Free LEGO AFOL book (this week only!)

Posted by ,

Peter C, who writes under the pseudonym Hippie-Ville, has just published a book for AFOLs entitled Hot Tips for AFOL Newbies which, for this week only, can be downloaded for free from Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com.

He writes: "The book explores LEGO project ideas, developing MOCs, creative display ideas, caring for LEGO collections, and the evolving culture of AFOLs. It also touches on the psychology of the hobby — the obsession, the AFOL mindset, and a few of the taboos we all quietly understand.

"The book includes contributions from AFOL builders around the world and references many well-known AFOL creators. In many ways it has become a community AFOL project, filled with photos, “Hot Tips,” and practical ideas for LEGO fans.

"I’ve made the Kindle edition free for the next five days so the AFOL community can access it easily."

So, grab it while you can!

By in Netherlands,

Only from the UK I guess? When I try from the link provided, I get an error that I can only use the Amazon.nl Kindle store. But when I go there, it does show up for free, but when I try to "buy" it, I again get that same message.....even when I'm already there! So then tried from the Kindle app, but seems like that only finds the book at the German Kindle store...so again that same error. I do like freebies, but having to move to another country seems a bit excessive....
(and that's how people turn to piracy....)

EDIT: Solved. Apparently my Kindle account was still connected to Amazon.de Kindle store, as that's the one we Dutch had to use before Amazon.nl existed. Guess I hadn't used it in like 10 years or so? Or it just wan't an issue before?

As long as it's just "assistance", I don't see the problem.
(and apparently it's only for the quiz?)

If it's clearly much more than just that, I doubt many people will make it past page 10 or so....

Somewhat related to his intro but there is always bad stuff going on in the world. It's best to dwell on what you can't control, 2019 was an amazing year for me.

Well, there's a difference between giving ChatGPT a prompt and calling it a day, and writing most of it yourself and using ChatGPT to find errors or inconsistancies, or just to give some suggestions here and there.

AI can be a very powerful tool if used properly. But when used in a lazy way, all you'll get is slop.

Pretty much, maybe even more just "lago", similar to Winnebago? Though in proper Dutch fashion with a rather harsh "g". Even when I'm from the south of the country, known for our "soft g"...

There's even a (pretty old...) song!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSChjspFCtk

I think in most European languages (apart from English) the "Le"-part is pronounced pretty much the same, most variation will be in the "g". To be fair, I'm not sure how the Danish pronounce that.

And thinking about it, isn't the "leh-go" pronunciation a bit weird to begin with? I mean, with no consonant after it in the syllable, wouldn't it make more sense to say something like "lee-go"? Or could it just be a matter of an overcorrected attempt to pronounce it correctly?

Lay-ggggggggggggow, pretty much. With the guttural 'g' that mostly sounds like a cat trying to dislodge a typewriter from its throat. Once you've got that down, maybe we can to work on "Van Gogh".

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

That's the better way to explain our g :-)
(though I guess you're from above the rivers?)

Don't teach them too well though, the moment they learn how to say "Scheveningen", we're screwed!

By in United Kingdom,

Retroactively surprised the pronunciation never came up for us all to argue about on my very pan-European Warcraft guild voice chat. Mind you I suppose as a bunch of mostly 18-21 year olds starting in 2008 with an entirely different extremely time-consuming hobby we were all collectively in our dark ages. (And the Mega sets sucked. I’m still annoyed about the sausagefest of the available characters.)

@WizardofOss

We’d only default to a long eee sound if it was spelt Leego. We basically just say it the same as we say the word “leg” but with an o on the end.

But would you say Mega like "Meh-ga" or closer to "May-ga"?

But to be fair, most languages, and English in particular, aren't exactly always that consistent. I mean, never, lever, sever, fever, all sound practically the same, right? ;-)

By in Australia,

everyone
Thanks so much to everyone who has downloaded and taken a look at my first book!

For a quick reading guide:

• Chapters 1–3 – Foundations of the AFOL hobby and shared community knowledge.
• Chapter 6 – How the AFOL movement has grown into something of a cultural revolution.
• Chapter 7 – Practical methods for sorting and storing LEGO, depending on an AFOL’s room space and building style.
• Chapter 9 – A proactive look at managing the “dark side” of AFOL life: LEGO addiction, LEGO investing, and the rise in criminal incidents.

Of course, feel free to dip in anywhere — many chapters can be read as stand-alone topics.

If you enjoy the book:
— Please consider leaving an honest review in your local Amazon store.
— You can also follow Hippie-ville Adventures on YouTube.

Thanks again for reading!

Meh-ga!

But it’s not so much that we’re never inconsistent - the one thing we’re very consistent about is the inconsistency - but how we’d default to saying it absent a pre-existing known sound. One e, short eh, as the default.

(Caveat that this is my dialect and there are a lot of different ones, of course.)

That's because English isn't *a* language. It's *several* languages stacked on top of each other, hidden under a trench coat so it look's like there's only one.

Well, parallel worlds where a given war went differently are common. Why should the Console Wars be any different?

I've heard that one, too, although this is the first time I think I've seen a source. I thought about using a variation ofthe second sentence of it, in fact.

I pronounce it the way the first LEGO commercial to air on TV in the US did, back in 1955:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faMOdpDmo3g

Granted, I didn't actually see that commercial until sometime post-2004 (my dad found it on a DVD he bought), but the pronunciation had been firmly established by the time I was born.

Never & Sever, Lever & Fever
English pronunciation mostly depends on what language we originally nicked the word from & then add several centuries (or more) of bashing it about

Oh, & closer to Meh-ga. Mayga sounds very American

Depends on the accent. Some English speakers pronounce "lever" so that it rhymes with "never" and "sever."

Hello there everyone,

Thanks so much for having a good read of the book: Hot Tips for AFOL Newbies.
It’s the first ebook that I’ve written, it was a great learning experience and the global AFOL community, which is an amazing place to hangout with some groovy people.
1st time writing an ebook, there’s some interface mechanics that need ironing out, and I shall address those quirks later.

Here’s a new film, just finished this evening - https://youtu.be/bmf4VYsL6_c?si=2GRscMNAkFFpIP24
