Unikitty Fun Pack

©2015 LEGO Group

The other big story that broke that yesterday all kicked off while I was out, so thanks to Matthew for posting the news when it became available.

I've been catching up on it this morning and hopefully I've managed to add all the sets that have thus far been announced to the database. If you're aware of others please let me know in the comments.

The products can be pre-ordered from Amazon.com here and here and will ship at the end of September. They have not been listed at Amazon.co.uk yet as far as I can tell.

By in Germany,

Maybe I'm late to the party, but is Wizard of Oz an official LEGO theme now?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Yooha As far as the game goes, yes. Although nothing has been announced about any non-Dimensions related sets.

By in United States,

I think they will release several overpriced mini figures this way, then release an official set / line when everyone forgets that there was the Ideas set LEGO declined.

By in United States,

Warner brothers owns wizard of oz, so that is why they are able to put it into the game without necessarily giving TLG rights to make additional sets apart from the game.

By in United States,

@rmlewisuk, thank you. No wonder I didn't find them.

By in United States,

That Wonder Woman set looks like a trans-clear gold mine. And the Marty McFly set will be a favorite with Back to the Future collectors for the hover-board (I'm no fan of the movies, but the skateboard from the Ideas set seems a feeble excuse). Oh, wait - there's a new game? :P

By in United States,

The Wizard of Oz is interesting. I hope they do a full line of it someday.

By in United States,

The Wizard of Oz 1939 film is owned by MGM, not Warner. Of course, the original source material is--I believe--public domain, so Lego could make its own Oz figures as long as it doesn't too closely resemble the 1939 film. Believe me, Marvel Comics has a line of Oz books based on the original novels and doesn't resemble the film at all.

Having said that, the Lego stuff clearly resembles the 39 film, so they must have gotten permission from MGM somehow.

By in United States,

Goldenguy kind of brings up a good point. LEGO Ideas can't make any new molds, yet LEGO makes a new mold for just this one set? Of course $30 for a mini figure and 50 parts their profit margin will be through the roof. lol

Gravatar
By in United States,

^ LEGO makes new molds for non-Ideas sets all the time.

By in United States,

I don't find the prices to be THAT bad, considering there is the electronic baseplate, but 12 USD sounds much more reasonable.

By in United States,

@ResIpsaLoquitur - Warner purchased the catalog of MGM movies prior to 1986, so they own the rights currently. It was originally a MGM film, but Warner is calling the shots now.

I wonder if there will be retailer exclusive versions of the starter sets (or even booster packs) like Skylanders did. I also really wonder how well they'll handle availability. Skylanders was especially bad about wide availability of figures and it was never clear that it was intentional so much as failing to anticipate demand. Would hope we don't need to pre-order every darn thing just to be sure of getting hold of them in a timely fashion.

I'm really starting to like this whole idea... however it does break my heart just a little bit that the stunning Wizard of Oz ideas set was rejected. That was a set I really hoped for.

By in United States,

It looks like the expansion packs come with special round bases which act as the in-game content and then the rest of it is LEGO parts? If sales we see on Skylanders and Disney Infinity are any indicator, it will be best to wait! Interesting builds and themes. I bet we won't see any Star Wars or Marvel - they would appear in Disney Infinity.

By in Canada,

@TitanArch: Whether it's a good idea to wait depends on demand. There are some Amiibo figures from Nintendo that are almost impossible to get in certain countries unless you pre-order them because they sell out so quickly, and I hear that some of the other NFC games have a similar problem from time to time. The fact that some figures end up on deep discounts doesn't guarantee that they'll ALL linger on shelves the same way.

Granted, as a toy company, LEGO might be a bit better equipped to foresee these sets' demand than Activision/Disney/Nintendo. Still, stories about "LEGO shortages" in certain countries are not unheard of, especially around the holiday season.

And I agree, Disney-owned properties are unlikely to show up, at least not unless we get to a point where both Disney and LEGO recognize both games have the strength to survive in the long term and are not a threat to each other's survival. Who knows if that would ever happen?

Certainly Disney has not been afraid to license Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars characters to WB Games for the "regular" LEGO video games, so it's not like there's some deep-seated animosity between Disney and WB Games that will keep those two companies from cooperating. But NFC games are new territory for both companies, and I can see why they'd have some trepidation about licensing their characters to a competitor in this case.

By in United States,

@ResIpsaLoquitur Maybe while they were getting permission for that Stargate? :P Kidding, there's obviously no restriction on using mechanical wormhole harnesses.

I kinda want to see a lego version of the MGM roaring lion when the game boots up.

ATTN: TLG

Smash Bros-style LEGO crossover fighting game anytime, please and thank you.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wait, they have licensing with The Wizard of Oz now?

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Thanks for this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So are the figures available to be separated from the base? Wizard of Oz will sell well if that is the case.

And what is the new piece that was made for Dimensions?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I am not sure I like this idea.
It sounds like very, very expensive lego.

