Our first look at the Bad Piggies!

Posted by ,

LEGO has just tweeted this image of a pig from the forthcoming Angry Birds sets, set to be launched next year just ahead of the release of The Angry Birds Movie in May.

You might notice that Chuck, Bomb and a few other characters appear around the edge of the image too, similar to the pigs which made a cameo appearance in July when Red was revealed.

Take a look at the trailer for the film if you haven't already and let us know what you think of the theme in the comments.

So, has everybody got over their hatred of this theme yet, or I am the only one who thinks it's not that bad?

Gravatar
By in Bulgaria,

I like that it uses minifig arms at least. I guess the real key to the success of these sets will be the success of the film though.

If the sets have new parts/parts in new colors, then I'll be fine with it. Don't care for the figures though, since I don't care about Angry Birds anymore.

I like the egg mold. That may come in handy, although too large for normal eggs. May be used in MOCs in interesting ways if it has an anti-stud on the bottom.

Oh no.

Oh... no...

By in United States,

Yep, Angry Birds is still a thing. We'll just wait and see how the turn out.

By in Slovakia,

What's a pig? :-P

By in Australia,

Yay, another expensive theme that probably won't do too well.
In all seriousness though, we probably shouldn't complain about it, since it seems more for younger kids now that we all hate the franchise.

By in United States,

It will be interesting to see if the sets contain catapults/slingshots or anything to be knocked over. Obviously, some game mechanics would be lost, but it might still be interesting.

Still can't say I like the subject matter, though :P

While I don't hate it, I still have absolutely no interest in this theme. The subject matter aside, the images that have surfaced, like this one, don't appeal to me in the slightest. That's a good thing I suppose as I can easily ignore it and move on.

I'll pass on Angry Birds. Not up my alley. It's the same problem I have with Minecraft, a few molds I want (Minecraft Creepers/Angry Bird Eggs) but the rest doesn't interest me.

Besides I still need to save my money to get the Lego Movie stuff before they are discontinued.

Now if it was Angry Birds Star Wars... Maybe then I would be a bit more interested.

Meh. Just from this, I doubt I'll buy many, if any, of the sets. The new egg piece does look great however, really like it.

As soon as my niece became old enough to go watch movies I got a new appreciation for this kind of movie - I think she's going to love this. Not everything has to be aimed at AFOLs.

BTW I wouldn't be surprised if that Bad Piggies ship in the trailer at 1:17 is one of the sets, which I would definitely buy. Nice steampunky looking thing.

Also based on the trailer, wouldn't be surprised if we get a lot of nice jungle terrain style elements.

This has the potential for a lot of new parts and definitely a lot of new colors.

By in United Kingdom,

While I won't be rushing to the cinema, in the same way I eventually see most Pixar movies, the trailer makes it seem worth a watch.

Can't say the theme massively appeals to me, but I'll reserve judgement until I see the sets I might well be tempted by a few of the minifigs. However Lego is potentially on to a winner here in terms of playability. Given the kinetic nature of the franchise I can imagine some pretty interesting play features, and hence possibly some interesting builds. Though probably not enough to entice AFOLS, might make them a hit with younger builders.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Oh no, less posability than a big-fig, is that even possible?!

^ Have you seen the original Harry Potter troll?

By in Canada,

Glad to see the comments here are a little bit less over-the-top than the ones I saw on Facebook.

I think a lot of AFOLs get way too picky about what new themes LEGO introduces. Not every theme has to be for us. I can almost guarantee you I won't be collecting this theme. I have little to no interest in Angry Birds. But while it's not at the peak of its popularity, the games are still widely played and merchandise is still widely sold, and I can see that popularity even increasing with a feature film in theaters. I'm also interested in seeing what the film and/or sets might do to reflect the kinetic aspect of the gameplay, since many other Angry Birds toys have tried to reflect that, with mixed results.

In the meantime, I've seen a lot of comments comparing this to 2003, when LEGO nearly went bankrupt. I think that's silly. LEGO has a lot of non-licensed themes (and some fairly reliable licensed themes like Star Wars and Super Heroes) to depend on if this one goes kaput.

Plus, it's not as if this is even an indication of more licensed sets next year than this year! After all, does anybody REALLY expect new Jurassic World sets in 2016? I sure don't. I think we can trust LEGO enough to allow them one risky new movie tie-in per year. Even licenses for box office flops like Prince of Persia or The Lone Ranger don't seem to have held LEGO back much in their rise to the top of the toy industry.

Once I saw the trailer im quite excited for the sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

OMG, that pig is terrible.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I can see that the figures might hold interesting uses for custom figures like aliens and such. I haven't quite decided if I like the theme, but new parts always intrigue me...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I thought it was an apple!

Gravatar
By in Serbia,

Love the new egg! I hope there are lots of eggs in sets :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Movie looks horrible, therefore the sets will follow. Similar to TLR.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@followsclosely: Actually, The Lone Ranger sets were pretty good. ( you do mean The Lone Ranger, right?)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Moshi Monsters Movie vanished from my local cinema almost immediately after it was released. Wonder if this will too. There's not even any references in the trailer to the destruction element that made the actual game so popular (no, the black one blowing up in his own house doesn't count), which poses the question of whether that actually plays a part in the Lego sets? I have no problem with Lego releasing a theme like this - new parts/colours, but I think it's been long enough that some of the kids that used to like Angry Birds at its peak may now be interested in other things. However the Lone Ranger sets were a steal at discounts for great sets, so I can only hope for decent set design here.

HaaaaaAAAAAATTTEE

That egg piece looks interesting, though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Cute. Will pass, unless I'm really wowed by the set design.

