useful. I used to see the current prices of "Items on my wanted list" on the right side in a small table. It's gone from my frontpage.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Looks good but again, it is too expesive for a few standard pieces and a minifig.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It’s funny, the book specifically says they can’t have the crew module spin like that, it’s too small and would be too hard to include, so the whole ship splits and extends on cables and just circles a shared point.

I wonder if the change was made by the movie or if the flipping was too hard for Lego to include in an orrery like this.

There are some plot-relevant details that aren’t there, either; the ship is supposed to look aerodynamic, with fuel stored in fairings jacketing the crew areas to provide radiation protection. In the book, that’s important. But I assume those are changes made by the movie, since that would be easy to reproduce in Lego.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am an avid reader but hadn’t read any Andy Weir until I picked up Hail Mary a couple of years ago. It was one of the most enjoyable reads I’ve ever had so I highly recommend it to everyone here. He’s only written 3 books so far but he’s batting an easy 1.0000 for me.

I’m surprised and disappointed, though, with how they’re marketing this film as one of the best aspects of the book is how the story slowly reveals itself. I’m nervously hopeful that they find a way to tell the great story. Their work on 21 Jump Street, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The LEGO Movie, and some amount of Solo gives me hope. What the Russos did to the Gray Man gives me fear.

From a LEGO perspective, I’m not sure I understand the draw of the set and certainly not the timing. It almost feels like they’re desperately trying to get ahead of a movie whirlwind with whatever they could throw together, like releasing a rudimentary Rose and Jack vignette in early 1997 just in case it hits. Time has shown us, though, that you really can’t capture that lightning in a bottle. For every My Big Fat Greek Wedding and The Greatest Showman, you get 20 A Sound of Thunder.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Seriously over-priced! It's only 9" long, about the width of a sheet of Letter or A4 paper.
It looks like there's more parts in the elaborate stand than in the actual spaceship...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks neat but the only reason I'm aware of the book/movie is from when this set leaked a while back. I dig sci-fi but I've heard very little about this.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

What I find funny is that - once again - LEGO marketing is calling this thing "iconic".
Maybe it's just me but before this article I had never heard of this ship nor did I know the source material.

Imho something that is supposed to be "iconic" is something most people will have heard of and/or seen.

Things I would call iconic:

VW Beetle
Darth Vader
RMS Titanic
Eiffel Tower
Statue of Liberty
Big Ben
Mickey Mouse

among many others.

This ship for me fails to meet the criteria for an iconic object.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

The price is one thing, as many has pointed out. But 830 pieces? I really cant see where they managed to hide those.

I had never heard of this movie or book, but it sounds interesting. So that's a marketing success. I now know about it. But the set? Probably not for me.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

love the book and looking forwards to the film so this is exciting

Gravatar
By in United States,

If you have not read the book, I highly recommend the audiobook. It was performed by Ray Porter and won audiobook of the year. The book itself also won multiple awards. I personally thought the story was better than The Martian.

Gravatar
By in United States,

OK, this is cool! I'm happy that other people will be able to get it.
I'm glad I was able to read the book before Rocky became an open secret/not a spoiler.

I thought the front section would have looked different too, more bullet-shaped and the same diameter as the rest of the ship. Creative film license, I guess, that doesn't seem like it would detract.

By in United States,

This makes me wonder how many other movies released since my stroke I've missed that I would have been interested in. I can't make it out to the theater, so don't see trailers unless they happen to be attached to be YouTube videos that I watch. Obviously I hear about a lot of them (when there's very little to do all day but browse the Internet and build Lego sets it's unavoidable), but I'd imagine that a good few still slipped by me. But anyway, I loved The Martian (both the book and the movie), and with Lord and Miller involved too, I'll probably at least end up getting the book and, if I like it enough, buying the Blu-Ray.

@ResIpsaLoquitur said:

Yeah, if you told me to name an iconic fictional spaceship, I wouldn't have mentioned this, even if I'd heard of it before seeing this article. I would have named the Enterprise, or the Millennium Falcon, or the Discovery One from 2001: A Space Odyssey, or the Nostromo from Alien, or something else that's been around for at least twenty years.

Gravatar
By in United States,

An icon derives from Greek and literally means "image." Modern usage in the "iconic" sense means "a sign whose form directly reflects the thing it signifies."

I understand the notion of an icon to mean something that inherently captures a large concept just by its own existence. Captain America's shield is iconic because you, the viewer, are very much able to contemplate the concept of the character just by looking at three circles and a star. Much of Star Wars is iconic because the characters and ships are synonymous of the whole concept. If you see R2-D2, you see Star Wars. If you see Darth Vader, you see Star Wars.

So anyway, a generic ship from a yet unreleased movie is difficult to call iconic. Maybe it will be, but way too premature to call it that.

The $800 Millennium Falcon? Sure, that's iconic.

"This isn't about religion, it's about gridiron football."

From Wikipedia:

"Crowley often told the story of a game between Notre Dame and Georgia Tech on October 28, 1922, in which the Fighting Irish players said Hail Mary prayers together before scoring each of the touchdowns, before winning the game 13–3. According to Crowley, it was one of the team's linemen, Noble Kizer (a Presbyterian), who suggested praying before the first touchdown, which occurred on a fourth and goal play at the Georgia Tech 6-yard line during the second quarter. Quarterback Harry Stuhldreher, another of the Horsemen, threw a quick pass over the middle to Paul Castner for the score. The ritual was repeated before a third and goal play, again at Georgia Tech's 6-yard line, in the fourth quarter. This time Stuhldreher ran for a touchdown, which sealed the win for Notre Dame. After the game, Kizer exclaimed to Crowley, "Say, that Hail Mary is the best play we've got." Crowley related this story many times in public speeches beginning in the 1930s.

On November 2, 1935, with 32 seconds left in the so-called "Game of the Century" between Ohio State and Notre Dame, Irish halfback Bill Shakespeare found receiver Wayne Millner for a 19-yard, game-winning touchdown. Notre Dame head coach Elmer Layden, who had played in the 1922 Georgia Tech game, afterwards called it a "Hail Mary" play."

It doesn't look particularly good, just a lot of white cylinders so a bit like a bundle of toilet rolls. If the movie is interesting, it might be something worth having on display. But if the movie flops, then will people want it on display. If you want those cylinders, then it will be a good parts pack but doesn't seem to offer much else.

If I’m very, very lucky, this film will do well enough they finally make the Artemis film, and don’t think I haven’t noticed that the two Andy Weir books with white guys as leads got adaptations but poor Jazz is left in the cold despite being demonstrably cooler than either of them, and the set will do well enough I get a nice The Martian set *and* then an Artemis set when they make the film. Which they’ll do. Hopefully.

(Also while they’re doing lowkey but tense space-based sci fi I would like a Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty adaptation too, please.)

Anyway unless the adaptation turns out to be terrible this is probably a must-have for me. Andy Weir is a fun writer, and it’s always nice to see Campbell/Astounding Award winners do well. Especially when you voted for them.

I'm concerned with the tone of the film after seeing the Hail Mary preview. But I won't give up hope. Artemis was also a great read, but I too would put it 3rd. It had an exciting Flavia-de-Luce feel.
