Doctor Who and Chell minifigs
Posted by Huw,
Yesterday's Dimensions instructions discovery unsurprisingly generated a lot of interest both here and on other fan sites. After I had gone to bed others were prompted to poke around on the LEGO server to see if there are other instruction booklets in the same number series. It turns out there are: Doctor Who, Portal 2, Jurassic Park, The Simpsons, Scooby Doo, and I suspect more will be uncovered soon. I've added the covers of them to the database.
The Doctor Who and Portal books provide us with a better glimpse of the new minifigs, Peter Capaldi's Doctor and Chell:

Is that a new hair piece for the doctor...having that in black/dark brown would have been really useful for me recently.
Interesting to get a bit of a glimpse at a new portal gun part and new sonic screwdriver part.
So the sonic in the set won't just be a lightsaber hilt with a stud on top!
I am super excited by the Portal set, which is frustrating because I had been on the verge of saving money.
Thankfully it finally confirms that the minifigs are not permanently attached to the bases.
LEGO PORTAL GUN. YES.
Nice touch with the screwdriver. Hope its in the Ideas set.
Love that portal gun piece.
These both look pretty fascinating, I must say.
It looks like TLG have deleted the pdf files.
Yes...
Oh well. The horse has bolted. It's a Kentucky Derby by now.
Huw, you better be careful or the Lego Group might prevent you from searching their piece/instruction servers to populate your site since people continually find these things out ahead of schedule. Either that or the Lego Group needs to use better caution on what they put on those servers.
I think the new sonic screwdriver part and 12th Doctor's hair piece could mean they are planning a Doctor Who theme. They don't make new parts for Ideas sets, and they wouldn't make two new parts just for a game pack and leave them out of their Ideas set. It would be most likely, if they have made two new parts for an Ideas set and a game pack based off it, that there is more to come. The Portal set throws my guess off a bit, but a Portal set is completely possible, too.
Also, I believe I read somewhere that they cleared up the licensing issues about the Daleks before they accepted the set. That was why they turned down the first one, but they fixed the issue and that was why this one got in.
Actually I didn't find the first one, 'Brickbuilder' emailed me about it.
There are two methods to find them: 'brute force' and searching via the customer services portal. I use the latter.
I'm going to make a Malcolm Tucker minifig.
LEGO SONIC SCREWDRIVER!!!
My inner nerd is happy now.
I would love to have a normal Portal set.
So, they took a character out of a video game, so they could make here into a minifigure, and then put her back into a different video game? :P
^Lego-ception, or is it Videoception?
So do we know if the legs are molded on those "Minifigure Stands" yet? Or if you just place the minifigure on it? Either way, I'll be happy with whatever! :D
They are separate. The instructions show that, since the legs in the "how to build your minifigure" section are not shown attached to the bases. LEGO has confirmed that they are regular figs, anyway.
Thanks @8BrickMario!
Well the Sonic screwdriver is with the Dimensions figure. The set one could still be a lightsaber hilt with a 1x1 round trans plate on it.
Considering it's another rejected licensed from a set project, I wouldn't say I'm 100% happy about this. I'll keep looking forward how LEGO make the best use of the franchises they try to get regardless of how FOLs think. But generally I think Padme's short bun hairpiece works better for this Chell.
Am I the only one who finds it weird TLG buys new licenses for themes that have never had 'real' sets, such as Portal, while having no Star Wars-themed Dimension sets?
> while having no Star Wars-themed Dimension sets?
Its rumored that Disney'related 3rd party licenses including Marvel, Indiana Jones and SW are having conflicts with WB, the creator of this game. To me, the real deal should be that LEGO's own original themes don't have roles in this game.
Star Wars is owned by Disney and as such will be featured in Disney Infinity 3.0. That's a direct competitor to LEGO Dimensions, so there's absolutely zero chance that you'll ever see Star Wars in LEGO Dimensions.
@LordofLego
We've learned time and again that there actually are no "rules" of Cuusoo/Ideas because TLG keeps breaking these "rules" themself. Just as they do with the CMF line, they can make as many new pieces for as big or small a project as they wish.
The "no new molds" "rule" was just there to discourage people from suggesting unfeasible amounts of new parts, suggesting that Lego make new pieces that were not in their brand image/fit or just keeping suggestions financially doable. If the right opportunity popped up that needed just one new part, I have no doubt they would have done it if necessary. They've made 2 "pointy hat with elf ears" prototypes that ended up on the Christmas Elf and Goblin from CMF. Gee, I wonder what those might have been for....?
(Hint: Zelda. Didn't happen, though. .....yet.)
I really like the portal gun. I gotta have that!
The reason the Dimensions sets have new molds (such as the Doctor's hair and screwdriver) is to make them legal for Ideas. If they release them externally, then they're still valid for an Ideas set, since they can claim that the moulds were developed for another source.
By the way, shouldn't the title of this article be "12th Doctor and Chell minifigs" or "Doctor Who and Portal 2 minifigs"? The naming is inconsistent, since one is the name of the show, and the other is the character's name.
While I am a big Doctor Who fan, I think I'll skip this one. If it were Tom Baker, Sylvester McCoy, John Hurt or David Tennant though...
Isn't Capaldi the 13th Doctor (because of John Hurt...)?
Not too keen on the face of Peter Capaldi's Doctor, definitely not a figure I'm interested in as the outfit isn't particularly my favourite of his costume, but I think other than that it looks good. Interested to see the Daleks that will no doubt appear.
As for the Chell figure, the figure looks ok though the Portal gun seems off, stretched a little. Plus the handle looks out-of-place considering normally the hand attaches inside the gun.
@SimonJohnson
12th Doctor
13 different incarnations
Come on! They at least need a pack with Chase McCain in it! And maybe Rex Fury! Though I might get the Scooby Pack even without this game...
@DanRSL All they'd need to do with the goblin's pointy hat would be to add a small hole in that centre peak, then mould a hair accessory (similar to the Friends' bows/hair clips) to go on the front... Then it's just the Master Sword... Other than that I can't think of any new pieces (unless they made a specific Triforce accessory). Lord of the Rings brought in hair perfect for Zelda and Ganondorf already.
... Then we need a big-fig of Ganon.
I made my own Peter Capaldi doctor at the Lego Store. He has some sort of black suit with a watch chain, Cole's face, and a normal grey hair piece (the same as Obi-Wan Kenobi)
The 2 sad things about this are that Lego is totally going to use this an excuse to go against the new new molds in Ideas stuff.
And that we can get Doctor Who Lego before Star Trek Lego.
@Simon. In real life, yes; Peter Capaldi is the 13th Doctor we've seen in the TV series. He
is called the 12th Doctor outside the show but in the show he's just called the Doctor, like most of them are.
According to Doctor Who fans, though [insert nerdy explanation of fifty years of TV, books, comics, radio shows, alternate universes, silly theories, stories that went nowhere, timey-wimey and John Hurt's one was called The War Doctor] which is simple really!
I'm happy they made the sonic piece, but slightly surprised. Other accessories such as the new sling shot piece from the Simpsons Minifigures Series 2 could be used again in other sets, but the sonic is, well just a sonic. Outside of Doctor Who sets, I can't see this being used again.
That's why there will be Doctor Who sets!
The reason we have Doctor Who and not Star Trek is because Star Trek is fimly out of LEGO's potential licenses, as it's held by someone else. Doctor Who just got released from Character Building, and now LEGO has it.
I need that portal gun piece for my Citizen Brick Chell figure