Gravatar
By in United States,

*Walks away to grab a shotgun* Am I the only one who finds these unsettling..?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@pagani88 I agree, actually I am happy the Lone Ranger movie was not popular because it meant it was pretty cheap to pick up the sets on the aftermarket. The train, stagecoach, and mine sets are all quite nice.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I actually saw the trailer for the movie, enjoyed it, and am looking forward to it. I'll, of course, reserve my judgement on the sets. The figures, in the least, look pretty accurate to their movie depictions.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If I saw the pig figure without any context I'd swear it was a LEGO knockoff brand's product. Same goes for the ghost figure from the one Dimensions pack.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

As an AFOL, I think it'll be interesting how they make these sets. I would imagine that they're going to be designed with a LOT of play features. But as sort of a side note, is angry birds still a thing?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

My own personal opinion of Angry Birds aside, this is still an incredibly bizarre business move by LEGO. The Angry Birds hype train has long since left the station, with the movie coming across as nothing more than a last desperate attempt to wring a few more coins out of its faded popularity.

I suspect the only reason this is happening is because LEGO must have seen notable success with the Minecraft line, and are hoping to make the 'sets based on "popular" games' lighting strike twice.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The figs are some of the ugliest things I've ever seen Lego produce. As for the sets, I have nothing to go on, but like many have already reiterated, the timing of this movie and theme feels oddly late. Especially the concept boggles the mind - what's next, a Bejeweled movie? A Tetris movie? The whole thing is like an old Simpsons joke come to life.

Lego will be fine regardless of this line's success. But, it just feels so... sleazy. Not like the first time Lego took on outside licenses, with Star Wars and Harry Potter, this is so much more cynical. Lego is a toy, but as a building toy it appeals to "smart" play. Branching into movies, books, even comics can all be argued to have some sort of redeeming educational factor, but a viral phone game? This is something I'd expect as a pathetic reach by one of the rip-off brands.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

The trailer is one of the worst I've seen for years. Obvious, unfunny jokes, hideous characters, mismatched voices and Michael Jackson songs that sound totally out of place... this movie is going to be a box office disaster. Lego should have nothing to do with such a monumentally bad film, especially if it means producing such grotesque minifigures.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Yeah, the one thing that staggers me on this whole deal (aside from unbelievably ugly toys, which I'm actually pretty okay with because I don't plan on ever buying any) is that, wasn't the Angry Birds fad over, like, half a decade ago?

It just seems so odd that somebody decided, let's make a movie about this concept! Ten bucks says it'll be in theatres for half an hour before it quietly vanishes. Meanwhile, Angry Birds Lego sets will be sitting on shelves gathering dust for years.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

These figs looks like made by Mega Blocks...
However, molded egg is nice.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The trailer was okay. These figures look like Duplo or Mega Bloks figures

Gravatar
By in United States,

My son has been building Angry Birds and Bad Piggies out of Duplos for the last week. I wish these were Duplo sets, but they'll still blow his mind.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Waste of good Lego.

Gravatar
By in United States,

My interest in this theme relies on one price in a new color, since Minecraft didn't deliver it. I only hope there are Dark Green (LEGO color name Earth Green) 2x2 plates with the single centered stud. Beyond that, not impressed.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Like another person said, a waste of good Lego. I know that young kids will love the whole game based set theme, but just as easy it is to fascinate young kids, they lose interest just as quickly. So my prediction on the whole thing is that it's a licensed version of a big bang theme that'll sell for 1 year then sit gathering dust on the shelves or become sidelined by other Angry Bird toys or whatever.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm sorry, they just don't look right with arms or feet! What I would buy, though, is a UCS Red. That'd be pretty fun to have in my office.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@LEGOstarwars66: I have no idea what you mean "licensed version of a big bang theme" since the DEFINITION of a big-bang theme requires that it be a concept developed in-house. Plus, big bang themes are usually developed to last two to three years. I sort of doubt even LEGO expects to keep this theme going without new movies in theaters.

LEGO knows that many kids have short attention spans. Many of their new themes (like Pharaoh's Quest, Dino, Monster Fighters, The Lone Ranger, Jurassic World, and even the latest iterations of Castle and Pirates) are seemingly developed with that in mind. So why would a lack of long-term staying power make this theme a "waste"?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't despise these, unlike most, but I'm just not interested in 'em.

Gravatar
By in United States,

All that will take to turn some people's perceptions of the upcoming sets are new pieces and new colors.

Not that people will be buying entire sets in flocks, but the Bricklink sellers will be.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Aanchir- What I mean by it being a licensed Big Bang theme is how LEGO knew that it was going to be a short theme, yet decided to capitalize on the whole idea of a Big Bang theme. By a waste, I don't mean that people should hate on this theme, but LEGO didn't have that much reason to create so many new molds in comparison to the overall profitability of the theme. Also, while even after the sets have been discontinued, the secondary value doesn't go up by much. Even for The Lone Ranger, the only new elements were minifigs and accessories which were small and didn't deviate from the original molds by much. In short, I just don't see the reason behind this financial decision on LEGO's part. I'm not against the theme; I just think that LEGO has made a bizarre financial decision to invest so much in a short movie tie in release and make less profit than if they would have using existing molds.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@LEGOstarwars66: The size of the eight or so molds in The Lone Ranger doesn't mean they were any less expensive than these ones. Everybody seems to be acting as if LEGO is investing really heavily in this theme when all we've seen are two teasers that show about seven new molds (five birds, a pig, and an egg).

All in all, I just don't see how this theme is any worse than, say, Jurassic World — a one-wave theme which introduced seven new molds for just ONE dinosaur, and three more for other sets. Chances are LEGO will never be able to use those Indominus Rex and Dilophosaurus molds again — the Indominus Rex was invented for the movie so its unique molds are probably IP-locked, while the Dilophosaurus head mold is inaccurate to the actual dinosaur, and even the guy who designed the mold doesn't like it.
