Two more Star Wars constraction sets revealed

Posted by ,

A blog at Wall Street Journal was the unlikely place LEGO chose to reveal two more Star Wars Constraction sets today, General Grievous and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The article mentions that the last two of six to be released later in the year, Jango Fett and Clone Commander Cody, will be revealed at the Star Wars Celebration event in the USA that kicks off on Thursday.

Grievous looks incredible, and frikkin' huge. Very cool that his arms can be latched together to form just two like in the movie, though his hands will probably look weird in that position. I assume he'll be the $35 set mentioned in the press release.

Obi-wan is obviously less exciting, though his face does look better in this form than Luke's. There's precedent for a stiff, plasticky-looking Young Obi-wan in the Clone Wars cartoon, so we're all used to it.

Boooo to releasing Jango Fett over Boba. And a Clone over a Stormtrooper, for that matter. I guess it's just TLG's way of getting us to keep our fingers crossed for a second wave :)

I'm very interested in those lightsaber pieces...

Grievous has a very creative build, though it is awkward at points (like how his shoulders are beefier than his chest). I'm not sure how his shoulder articulation will be when his arms are joined — I guess I'll have to try it out with the pieces I already own.

As a human character, Obi-Wan has a much simpler build, but he's well-proportioned and has a great head sculpt. Loving his new shoulder pad elements, in addition to all the other useful White and Brick Yellow (tan) pieces. Hope those shoulder pads appear in more sets, themes, and colors.

Always glad to see continued innovation in the constraction category!

After seeing the Darth Vader Ultra Build, I was hyped for Grievous. Yet I find myself disappointed. He looks like a mess in my view, the arms lack armour and the shoulders are beefier than the chest. Other than some cool recolored pieces I don't see a reason to get this figure...

I NEED this Grievous so bad!!!

By in United Kingdom,

Grievous is mine. The minute it is on shelves. Getting impatient... :-\

I am quite willing to buy Grievous for the tan armor, and the building technique. One of the best Constraction sets ever! :D

And Obi-Wan, oh the glorious offering from LEGO is taken. That cape, that head, those...! :D

Looking forward to Cody as well, hope the armor is a good color for MOCs. :)

Kenobi doesn't look too bad - though I am surprised they're still making CW sets. Way better than those Hasbro big exchangeable figures.

wow Grievous looks amazing!

Grievous is okay, I like the connectable arms. I think he looks way too skeletal, though. Maybe it's the holes in the bones, but it feels like some more shells on the legs and arms might improve it. Also not a fan of the Bionicle ribcage. Obi-Wan looks great.

By in United States,

For the people complaining about Grievous' shoulders: NO part of him is "beefy", not the chest or shoulders. he's all very spindly and thin. For the figure, the shoulders are a little too big, but I think that's the lego group trying to recreate his hunched look.

I'm going to be upset if he doesn't come with a cape. his cape was badass.

2: they're doing 3 fighting pairs. that's why we're getting cody and jango, maybe they're teasing us before boba and han.

I expect the Grievous figure to be the most expensive of this wave - and I'll pay the money. If he doesn't come with a cape, I'll head to the fabric store and make one!

I come back from watching Season 1 of the Clone Wars, and what do I see? Clone Wars figures! Fate is giggling behind its fingers right now...

Obi-Wan looks pretty much like I'd expect. Is he worth $15-$20? No, probably not. The face looks quite accurate to the strange computer modeling of him in the cartoon, so he's actually pretty good in that respect. Pretty boring tho.

Grievous doesn't have enough tan armor, but the four lightsabers, hulking posture, and face are boss. That guy is an awesome parts pack for bones and stuff. I want this guy.

GIVE ME GENERAL GRIEVOUS! Obi-wan looks better than Luke. So far the villians look way cooler than the jedi. I am excited for a clone trooper because he probably have a clone helment instead of a human head.

By in Australia,

The Grevious looks great apart from the shoulders, and even though I wasn't going to buy any of these, I now might. The Obi Wan is ok.

By in Netherlands,

"Constraction" sets? Whatever.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, Grievous is incredible! I think the only thing they could have done better is his hands.