Although it could just be a craze too far?
TLG are very late to jump on this bandwagon.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^^ The figs appear to separate, since the models can. Also, the bases are labeled, implying that they're the only important parts.
The new piece people are talking about is Marty McFly's hoverboard.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Utar Empire I second you on that wish for a Smash Bros-style LEGO crossover game.
That would be simply epic. I have wanted one of those for awhile.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't really care about any of the minifigs, but I want just about all of the micro builds!

Gravatar
By in United States,

You know what concerns me? Unless there's evidence otherwise, I'm guessing that the minifigures have been mounted to electronic disk pieces like the new magnets. If that's the case, I will be fairly disappointed. If that's not the case, guess we all dodged a bullet there! :P

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@chrismajor2124 I don't think that's the case. Look at Unikitty... the bases have two studs, Unikitty is only attached by one. If they were glued down, would they have studs to begin with?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Uhm, Wiched Witch? haha, you should fix that one Huw.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Good thing they called them "Fun Packs", because otherwise I wouldn't have realized a $15 polybag was "fun".

Gravatar
By in Australia,

See, what I'm most interested in is whether this is Lucy and Batman *after* they've broken up in "The Lego Movie", or before?

It looks like it's after they've broken up, and that's gonna make for a really awkward journey to save the world.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I'm just glad the current price of these are actually cheaper in Canada for once...at least for now. Pre-order on Amazon.ca while you can my fellow Canadians.

By in Germany,

when i read the announcement of LEGO Dimensions here on Brickset i had no idea what these games marketed as "toy-to-Life" are. last console i had was PS one. Bricks don't need a new console every couple of years, so i came back to bricks as a hobby. i researched it and read about Skylanders and Disney Infinity. in my opinion it's so wrong from so many perspectives and on so many levels.
when activision made their Skylanders it was a business decision to secure their investment in a new game and to prevent copies with this kind of software protection dongles. of course the banks finance stuff like that and handout almost unlimited creditlines for projects like that.
Activision didn't wanted to sell toys. it's a brilliant marketing of the concept: make the slave love his chain, and then buy a new one with joy again and again. little kids idolizing and iconizing software protection dongles because they've been wrapped in colourful plastic. omg, so many nooo's. anykind of innovation inside the brick has ended. for me this game is a massive sign that lego is not going to defend or support the brick system with innovation . the main focus is now on the minifigures.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

^ no, really. Current generation (and last generation and even before that) console games are already full of DRM, you absolutely do not need any kind of "dongle". Current generation consoles have not been compromised like the generations before. Even though the PS3/X360/Wii have been compromised, illegal copies of games play a far lesser role than in the days of the first PS. Online play and updates are important now and it is not as easy as burning a ROM on a disk anymore.
The reason Skylanders was published is essentially because you can make a lot of money with little content. Skylanders is extremely successful, because it has different kinds of attractions. Firstly, you actually NEED more than the starter-pack figurines to actually play the whole game. You need all the elements to access all areas and you will have a hard time fighting the bosses with few figurines. Secondly, the figurines can be played with without the game, kids actually do that. Thirdly, you can take them with you to your friends place and play with them in their game and you can trade them, too, they are not bound to your copy of the game. So, instead of selling a video game which makes them 50$, they sell you a ton more figurines, which are cheap to produce and can be made obsolete with a new game. It is simple, it is brilliant and it works extremely well.
Lego does not license a game like this, without having done a ton of research and looked at the market. They KNOW people love the minifigs and buy them by the truckload, it works perfectly with the collectable ones. So, combining this with the really good TT games which are equally successful will work out great for Lego.
The difference might be (we will have to wait and see the actual sets) that they secondary market value for these sets might not decline as fast as for Skylanders. I have dozens of Skylanders which I bought for very, very little money (complete standard set for the first game - 20 Euros, they are simply not wanted anymore). If the Dimensions sets are one hundred percent compatible with the standard bricks, the sets might simply not become cheaper at all over time, because the attraction stays alive.

By in United States,

Do we know the prices on these yet?

Gravatar
By in United States,

^ Yup. All of the Fun Packs are $14.99, the Team Pack is $24.99, and the Level Pack is $29.99.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The bases for the minifigs and the models look potentially useful, ill get a few of these just for those parts.

@Huw
On another note, when will.you guys judge the mixels series 4 challenge?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Ha, well in Australia the fun packs will be about $20, team packs $30 and level pack $35-$40
It sucks
For example the penguin set from the last lego batman line cost $20.00! Hopefully we can see some change in the future :l

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Love the idea but due to the numbers of packs they will put out (and saying that you can play with up to 7 at a go).....thats frightening. I think I saw somewhere that the day the game is out there will be £300+ worth of stuff to buy.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I missed out on the Ideas DeLorean cause I didn't like the design (specifically the wheels) and thought, how cool is that - a mini version, Marty and the hoverboard! Oh wait it is 30€? OK, moving on..

Gravatar
By in United States,

Has anyone been able to find a retailer selling the Ninjago Jay fun pack? amazon is not listing it. Here is an image of it http://i.imgur.com/Mt0x4Nr.jpg

Gravatar
By in United States,

I kind of wonder, will the sets and mini builds end up being glued?
