Among the August releases revealed yesterday were three Halloween-themed sets that will be exclusive to LEGO.com and brand stores.

As is often the case, there's a pumpkin among them, as well as a somewhat gruesome skull candle, and a colourful Day of the Dead lantern.

By in United Kingdom,

Like the pumpkin - light bricks are always great. Skull candle is pretty good too. Not fussed about the lantern but then I'm probably not the targeted demographic for that one.

By in Netherlands,

The skull is pretty great. The pumpkin, we've seen before. The lantern... is also a set.

Okay, it's kind of growing on me.

By in Germany,

I like the pumpkin just because it contains a ghost, other than that, boring! Easy pass on all this sets!

By in United Kingdom,

Will certainly get the skull. Not sure about the pumpkin as it's almost identical to the GWP that I got a couple of years ago (should keep the GWP whingers happy!)

The 40697 pumpkin was better and I can't help but feel that the skull will start chattering the moment it's out of sight.

I like the lantern best. Hopefully the Catrina day of the dead model will be released at the same time.

The pumpkin is good for including a light brick and having the glow in the dark Ghost, but otherwise its a little boring. The skull candle and the lantern don't interest me at all.

By in Portugal,

You can never have too many pumpkins!

By in Spain,

I wasn't expecting a Lego W40K servo-skull when I woke up this morning, yet here we are.

And a real one is cheaper, and you should still have enough time to carve it the proper way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IVdvQqV8-U "

I disagree. This one has a Glow in the Dark Ghost minifigure and a light brick. The old one only had the light brick. And 40697 was only a GWP, this one you can actually buy.

More pumpkins, when will Lego give us a traditional Neep lantern? :)

I just like the look of the old one better. Which makes it even more sad that the better of the two sets was stuck behind a paywall....

This one looks moldy.

The GWP one was very sought-after and Lego has started selling it. I purchased two a few months ago. ;-)

That GWP 40697 Halloween Pumpkin has a brick built ghost, while this one has a glow in the dark ghost minifig. But actually the new pumpkin is bigger and has more details. It has a top and a small compartment inside, like a pumpkin box.

I can't really tell which one I'd like more yet...

By in United States,

I thought that pumpkin was $20. Is must be bigger than I thought?

Getting ready for the new season.

By in United States,

Is the 2x2 round brick in the bottle in the skull set a new print? I figured it was probably reused from a Harry Potter set, but it appears to be original. Maybe it's a sticker...

40872 appears to be 12.4 studs wide, while 40697 is 11.8 studs wide. Bigger, yes. Enough to brag about? You can round it up to being one stud wider, but then again you can round both widths to being 12 studs.

Both of them have light bricks, so I’d guess the old one also has a removable lid with a hollow box inside, but these are primarily intended to just house the light bricks. In the fully constructed models, those boxes aren’t truly empty.

The Skull Candle looks odd with the white background. The teeth disappear

Real pumpkins are certainly cheaper but they're also ephemeral—you can't exactly buy one and reuse it year after year (let alone rebuild it into something different if the mood strikes you).

I think both this pumpkin and the previous GWP one have their own appeal. This one feels a bit more naturalistic (with green spots and more varied curves). They'd probably look good together, too!

Well, if you buy a real one now for next year, by then it will be a lot easier to carve!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Probably will get the Pumpkin. Not sure about the Skull. The Lantern would be a great parts pack if/when the price is reduced. I'm not into the dios de los muertos theme but it's quite colorful.

Gravatar
By in United States,

These all look like sets that should be GWPs in October and not ones being sold.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

If you don’t carve the pumpkin it can last a surprisingly long time. I’ve still got a little ornamental one from last year and aside from losing its green stripes it’s carrying on just fine and still hanging out next to my favourite chair.

(Its companion in small ornamental squashness, however, went wrinkly around January and had to go to the great compost heap in the sky.)

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

You could also just spray the pumpkin with hairspray or rub it with petroleum jelly or WD-40.

In those cases, I probably wouldn't immediately put a lit candle inside of it unless you plan to very effectively and very briefly go trick-or-treating as the Human Torch.