By in United States,

Any Idea when they are going to be released? Grevious is the only one I want so far. He actually looks like he should. The others I am not so sure about. Vader is decent but Luke and Obi-Wan I don't like the face of even after watching the clone wars cartoon. I didn't like Dooku's Beard in that one either.

@Xerics: The official release date is September, but it's not uncommon for sets to start showing up a month or so before they're officially released.

By in United States,

So far I am impressed and I think I will end up picking up a few of these. And this is coming from a casual Star Wars fan and I've never owned a Constraction model..so LEGO is doing something right.

By in United States,

@Sethro3 Are Bionicle sets categorized under Constraction?

Grevious looks astounding, albeit pricy.

Schweeeeeeet!

By in Argentina,

I believe Grievous should not have 4 hands, but four parts with two fingers in each, I dont think the arms can be put back together to form only two and look good like that, that is a little disappointing in a figure of this size. Nevertheless, it looks quite awesome in this position.

@Xerics: They are. LEGO considers BIONICLE the first constraction theme. Arguably Throwbots/Slizer would also qualify, but those sets were no longer around when the term "constraction" was coined (the first use of the term that I know of is in the 2004 annual report), and were never really marketed as anything other than Technic sets. BIONICLE started out as a Technic subtheme but by 2004 it was considered a theme of its own.

There was a Lego Cuusoo project a few years back almost identical to this. It got to 10K but was never approved...

@TSK15: At the time, there were concerns about a licensing conflict with Hasbro. Hasbro has had an exclusive license to produce Star Wars action figures since they acquired Kenner, something that has frequently gotten in the way of Star Wars minifigure packs as well (this is why LEGO Star Wars battle packs ALWAYS include a substantial buildable vehicle or fortification while battle packs from other themes often do not, and why minifigures are no longer able to be detached from LEGO magnets).

I'm not sure how LEGO was able to resolve that conflict in this case. Perhaps the exclusivity of Hasbro's action figure license expired when Disney acquired Lucasfilm, or perhaps something made LEGO more confident that buildable action figures like this are more "building toy" than "action figure", at least enough to withstand a legal challenge.

Oh, if anybody's interested, LEGO has posted a video of General Grievous showing a complete 360-degree spin! Really showcases what an elaborate and imposing set he is. https://twitter.com/LEGO_Group/status/588788057224052736

Grievous is really good. Obi-Wan is passable. :P

Oh man, I hope they make Commander Nefarious, Captain Imabadguy and Admiral Bonetopick next!

Grievous is amazing, Vader is cool, Obi-Wan is pretty good, and Luke is... Different.

LEGO revealed Cody today! https://twitter.com/LEGO_Group/status/589131287270592512

His torso and legs aren't as fleshed out as Luke's or Obi-Wan's, but he's still a pretty nice design. It's good to see CCBS being used in conjunction with the modern Technic panels. Aesthetically they're a great fit!

Also, so glad that we're getting those shoulder pads in more colors! Those look incredibly useful.

By in United States,

Call me crazy but these are pretty spiffy. Vader, Grievous, and now Cody make sense for a line like this and I think they are well done. Had these come out almost 40 (ghasp) years ago I would have been all over these as well as the trusty 3 and 3/4 inch jobbies we had.

By in United States,

An addendum: these are meant to be fun or collected. Their ability to be super-posable is a definite bonus. And for the stop motion gurus out there why not grab these guys and have a tremendous amount of fun? The play value loaded into this line is incredible.

By in United States,

@Aanchir, agreed about the disappointments and the excitements. Though I do hope they continue making new bone elements to. I still feel like there's a lot they could do with the system.

My theory about the licensing is that once Disney got it they told hasbro to suck it up and deal with it if they wanted to keep their licensing agreements. Hasbro isn't going to argue with Disney and at this point Lego is a much bigger name in the toy industry as well as the corporate world, so maybe now Lego has the clout to insist on some things where as even 5 years ago they might not have. Though I think it has more to do with Disney giving the all clear. I'm honestly excited more for these than I am wave two of Bionicle. I'm still going to buy em all, and the new parts look cool(cept for those lame literal bone pieces), but the sets themselves look lame. These have some interesting construction and new parts so I'm eager to get my hands on these first.
